חצות לילה אקום להודות לך על משפטי צדקך (תהלים קי"ט). חצות הוא מסגל כמו פדיון, כי הוא המתקת הדינים. כי צדק דינא, ומשפט רחמי (פתח אליהו). וזהו, על משפטי צדקך, הינו שצדק גובר על משפט. התקון לזה, חצות לילה אקום: ועקר חצות הוא תמיד אחר ששה שעות מתחלת הלילה הן בקיץ והן בחרף, ואז מתחיל זמן חצות. ונמשך עד גמר אשמורה שניה, דהינו שתי שעות: ובבקר טוב להסתכל על השמים, ועל ידי זה נמשך הדעת (עין בזהר הקדוש. פרשת בשלח נ"ז):

“At midnight I rise to thank You for Your righteous judgments” [Psalms 119:62]. Midnight is a propitious time, like a redemption, for it is the time of the sweetening of judgments [Petach Eliyahu,

Tikunei

Zohar]. And this is the meaning of “for Your righteous judgments”—that righteousness overpowers judgment.

The essential halachic midnight is always after six hours from the beginning of the night—whether in summer or winter. From that point, the period of midnight begins and lasts until the end of the second watch, which is two hours [Zohar].
