</div>

They reach the height of fervor when Yisrael David sings “Veyetayu” (“And they shall come”) in the Breslov melody which the rabbi said had been taken from the songs of the Garden of Eden. Faces aflame and legs raised yearn upward. The knocking and pounding are deafening—and is this a light matter in your eyes? For here they are saying to crown the Creator of all as King over all, so that all the peoples of the earth may see the kingdom of Heaven. The storm keeps mounting. A chorus of thousands accompanies Yisrael David in a steady rhythm, without any conductor directing them; everyone concludes in a mighty voice: “And they shall give You a royal crown.”

## Segment 2

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

</div>

After the King of the world had been crowned, it was plainly felt that His kingship was close to spreading and being revealed, for He is King over all the earth. Yisrael David’s Musaf prayer lasted four hours. The worshippers’ freshness testified that Yisrael David had succeeded in raising everyone up and breathing into them a spirit of life, of love of God and service of the Creator. Everyone had the impression that, had Yisrael David wished to repeat the Musaf prayer and prolong it many times over, they would gladly have consented.

Lublin had never in its days seen such a spectacle. The streets of Lublin are filled with men, women, and children; along the roads Jewish Lublin, with its ten thousand Jews, stands and waits for the appearance of the rabbi and his disciples, accompanied by thousands of Breslov Hasidim. Here the rabbi appeared in his full splendor, shining with a pure and wondrous light. Thousands stream behind him and before him, while he is in their midst. With songs and praises, the rabbi is brought to the wooden bridge on Lubartowska Street, beneath which the Bystrzyca River flows; beside it the Tashlikh prayer will be recited. The Jews of Lublin themselves keep order, without allowing strangers to interfere with their joy. Because of the dreadful crowding, the procession from the yeshiva to the river takes far longer than usual. A scribe’s pen is incapable of describing the magnitude of the fervor at the moment the rabbi opened the Tashlikh prayer. Thousands of Jews shake the world with their prayer. From among them is heard a weeping voice full of sweetness issuing from the rabbi: “He will again have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” A wave of spiritual exaltation floods the worshippers—“He will again have compassion upon us”—such exaltation Lublin had never known. Circles upon circles form around the rabbi; arms interlock, hands clasp tightly, legs rise, and everyone goes forth in a mighty dance that terrifies the dancers and casts dread upon the gentiles of Lublin, who are astonished by a spectacle to which they were unaccustomed, and they murmur softly: “King of Israel.” The dancing continues and stretches from the river to the rabbi’s residence, and from there to the

great study hall, which is too small to contain the crowd filling it. One of the Breslovers climbs onto a bench and proclaims aloud, “And you shall be only joyful.” A new wave of joy floods the Breslovers, and they are all drawn into a dance that lasts for hours. With the appearance of Rabbi Aharon Leib Ziegelman, one of the veteran spiritual guides of the Breslov Hasidim, the dancing stops and the crowd falls silent.

Rabbi Aharon Leib opens with the words of his master: sadness and a broken heart are not identical. A broken heart is very dear before God and is in the aspect of “a son who importunes his father.” Not so sadness—anger and irritation are its lot. In practice—Aharon Leib continues—a broken heart is good for a person, but there is a danger that through it he will come to sadness. One should therefore set aside one hour a day for a broken heart, and for the rest, “You shall be only joyful”... The Rebbe said: “The main thing for me is Rosh Hashanah. After Rosh Hashanah I incline my ear to the wall to listen for the knocking of the shamash who awakens the congregation for the Selihot of the coming year.” His Hasidic discourse, interwoven with mysteries of Torah and pearls from the Torah of their great master, continues for about two hours; his words are heard with close attention. Throughout that entire time no one dared disturb him, but at the conclusion of his discourse a mighty song bursts forth, interrupted each time by another Hasid calling, “And you shall be only joyful.” The same spectacle recurs on the second night of Rosh Hashanah. The spiritual guides Rabbi Yitzhak Breiter and Rabbi Ben Zion Apter deliver words of Torah from the teachings of their master.

And before I conclude my article, I shall not neglect the memory of the Breslov Hasid who feared God more than many, Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak of Ostrowiec, who was the Breslovers’ Torah reader. His slow and emphatic reading, the rafe and the dagesh, the phrasing of the cantillation marks and the melodies, and his pleasant voice brought satisfaction to the listeners. A whole, pure, and holy service did the Breslov Hasidim perform during the days of Rosh Hashanah.

The power of the founder of the Breslov movement—the renowned tzaddik, mighty in deed and giant in spirit, the Admor Rabbi Nahman, of blessed memory, who said, “My ember will burn until the coming of the Redeemer”—stood the Breslovers in good stead, enabling them to endure for a long time without a spiritual leader in their midst and to achieve success in many Torah institutions in the Diaspora and in the Land. Happy is the eye that saw all these things.

Rabbi Nahman of Breslov said: It is good for a person to accustom himself to reviving his soul with a melody, for melody is a great and exceedingly lofty thing, and it has the power to awaken and draw a person to His blessed Name. Come and see how great the power of a melody is. Even our forefather Jacob, who sent his tribes to Joseph, sent with them a melody of the Land of Israel. This is the secret of "Take of the song of the land in your vessels," and as Rashi explained: zemeret—an expression of song. A melody is beautiful, and it is seven times more beautiful when sung together by Breslov Hasidim, for every melody from their treasury of melodies has a distinctive flavor and is pleasant to its listeners—especially when it issues from the communal prayer leaders of the Breslovers, who learned the secrets of prayer there in Uman, the burial place of this tzaddik, the place of song and prayer, the source of attachment to the tzaddik and the source of righteous deeds. And if tears open gates, then according to Rabbi Nahman's words, song brings down walls. Indeed, whoever merited to imbibe the fragrance of the Breslov prayers personally felt the walls fall and felt his tangible closeness to the King of the world, without a partition. Breslov Hasidim were scattered throughout all the cities of Poland. Most were desperately poor and filled with joy and gladness of spirit. Sabbath by Sabbath they sat together in their Hasidic houses and thirstily drank in their master's teaching, which was presented to them in a popular and understandable form by veteran Breslov Hasidim, to whom their master's books were clear and who excelled in easy, readily accepted explanation.

In their prayers the Breslovers entreated their Maker like a son who entreats his father. Their souls stormed in prayer, and the yearning heavenward stood out most of all on Rosh Hashanah, when their master commanded them to strive as far as possible to pray amid a great multitude and in the fellowship of friends. For Rabbi Nahman said this: all those close to the true tzaddik must gather together in one place on Rosh Hashanah and pray in attachment to the tzaddik; through this they receive a wondrous illumination, rectification, and great closeness, which they cannot merit throughout the entire year. Every Breslov Hasid had one sole aim in his life: to merit at least once to ascend to the city of Uman and prostrate himself at his grave, in order to pray and truly bind himself to the tzaddik. With self-sacrifice they strove to fulfill this aim. They crossed borders and bribed border guards—the essential thing was to reach the longed-for goal. And if the yearnings for fellowship were great throughout the year, they rose and grew sevenfold at the advent of Rosh Hashanah, for thus said the Rebbe: therefore one must break through every sort of obstacle and come to the Rosh Hashanah gathering with tremendous self-sacrifice, unless it is a matter of danger to life

—actual danger that overrides the Sabbath—which can prevent one from coming there. But every obstacle involving livelihood, money, exertion, honor, and the like must be broken and overcome. Faithful to their master's testament, the Breslovers chose the city of Lublin for the Rosh Hashanah "gathering," for the city had been sanctified with many forms of holiness. There Rabbi Shalom Shakhna, the first head of a yeshiva in Poland, spread Torah; he was the father-in-law of the father of halakhic ruling, our master Moses Isserles, known as the Rema of Kraków. There were Rabbi Jacob Pollak, father of pilpul and hilluk; the wondrous profound scholar, our master Solomon Luria, the Maharshal; the exalted commentator, our master Meir, Maharam of Lublin; and the Seer, our master Jacob Isaac Horowitz, who disseminated the teaching of Hasidism in Poland. Since the tzaddikim of the generation had determined that the fragrance of Jerusalem could be sensed in Lublin, the Breslovers desired to spend Rosh Hashanah in the study hall of the Seer of Lublin, who showed exceptional affection for their great master and even gave his approbation to the printing of his great book, "Likkutei Moharan"! Although the study hall of the Rebbe of Lublin was large—there the tzaddikim of the generation, the masters and rabbis, the great men and luminaries of Hasidism, poured out their supplication—it was nevertheless too narrow to contain the Breslov multitudes who came to the gathering. After the gaon Rabbi Meir Shapira, head of the "Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva," opened his famous yeshiva, he acceded to the request of the Breslov Hasidim and placed the yeshiva's halls at their disposal, enabling them to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with expansiveness of mind.

The zealous among them came early, for the Sabbath of Selihot. There was no need at all to ask their identity, for their appearance testified about them. Their scant baggage, their unfastidious dress, and the joy on their faces identified them as Breslov Hasidim. The following days brought multitudes of Hasidim with them, while on the night of "Zekhor Berit" the Breslov gathering was complete—not one person was missing. The leaders of the gathering surveyed those arriving and attended to their lodging. Multitudes streamed to the great study hall of Rabbi Meir Shapira, of blessed memory. Lubartowska Street, which led to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, was filled with people; old men, young men, and children streamed to the great gathering. They did not come to see the Rebbe's face, but rather to bind themselves to the tzaddik. For wherever they are, the power of the tzaddik is present, and that place is fit for the resting of the Divine Presence and for cleaving to the light of the countenance of the world. Friendly conversation developed among acquaintances who met at the gathering. New and old alike embraced and greeted one another in peace. At exactly two o'clock after midnight, a loud knock from atop the platform silenced the noise of those renewing their friendships, and amid the silence Shlomo Yehudah, the man from Otwock, proclaimed: "Zekhor Berit!" Rabbi Shlomo Yehudah Hoffman

from the town of Otwock, God-fearing and devout, who has nothing whatsoever in his world except faith and trust. Throughout the days of the week he toils hard to support his household and provide schooling for his tender children. With great difficulty he earns his bread from his labor. He does not complain about his lot—Heaven forbid; on the contrary, he rejoices in his portion and gladdens others whose lot is like his. As compensation for his poverty and wretchedness, God endowed him with a mighty voice like a lion’s roar; and when Shlomo Yuda passes before the lectern, he sets hearts alight and does not move from it until they are transformed into a fiery torch. Rabbi Shlomo Yuda answers the call, wraps himself in a tallit, and with fear and love descends before the lectern and begins with “Ashrei.” His mighty voice rolls and thunders; the great congregation is swept along in the mighty current of prayers and praises issuing from thousands of mouths. When he reaches “the Thirteen Attributes recited in supplication,” he pours himself out in the fullness of yearning and spreads his hands upward. One by one, he sends the Attributes before his Creator and implores them with fatherly affection to intercede favorably for the members of his congregation among all the Children of Israel. The tumult of prayer continues until daybreak, for the supplications and petitions designated for the night of “Zekhor Berit” are recited by the Breslovers without omission; and had there been others like them, they too would have been swallowed up by them. As the recitation of Selichot ends, preparations for the morning prayer begin; it too lasts for hours and includes the customary release from vows and the recitation of chapters of Psalms.

The Breslovers cleared the study hall, and the cleaning workers took their place. Emissaries on behalf of the leadership go from lodging to lodging, attend to their fellows’ needs, and offer their assistance to those having difficulties with arrangements. The heads of the community secluded themselves in their lodging and settled the final arrangements connected with the two days of Rosh Hashanah: who would pass before the lectern for the morning prayer, who for the Musaf prayer, who would read from the Torah, who would be called up to the Torah, who would deliver the Hasidic discourses, and who would recite the Ten Chapters of Psalms communally. Emissaries hurry out to the lodgings to give each person his assignment, with a request for the fullest preparation. The city of Lublin was taken over by the Breslovers, who spread through its streets and surveyed the ancient synagogues and the historical sites from the era of the geonim and the righteous who had dwelt there in honor; many of them went to prostrate themselves at the Seer’s holy grave. The yeshiva students who chose to remain in Lublin finish their preparations to greet the Day of Judgment in the circle of their great rabbi. The residents of Lublin turn their gaze toward the enormous building spreading its wings over the length and breadth of illustrious Lublin, and wait impatiently for the moment when the yeshiva’s gates will be opened wide, so that they can join the prayer of

The city of Lublin shed its secular form and donned the splendor of ancient days. Lublin’s streets, which remain still throughout the year, hum and surge with the masses of Hasidim streaming straight to the yeshiva. Royal splendor flows from the yeshiva. Dozens of chandeliers affixed to the ceiling shower forth a sea of lights and cast their rays across the breadth of Lublin, while extending a welcoming countenance to those entering its gates. A certain tension is perceptible on the faces of the community’s leaders. They are somewhat perplexed, for they have not yet decided whether to honor Rabbi Meir Shapiro with the evening prayer out of courtesy and respect, as their host and the local rabbinic authority, or to disregard all the compelling considerations—for, in the final analysis, a Hasidic following is a Hasidic following, and Rabbi Meir is not numbered among their Hasidim. Meanwhile, our acquaintance Shlama Yuda passed before the lectern for the afternoon prayer; when he finished the prayer and the rabbi took his place beside the platform and opened with the piyyut “Ahot Ketanah,” matters changed. His regal appearance, the majesty of his noble face, and his pleasant, serious voice influenced the heads of the community in the opposite direction: not only were they prepared to honor him with the evening prayer, but even with the Musaf prayer. Here the decision was reached: the rabbi of Lublin would pass before the lectern for the evening prayer. A delegation of dignitaries headed by the great spiritual mentor, Rabbi Yitzhak Breiter, presented itself before the rabbi; in the name of the holy community bound to the “flowing brook, source of wisdom,” the rabbi was asked to hallow the festival with his pleasant prayer. Rabbi Meir’s face shone with happiness; he did not conceal his satisfaction at the honor that had fallen to his lot. Although his voice was not as strong as Shlomo Yuda’s, through the pleasantness of his words, his distinctive sweetness, and his personal charm, he rose and surpassed all the prayer leaders at the gathering and swept the worshippers’ hearts by storm. The prayer of the multitudes intertwined with Rabbi Meir’s stirring prayer, and a precious pearl was formed and set into the royal crown of the Hearer of Prayers. Like b’nei maron—those passing one by one in judgment—the Breslovers pass before the rabbi and, with genuine joy, wish him a good year; he answers the blessings with a smile and an expansive spirit.

his charming face, and bent his upright stature. And if we may say so, then joy, too, had departed from him. One can see him in Bnei Brak; and just as in Poland he had no rest, for he spent most of his years at the graves of the righteous—once in Lublin, once in Kozhnitz, once in Peshischa—so too in our Holy Land he found no good in rest. He wanders among the holy places as a regular guest at the graves of the Tannaim, the Amoraim, and the Kabbalists. And if you ask where Ben Zion is from—he will immediately tell you: from Meron. The cheerful and happy Ben Zion of the Lublin period sits beside the rabbi and countless times repeats the well-known, stirring Breslov melody to the verse, “They crush Your people, O Lord.” The melody makes the heartstrings tremble, and the students of Yachl, who repeat the melody and help Rabbi Ben Zion, sob with weeping. The rabbi’s eyes, too, stream with tears. In a sad voice steeped in endless longing for something hidden and concealed, he intones time and again, “They crush Your people, O Lord”—the Shekhinah is in exile. As is known, Rabbi Meir Shapira does not countenance sadness; yet Breslov Hasidim, too, are not in sadness, especially on the night of Rosh Hashanah. Indeed, the essence of Hasidism is founded upon the joy that can raise a person to the highest level in the service of God. And have our Sages not already said: The Divine Presence rests neither amid sadness, nor amid idleness, nor amid laughter, nor amid levity, nor amid conversation, nor amid idle matters, but only amid the joy of a commandment. Very soon the concealed sorrow turns into manifest joy, finding expression in the rabbi’s stories, which bring those present into a world of love of Israel. The subjects of his stories are the righteous men of the generation: Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev, Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sasov, and Rabbi Uri of Strelisk. He envies these righteous men, who through their love of Israel reached the pinnacle of perfection. One of the Breslov Hasidic spiritual guides extols Rabbi Nahman’s love of Israel: his prayer followed this order. First he asked that he should feel Israel’s pain; afterward he prayed that he should feel the sufferings of the one who was suffering; and after all this, when a Jew came before him and related his troubles, he was immediately inside the trouble, and blood dripped from him because of the greatness of the pain and anguish..

</div>

This, says the rabbi, is a great measure of love of Israel. We find such a quality in the Rebbe, Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, who composed a special prayer to be said before the prayers, and who prayed, among other things: And save us from jealousy between one person and another; let no jealousy of any person arise in our heart, nor our jealousy toward others. On the contrary, place it in our heart that each of us should see the virtue of our fellow and not his shortcomings, and that each should speak with his fellow in the upright and desirable way before You. Only one who has acquired the quality of love of Israel in its perfection, says the rabbi, is capable of uttering such holy and pure words. Ben Zion

A person should never grow old. Old age, Rabbi Nahman said, is an ugly trait; a person must always renew himself, beginning and beginning again. This saying accompanied the Breslov Hasidim in their service. Therefore, long before dawn, the Breslov Hasidim streamed into the study hall of the yeshiva; and when dawn broke and announced the coming of the day, not one of them was absent. The one who began the prayers opened with “Adon Olam.” The congregation repeated after him with a great roar that could be heard far away. A mass of heads swayed fervently, in the sense of “All my bones shall say”; as they approached “HaMelekh,” the tumult increased. All together they prepared for the impressive ceremony of crowning the King of the world. Shlomo Yuda stretches himself; his tallit is folded into thirds down to half his body. Behind him are masses making noise with strange motions, sighs, and groans. Suddenly, as though at a command from above, the movement falls silent. Shlomo Yuda’s restrained, clear voice sounds like a cannon shot: H—H—H—H—M—L—Kh. After the noise comes a still, small voice: “He sits upon a high and exalted throne.” The quiet is over; thousands of mouths put an end to it, and now the study hall hums with the prayer of the multitude filling the space of the hall. Shlomo Yuda conducts the prayer, from time to time heightening the tension; like one old and accustomed, he strolls through the liturgical poems of the prayers. The closer he comes to the prayer’s conclusion, the more he raises his voice and awakens a new wave of tremendous fervor. The Breslov Hasidim performed a consummate service in the morning prayer; but the Breslov Hasidim, who perpetually renew themselves, would not weary of continuing their service. Immediately after the prayer, preparations for the shofar blasts begin. The select few among them surround the righteous Rabbi Ephraim Krakowski, one of the great Breslov Hasidim and distinguished for good deeds, and incline their ears to the instructions concerning the blasts that issue from his mouth. Rabbi Ephraim Krakowski of Pshedbozh, one of the exalted figures among the Breslov Hasidim, was an influential teacher and guide, an innocent righteous man who never in his life harmed anyone. The Breslov Hasidim cleaved to him. All his sacred service was directed toward reaching the Land and rising higher in the service of God. Indeed, he succeeded in immigrating to the Land and cherishing its dust. In America, a book collecting his letters on Hasidism was published. His love of Israel and his love of the Land of Israel emerge from every single word. He died in holiness and purity in Jerusalem. Another group follows intently the movements of Rabbi Pinhasel of Pshedbozh, who, according to the testimony of the Breslov Hasidim, is worthy of leading a large community of Hasidim

At the Breslov gathering he effaced himself from existence; all his movements expressed holiness. In all his days he saw no wrong in any Jew, and he always found merit with which to defend the unseen deeds of individuals. Everyone who came into contact with him merited to hear, with understanding, from the teachings of his master. Above all, he was interested in influencing them to undertake to recite every day ten chapters of Psalms for the rectification of the great sin for which, according to the words of our Sages of blessed memory, the sinner has almost no remedy. Rabbi Nachman merited to reveal one of the hidden secrets of repentance, and said that by reciting ten known psalms, whose mnemonic is—one can find a rectification for this sin. Of the revelation of this secret, his faithful and devoted disciple Rabbi Nathan relates, among other things: “Afterward, close to that time, while I was at home in Nemirov, he then revealed the ten chapters of Psalms in the presence of the rabbi here in Breslov and my companion R. Naphtali of Nemirov, and appointed them as witnesses to this. He said that even when his days should be fulfilled, then, after his passing, whoever comes to his grave and recites these ten chapters of Psalms there and gives a coin to charity on his behalf—even if his transgressions and sins have grown and become exceedingly mighty, Heaven forbid—I shall then exert myself and endeavor, lengthwise and breadthwise, to save him and rectify him.” Consequently, Rabbi Pinchasl took it upon himself to awaken this idea among the broad public. It is understandable that, at the great occasion of the gathering of thousands in Lublin, he found broad scope for instilling this holy idea, of which his master said, according to another version, that whoever recites them—even if he is sunk in the forty-nine gates of impurity—he, Rabbi Nachman, will stretch himself out lengthwise and breadthwise, drag the sinner by his beard and sidelocks, and take him out of the nethermost Sheol. Have you heard such awesome words, which pierce and penetrate the chambers of the belly? Who would not tremble and try to recite them at least once in his life? This time Rabbi Pinchasl attached himself to the host rabbi and, as his fine powers of persuasion enabled him, tried to influence him to recite the ten chapters of Psalms out of their usual order, as Rabbi Nachman of Breslov had designated them. For his part, the rabbi accepted his proposal with great joy: surely the recitation of Psalms is efficacious throughout the year, and all the more so on Rosh Hashanah, and especially before the shofar blasts. Therefore, when Itche Meir Lubliner approached the lectern to recite the psalms, he found the rabbi at his side. Rabbi Pinchasl's face shone with joy: he had succeeded in gaining one great soul for his master's idea. Meanwhile, the ordinary Breslovers whispered among themselves: behold, the great rabbi of Lublin has formally joined the Breslov Hasidim, and the proof is his fervor in reciting the psalms that our Rebbe instituted.

This time, unlike at the evening prayer the night before, the leaders of the congregation took the initiative and honored the rabbi with sounding the shofar, and appointed Rabbi Pinchas as the prompter. The choice was accepted with affection

and agreement, as a matter of course. Meanwhile, the rabbi went down to the ritual bath, came up and dried himself, put on the kittel, girded his sash, wrapped himself in his tallit, and thrust countless shofars into his belt; with slow steps he made his way to the platform. Those close to him sensed his mighty efforts to stop the mouths of the accusers. His sidelocks scattered and fluttered in the light breeze that blew through the open windows; beads of sweat covered his face, which shed its form and changed hues. His teeth knocked one against another, and his whole body trembled. Terrible tension prevailed in the study hall when the rabbi brought the shofar to his mouth to sound the blasts. Clear, beautiful, pure sounds issued from his holy mouth, without interruption and without flaw, as though by a mere passing of breath. A good sign, the Breslovers intimated: in his great battle, the rabbi had defeated Satan; the gates of mercy had opened, and the way had been cleared for the Musaf prayer.

A clear voice, the finest of the fine, made its way through the silence that had settled over the hall, which was filled from end to end, and showered dew of revival upon the dry bones of the thousands of worshipers who stood pouring out their whispered supplications since dawn: “P-r-a-i-s-e t-h-e N-a-m-e...” Thousands of shining eyes were turned toward the platform standing at the center of the hall. Beside the rabbi stood Rabbi Israel David Greenhaus, the “Musaf leader,” with a Torah scroll in his hand; at that moment he turned and walked slowly to the lectern. Rabbi Israel David possessed all the favorable marks by which our Sages of blessed memory characterized a prayer leader: his beard was full-grown, his record was fair, he had children to support, and his house was empty of everything. His voice indeed did not thunder like that of Shlomo Yuda, but his voice possessed a superior quality, for it penetrated directly into the listeners’ hearts and breathed a living spirit into the words of the prayer. Whoever heard Rabbi Israel David pray felt the word. With all its intentions, he rose to the lofty levels of prayer with concentration. Concerning the voice in prayer, Rabbi Nachman said: by a person’s voice one can recognize the degree of his kingship, and no two voices are alike. There is a voice of a mighty response, and there is a voice of a feeble response. A voice in the category of a “lion’s roar”—such was the voice of Shlomo Yuda—and a voice deemed a fine sound of silence, and a voice that is a voice of weeping—such was the voice of Israel David—and with this voice he conquered hearts. When Israel David began “Here I am, poor in deeds,” in the traditional melody of Rabbi Pinchasl of Koretz, springs of tears pooled on the synagogue floor. Israel David brought entire worlds before you: every liturgical poem was a new world, and every melody was fitted to the prayer. His prayers were presented in a form as comprehensible as “Happy are those who dwell in Your house,” recited three times each day. Great was his power in setting and in phrasing the cantillation. The congregation was entirely stripped of the vanities of the world. Hands were spread upward and eyes protruded as though they had left their sockets; their souls went out as they spoke before their Creator. Such freshness, such fervor, as though they had only just begun to pray. To the climax
