Our master z"tl said: being particular about which food one loves to eat etc. — this is the lust of eating. And as is recounted of R. Nachman Tulshiner z"tl — that he never salted his food.

Our master z"tl spoke with his daughter Soreke z"l about the matter of hospitality [hachnasat orchim] — and greatly praised the greatness of this mitzvah — so that she would accustom herself to it. And she worried about how one could possibly fulfil this mitzvah. Our master z"tl said to her: A oreyakh — nokh a shtikl bulke un a shtikl tishtikh! [A guest — another little roll — and another little piece of tablecloth!]

Segment 3

At the time our master z"l was speaking: when a person is in anguish and distress — Shreit er gar andersh [He cries out completely differently] — from the depth of the heart. And he recounted then: "They pulled me — a bloz [blast] — for three days." Ikh hob aber dennesmol gishmak gishrigen tsu Hashem yisborakh! [But I then cried out in sweetness to Hashem, may He be blessed!]

Our master z"l said: a Jew must pray that he should have many children — and how they will be — for when Mashiach comes and rectifies the world — the entire world will be a rectification for all the generations back to Adam the first man.

Once before Passover they were whitewashing the house of our master z"tl in Breslov — and they were taking all the household vessels outside as is customary. And on the vessels that remained — they spread curtains so they would not get dirty. And the daughter of our master z"l, Madam Adil, spread a head-kerchief [kapintikhl] over the clock [zeyger]. And when our master z"tl came into the house and saw this — he said to her: Nit mit azoy a zakh far shpreyt men — varum es iz farhandn haynt azelkhe farmishte moykhos — vos afile dos iz zey mevalbel! [One does not spread such a thing — for today there exist such confused minds that even this confuses them!]

And Rabbi Naftali answered: I will go after the prayer. And our master z"tl said: In Rosh Chodesh darf men friyer geyen in vaser arayn! [On Rosh Chodesh one must go into the water first!]

Yoski z"l was sitting on one side — and she sat on the other side — and our master z"tl sat between them. Our master z"tl answered and said: Gleybt mir — di velt vet aykh nokh mekane zayn mit dayne kinder — du vest nokh der lebn kinder — [Believe me — the world will yet envy you for your children — you will yet live to see children —] un kindskinder! [Our troubles, our sufferings — they taste big pearls — and to Soreke — little pearls!] For to the daughter of a certain famous one — her father-in-law R. The way of our master z"tl was in great concealment — to the extent that even before his father-in-law he concealed himself very much. In winter his father-in-law saw our master z"tl going to the frozen river to slide with the small boys — and thought he did not learn at all. He was a great hospitality provider — and all the Tzadikim lodged at his home. Once a disciple of the Maggid lodged there and told him his anguish: that he had taken as a son-in-law a grandson of the Baal Shem Tov — but he does not learn at all — and has certainly even forgotten the Hebrew. The guest said he was surely wrong — afraid to speak against a grandson of the Baal Shem Tov. The father-in-law argued until the guest said: "If so — I will give him a laynen." And he tested our master z"tl in the Mishnah: "Hakelev vehagedi shekaftzu meiro'sh hagag" [the dog and the goat that jumped from the roof — Bava Kamma 21b]. And our master z"l said: "Hakalev vehagadi shekafatzu marsh [garbled]." The guest was greatly ashamed. And the father-in-law said: "Did I not tell you he has even forgotten the Hebrew?" Yet even so the guest did not reproach our master before the father-in-law — fearing to cause enmity against a grandson of the Baal Shem Tov. But afterwards he met our master z"tl privately under the wall of the house and asked: "Can this be? Are you not the grandson of the Baal Shem Tov and of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka? Your father-in-law scattered a large sum for the dowry because of the lineage — and you do not learn at all — to the extent that you have even forgotten the Hebrew!" And in the midst of these words — he gave him two slaps on the cheek. And our master z"l wept greatly and did not answer him a word. And afterwards — this man was traveling on the road through a forest and heard a sound of crying. He told the wagoner to incline his ear — and they heard it was a human voice. He inclined his ear further and heard: it was the voice of prayer. He descended from the wagon and followed the voice — and came to where our master z"tl was — and found him wrapped in tallis and tefillin — crying out in voices of voices to the heart of the heavens — and around him was like a river of tears and weeping — praying the Halleluyas of Pesukei deZimrah. He was greatly startled. He waited until our master z"tl finished his prayer. And then he began to beg forgiveness for the blows and the insults. And our master z"tl said: he would not forgive him until he promised certainly not to publicize the matter all the days of the life of our master z"l. But this he accomplished with him: that he return to the father-in-law and say — do not interfere in his matters — do not separate him from his way — for we do not know the plain meaning regarding the grandsons of the Baal Shem Tov. And since he lived long after the passing of our master z"tl — he recounted the entire story before the Rav R. Chaykil after his passing, peace be upon him.

At the wedding of his daughter Miriam — our master z"tl traveled with his household to the Rav at Valtshisk — out of honor for the Rav. And afterwards the Rav recounted his anguish to our master regarding what happened and was difficult for him there. And our master z"l said quietly to his people so that the Rav would not hear: Ikh veys, ikh veys — du host shlekhti oygn. Zolstu hobn gute oygn — volstu tsu mir giphorn oyf khasune — nisht ikh tsu dir! And in the meantime our master z"l recounted the Story of the Circle [maase haiggul]. And then our master z"tl said: "If he had to tell such a story as this — how many preparations would have been needed beforehand!"

The way of our master z"tl in his youth was in concealment. And he was accustomed to pay his father-in-law's wagon driver some sum to travel with him every morning before daylight in winter — to the grave [it seems to me] of Rabbi Yeshayah of Yanov. And he would return before daylight so that his father-in-law noticed nothing whatsoever. Once his father-in-law came and saw the horses were covered in sweat — understood something was afoot — asked the servant — and was compelled to tell him the truth.

And Moharan"as spoke about this and said: these words apply only when Torah is his craft [umanuто]. But if he learns only a little and wastes the rest — it is a mitzvah to tell this young scholar to go trade — and to set fixed times for Torah.

And Moharan"as remarked that the sukkah was not kosher — to the extent that one should not make Kiddush in it. And our master z"l rebuked him: one should not raise questions to invalidate it because of stringencies.

When our master z"l was in Lemberg, a man who was a great provider of hospitality, at whose home many guests ate, asked him to eat with him. Our master z"tl said to him, "Do you not already have many guests even without me?" The man replied, "I want to perform the mitzvah through you." Our master z"tl answered him, "I want the mitzvah for myself." Nevertheless, the man pressed him so insistently that he was compelled to promise him that he would eat one meal at his home, and so it was. Afterwards our master z"tl said that he envied him: he sat like a guter Yid—a Chassidic Rebbe—with Chassidim. Moreover, when people depart from all the other guter Yidn, they give them money, whereas he gave money to every person.

Moharan"as suffered anguish in raising his children, may the Merciful One spare us. He did not tell our master z"l about it, because he was so deeply attached to the service of Hashem, may He be blessed, and that was the main thing for him to discuss with our master z"tl. Yet because at that time he was accustomed to recount all that happened to him before our master z"tl, his anguish would enter into his account. Once our master z"l said to him, "The matter of your anguish in raising your children has entered my mind somewhat, but for this you must give me money." Moharan"as said to him, "Indeed, I had already thought of making six chairs for you." Our master z"tl said to him, "Not for drawing close to me, for on account of that I ought to give you money, since 'Fortunate is the one who takes hold of the hands of the guilty.' But for the matter just mentioned, you must give me money." And so it was: he made him six chairs, and he had five sons and one daughter.

Someone asked R. Gershon, a grandson of the Maggid of Tirhavitze z"tl, "Tell me of some aspect of the greatness of our master z"tl." He told him three things: First, if our master looked at someone, even from behind, the person immediately felt it. Second, although at times his face was covered with flies, he did not raise his hands to drive them away. Third, our master z"tl once rebuked R. Gershon for not praying properly. This was difficult for him to accept, because he prayed with fervor and great exertion, and he said to our master z"l, "It seems to me that I am praying." Our master z"tl replied, "Do not pray while merely imagining that you are praying." This was even more difficult for him. Later, toward evening, when he entered the study hall with our master z"tl, our master z"tl instructed him to enter first and then walked behind him to his own place. R. Gershon was thus compelled to pray Mincha beside our master z"tl. He was profoundly moved by our master's prayer, felt devekut, and then understood that he had never prayed in his life. On another occasion our master z"tl wished to give him wealth, but he did not want it, and so forth, as related in Osos uMofsim [Signs and Wonders].

He added, "I do not mean the men of Tsherin, nor those of Breslov, nor those of Teplik." He did not mention Tirhavitze, and they understood who the man was, for a man from Tirhavitze was present who had not had peace in his home for about two years. Our master z"tl immediately rose from the table and entered his room. That man stood at the doorway and wept exceedingly. On the Gemara [Chagigah 5a]: "This Torah scholar — the Angel of Death is lenient with him [meyasfena leih]." And our master z"tl raised the question: does the Angel of Death love a Torah scholar? Rather — what is written there — that he kills him earlier in his years — so that most of his years will be good.

Someone asked our master z"tl, "Why is there no book about you like Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov, the book that exists about the Baal Shem Tov z"tl?" Our master answered him, "How was Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov produced? After the passing of the Baal Shem Tov, the disciples gathered and each one recounted what he knew. The gathering was held at the home of the Rav R. Gedalyah, who knew all the stories about the Baal Shem Tov z"tl. There was also another person who likewise knew stories, and from this Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov was produced. It seems that the Rav R. Gedalyah of Linits compiled Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov." Afterwards our master z"tl said in these words: "There will also be things to tell about me."

The first Megilas Setarim [Scroll of Secrets] was told when our master z"tl was traveling on the road from Ladizhin to Breslov, and Cossacks passed by. Our master z"l began to speak about the country of Russia and about what would take place until the coming of the Redeemer, and from the coming of the Redeemer until the resurrection of the dead. Sitting beside our master z"tl were R. Yoske, his son-in-law, together with Moharanat and R. Naftali z"tl, while two men from Teplik sat on the step of the wagon, one on either side. Afterward Moharanat wanted to review one of the statements with R. Yoske, but Moharanat saw that he knew nothing of it. He related only that he had heard our master z"tl say at the end: "A tree with golden leaves." The two men from Teplik likewise had heard nothing at all. When R. Nathan and R. Naftali saw this, they understood that our master z"tl wanted the matter to remain secret, and so it was. Therefore Moharanat wrote the Megilas Setarim in initial letters.

The second Megilas Setarim was told after the passing of the holy child Rabbi Shlomo Efraim z"l, when the wife of our master z"tl complained about our master z"tl before R. Nathan and R. Naftali: first, that he did not look after himself; second, why he subjected himself to being tossed about on the roads; and third, that he had allowed the child to pass away. Our master z"tl said to R. Nathan and R. Naftali: "On the contrary! You be the judges. She is distressed over the child." He then raised his voice in weeping and shed copious tears, until R. Nathan and R. Naftali fled from before him out of shame. This is related in Chayei Moharan and in Yemei Moharanat. In the morning, which was the yahrzeit of the Ari z"l, our master z"tl said to them: "Why did you flee? Had you not fled, I would have told you beautiful things," as is explained there in part. He then gave Torah 65, "And Boaz said to Ruth," and so forth. Afterward he called them and opened the door of the beis midrash that stood beside the house of our master z"l. The Rav of Breslov was then in the beis midrash, and our master z"l did not want him to be present while the account was told. As soon as our master z"l opened the door, that Rav opened the second door and went outside. Our master z"l then went at once and closed the door, and told them the Megilas Setarim a second time.

And he sent the servant to tell them to sing zmirot. Immediately upon hearing — Moharan"as began to sing. Afterwards our master z"tl asked: firstly — why were you not singing on your own? And secondly — when I commanded to sing — it was R. Naftali who should have sung — for he had the voice of melody. And our master z"tl longed that there be a cantor who could sing — and also be a proper man.

When our master z"l was in the Land of Israel, he promised Rav Avraham Kalisker z"l that as soon as he returned to the Diaspora he would immediately travel to the Rav of Ladi, Rav Shneur Zalman, to speak with him about the funds for the Land of Israel. He fulfilled this: when he arrived home, he did not get down from the wagon to enter his house, but immediately traveled on to the Rav of Ladi. When he arrived there, he spoke with two of the Rav's men about the subject of Chabad, and our master z"tl asked them to explain a certain matter to him. Afterward the Rav asked our master z"tl to deliver a Torah teaching before him, but he did not wish to do so. The Rav then delivered a Torah teaching for approximately eight hours. Our master z"tl said that on one point, "He hit it very well": the Rav concluded then on the verse, "Your mercies are many, Hashem," interpreting it, "Your mercies—the compassion upon You Yourself, Hashem—are very great." Once the Rav z"tl was in Breslov with our master z"tl while traveling to Mezhibuzh. At that time Rav Baruch z"tl was opposing him. Our master z"tl then said to his men concerning the Rav: "Give honor to a commander of a thousand." Our master z"tl asked the Rav whether it was true, as people said, that he had eighty thousand chassidim. The Rav answered that he had chassidim who were teachers, and each one had a charity box for him; since the boys gave charity for him, they presumably would not become his opponents. The Rav then defended himself before our master z"tl regarding Rav Baruch z"tl. Our master z"tl said to him: "Petersburg you have overcome, but Peter-Baruch [Uncle Baruch] you will not overcome," and so forth.

Our master z"tl said to him: you should have taken a stick and struck him — because he does not sit at home on Torah and service! And said: devote yourself to Torah and service — and Hashem will give you livelihood.

This is the general rule: before our master z"tl wished to deliver any Torah teaching, he would command the men of our fellowship to pray Mincha with great concentration, as on the eve of Yom Kippur, and to confess. On Rosh HaShanah he would deliver the Torah teaching at twilight between the first and second days; on Shavuot likewise, as on Rosh HaShanah. I heard that once our master z"tl sat down to deliver a Torah teaching on Shavuot after Mincha, while the sun was still shining. They sat at the table all night, and he prayed Maariv in the midst of the meal. They remained seated until the sun began to shine again on the morning of the second day. Our master z"l spoke up and said: "Di zun kert zikh far khidushim; zi hot iber gelozt mentshn baym tish, un hot tsurik gefunen di eigene mentshn baym tish" ["The sun must be marveling: it left people at the table, and on returning found the very same people at the table."] I heard that our master z"tl did not sleep on Shavuot throughout the two days and nights. Our master z"tl said: "On Shavuot the essential thing is to stay awake, and on Hoshana Rabbah the essential thing is the recitation."

Shimon came from beyond the Dan River — he asked our master z"tl to promise him that he would serve him after his passing. He understood that our master z"tl did not want — and fell silent. After a time he asked again — and mentioned to our master z"tl how he had once saved him from death: when they were traveling from the village of Osatin to Medvedevka [or the reverse] along the slope of a mountain — and R. Shimon understood the wagon would overturn. And they were all in mortal danger — for the road was full of stones and pits. And R. Shimon jumped from the wagon and held it back — and saved all the people. And our master z"tl answered him: avadai hostu gut gimakht — "certainly you did well" — hinting that because of this alone he could not yet merit such a great thing. And R. Shimon was silent again. After yet more time he asked once more. And our master z"tl told him: how his [Rebbe's] mother came to him in a dream asking why he was not promising him this — and therefore he promised him then. And the Rav R. Nachman of Tulchin recounted that Moharan"as greatly envied him. And R. Shimon once came from the Land of Israel to arrange a match for his son — and was on the great Shabbos at Moharan"as. And he said then of Moharan"as: "I thought this was a disciple of our master z"tl — and in the end he is our master himself!" And he said then to the son-in-law of the Maggid of Tirhavitze: "I tell you that today he is the leader of the generation."

And the Baal Shem Tov z"l came to him and said: "Why are you so distressed?" He said: "Is not my daughter so ill?" The Baal Shem Tov said to him: "Is it not what is written in Psalms: 'He who magnifies the salvations of His king and does kindness to His anointed — to David and to his seed forever' — Magdil yeshuos malko: who are kings? The Rabbis [man malkhei? Rabbanan]. And 'does kindness to His anointed' — to one who anoints and speaks about them. 'To David and to his seed forever' — this is our master and his descendants who come from the seed of King David, peace be upon him." And then our master z"l recounted the story of the Maharsha to his daughter Adil — and she was healed. [It seems to me the story of how they were leading him to burial and there was impurity in Ostrah — that whoever passed through converted — and when they led the Maharsha through, the house of abomination was swallowed — and he concluded then with Magdil etc.] And she recounted it to several ill people — and they were healed. And so the Rav R. Nachman of Tulchin z"l also recounted — and so it was etc.

And our master, the holy one, said: "There will yet be a time when you will be in great joy — and therefore you shall have a remedy." And so it was. [And see at length in Osos uMofsim.]

Close to our master, the holy one, were Rabbi Matisyahu Leib of Yampoli and Rabbi Yaakov the proofreader [baal magiah], and they were brothers. Our master, the holy one, drew the aforementioned Rabbi Matisyahu closer because he had greater fear of Heaven. Rabbi Yaakov felt discouraged by this, because he was the older brother. Our master, the holy one, perceived this and said to him in these words: "Why is it so difficult? In one place it is written in the Torah, 'Yet his younger brother shall be greater than he' [Genesis 48:19]. And then again it is written, 'And if a man is pure and was not on the road' [Numbers 9:13]." The aforementioned Rabbi Yaakov was a proofreader, and it was generally his way to be on the road—hence the play on the verse.

When our master z"l saw him, he said to him in astonishment: "Have you seen the great power of prayer? His decree had already been sealed that he should die, yet through her prayer she accomplished not only that he should live, but even that he should have long life. The Rav R. Yitzchak of Khershivate — who was close to our master z"tl — had a brother. And a tax-farmer took him as a son-in-law in a village near Rorid to sit on the river — to learn Torah and serve Hashem — for he was a good young man. And when he was there without companions — he wasted his studying and went out from the house of study to the river. And there was a blacksmith plying his trade — and he watched the blacksmith and the fish being caught — and stood thus without an outer garment and without a belt. And once our master z"tl was traveling through there. And the young scholar saw a wagon full of people with men standing on the running-boards on each side — and understood that this was a holy Rebbe. And he began to run home in shame. But immediately our master z"tl gestured with his hands that he should come — and he was compelled to come. And they asked him to show them an inn. And our master z"tl asked who he was. And when he answered: Azoy — mayn Yitzkhak's bruder! [Is that so — my Yitzchak's brother!] And he rebuked him: "Presumably your father-in-law took you as a good young man to learn etc. — and you waste time and go out to watch the blacksmith and the fish!" Until he was filled with repentance and regret and shame. And he wept greatly — and from then on became a great diligent scholar. And our master z"tl drew him very very close. And said to him: "Presumably you will want to travel to me — and you will have obstacles — and break through them. Know that my affair is only Rosh HaShanah." And so it was — and he came for Rosh HaShanah. He was tired and lay down near the shtibel of our master z"tl before Zechor Bris. When he woke up he saw the tumult of people entering with pidyonos to our master z"l. He pushed himself in together with someone else. And immediately our master z"tl gestured to the other one to leave. And he closed the door and said: "Nu — say — what Hashem and I and you know." And he answered he had nothing to confess. And our master z"tl said several times: "Say" — and he each time answered: there is nothing to confess. Then our master z"tl said: Mikh vestu naren?! [Me — you will deceive?!] And he tapped with his finger on his nose and drew out the words: "Do I not know what happens with you even when you lie on your bed?" And he pushed him out. And after some years he came again — and our master z"l made a witticism about him — and he was rejected and no longer traveled. And long afterwards — after the passing of our master z"l — he told R. Meir of Teplik z"tl that our master z"tl had distanced him. R. Meir said: "This is called distancing? With such a Rebbe I would even let myself be trodden upon — er zol tretn oyf mir!" [And the Rav R. Avrohom z"l explained: our master fulfilled what is brought in Sefer HaMidos — that if one draws a person close and he refuses — it is permitted to push him away with both hands.] From the handwriting of R. Meir Anshein — who wrote from R. Avrohom z"l — and R. Avrohom proofread them.

Our master z"l said: the evil inclination of a proper Jew is a dibbuk. Der yetser hore fun eyn erlikhen Yudn iz eyn dibbuk. [The evil inclination of a proper Jew is a dibbuk.] He also said: when the evil inclination wants to come to a proper Jew — it attaches to him some madness, G-d forbid. He also said: several Tzadikim only broke themselves from their desires completely in old age. And with this was connected the explanation his father R. Nachman Tulshiner z"l gave of the saying of our Sages regarding the elders of the amei ha'aretz — "as long as they age their mind becomes confused" — through a parable: a merchant once traveled with a drunk non-Jewish wagoner. At every inn the wagoner entered and drank with the drunkards for a long time. They came to a ruined inn — and even there the wagoner descended and at every window opened and looked and groaned. When he climbed back the merchant asked why. He answered: he was remembering the good old days — "Here I drank with friends — we ate and drank and were joyful — and now alas!" So too the elders of the amei ha'aretz: from their youth they were accustomed to their desires and never longed to break a desire — so in old age when the desire remains but the body is weakened — their mind is simply mad from this. But the elders of Torah scholars — all their youth was full of longing to shatter their desires — so in old age when the limbs weaken and their longing is fulfilled — their mind settles. And in the end — they merited what they had always desired.

Once several men debated and argued before our master z"l over the explanation and interpretation of a certain matter. One said that this was the plain meaning, another said that this was the plain meaning, and a third and a fourth likewise offered other interpretations. At last our master z"l said of one interpretation that it was divine inspiration [ruach hakodesh]; the man who offered that interpretation had said it in the name of the Taz [Turei Zahav]. Our master z"l likewise praised the Be'er Heitev. (The Rav R. Avraham z"l said that it is a rule: whichever halachic authority's words the Be'er Heitev concludes with, that is the opinion he accepts as the halachah.) Once a man disputed with Moharan"as over the interpretation of a certain statement in the Magen Avraham, and the man very strongly resisted Moharan"as's interpretation. At last Moharan"as z"l said to him: "Enough debating with me. The Magen Avraham himself was with me and explained this matter to me just as I am explaining it to you." On another occasion someone came before R. Naftali in astonishment and related that there was a simple householder in Uman whose practice was to spend the entire Sabbath day studying the holy Or HaChaim. Once he had difficulty understanding a certain matter in the holy Or HaChaim and occupied his thoughts with it until he fell asleep at the table on which he was leaning. The Or HaChaim himself came to him and explained the matter that had been difficult for him. R. Naftali told him: "It is possible to believe this, because of the greatness of the attachment he had to the Or HaChaim's commentary."

Our master z"l said: for the Angel of Death to kill the entire world, physically and spiritually, would be too difficult for him. He therefore stationed helpers for himself everywhere: the doctors, to kill physically, and the false famous rebbes, to kill spiritually. (Once, when Moharan"as z"l was in Teplik, he fell gravely ill. Without asking him, they brought him a doctor. When the doctor arrived, Moharan"as turned his face to the wall and said: "You have brought me an emissary of the Angel of Death." On another occasion an iron nail became embedded in Moharan"as's foot, causing him great pain. They brought him a certain leaf reputed to be efficacious for this and told him that it worked only as a segulah, not as a medical remedy, but he would not use it. He answered: "If it has the power to heal, it also has the power to cause harm." With Hashem's help, he recovered without it.) Our master z"l also said: "When doctors do sometimes repair something, it is only like patching a garment by putting on a patch." He also said: "I am afraid of two: a gentile and a fraudulent guter Yid [rebbe]. They have no idea how far their power reaches. If they knew it, they would be even worse, may Hashem protect us." Our master z"l said: "When one is healthy, one must do and do and do in the service of Hashem; but when one becomes ill, the scissors and irons are put away." (One should then engage only in the service of Hashem required by the Shulchan Aruch, in accordance with the state of one's health.) One must fulfill the commandment, "You shall carefully guard your lives," and so forth.

R. Meir z"l recounted: a young man told before our master z"l that he had completed Tractate Niddah. And our master z"l asked him: "If so — tell me: why is it that when a person has an evil eye — he yawns [genetsn] and opens his mouth?" At night he had no fire with which to light his candle, so he went to a certain house, woke the householder from his sleep, and took fire from him to light the candle. The householder wanted to go back to sleep. R. Dov z"l told him: "I have a received tradition from our master z"l that when someone is awakened from sleep at night, it is certainly from Heaven, and he should not let himself go back to sleep." The aforementioned R. Dov had a business venture with partners. Afterwards he received word that the business was not going well and that the venture had suffered a loss. When he received the letter, he did not move from his place; he summoned the Rav and told him that he had intended to take a share in the venture. He acted this way so that the adversary would not entice him to change what had been in his mind at the time the partnership was formed.

R. Yudel of Dashiv had a circumcision on the eve of the holy Sabbath. Immediately after the Grace After Meals he went home, and he related this to the Admo"r z"l. The Admo"r z"l rebuked him for having gone home immediately. He said: "Surely one can also go to the mikveh toward evening. Had you remained there longer, perhaps you could have illuminated some word for them, or inspired one of them to give charity, and it would have been beneficial both for them and for you." I heard from my relative by marriage, R. Y. M. of Tsherin, who related that in Medvedevka there was a young married man whose wife was having extreme difficulty giving birth. He saw that more than a full day had already passed and she still had not given birth. On the holy Sabbath night he went to the Rav, Rabbi Yudel z"l, arriving while Rabbi Yudel was reciting Shalom Aleichem. When he had finished, Rabbi Yudel asked him, "What do you want?" He replied that his wife was having difficulty giving birth. R. Yudel took his tobacco box and told him, "Open the box." He was unable to open it. R. Yudel said to him, "You shlimazel! Give me the box. Go home, and on the way they will wish you mazal tov." And so it was: on the way they wished him mazal tov, for his wife had already given birth. Until here is from the manuscript.

R. Shmuel Yitzchak of Teplik recounted: once when he was in Lemberg with our master z"l — and they saw a regiment of soldiers being led. Our master z"l told him to count such-and-such rows — and in that row to count such-and-such men — and to roll up that man's sleeve. And so he did — and he saw that the man was dressed in burial shrouds. And our master z"l said: this is the road along which the angels of destruction lead a person to Gehinnom. And R. Shmuel Yitzchak also recounted: once he was traveling with our master z"l and the horses went on their own. And they entered a forest and saw from afar a house with empty rooms. And they entered a room — and there was a man sitting playing chess with a woman. Our master z"l said to him: "Do you know me?" He said he did not. Our master z"l asked about his wheat dealings with a certain landowner — the man admitted the dealings but denied knowing Rebbe. Our master z"l mentioned many signs — and the man held firm he did not know him. Then our master z"l fixed his eyes on him — and with this drew him close. When our master z"l went out the man followed — and Rebbe spoke with him some words — and he wept greatly with bitter tears. And afterwards they traveled on their way.

When our master z"l traveled to Breslov — he traveled via Uman. And then was the story of what happened when he passed by the old cemetery — and it was pleasing in his eyes — as is brought in Chayay Moharan and Yimei Moharan"as. And then when he was in Uman — there was a great and distinguished shochet who drew close to him. And he asked our master z"l whether he could travel to him for Rosh HaShanah through practical kabbalah [kabbalah ma'asis] — for he spent most of the day slaughtering birds for his livelihood — and from Uman to Breslov was a considerable distance. Our master z"l answered him: No — with me one must travel in wagons and on horses [mit veglen un mit ferd]. And he asked our master z"l whether he could travel to him for Rosh HaShanah through practical kabbalah [kabbalah ma'asis] — for he spent most of the day slaughtering birds for his livelihood — and from Uman to Breslov was about a hundred versts. Our master z"l answered him: No. With me one must travel in wagons [mit veglen un mit ferd].

When our master z"l was sitting in Breslov — R. Abba the shochet of Tsherin and his son Rabbi Shmuel traveled to him for Rosh HaShanah of the year 5570 [1809/1810]. And Rosh HaShanah fell on the second and third days. They came for Shabbos before Rosh HaShanah to Uman. And on Motza'ei Shabbos — Erev Rosh HaShanah — there fell a great rain — to the extent that there was no natural way to come to Breslov. And they had great suffering from this. And a wagoner came and said he would bring them — but demanded a large sum which they did not have. They were compelled to sell their belongings to pay the wagoner. [And they had a gold cup to bring as a gift to our master z"l — and were compelled to sell it. And our master z"l said: he would take from the prosecuting angel his teeth and eyes in exchange for the cup.] And they traveled and came to Breslov on Erev Rosh HaShanah toward evening. And they immediately received Shalom from the Admo"r z"l before mincha. And afterwards that night at the meal — the Admo"r z"l said to R. Abba in this language: Mit vos zol ikh dir op danken far di nesiyah? Oyf der velt iz nit keday — un dir Shmuel — na dir di yokh! [With what shall I thank you for the journey? In this world it is not worthwhile — and you Shmuel — here — take the soup!]
