 Alef — The Letter Alef
 א

ALEF — Numerical Value: 1 | 114 source entries

[Translator's Note] The entries begin with the letter Alef itself — its shape, hidden form, and components — then proceed alphabetically through all Hebrew words beginning with Alef. Every entry records a mystical connection taught by Rebbe Nachman. Hebrew is always shown alongside the English. Cross-references (where the same connection appears listed from both directions) are presented as single unified entries.

 א

 Shape / Form

The letter Alef (א) embodies three components: an upper point, a lower point, and a Vov (ו) between them. In this way the Alef carries the visual form of the letters ר׳י׳ו׳ — Reish-Yud-Vov — whose numerical value is 216.
[The two Yuds (upper and lower strokes) plus the diagonal Vov are the three visible strokes composing the Alef. The number 216 = Gevurah / strength — revealing that the silent Alef carries tremendous hidden power.]

The letters of Adam are: א׳לף (Alef — the divine soul-breath) and דם (dam — blood, the body). Man is the union of the divine and the physical.

 Likutay Mooharan 6:5

 א׳ד׳ם׳

 Multiple

Each letter of Adam corresponds to a spiritual dimension: Alef (א) corresponds to Chochmah (Wisdom); Dalet (ד) alludes to the four elements; Mem (מ) corresponds to the aspect of ta'anis (fasting / self-restraint).

Adam (= 45) = the Divine Name מ"ה [the full-spelling יוד הא ואו הא = 45], known as the Name of milui Alfin.

 Adam (= 45) = three times Yud-Heh (15 × 3 = 45).

Likutay Mooharan 37:6

 א

 Shape / Form

The letter Alef consists of two Yuds (ב׳ יודין) with a Vov (ואו) between them.
[Yud(10) + Vov(6) + Yud(10) = 26 = the numerical value of the four-letter Name of G-d, יהוה. The silent Alef secretly contains the holiest of Names.]

 אדני

 Gematria

The Divine Name Adonai (אדני = 65) equals the gematria of היכל (Haichal, "Sanctuary / Palace" = 65), and also equals ס"ה (65).

 Adonai five times (5 × 65 = 325) = gematria of נערה (na'arah, "a young woman" = 325).

אָדָם אוֹתִיּוֹת אָלֶף דָּם. [שָׁם] אֹמֶר רָאשֵׁי תֵבוֹת אוֹר מַיִם רָקִיעַ. [ליקו"מ ל"ז]

</div>

The letter Alef has the shape of the letters יוד ואו דלת — Yud, Vov, Dalet — which is the full spelling of the letter Yud itself (יוד = Yud-Vov-Dalet, gematria 20). The Alef's form is thus the full-spelled Yud.
[The full spelling יוד = 10+6+4 = 20; but the source cites this in the context of lesson 185, which works with higher gematria values.]

 Likutay Mooharan 185

 א"ב

 Notarikon

The Aleph-Beis (Hebrew alphabet) contains six Pehs (ששה פאין) — six letters whose names cannot be pronounced without the letter Peh: א, כ, ך, פ, ף, ק — Alef, Kaf, final-Kaf, Peh, final-Peh, Kuf.
[The gematria of Peh (80) × 6 = 480, which equals the gematria of לילית. This connection is developed in the source lesson.]

 Likutay Mooharan 83

 אבות

 Multiple

Adonai embodies the aspect of ריו דין — for ר׳י׳ו׳ (= 216) is the visual form of the letter Alef, which becomes transformed into אדני.

 Roshay Saveivos

א׳דני ש׳פתי ת׳פתח — "My L-rd, open my lips" [Psalms 51:17, opening of the Shmoneh Esrai] — first letters spell אשת (eshes, "woman").

 Likutay Mooharan 55:7; 194; 38:2; 32; 37:6; 10:4; Sichos HaRan 96, 105

 אהבה

 Gematria

Ahavah (אהבה, "love" = 13) = gematria of Echad (אחד, "one" = 13). Love and unity are numerically — and spiritually — one.

Ahavah also equals the gematria of וָהֵב [Numbers 21:14 — a place-name associated with the giving of Torah; see Rashi].

The Patriarchs (אבות, Avos) correspond to the Divine Name שדי (Sha-dai): the three Patriarchs correspond to the letter ש (Shin, with its three prongs); and the acronym of י׳י א׳לקינו י׳י — "Hashem our G-d, Hashem" — which consists of 14 letters, is itself the acronym of א׳ברהם י׳צחק י׳עקב — Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov — thus forming ש-די.

 Likutay Mooharan 42

 אביב

 Notarikon

Aviv (אביב, "spring") is understood as: אלף עם בית, יוד עם בית — "Alef together with Beis; Yud together with Beis" — the letters immediately before and after Beis (the first letter of the Torah).
[The month of Aviv / Nisan, month of the Exodus, is revealed through its relationship to Beis — the first letter of Torah.]

 Likutay Mooharan 49:4

 אבן

 Notarikon

Even (אבן, "stone") — its Aramaic translation is אב ובן: "father and son."
[The stone embodies the relationship between the Supernal Father (Abba, Chochmah) and Son (Ben, Ze'ir Anpin) — kabbalistic levels of the Divine.]

 אהיה

 Gematria

The Divine Name Ehyeh (אהיה, "I Shall Be") spelled out in full as אלף קי יוד קי totals the Name קס"א (= 161, the full-spelling of Ehyeh with Yuds).

 Likutay Mooharan 6:7

 Likutay Mooharan 18:6

 אברהם

 Gematria

Avraham (אברהם) = 248 (רמ"ח) — the number of positive commandments and the number of limbs in the human body.

 Likutay Mooharan II:26

The letters Alef, Zayin, Ches (א, ז, ח = 1+7+8 = 16) equal the gematria of the letter Dalet [Dalet spelled out in full].
[The source in Chayay Mooharan explains this cryptic gematria and its practical implication.]

 Chayay Mooharan §85

 Gematria

Echad (אחד, "one" = 13) = gematria of Ahavah (אהבה, "love" = 13). [Cross-reference from Ahavah above.]

 Sofay Saveivos

The final letters of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov — ם, ק, ב — spell בקם (bekom, "in their arising / standing up").
[Bekom alludes to resurrection and the rising of the Patriarchs' merits on behalf of their descendants.]

 Likutay Mooharan 42; 57:3

 אברהם

 Notarikon

 אל

 Gematria

The Divine Name El (אל), spelled out in full twice (אלף למד × 2), equals the gematria of קרע (kara, "tearing [of the heavenly decree]").

 Likutay Mooharan 21:9

 אל אלקים

 Gematria

The Names El Elokim (אל אלקים), spelled out in full as אלף למד — אלף למד הי יוד מם, have the gematria of תהלים (Tehillim, "Psalms" = 485).

The verse "El, Elokim, Hashem spoke" (אל אלקים ה׳ דבר) [Psalms 50:1] — these four words together have the gematria of שמחה (simchah, "joy").
[The gematria of G-d's Names equals Tehillim — Psalms — linking the Names of G-d with prayer. And the opening of Psalm 50, calling all three of G-d's Names, sums to joy.]

Avraham (אברהם) is an expression of אבוא רם — "I shall bring [that which is] exalted" or "the exalted one shall come."

 Likutay Mooharan 87

 אדם

 Notarikon

Adam (אדם, "man") cannot be pronounced without the letter Alef — for the name of Alef begins with Alef, yet Alef itself is silent. Man exists only because of the silent divine breath that animates him.

The letters of Adam in their natural order are א, ד, ם — no rearrangement needed — showing that Man is constituted exactly as he is.
[These are two distinct teachings from the same source: one about the Alef's silence within the word Adam; the second noting that the letters need no permutation — Adam is complete as written.]

 Likutay Mooharan II:82

 Roshay Saveivos

Ani (אני, "I") — first letters of א׳נא נ׳פשי י׳הבית: "I hereby give over my very soul" [opening of the hymn Ana BeKoach]. The deepest meaning of "I" is total self-surrender to G-d.

Anochi (אנכי, "I" — the more emphatic form, the first word of the Ten Commandments) — first letters of א׳נא נ׳פשי כ׳תיבת י׳הבית: "I hereby give over my soul in writing."
[Ani and Anochi are distinct Hebrew words both meaning "I," but Anochi has the additional letter Kaf — hence its acronym includes the word kesivas ("in writing"), alluding to the written Torah given at Sinai. Tziroof

Af (אף, "nose / anger") — its letters reversed spell פ"א (Peh-Alef, the name of the letter Peh = "mouth"). Anger is the inversion of holy speech.
[When the mouth (peh) loses its sanctity, anger (af) fills its place — same letters, opposite direction.]

 [Translator's Summary — Section 1, Alef — 114 source entries fully covered]

This section contains the largest number of entries in the entire work, as expected for the first letter of the alphabet and the foundational letter of existence. Major themes: the silent Alef as the carrier of the Divine Name; man (Adam) as the union of divine breath and blood; the months of Iyar, Elul, and Tishrei hidden in biblical verses; the multiple faces of Elokim; truth (emes) as the beginning, middle, and end of the alphabet; and the paradox that the verse of perfect shelter contains the name of the adversary. Cross-references (entries appearing from both directions in the source) have been consolidated into unified entries to avoid redundancy.
