(הלכות מנחה הלכה ז' אות פ"ט) EN: Yaakov instituted the evening prayer—that is, even in the depths of exile and darkness, when it will be impossible to open one's mouth, even then not to despair, but to pray. "And he encountered the place." (28:11) This is the aspect of the evening prayer being optional, for the evening prayer is what our father Yaakov instituted: strengthening oneself in prayer even from within the depth of the darkness, which is the intense bitterness of exile in body and soul, etc., as mentioned above. Through this comes the essential building of the third House, which we hope will be built in the merit of Yaakov, etc., as mentioned above. And therefore the evening prayer is optional. But apparently this is difficult: if so, when this evening prayer is optional, what, then, did our father Yaakov institute? Could it enter one's mind that there is a prohibition against praying at night? But our father Yaakov foresaw and saw the depth of the prolongation of this bitter exile: how the sitra achra—the Other Side—and the evil inclination spread very, very greatly, in general and in particular, which is the aspect of the darkness of night, as mentioned above. And through the might of his power he instituted that even then we should be able to pray and return to Hashem, which is the aspect of the evening prayer, as mentioned above. But he saw that, because of the intense bitterness of the spread of the sitra achra and the klipos—the shells of impurity—over each and every person, it is impossible to institute imposing an obligation upon him to pray then. For then, in the aspect of the intense bitterness of the darkness of night, he is in the aspect of the absence of speech, the aspect of a mute dove, the aspect of 'I was mute; I will not open my mouth,' the aspect of 'I was mute in silence; I kept silent from good, etc.,' which is said about the time of exile. So much so that, were it not for the power of the great tzaddikim, the aspect of Yaakov, everyone would already be utterly despairing of praying and returning then, amid such a spread of evil abysses, etc. And this is what our father Yaakov instituted, for he is the aspect of the collective entirety of the great tzaddikim, since all of them came forth from him: through the might of his power he instituted exceedingly wondrous and awesome ordinances when he spent the night there, in that place. And he descended to the place to which he descended during his sleep, and from there he ascended to the place to which he ascended, until he instituted that even in the darkness of night and actual gloom a person should arouse himself with strong desires to pray and return to Hashem, blessed be He, and should never despair of prayer and crying out. As our master, teacher, and rabbi, of blessed memory, cautioned and said: only let him not despair of crying out and prayer. [Provided one does not despair of crying out: one cries out, one pleads, etc.] And then everything is transformed for the good, etc. And this is the aspect of the optional evening prayer instituted by our father Yaakov. For the holiness of Yaakov, rooted in every person of Israel who comes from his seed, is the aspect of the point of the truth in its very truth, which is the aspect of will, which is the aspect of the light of the face, as explained elsewhere. And as it is written, 'You will give truth to Yaakov,' the aspect of 'Those who seek Your face, Yaakov, selah.' Therefore our father Yaakov, through the might of his power, implanted [this] in the heart of all Israel, down to the end of these last generations, which are the footsteps of Mashiach. That even now, in the bitterness of exile, which is the aspect of the intense darkness of night, each person should look to the truth in its very truth, until each person strengthens himself, from whatever place he is in, with strong desires and good longings for Hashem, blessed be He, in the aspect of 'I remembered Your name, Hashem, at night,' the aspect of 'I will recall my melody in the night; with my heart I will converse, and my spirit will search.' What will be my end and ultimate purpose? The aspect of 'Upon my bed, in the nights, I sought the one whom my soul loves.' That he should strengthen himself even then to search and seek the one whom my soul loves, which is the holiness of his Jewishness. And even though it seems to him that he cannot find it, in the aspect of 'I sought him and did not find him,' nevertheless, 'I will arise now and go around the city, in the markets and in the broad streets,' etc. And this is the essential rectification instituted by our father Yaakov: that even in the intense darkness of night, the aspect of the prolongation of exile, we should seek and search for Hashem, blessed be He, with exceedingly strong desires, until through this he will naturally strengthen himself to open his mouth with words of prayer even then, in the aspect of 'I was mute in silence; I kept silent from good, and my pain was stirred; my heart grew hot within me; in my musing a fire burned; I spoke with my tongue.' And in truth, the aspect of this way is the essential perfection of prayer at all times. And this is the essential counsel for prayer, conversation, and hisbodidus—secluded personal prayer (and as explained elsewhere). For in truth it is impossible to pray and express one's conversation except through good desires and longings, etc. And this is the aspect of: do not make your prayer a fixed routine, etc. Only, nevertheless, it is necessary to institute prayers that will be obligatory for the masses, for without this they will not pray at all. But Yaakov, who lowered himself to the very end, to the footsteps of Mashiach, occupied himself with the essential rectification, which is the aspect of the optional evening prayer: that even in the depth of the darkness he implanted [the strength] not to despair of prayer, but to strengthen oneself with strong desires for Hashem, blessed be He, until one awakens of oneself to pray to Hashem, blessed be He, by one's own permission and will. This is the essential rectification of prayer, as mentioned above. For Yaakov is named for the heel and the end, the aspect of the footsteps of Mashiach, the aspect of 'And his hand was holding Esav's heel': he held Esav's heel, where there are fallen souls and sparks that have fallen very low, down to the heel. This is the aspect of most of the souls of these generations, which are the aspect of the footsteps of Mashiach, as understood from the writings of the Ari, of blessed memory. And in truth they are exceedingly lofty and mighty souls, only they have fallen and descended very low, as explained at length concerning this in Sefer HaGilgulim (Book of Reincarnations). And Yaakov held Esav's heel so as not to allow him to fulfill his evil will, Heaven forbid, to conquer these souls completely—may the Merciful One spare us—but rather to bring them out through his great power and raise them upward, to the head. And he merited to win the battle until he was called 'Israel, for you have contended,' etc., which is the aspect of 'lee roash'—'a head for me'—for he raised them from the heel to the head, in the aspect of descent being the ultimate ascent. But nevertheless the exile grows exceedingly long. For it is impossible to raise them completely except through isarusa dilisata—an awakening from below—as mentioned above. Therefore he labored greatly until he established a complete bed of the children of Israel, so that such awesome tzaddikim would come forth from him in every generation, who are the aspect of the flashing forth of Mashiach. Until they would have the power to instill strengthening in Israel even in the footsteps of Mashiach, in the very depth of their descent: that even from there they should not despair of mercy, and should strengthen themselves with good desires and longings, until they awaken to cry out and pray and beseech before Hashem, blessed be He, always, however things may be. This is the aspect of the optional evening prayer instituted by our father Yaakov. And this is certainly a great rectification, even though it is still optional. For were it not for his rectification, they would already have utterly despaired of prayer then, because of the intense bitterness of the spread of the evil inclination and the klipos, as mentioned above. But now, through his power, he implanted in us [the ability] to pray and beseech even then. (הלכות תפלת המנחה הלכה ז' אות פ"ד) EN: The essential thing is what a person does in serving on his own, but assistance from above is needed. "And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth," etc. (28:12) The essential part of all the rectifications is through an awakening from below, for Hashem, blessed be He, wants specifically us to serve Him from this world. And as our master, teacher, and Rebbe said to several of his followers: If the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to serve Himself by Himself, He would not need you, etc. But it is known that it is very difficult and burdensome for a person to serve Hashem, blessed be He, because the evil inclination grows exceedingly strong and spreads, and particularly against anyone who wants to enter the service of Hashem, blessed be He. As our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said concerning the verse, "For he has done great things": that he stretched out his hand against the great, etc. And therefore there must necessarily be assistance from above. And in truth, everything is from Him, blessed be He, as it is written, "Who has preceded Me, that I should repay?" And nevertheless, some awakening from below is needed, at least. And this is utterly impossible to understand: how everything is from Him, blessed be He, and nevertheless an awakening from below is needed. And this is among the wonders of the One perfect in knowledge, and as is explained concerning this elsewhere. And therefore every single awakening of every person, from whatever place he is, is very precious and important to Hashem, blessed be He. And as is cited extensively in the words of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, in the Gemara and Midrashim: Hashem, blessed be He, asks of Israel, "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a fine needle, and I will open for you," etc. For immediately when a person awakens in prayer and service in truth, however little, an abundant awakening from above is immediately aroused, for one who comes to purify himself is assisted. And through this he has strength to awaken further, and correspondingly a still greater awakening from above is drawn forth, etc. And this is the essential aspect of the unifications effected by all the prayers and services: the uniting of the awakening from below with the awakening from above, etc., as understood in the mystical intentions. Then Yaakov our patriarch apprehended that without an awakening from below, they do not awaken him from Heaven. And Yaakov apprehended this then, when he encountered that place, which is the site of the Holy Temple. And as can be understood by a discerning person from the words of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, who said: And why did they not detain him when he passed there? And they answered: He himself did not set his mind to pray, and should they detain him from Heaven? He went as far as Charan. When he arrived there, he said, etc. He set his mind to return, and the earth contracted for him, and it came to meet him, "And he encountered the place," etc. That is, as long as he had no awakening from below to stay there, they did not wish to detain him from Heaven, until he took it to heart to return there; and immediately an awakening from above was aroused to draw him near, and the place came to meet him. And then he saw the great immensity of the wonders of the matter of awakening from below, through which an awakening from above is effected, and its principal locus is in this place, where all the unifications are, as is known. And then, through his immense apprehension, he apprehended that even every single awakening from the deepest depths of the places of those who have fallen and are very far away This too is very precious. And therefore he then instituted the evening prayer, which is an aspect of this rectification. And this is: "And he encountered the place and lodged there, for the sun had set." For when he encountered the place that came to meet him, the site of the Holy Temple—which is the third building that will endure—he then apprehended the immense bitterness of the prolonged exile that would precede it. This is the aspect of "and he lodged there, for the sun had set," which alludes to the darkness of the bitterness of exile in body and soul, as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, expounded, and as is cited in his words, of blessed memory. And therefore he then instituted the evening prayer, through understanding then the immense preciousness and importance of an awakening from below, even from the deepest depths of pitch darkness, etc., as mentioned above. And then, "And he took some of the stones of the place and put them at his head": the aspect of the fallen sparks and souls, which are the aspect of "The holy stones are poured out at the head of every street." "And he put them at his head": he elevated them and bound them in his holy thought, for all is clarified through thought. And then, "And he lay down in that place": he lowered himself to all the low places mentioned above, to clarify and elevate the souls from there. And then, "And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth, and its head reached heavenward." For a person must go out from level to level, as on a ladder. And all is for the rectification of the worlds, specifically through awakening from below. "And behold, angels of Elokim were ascending and descending upon it." "Angels of Elokim ascending": the aspect of awakening from below. "Angels of Elokim descending": the aspect of awakening from above, which descends from above to assist, through the awakening from below having first ascended from below to above. For through every single holy awakening from below, angels are created; this is the aspect of angels of Elokim ascending from below to above. And through an awakening from below, an awakening above is aroused; and then assistance is drawn forth from above, which is the angels of Elokim descending from above to below to assist him. And this is the aspect of "And behold, angels of Elokim were ascending and descending upon it." And through the inclusion of the awakening from below with the awakening from above, through this all the unifications and rectifications are effected, as is known. And then, "And Yaakov awoke from his sleep and said, Indeed, Hashem is in this place, and I did not know." For even from Yaakov, in his immense holiness, it was hidden; and at first he did not know the immense holiness of that place, until he awakened on his own to return here, as mentioned above. And then the place came to meet him, and he lodged there; and then he apprehended the immense holiness of this place, on which the rectification of all the fallen souls and all the worlds depends. And through this he effected a rectification, instilling in the hearts of all the souls throughout the generations until this day that even the souls who have fallen very far, who think that Hashem, blessed be He, is not to be found in their place, should know and believe that even in their place Hashem, blessed be He, is present, for the whole earth is filled with His glory; it is only hidden from them. And [they should know and believe] that their awakening too is very precious, and that they can find Hashem, blessed be He, in every place in the world, for in truth Hashem is in this place; it is only that one does not know, because of the great concealment—the aspect of "And I did not know." But if he awakens in the aspect of awakening from below, he will merit to find Him, as mentioned above. And then, "And he feared and said, How awesome is this place": he apprehended the immense awesomeness of this place, where the roots of all the souls are, and from there the awakening to repentance is drawn forth for all Israel. But nevertheless an awakening from below is needed, as mentioned above. And then he said, "This is none other than the house of Elokim," which alludes to the third Temple, which will be built in his merit; only this is called a house, not like Avraham, who called it a mountain, etc., as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said. But he used the expression "This is not," which alludes to the destruction of the two Temples, the first and the second, as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said. [This is] to make known that certainly the essential rectification is through the aspect of the third Temple, but "This is not" yet, for we have not yet attained its rectification—"other than the house of Elokim"—for many rectifications are still needed until we merit the aspect of the house of Elokim. And through this he alluded that first many synagogues and study halls are needed, which are a little sanctuary, where all the awakening from below is gathered, etc., as mentioned above. Through this many will merit repentance, as mentioned above, until this house of Elokim is built; and then everyone will return to Hashem, and everything will be rectified, speedily in our days, Amen. (הלכות שילוח הקן הלכה ה') EN: They informed Yaakov in the dream that a person must go through ascents and descents, and he should not think during an ascent that it will always remain so. "And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth," etc. (28:12) One must know that sometimes, when Hashem, blessed be He, helps him so that some illumination flashes for him and he sees some drawing-near—even though in truth it is a genuine drawing-near from Him, blessed be He, and a great and wondrous kindness, in which Hashem, blessed be He, wondrously bestows His kindness upon him—nevertheless he must not mistakenly think that he is already close and near to Hashem, blessed be He, and to the Torah and to the righteous people. For he must know all the above: that however much closer he is, he is still very, very far away, for His greatness is unfathomable; and it is impossible to explain this well, as is explained in the teaching mentioned above. But nevertheless he must know that the deliverance and kindness of every single drawing-near, however little, is a wondrous kindness, for it is a genuine drawing-near, and His deliverance is forever. Yet nevertheless the ultimate fulfillment of his deliverance is still very far from him, and he must still stand and greatly await His deliverance, blessed be He, until he merits to be delivered completely, to leave what he needs to leave and draw near to what he needs to draw near. And this is the aspect of "And he encountered the place and lodged there, for the sun had set." For concerning Avraham it is written, "And he saw the place from afar," whereas concerning Yaakov it is written, "And he encountered the place." For he attained more, for he merited actually to encounter the place (and as cited in the holy Zohar). But nevertheless he knew that the place is still very far away until the time of the end. And therefore, "And he lodged there," which alludes to the troubles of the darkness of exile, as is cited. "For the sun had set": it set before its appointed time. And this is the aspect of what each person undergoes: sometimes, in Hashem's compassion a great light is opened for him, and it seems to him that he will certainly be a properly worthy person; and afterward it suddenly becomes dark for him, as if the sun had actually set suddenly, before its appointed time. And then they informed Yaakov in the dream that all this is the aspect of "And behold, a ladder was set upon the earth, and its head reached heavenward": this is all of a person's service, that he must go from level to level, as when ascending a ladder. "And behold, angels of Elokim"—who are the righteous people—"were ascending and descending upon it": they must undergo several ascents and descents, for before the ascent there must be a descent, and the descent is for the ultimate purpose of the ascent. Therefore a person should not be dismayed, nor should he lose heart over everything he undergoes; therefore he should not err, whether in an ascent or in a descent. That is, when he is in the aspect of some ascent, seeing some deliverance and illumination, he should not mistakenly think that the light is already his; rather, he should know that he is still very far away, as above. And through this he will not fall when he afterward sees that the light has become dark for him, which is the aspect of a descent. For in truth, nevertheless, the light that shone for him has not been extinguished and has not departed from him, for the light of His kindness, blessed be He, shines upon him constantly. It is only that everything is in the aspect of "From afar she brings her bread", and in the aspect of "And he saw the place from afar." But ultimately Hashem, blessed be He, will complete what He began and will do good to the collective of Israel and to each and every individual in particular. Only one must always await deliverance, in the aspect of "And every eye shall await You," and as we say, "For Your deliverance we have hoped all day, and await deliverance." matter of ascents and descents “And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth,” etc. (28:12) And Yaakov went out from Beer Sheva “He went toward Charan”—that is, when a Jewish person goes from level to level, the klipos, which are the imaginings, etc., then flatten themselves and spread out against him. They are an aspect of burning anger, for they come from the force of judgment, as is known. And this is “And Yaakov went out”: he is the Jewish person. “From Beer Sheva” means from the holy level at which he had been, which is called Beer Sheva, for each and every holy level includes all seven attributes, which are the seven days of construction included in every level. And when Yaakov, who is the Jewish person, goes out from there in order to come to a second, higher level, then “he went toward Charan”: he must pass through the burning anger, which is the klipos—all the imaginings, desires, and confusions that spread out against him each time. But because the Jewish person, the aspect of Yaakov, is firm in his resolve, does not leave his place, and does not become discouraged on account of this, but only strengthens himself in every possible way to stand his ground, through this “he encountered the Place.” Through this he merited to understand the truth: that the fact that the desires, etc., spread out against him so greatly is not a fall, God forbid, but only occurs because he needs to come to a higher level and draw closer to God, blessed be He, with a greater closeness. For this reason they spread out against him so greatly. 90 And this is “He encountered the Place”: amid the force of the burning anger, which is the klipos that spread out against him, he merited to encounter there the Place of the world. For the more one ascends to a higher level, the closer one draws to God, blessed be He, who is the Place of the world, in whom all the places and all the levels in the world are included. For He, blessed be He, is the Place of the world, and the world is not His place. That is, Yaakov, the aspect of the Jewish person, through his great strengthening, merited to understand the truth: this is not a fall and a distancing, God forbid; rather, precisely there he encountered the Place of the world. He understood that precisely there he needs to come to a higher level to draw closer to God, blessed be He, and therefore they spread out against him so greatly. And then, “And he lodged there, for the sun had set”: that is, he accepted upon himself and endured the pain of the darkness, which is the aspect of night. And he lodged there in his pain, which he experienced from the pursuit of the desires and imaginings—the aspect of burning anger, the aspect of the klipos that spread out against him because he needed to ascend to a second level. And this is “for the sun had set”: it is the intellect and the mochin that had departed from him. For at the time of their intensification and spreading, the intellect is not complete, because the imaginative faculty, from where all the desires come, opposes the intellect. And this is “for the sun had set” before its appointed time, as our Sages of blessed memory expounded. That is, certainly the setting of the sun—the departure of the mochin that he experienced then—was before its appointed time, not at its proper time. It was not warranted that his intellect depart from him and that they spread out against him so greatly, for it was not because of his fall, God forbid, but only because he needed to ascend to a second level. “And he lay down in that place”: because the Jewish person stood his ground and did not allow himself to fall through the force of the spreading that spread out against him, and merited to draw forth the revelation of the colors until he subdued and broke them, through this he merited to ascend to the intellect at the higher level. And then, “And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set upon the earth, and its top reached heaven.” That is, then they showed him that all a person's service in this world is in this aspect—the aspect of a ladder set upon the earth with its top reaching heaven. That is, each time he needs to ascend from level to level, as one climbs a ladder. And because of this, they grow strong and flatten themselves, and spread out against him so greatly each time. And this is “And behold, angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” The angels of God are those who serve God, who are likened to angels; they ascend and descend on it, on this ladder, for all their ascent and descent is in the aspect of this ladder. For whoever is discerning and believes the tzaddik’s words that this is not a fall at all, and strengthens himself and overcomes as above, ascends through this to a higher level. And conversely, whoever does not strengthen himself descends through this, God forbid. 91 And this is “And behold, God stood over him and said,” etc.: He promised him several promises. For because Yaakov, who is the worthy Jewish person, withstood the trial and did not leave his place until he ascended to a second level, as above, therefore God, blessed be He, promised him that He would be with him, etc., “And I will guard you wherever you go,” etc. He promised him that, although he would undergo still more such things, God, blessed be He, would nevertheless guard him at every time, wherever he goes, until He brings him to his highest level in completeness. This is the aspect of “For I will not leave you until I have done that which I spoke to you”—for you: that is, what He spoke with the true tzaddikim concerning all the holy levels that He would enable us to attain through His abundant compassion. And this is “And Yaakov awoke from his sleep and said: Indeed, God is in this place, and I did not know.” That is, when he awoke from his sleep and from the distress he had experienced when they spread out against him so greatly, he then said, “Indeed, God is in this place, and I did not know.” For it seemed to me as though God, blessed be He, was not there, because the imaginings sought to confuse me, as though God, blessed be He, was not there, and sought to cast me down, God forbid. And how great are God’s kindnesses, which have helped me thus far to stand my ground, until it became known to me that in truth God is in this place. For in truth it was not a fall at all; rather, they spread out against me because I needed to ascend to a higher level and draw closer to God, blessed be He, with a greater closeness, as above. 92 (Halachos of Gifts, Halacha 4, item 12) Segment 5 HE: פח. במסכת ברכות דף כ"ו ע"ב אמרו בזה שתיקן אז יעקב אבינו תפילת ערבית. (That is, [Rabbainu's] will is that we ourselves exert ourselves through his strength and his holy counsels to attain the service of Hashem, but not that he give everything entirely.) And I also heard in several expressions that he said, I can give a person fear to the point that he departs from his life and is nullified in existence. And once, one of our fellowship begged him greatly concerning this, that he give him fear. (And it seems to me, the writer, that this was Rabbi Shimon, his attendant (from a manuscript).) And Rabbainu, of blessed memory, spoke with him in terms such as those above: that he certainly could give [him] tremendous fear, but that this is not the ultimate purpose, for if so he would be nullified in existence. And that man nevertheless longed for tremendous fear to shine upon him. And afterward the man went out from before him, and tremendous, exceedingly extraordinary fear fell upon him. And he began to cry out to Hashem, blessed be He, in strange cries such as he had never been accustomed to, until he almost departed from his vitality. And this continued until the following day. And on the following day he entered his presence, and Rabbainu, of blessed memory, asked him whether fear had reached him. That man answered him, I no longer want this, and begged him to take this away from him. And he again took it away from him, and he returned to his former state. And he also said to one: If I were to pass my hand over your eyes, you would see great and wondrous things, but I do not want this; rather, you yourself should exert yourself in the service of Hashem until you attain what you attain. And he also once said to me concerning this: If Hashem, blessed be He, Himself wanted Himself to serve Himself, then He would not need you. (That is, the righteous person can draw forth the will of Hashem, blessed be He, that He awaken him in His service—even though he does what he does and deserves to be distanced, nevertheless the righteous person can arouse Hashem's mercy upon him, that He draw him near to His service; but not that Hashem do everything Himself.) End of quotation. And in Likutay Halachos (Dvurim HaNoahagim BaS'ooduh [Practices at a Meal], Halacha 4, item 14): And certainly the righteous person has the power to take away a person's free choice and bring him back in repentance, but this is not a rectification, since he does not repent by his own choice. End of quotation. And see the book Ben L'Ashray, by the holy Rabbi Yitzchak HaKoahain, of blessed righteous memory (at the end of Part 3, in the booklet "מקבילות הלולאות" [Parallel Loops], item 1), who wrote in the name of the holy Oar HaChayim: "Moshe Rabbainu, peace be upon him, who was Yehoshua's personal teacher, was a general teacher for the collective of Israel. And therefore Moshe Rabbainu, peace be upon him, had the power to take away Yehoshua's free choice, so that he would not participate in the counsel of the spies." End of quotation. Therefore, each time they must overcome anew, returning to subdue and break the klipos and obstacles at each and every level anew. But in truth this is not a fall at all. End of quotation. EN: 91. The Bair Mayim Chayim, in the portion Lech Lechuh (“And Avram went up from Egypt”), wrote: When the tzaddik sometimes falls from his level, this descent is for the sake of ascent; and after this he ascends higher and higher, beyond where he had been before. And it is like someone who wishes to throw an object upward: he first lowers himself and lowers his hand downward, in order afterward to throw the object upward with great force. And likewise, when a perfected person sometimes comes to the aspect of the back and falls from his level, through this he comes to the aspect of the primordial front, to ascend higher and higher. And something like this is said in the name of the Baal Shem Tov, may his merit protect us and all Israel, concerning what the Sages of blessed memory said (Bava Metzia 59a), “Honor your wives so that you may become wealthy.” That is, let forgetfulness and falling somewhat from your level be precious and important in your eyes, “so that you may become wealthy”—through this, to come to a wondrous level. End of quotation. And the Degel Machanay Efrayim (at the beginning of this portion here) wrote: Here is the mystery of expanded and constricted states, as is known in the name of my revered grandfather, whose soul is in Eden, may his memory be blessed for the life of the World to Come: “For the living beings run and return.” And one cannot remain at a single level always, but rather ascends and descends. And the descent is for the sake of ascent, when one takes it to heart, knows and feels that one is in a constricted state, and prays to God. End of quotation. And in Noatzair Chesed (chapter 4, item 22) he wrote: For example, it is like a king’s son who associated with prostitutes and villagers and played and danced with them in dances and round dances. And the king sent distinguished ministers to him, and he made a mockery and laughingstock of them, for he told them that this was the ultimate good, until one minister changed himself as though he were a villager and played and danced with him. And little by little, through their association, he drew his heart toward his father the king, until he succeeded in returning him to his father. End of quotation. And likewise the Leshem Shevo ViAchlamuh wrote (Sefer HaDe’uh, first part, folio 41b): It follows that every descent that the higher one descends is only for the sake of repair, and so that through it the lower one will also emerge and come into being. And this is also the mystery of all the descents and constricted states that every person undergoes at every time (and this also occurs, in concealment, in all existing things), for behold, it is in order to descend and draw near to that which is below him, and in order to raise it. For through this the holy sparks are raised out of their being swallowed up, to bring forth the precious from the vile. End of quotation. Segment 9 HE: צב. EN: 92. And see there what Rabbi Noson of blessed memory continues afterward, explaining the continuation of the verses at length. And in the book ‘בצאת השמ״ש’ (Bitzais HaShemesh, “When the Sun Goes Forth,” on the introduction to Rechoavoas HaNuhar by the Rashash of blessed memory), in the discussion of the departure of the mochin, where the Rashash explains that in truth there is never a departure of mochin, but rather, in comparison with the coming, higher mochin, it is considered a departure of mochin—[the writer] wrote concerning this in the book Bitzais HaShemesh: And through this the depth of the mystery of ‘descent for the sake of ascent’ and ‘descent is the ultimate ascent’ will be understood. Our masters, the disciples of our master the holy Baal Shem Tov, may his merit protect us, discussed this at length in their books; and likewise, in the holy book Likutay Moharan in several places (part 1, section 22, item 10 and onward; part 2, section 12). And after him, his faithful disciple, the holy gaon Rabbi Noson, expanded on this in the books of Likutay Halachos in countless places. And likewise, something similar also appears in the additions of מהרצ״א to the book Soor MaiRu VaAsay Toav, item 105 (בהנמ״ח, Emes publishing, page 87), and many more instances in all the books of true tzaddikim. And the mystery of this matter is expounded in several illuminating ways. And one of them follows what was explained in the words of our master, the Toaras Chacham: that the departure of the mochin is not literal, but only relative to the superior mochin prepared to come. For the same applies to the matter of descent: the descent is not literal, but only relative to the ascent that follows it. And on the contrary, it itself is the gateway and entrance to the imminent ascent that follows it. But because at this time the person is a vehicle for the new level to which he is destined to ascend, he experiences it as a fall and descent: both because, relative to the superior mochin destined to be drawn into him when he strengthens himself to do His will, blessed be His name, despite the obstacles, he must necessarily feel within his soul a sense of the departure of the mochin, since the old mochin are accounted as nothing in comparison with the excellence and holiness of the new mochin that are approaching; and also because, once he has ceased being a vehicle for the old level whose repair has already been completed—for he has already risen from it and ascended to the new level, and this level still lacks mochin—he therefore experiences the matter within his soul as a descent. For at present he is deprived of the mochin that come level after level: first the mochin of constriction, and afterward the mochin of expansion. And all this is explained at length in the holy book Likutay Moharan (part 1, section 25, item 2 and onward): ‘In each and every world and at each and every level, these imaginings are there; they are the klipos that precede the fruit and surround holiness. And when a person moves from level to level, he must pass through these imaginings in order to reach holiness. And immediately when he ascends to the level, the klipos at that level awaken and surround him. And he must subdue them and break them, and purify that place, etc. And although the klipah at a higher level has already been broken, etc., nevertheless, when the inward aspect of the higher one moves away from there and the outward aspect of the lower one ascends, then the klipah awakens again, etc.; and for this reason he must break it anew.’ And see there in the continuation, where he proceeds to explain on this basis the intention of subduing the klipos during Hoadoo (שעה״ק, folio 17a); see there, and in the words of our master the Toaras Chacham, folio 155b, and in Rabbi Me’il Eliyuh’s glosses there, line 27 (Me’il Eliyuh, page 371). And in Likutay Moharan there, at the end of the section, he concludes this by saying that he then spoke in these words: And in this the chassidim err greatly: suddenly it seems to them that they have fallen from the service of God. But in truth this is not a fall at all; rather, it is because they need to ascend from level to level. And then the klipos—the desires, confusions, and imaginings, etc.—awaken and grow strong anew. Therefore, each time they must overcome anew, returning to subdue and break the klipos and obstacles, etc., at each and every level anew. But in truth this is not a fall at all.” And something like this he wrote there later, in section 72: “Sometimes a thought of repentance comes to a person, and at that hour he becomes a worthy person. And afterward he wants to take action. Since his heart has been stirred to repentance, he therefore wants to travel to the tzaddik. And afterward, when he travels, the evil inclination grows strong against him, and he falls from the yearning he had at first. And afterward, when he comes to the tzaddik, the evil inclination grows stronger against him still, and he loses all his desire. Do not find this difficult, etc., for know that at first, when the thought of repentance came to him, because of the good that had awakened within him, then through his actions at that hour he put his inclination to death, and the evil inclination he had was nullified, etc. And afterward, when he wants to travel, another evil inclination grows strong against him, for one who is greater than his fellow, etc. And he now has an evil inclination greater than he had at first, etc., for he needs especially renewed strength against this new evil inclination that has come to him.” See there at length. And so it is there later in part 2, section 117, and there before it in section 48. And that is, it is like what was explained: the descent is considered a descent only relative to the ascent that follows it, not relative to the ascent that preceded it. And like the parable brought by our holy master: certainly, when a person travels to the tzaddik—and all the more after he comes before him—he has ascended more than tenfold from the level at which he stood at first, before it entered his will to do this. And what he feels at that time within his soul—the coldness of the soul and the strengthening of the inclination—is only relative to the new level to which he has ascended. For since he has already departed, that is, risen from the old level at which he stood, therefore a new and much greater evil inclination has awakened within him, while the actual light of the tzaddik does not yet shine within him fully. And therefore, at this time he must fight and overcome, to be master over his inclination. And then he will feel the holiness of the mochin and the greatness of the level to which he has ascended. End of quotation. The Tiferes Shlomo, of blessed memory, wrote here: And this is what Rochel intimated in these words, ‘God has gathered away my reproach,’ for she saw through holy inspiration that this son being born would raise up the rectification of the 288 holy sparks alluded to in the word ‘my reproach’ (חרפת״י). And this is what Rashi said: she was distressed lest she fall to Aisav’s lot. That is, so that, God forbid, all the flows of bounty would not fall to the external forces through the holy sparks scattered within them and swallowed up among them, which are Aisav’s lot, as above. And understand this. End of quotation. And further there: ‘God has gathered away my reproach, and she called his name Yosef, saying: May the Lord add another son for me.’ Rashi explained, and an aggadic teaching: as long as a woman has no son, one who has a son attributes it to him—‘Who broke this vessel? Your son. Who ate these figs? Your son.’ What appears to be alluded to here is that, behold, the entire essence of the service is to raise the 288 holy sparks that fell from the broken vessels then, and to rectify Adam the first man’s blemish from the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. And this is accomplished through the aspect of the foundation, the righteous one—this is Yosef. And this is what is said: ‘God has gathered away my reproach’—it is the gathering of the 288 sparks alluded to in the word חרפת״י, through the aspect of the foundation, Yosef, as it is written: ‘Yosef amassed grain (ב״ר)’—these are the 202 sparks that Yosef raised. And this is Rashi’s explanation, ‘Who broke this vessel? Your son’: an allusion to the aspect of the breaking of the vessels; and ‘Who ate these figs? Your son’ accords with the opinion that the tree from which Adam ate was a fig tree. And [this] was rectified through Yosef. And this is what is said: ‘May the Lord add another son for me’—it is to raise the holy sparks, the limbs of the Divine Presence, which is alluded to in the Name B״N, kingship: to raise the Name B״N from the external forces, other gods, and to add to holiness. And this is ‘May the Lord add’: [may He add] the Name B״N from the aspect of ‘others’ to the return of holiness, speedily in our days, amen. End of quotation. EN: 96. The Leshem Shevo ViAchlamuh wrote (Biurim, Shaar Akoodim, chapter 1, item 6): It is written, ‘And I saw in a dream, and behold the he-goats mounting the flock were ringed, speckled, and mottled,’ etc. This accords with what is explained in the holy Zohar, Vayaitzay: in all the deeds that Yaakov our father, peace be upon him, performed with the rods and the troughs [and with the] strongly bound sheep, his entire intent was directed toward the supernal rectifications present in all these matters, corresponding to what they signify above. For because he was in Lavan’s house, which is among alien levels and in the domain of a foreign god, he was always employing wisdom and stratagems in deeds below, and directing his intent through them toward the roots of the things to which they allude above, and in order to separate one level from another, impurity from purity and the holy from the ordinary, and to cleave himself to holiness. And this is as explained in the holy Zohar, the portion Vayaitzay, from folio 161 to folio 163. For this is the most exalted service and a rectification beyond which there is nothing higher: when a person stands in the depths of the sea and amid the external forces, like Yaakov in Lavan’s house, to strive constantly to break there the very force and power of the culpable S״M, crush his head, and subdue him, etc. And one cannot endure this and emerge in peace except by performing all one’s deeds for the sake of Heaven, being pure and clean of any ulterior inclination or self-directed desire, and scrutinizing with exceptional care that one is not deceiving oneself. And the main thing is when his capacity is sufficient to direct intent and intimate, in all his actions and affairs, the rectification of the roots of the things corresponding to them above. And therefore, after Yaakov our father, peace be upon him, had perfected himself in all this—after he had remained in Lavan’s house for twenty years, conducted himself in all the aforementioned ways, separated light from within darkness, repelled them all, and emerged pure and clean, entirely holy to the Lord—the whole vision appeared to him in a dream. And as it is written: ‘And I saw in a dream, and behold the he-goats mounting,’ etc. For the Holy One, blessed is He, showed him that in all his actions he had directed his intent toward the goal, and he stood cleaving inwardly to holiness, so that the entire world was created only for him. And not only this: in all the actions and allusions that he made, he actually directed them all precisely also toward the root of roots within the Holy of Holies, reaching to the world of Akoodim, which is the beginning of revelation and the root of Atzeeloos. And therefore he merited becoming a vehicle for the entirety of Atzeeloos, for the world of Atzeeloos is in the aspect of Yaakov relative to A״K, and the world of Akoodim is its root. And Akoodim was made for Atzeeloos, which is Yaakov; and thus Akoodim is a root for Yaakov our father, peace be upon him, who is a vehicle for Atzeeloos. And therefore the mystery of the supernal whiteness of A״K, which is the root of Akoodim, was revealed to him in this vision, as will be explained below. For everything is for Atzeeloos, which is Yaakov’s attribute, and everything was made for him. And this is what is said: ‘For I have seen everything that Lavan does to you.’ This means that Lavan too, which is the mystery of the supernal whiteness, the root of Akoodim, is also made only for you. And this is why it says ‘does to you,’ for it is destined and prepared for you; for there—that is, in the supernal whiteness—there is the mystery of the covenant of the patriarchs, as we explained elsewhere. End of quotation. Segment 14 HE: צז. EN: 97. In Chayay Moharan (section 243): Concerning worldly matters and even foolish matters: the great tzaddikim can elevate those words and make a great act of service out of their stories about ordinary affairs, as can be understood somewhat from the ways and practices recounted about the Baal Shem Tov, of blessed memory, and other awesome tzaddikim in the recent generations. And in the holy Zohar, too, there is some allusion to this matter, as is brought there concerning Rav Hamnuna the Elder, who would arrange three chapters of foolish matters. But the surpassing greatness of the wisdom, the intensity of the holiness, and the attainment that our master, of blessed memory, possessed in this matter—in telling stories in ordinary conversations, etc.—was extraordinarily exalted and lofty. End of quotation. The Degel Machanay Efrayim, of blessed memory, wrote in the portion Beraishis (‘This is the book of the generations of man’): Even when he speaks ordinary conversation, these are ordinary things performed in holy purity; that is, during his conversation he cleaves to wisdom, which is called holy. Through this he recounts, illuminates, and makes brilliant the generations of man—that is, whatever he sometimes blemished through ordinary conversation, he rectifies it all and raises them, whether when he speaks words with wisdom and raises through words, as is known in the name of my grandfather, whose soul is in Eden. End of quotation. And there, in the portion Kee Sissuh (‘Betzalel knew’): When there are tzaddikim in the world, then through their speaking the letters, whether in Torah and prayer with fear and love, or in material matters, or in telling stories—as is known from my grandfather, may his memory be for the life of the World to Come, that there are people who must be elevated through stories. End of quotation. And there, at the beginning of the portion Metzoaruh: There are people whom the tzaddik elevates through his Torah and prayer, and there are people whom he cannot elevate except through his conversation. Although they appear to be idle words, in truth the tzaddik elevates him through the words he speaks with him. And so I heard from my grandfather, may his memory be for the life of the World to Come; and not every person merits this, as my grandfather said concerning the Mishnah, ‘They saw her speaking with someone.’ End of quotation. And in Noam Elimelech, the portion Matos (‘When a man makes a vow’): People imagine that he is in this corner, this world, while he was in another corner, in supernal worlds. For such is the tzaddik’s way: even though he speaks with people, nevertheless his soul is bound above in the worlds. End of quotation. And there, the portion Ri’ay (‘Guard yourself’): The complete and holy tzaddik, whose thoughts are all pure and clear with complete brilliance, always proceeds in cleaving and holiness. And even when he speaks with people, he appears to speak material things, but in truth all his thoughts are directed to the Creator, blessed is He, also in these words; and he performs unifications when he interrupts his learning. End of quotation. And in B’air Moshe (of Kozhnitz), the portion Vayikruh: I heard from my honored father and teacher, who told me about the holy rabbi, the sacred lamp, our teacher Rabbi Levi Yitzchok, of righteous and blessed memory, head of the rabbinical court of Berditchev, who was clothed in a tallis and crowned with Tefillin, and conversed with everyone about this world’s affairs and earthly matters—things that it would not be fitting for an unlearned person or one of the ordinary people to do as he did. And certainly not everyone who wishes, etc.; certainly he was at this level of elevating all the words of ordinary people to the supernal root. End of quotation. In Ateres Tzvi of Ziditchov (on the holy Zohar, the portion Emoar, folio 90), he wrote: It is the way of tzaddikim who speak with the common people, while their thought is in supernal wisdom, to bring about some unification or some parable for the service of the blessed Lord. End of quotation. In B’air Mayim Chayim, the portion Shimos (‘And he said to his people’): We have already elaborated on this aspect elsewhere, and here have presented only chapter headings to make known that there are people at this level, who understand concerning all things in the world the place of their origin in the supernal chariot. And through this they bring about unifications in all lower things. And when they speak about all the matters that seem to people to be stories and things that are wholly unnecessary and appear to be idle matters, he is then bound in his thought ever higher and higher, and the speech issuing from his mouth is nothing but unifications and combinations of the holy Names. And through this they bring great pleasure and satisfaction to their Creator, something that most of the world does not understand at all. And indeed we have found such things many, many times in the words of our early Rabbis, of blessed memory, in the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds and the Midrashim of our Sages—for example, in tractate Shabbos (77b), where Rabbi Zaira found Rav Yehudah in a cheerful frame of mind, etc., and asked him why goats go first and sheep afterward, etc., why a camel’s tail is small, etc., and many such things there, etc. For we, of little understanding, certainly cannot understand things standing at the height of the world, given, given in the deepest secrets of our blessed God’s decree. Only: blessed is He who apportioned of His wisdom to flesh and blood, and gave a little of the little, one out of a thousand thousands of thousands, etc., beyond measure and comparison, some wisdom to those who fear Him to understand the mysteries of His treasures. And through this they too act according to the capacity of their understanding and their love and fear before the Lord: to speak about the lower and intimate the higher, bringing about awesome and exalted unifications in all lower things and in one person’s speech to another, which appear to be wholly idle words. And the general principle of this matter is to know well that the Lord is the One who lowers Himself to see in the heavens and the earth; and upon each and every letter of the words of the least of the least there rests His blessed light, His power, His bounty, and His providence. And therefore within every small thing are the mysteries of our blessed God and the unifications of His Names. End of quotation. And somewhat more extensively on this matter, the holy rabbi of Komarna, of blessed memory, in Zohar Chai on the holy Zohar, the portion Vayichee (on Zohar folio 227): I saw my holy teachers exercising great care in guarding their mouths and tongues, so that all their speech was in unifications, Names, moral instruction, and the ways of unification. Although they told stories and discussed bodily needs, everything was with wondrous intellectual perceptions concerning the state of the Divine Presence in the exiles and matters of unifications. And I would almost recoil in awe from the greatness of the light and wisdom in their words, etc. And I saw my teacher, my holy uncle, when he told some matter concerning this world, or spoke with people needing various things of this world, speaking wondrous things and lofty intellectual perceptions, exalted mysteries. And thus I saw my holy teacher, Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Mezhibuzh: once I stood before him while he spoke with a widow, and I understood his words—that he spoke with her with profound wisdom concerning the exile of the Divine Presence, ‘She became like a widow’—until I began to weep, and he too wept. And his way was to tell stories and converse, and everything was with profound wisdom, etc. And thus I saw my teacher and master, our holy master Rabbi Naftuli (of Ropshitz), whose every word contained unifications and wondrous intellectual perceptions, until I trembled over them. Once I stood behind him and he did not see me. He was sitting on the eve of holy Shabbos when he wished to go to the mikveh, to the bathhouse, and was speaking with his wife in stories. And I understood that he was speaking with the intentions of washing in hot water and of the mikveh, and I trembled: how can it be within human power to clothe such matters in stories and conversation, etc., etc.? End of quotation. See there. And see the holy Zohar (the portion Mishputim, folio 95a), where Rabbi Yosi told Rabbi Chiya that he was greatly distressed at having met on that road an elderly Arab who asked him all sorts of strange questions, which were idle questions (in Rabbi Yosi’s opinion); and he was greatly distressed that this old man had simply spoken idle and foolish words with him. And afterward it became clear to them that everything had been words of secrets and mysteries. See there. In Kochvay Oar (Avunehuh Barzel, item 1): Rabbi Noson, of righteous and blessed memory, said that before he drew close to our master, of righteous and blessed memory, he did not understand how Moshe Rabbainu’s spiritual stature and righteousness exceeded those of his father-in-law. For forty years he did not lie upon his bed to sleep, but only leaned upon the table. And when he slept at the table he held a candle in his hand; and when the flame reached his hand he was forced to wake, and returned to learning. And throughout the week he did not wash his hands for a fixed meal, because of the stringencies of washing the hands, but ate only pastry bread. But on Shabbos he washed his hands for eating with great stringencies. And he was orphaned in his childhood, and his father came to him after his passing to teach him Torah with him. Afterward, when I drew close to the tzaddikim among the Maggid’s disciples, of righteous and blessed memory, he understood that there is a great difference between his father-in-law and the tzaddikim who conduct themselves in the Baal Shem Tov’s way. For although his father-in-law was a tzaddik, as above, all his service nevertheless was not with fervor in the manner of the aforementioned tzaddikim. End of quotation. And since Akoodim is within a single vessel, through this the attributes blend together, as explained concerning the reason for the binding of Yitzchok. And then, in the world of Nikoodim, although blemish, nullification, and shattering will come upon them, God forbid, they will have the power to ascend and be separated out, since they were all, at their root, cleaving and bound, bond to bond, joined together. And this is [what was said there in the holy Zohar], ‘for the benefit of the worlds’—that is, for the benefit of the worlds that will be revealed after them, so that they may be separated out and rectified. EN: And elsewhere our teacher Rabbi Noson, of blessed memory, wrote (Halachos of Nezikin, Halacha 4, item 3): Every person must know that a hair's breadth is very, very precious, and at every moment he hangs by a hair's breadth. A person can cause very great damage through a hair's breadth, Heaven forbid; all the more, all the more can he repair much through a hair's breadth, for the measure of goodness is greater than the measure of punishment. For every person knows this within himself: that his main damage, blemishes and sins, Heaven forbid, all began from a hair's breadth: because at first he did not take care to guard his thought well and followed the tempter little by little, may the Merciful One spare us. As written (Yeshaya 5), ‘Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and sin as with the ropes of a wagon’; and as our Rabbis of blessed memory said, today he tells him, “Do this,” and tomorrow, etc. And according to the evil inclination's overpowering of a person each time, there would be, Heaven forbid, no hope. But the measure of goodness is greater, for a hair's breadth in holiness is very, very precious. And Hashem, blessed be He, in His compassion granted us many mitzvos every day. And every member of Yisrael draws himself from evil toward good every single day, for he goes from his home to the synagogue and the study hall every day, puts on a tallis and Tefillin, prays, answers “Amen, may His great Name,” and performs several mitzvos, etc., etc. And as our Rabbis of blessed memory said, even the sinners of Yisrael are full of mitzvos like a pomegranate. And although their mitzvos, too, contain much admixture of refuse, nevertheless there are in them at least several good points, which are the aspect of holy hairs that are very, very precious to Him, blessed be He. And likewise, even in matters of the desires and contemplations that overpower a person every day, someone who is somewhat upright certainly suffers greatly from this, and at every moment strengthens himself against the thoughts and contemplations. And every movement by which he detaches himself from them by a hair's breadth is very, very precious in His eyes, blessed be He, for He knew our inclination etc., and knows how it overpowers every single person. Therefore every movement, every movement, by which a person draws himself from the sitra achra toward holiness is precious in His eyes, blessed be He, even if it is literally only a hair's breadth. And as Rabbainu, of blessed memory, wrote: every member of Yisrael has self-sacrifice every day, etc. And as brought in the account of the tzaddik whom sadness overpowered, etc. How very, very precious a hair's breadth is, and even less than this—thousands of worlds are not worth as much as this. For a person is in the world of Aseyuh, which is full of klipos, and they cling closely to the person; were the Holy One, blessed be He, not to help him, he would fall into their hands, Heaven forbid. Therefore every person must consider his ways every day and at every moment, to guard himself carefully so that his thought does not begin to go outside the boundary of holiness, Heaven forbid, even by a hair's breadth. For through a blemish of a hair's breadth, when he veers from the path, he can wander far along perplexing paths, Heaven forbid, and this is understood from his words, of blessed memory, on the verse ‘I wandered like a lost sheep’ (in Likutay, part 1). And nevertheless one must also know the opposite: when they overpower him greatly and it seems to him that he has already wandered so far that he cannot stand against them, he must know and believe that every movement, every movement, by which he will detach and draw himself from them, even by a hair's breadth, is very, very precious beyond measure. And these hairs will be gathered together, and as the days multiply Hashem, blessed be He, will redeem him from them, and through them he will merit apprehensions of Godliness. These are drawn through holy contractions, which are the aspect of hairs made through the aspect of the above-mentioned hairs—through the fact that the Yisraelite draws himself from evil to good each time, whose essential matter depends on a hair's breadth. For even great tzaddikim hang at every moment by a hair's breadth, in the aspect of ‘Around Him it is exceedingly stormy.’ And as brought in his words, of blessed memory (in section 20), in the teaching תשע תיקונין (“Nine Rectifications”), concerning ‘And they hang by a single thread.’ End of quotation.
