The more a person sees that the judgments, which are the aspect of the intensification of the inclination, intensify against him, the more he specifically must strengthen himself to increase and persist in prayer and supplication, more and more, in order to sweeten and annul the severity of the judgments.\n\nAnd therefore the essential hisbodedus, which is the aspect of conversation between oneself and one's Maker, is stated particularly concerning Yitzchak, as it is written, 'And Yitzchak went out to converse in the field.' For the essence of conversation and hisbodedus is to sweeten the aspect of justice and the judgment of Yitzchak. (Likutay Halachos, Matunuh [Gifts], halacha 5, item 43)"

"en": "83. In the holy Zohar, parshas Tiroomuh (folio 128), they said concerning this: A person who wishes to endeavor in a mitzvah, and through it to endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, must not endeavor in it emptily and free of charge. Rather, a person must endeavor in it properly, according to his ability. And we have established this matter in several places: it is fitting for a person to undertake that endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, as you say (Divurim 16:17), 'Each man according to the gift of his hand,' etc. And if you say: But it is written (Yeshaya 55:1), 'Come, purchase and eat; and come, purchase wine and milk without money and without price,' for it is free of charge (and an endeavor without money), and it is an endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He—rather, an endeavor in Torah: whoever wishes merits it. An endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, to know Him: whoever wishes merits it without any payment at all. But an endeavor in the Holy One, blessed be He, that consists in a deed, it is forbidden to undertake it free of charge and emptily, because through that deed he does not merit at all to draw upon himself a spirit of holiness, except through full payment. In the book of sorcerers that Ashmedai taught King Shlomo: whoever wishes to endeavor to remove an impure spirit from himself and to subdue another spirit, that deed in which he wishes to endeavor must be acquired for full payment, for whatever they ask of him, whether little or much. For the impure spirit is always available free of charge and emptily, and is sold without payment; and it forces people to let it dwell upon them, and entices them, so as to dwell with them, through many enticements; through many ways it leads them astray to establish its dwelling with them. But the spirit of holiness is not so; rather, through full payment, and through very great endeavor, and through purifying oneself and purifying one's dwelling, and through the will of one's heart and soul—and would that he could gain it, so that it would establish its dwelling with him. End of quotation.\n\nAnd Rabbi Chayim Vital (מהרח״ו), of blessed memory, wrote in Shaar HaMitzvos (parshas Aikev) about the Arizal: When he would purchase some mitzvah, such as Tefillin or an esrog, he was not particular about knowing how much he would give for that mitzvah; rather, he would pay whatever they asked of him the [first] time, and he would say to the seller: Here is the money before you; take whatever you wish, as is written in the Zohar in parshas Tiroomuh. End of quotation."
