The tzaddik, the more he grows old, adds and renews himself.

"And the life of Sarah was a hundred years, etc., the years of Sarah's life" (23:1): four occurrences of 'year,' corresponding to the four passages in the Tefillin, which are the essential vitality of the years that the person lived. And this is what our Rabbis, of blessed memory, expounded (cited in Rashi): at one hundred she was as at twenty, and at twenty as at seven, namely, as above. For this is the essential perfection: that he should begin to live each time. Even when he reaches the days of old age, he should still be entirely a suckling child in his own eyes, as though he had not begun to live and serve Hashem at all. And he should begin anew each time to live in His service, blessed be He, as above.

And this is the aspect of: at one hundred as at twenty, at twenty as at seven; the years of Sarah's life were all equally good. For the more the tzaddik grows old, he is still a suckling child in his own eyes, as though he were still an infant, etc., as above. And through this he adds to his service each time, and attains truly long life, for all his days and years are truly years of life. For he does not lose any day of the days of his life without an addition of holiness and vitality, as above. (Likutay Halachos, Tefillin, halacha 5, item 38)

Holiness is not free of charge but requires full payment; therefore Avraham wanted only to purchase for full payment.

"For full payment let him give it to me" (23:9). For this reason one must keep oneself especially far from accepting gifts, as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said, and as it is written, 'And one who hates gifts will live.' For it is difficult for holiness to ascend free of charge, but rather through full payment. As it is written in the holy Zohar concerning the acquisition of mitzvos and good deeds, they must be purchased for full payment. For the sitra achra—the other side—is called 'free of charge,' as is known. Therefore, when one receives the object free of charge as a gift, it is very difficult to sift out and elevate the holiness that is there; and then the klipos that surround every level can take hold of it and can destroy its vitality, Heaven forbid. For the klipos are the side of death, and therefore one who hates gifts will live.

And therefore Avraham our father did not wish to take the Cave of Machpailuh as a gift from Ephron, as it is written, 'For full payment let him give it to me.' For, because of the greatness and immensity of the holiness that was there, when it was under Ephron's control the klipos surrounded it greatly; and therefore for Ephron it was darkness and gloom, as is cited. Therefore it was not possible to bring it out from Ephron as a gift free of charge, but only through full payment. For it is impossible to bring out and elevate holiness free of charge, especially such exalted holiness. (Likutay Halachos, Matunuh [Gifts], halacha 4, item 11)

"For full payment let him give it to me" (23:9). This is the aspect of Avraham pressing himself to purchase the Cave of Machpailuh specifically for full payment, as it is said, "But if you would only hear me: I have given the money for the field; take it from me, etc." And likewise Dovid, when he purchased the site of the Bais HaMikdash from Aravnah the Yivoosi, etc., said, "And I will not offer to my God burnt offerings free of charge." And as it is stated in the holy Zohar.

For these places were holy with very awesome holiness: the Cave of Machpailuh, which is the gates of Gan Eden, through which all the souls ascend to the Tree of Life, etc.; and likewise the site of the Bais HaMikdash is the gate of heaven, etc., etc. And their essential holiness is that there Divine providence is revealed to a greater degree, which is the essential holiness of Eretz Yisrael, as it is said, "The eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it." As is explained there in the Torah teaching mentioned above; and certainly also within Eretz Yisrael itself, the greater the holiness, the more and more providence is revealed there. For providence is the essence of the entirety of holiness, whose principal place is in Eretz Yisrael, as above. And there in Eretz Yisrael there are ten degrees of holiness, up to the Holy of Holies, where the principal revelation of providence is. And likewise in the Cave of Machpailuh, which was prepared for the burial of the patriarchs, to ascend through there to be included in Him, blessed be He.

But these places were under the control of the sitra achra, with Ephron and Aravnah the Yivoosi. For so it is: wherever immense holiness is concealed in this physical world, it is initially under the control of the sitra achra, as is cited. And the essence of the sitra achra is the above-mentioned denial associated with nature, as above. Therefore it was not possible to bring the holiness out from them in its entirety except with their knowledge and consent, through full payment and not free of charge. For money encompasses all the influxes, as above. And the principal reason for all their erroneous pursuit of the denial associated with nature, which is an aspect of idolatry, is the desire for money, in which all seventy forms of idolatry are embedded (as is explained elsewhere). Therefore it is impossible to bring out what they have swallowed from their mouths willingly except through money, as with Avraham and Dovid, as above. And there is much, much to explain in this, and those with understanding will understand. (Likutay Halachos, Piryuh viRivyuh [Procreation], halacha 5, item 16)

"For full payment let him give it to me" (23:9). Since the essential fulfillment of the Torah and the mitzvos is through faith, as it is written, 'All Your commandments are faith,' therefore the essential perfection of the mitzvos is when they are purchased for full payment and one spends much money for the mitzvah, as is cited in the holy Zohar, that it must be acquired for full payment. For when the mitzvah is free of charge it has no perfection, and the sitra achra, which is called 'free of charge,' is not subdued; see there.

For the essence of faith depends upon money: when one spends much money for something holy. This is the essential aspect of faith, as Rabbainu, of blessed memory, wrote (teaching 23) concerning the verse 'You commanded righteousness in Your testimonies and faith exceedingly': 'exceedingly' is money, as it is written, 'And with all your might'—with all your money. For the mitzvah is not called faith except through one's spending money for it; see there.

For money is drawn from the aspect of the vacant space, which is the mystery of the contraction, which is the root of all judgments; from there comes all money, which is an aspect of contractions and judgments, as is known, in the aspect of (Iyov 37), 'From the north gold comes.' North is an aspect of contraction and judgment drawn from the vacant space, in the aspect of (Yirmeya 1), 'From the north evil will break forth.' For the vacant space is, as it were, vacant and open, devoid of His Godliness, blessed be He; and therefore from there evil will break forth, for from there comes the hold of the entire sitra achra. And this is the aspect of: one who comes to defile himself is given openings. And our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said (Yoma 38b), he has many openings, the aspect of 'Sin crouches at the opening.' For the root of all the klipos and the sitra achra and the evil inclination is solely from the aspect of the vacant space, which is the mystery of the beginning of the contraction.

For even the klipos that come from the breaking of the vessels, which came into being through an abundance of light, also have their principal root and hold in the beginning of the contraction, which is the aspect of the vacant space. For in truth the essential aspect of the breaking of the vessels came into being only through this, through the denials drawn from the vacant space. For the essential coming into being of the vessels was through the contraction of the vacant space: initially everything was the Infinite, and there was no place for creation; and Hashem, blessed be He, contracted His Godliness to the sides, and a vacant space came into being. And afterward He drew His light into it by way of the straight line. And this light shines in all the attributes and in all the worlds, all of them; and this light is drawn into vessels. And the essential coming into being of the vessels is from the thickening of the light: wherever the light is farther from its root, the aspect of the Infinite, there the light becomes thicker, until the aspect of vessels comes into being. And the essential thickening of the light is because of the contraction of the vacant space. For if there were no vacant space, everything would be the Infinite, and there would be no distancing of the light and its drawing close to the Infinite, as is known.

And the general principle is that the essence of the vessels is the aspect of contractions and thickening of the light drawn through the beginning of the contraction of the vacant space. And because of the abundance of light, the vessels could not bear the light and broke, as all this is explained at the beginning of Aitz Chayim; see there. And it is stated that the breaking was from the abundance of dross that was in the vessels. And the dross is the aspect of judgments drawn from the vacant space, namely, the aspect of denial: namely, because each one said, 'I shall reign,' which is arrogance, which is an aspect of denial. Namely, they do not have complete faith that Hashem, blessed be He, is present even there, even in the vacant space itself; rather, it seems to them as though they were an independent domain, Heaven forbid. This is the aspect of the abundance of dross that was in them, and through this they could not bear the light. For it is impossible to receive the light in its entirety except through faith, as above; and because of the deficiency of faith that was in them, through this they broke. Thus the essential breaking of the vessels is also drawn from the aspect of the denials drawn from the vacant space. And the entire matter of contraction and breaking and repair is found in every person. And one who has a heart to understand can understand a little of this matter in every person.

And the general principle is that the essential thing is faith, as above; and money is drawn from the beginning of the contraction, which is the aspect of the vacant space, as above. Therefore all the vessels, and their breaking and their repair, are called the sifting of silver refined from the waste, as it is written (Mishlay 25), 'Remove dross from silver, and a vessel will come forth for the refiner; remove a wicked man from before a king, etc.' For subduing the wicked and sifting out the holiness from them, which is the aspect of repairing the breaking, is the aspect of 'Remove dross from silver, and a vessel will come forth for the refiner,' the aspect of repairing the vessels, as above. And as is explained (Malachi), 'And I will test them as gold is tested, and refine them as silver is refined; and he will sit refining and purifying silver.' And likewise the entire sitra achra and the klipos are called in the holy Zohar 'dross of gold'; and the repair and sifting of holiness are called refined silver, as is stated, 'The brain is white as silver.' For every vessel of holiness is an aspect of contraction, which is an aspect of silver and gold; all this is drawn from the first contraction, which is the aspect of the vacant space, as above.

Thus money is drawn from the contraction of the aspect of the vacant space, and therefore the essence of faith is through money: when one breaks the desire for money and spends much money for the mitzvah. For there, in the aspect of the vacant space, only faith is needed, because holiness and Godliness are greatly concealed there, as above. And therefore, in the money drawn from there, all the idolatries, which are denials, are embedded; for all the idolatries and denials have their principal root in the aspect of the vacant space, as above.

And therefore Avraham our father did not wish to receive the Cave of Machpailuh from Ephron free of charge; and likewise King Dovid, peace be upon him, did not wish to receive the threshing floor of Aravnah the Yivoosi, which is the site of the Bais HaMikdash, free of charge. For the holiness of the Cave of Machpailuh, and likewise the holiness of the site of the Bais HaMikdash, were initially greatly concealed, in the utmost concealment, in the aspect of holiness concealed in the aspect of the vacant space. And it was not possible to sift them out and reveal them except through the strength of their faith, for Avraham our father was the chief of those who believe. And see Zohar Chadash, parshas Beraishis (folio 11b): Rabbi Yehudah said: What is the meaning of what is written (Shmuel I, 27), 'For this boy I prayed'? It should have said, 'For this son I prayed.' Rather, Channah said: May it be Your will that when he grows up he should endeavor in the service of the Omnipresent as he does now, while he is a boy. And every person who merits to be in his old age as in his youth will merit the stature of Shmuel the prophet. End of quotation.

83. In the holy Zohar, parshas Tiroomuh (folio 128), they said concerning this: A person who wishes to endeavor in a mitzvah, and through it to endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, must not endeavor in it emptily and free of charge. Rather, a person must endeavor in it properly, according to his ability. And we have established this matter in several places: it is fitting for a person to undertake that endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, as you say (Divurim 16:17), 'Each man according to the gift of his hand,' etc. And if you say: But it is written (Yeshaya 55:1), 'Come, purchase and eat; and come, purchase wine and milk without money and without price,' for it is free of charge (and an endeavor without money), and it is an endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He—rather, an endeavor in Torah: whoever wishes merits it. An endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, to know Him: whoever wishes merits it without any payment at all. But an endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, that consists in a deed, it is forbidden to undertake it free of charge and emptily, because through that deed he does not merit at all to draw upon himself a spirit of holiness, except through full payment. In the book of sorcerers that Ashmedai taught King Shlomo: whoever wishes to endeavor to remove an impure spirit from himself and to subdue another spirit, that deed in which he wishes to endeavor must be acquired for full payment, for whatever they ask of him, whether little or much. For the impure spirit is always available free of charge and emptily, and is sold without payment; and it forces people to let it dwell upon them, and entices them, so as to dwell with them, through many enticements; through many ways it leads them astray to establish its dwelling with them. But the spirit of holiness is not so; rather, through full payment, and through very great endeavor, and through purifying oneself and purifying one's dwelling, and through the will of one's heart and soul—and would that he could gain it, so that it would establish its dwelling with him. End of quotation.

And Rabbi Chayim Vital (מהרח״ו), of blessed memory, wrote in Shaar HaMitzvos (parshas Aikev) about the Arizal: When he would purchase some mitzvah, such as Tefillin or an esrog, he was not particular about knowing how much he would give for that mitzvah; rather, he would pay whatever they asked of him the [first] time, and he would say to the seller: Here is the money before you; take whatever you wish, as is written in the Zohar in parshas Tiroomuh. End of quotation.
