5 Levels of Pleasure

Fifth class (lowest): physical/sensory pleasure; fourth: love; third: meaning/purpose/goodness; second: creative power; first (highest): an encounter with G-d.

Rabbi Noach (Noah) Weinberg, founder of Aish HaTorah, taught this hierarchy in his classic “Five Levels of Pleasure” class (widely available on Aish and in recordings). The core idea is that all humans seek pleasure, G-d wants us to enjoy it, and there are five qualitatively different classes. There is no exchange rate between them—no amount of a lower class can buy even a small amount of a higher one. Real pleasure always has a price tag of effort (comfort is not the same as pleasure), and each level has counterfeits.

The Five Levels (5th class to 1st class)
Fifth class — Physical / sensory pleasure: Food, clothing, a comfortable home, music, scenery, and anything involving the five senses. Judaism affirms these as gifts from God (e.g., tasting new fruit is something one should not forgo). The counterfeit is mindless overindulgence that leaves you depleted rather than energized; awareness is the key to real enjoyment.

Fourth class — Love: The emotional pleasure of focusing on the virtues of another person (especially family and close relationships). Classic illustration: no parent would sell a child for any amount of money, however large. The counterfeit is infatuation—the idea that love “just happens” with no effort or knowledge (as in the Cupid myth). Real love is built through knowledge, commitment, and focusing on the good.

Third class — Meaning / purpose / goodness (“doing the right thing”): The drive for meaning, to make a difference, and to do what is right. People will give up lower pleasures—and sometimes even life itself—for a cause or principle (e.g., refusing to murder innocents even under threat). Counterfeits include foolish “heroics,” equating financial success or status with being good, and “looking good” instead of actually being good.

Second class — Creative power: The power to create and have positive impact—bringing ideas into reality (as an artist, leader, or parent shaping a family with values). This is not domination. The counterfeit is destructive power (tyrants seeking control). Creativity produces benefit for others and gives a taste of Divine creativity.

First class — Encounter with God: Connection to the Infinite, experiences of awe, and a living relationship with the Divine. Even when the lower levels are mastered, something remains missing until one is in touch with the transcendent. Nothing finite compares to the Infinite. The price is gratitude—recognizing everything as a gift and letting go of the illusion of total self-sufficiency. Counterfeits include treating finite things (career, relationships, etc.) as the ultimate source of fulfillment.

Weinberg often illustrated the progression with an airplane (first class vs. lower classes) or a rocket launch: physical pleasure provides lift-off, love accelerates the journey, meaning puts you in orbit, creative power propels you toward a destination, and living with God is the landing.

The framework draws from the Sefer HaChinuch (mitzvah 418 on loving God), which notes that neither wealth, family, honor, nor dominion compares to love of God; Weinberg developed this into the five distinct levels of pleasure.

### Weinberg’s Five Levels
Rabbi Noach Weinberg taught that human desire seeks pleasure, and there are five distinct classes. There is no exchange rate between them: no amount of a lower class can purchase a higher one. Real pleasure always requires effort; comfort is not pleasure. Each level also has counterfeits.

From lowest (thickest vessel) to highest:

1. **Fifth class — Physical / sensory**
Food, clothing, home, music, scenery — the five senses. Enjoyed with awareness. Counterfeit: mindless overindulgence.

2. **Fourth class — Love**
Focusing on the virtues of another (family, relationships). No parent would sell a child for any amount of money. Counterfeit: effortless infatuation.

3. **Third class — Meaning / purpose / goodness**
The drive to do what is right and make a difference. People will forgo lower pleasures (and sometimes life itself) for a cause. Counterfeit: foolish heroics or equating status/money with being good.

4. **Second class — Creative power**
The power to bring ideas into reality and produce lasting good (not domination). Counterfeit: destructive power and tyranny.

5. **First class — Encounter with God**
Connection to the Infinite. Nothing finite satisfies fully until this is reached. The price is gratitude.

These correspond to the five levels of the soul (Nefesh–Ruach–Neshama–Chaya–Yechida) and to the five levels of *Aviut* (thickness of the desire to receive) in the system of *Talmud Eser Sefirot*.

### Alignment with Baal HaSulam and *Tzimtzum Bet*
In Baal HaSulam’s presentation of the ten *sefirot*, the five measures of *Aviut* in the *Masach* generate five descending levels of light (Keter down to Malchut) and structure the five worlds (Adam Kadmon and ABYA). Greater thickness of desire yields a lower level of light that can be clothed.

*Tzimtzum Bet* (the second restriction) occurs when Malchut rises to Bina (in *Nekudot de SAG*, at the *Chazeh*). This sets the *Parsa*, separating vessels of bestowal (GE) from vessels of reception (AHP). After this restriction:

- The highest two levels remain as *Makifim* (surrounding lights that do not enter the vessels).
- Only the lower three remain usable as inner vessels that can clothe light.

In the pleasure numbering this places the boundary between level 3 and level 4. Levels 1–2 (Encounter with God and Creative Power) stay surrounding. The remaining three can still be received and clothed inside the corrected structure.

### Noach’s Ark as the image
The ark has three stories (Genesis 6:16). These correspond to the three levels that remain accessible after *Tzimtzum Bet* — the inner system that can still hold light.

- **Level 4 = the water**
The flood. In the source Weinberg drew from (*Sefer HaChinuch*, mitzvah 418 on love of God), dominion is listed among the things that do not compare to love of God. Level 4 is therefore dominion in its uncorrected form — the destructive power of the flood. It surrounds the ark but does not enter it. This is the quality of a *Makif*: present and forceful, yet not clothed within.

- **Level 5 = the world, the place, HY**
The outer world itself (the place of the worlds, the external *Heichal* / *Hitzoniut*). It remains fully outside. The ark floats above the waters that cover it.

The three stories are the post-restriction vessel. The two highest lights stay as *Makifim* outside the ark. Level 4 (water/dominion) is the destructive surrounding force, and level 5 is the world that remains external.

### Summary table

| Level | Pleasure (Weinberg) | After *Tzimtzum Bet* | Ark image |
|-------|---------------------|----------------------|-----------|
| 1–2 | Encounter with God / Creative power | Remain *Makifim* | Outside the ark (highest surrounding lights) |
| 3 | Meaning / purpose | Inner — one of the three stories | Inside the ark |
| 4 | Love / dominion | Water — destructive power | The flood surrounding the ark |
| 5 | Physical / world | The world, place, HY | Outer place covered by the waters |

The ascent in pleasure is the purification of *Aviut*. After the second restriction the higher two stay surrounding; the lower three can still be held inside a corrected vessel. The ark is the image of that vessel: it floats on the destructive waters of uncorrected dominion (level 4) and is protected from the outer world (level 5), while the highest lights remain *Makifim*.

This is why there is no exchange rate between the classes, and why the refined desire can survive the flood without being destroyed by the powers that stay surrounding.
