The Messiah will not come until all the arrogance in the world ceases. Segment 2 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה בָּא לִידֵי תַּאֲוַת מִשְׁכַּב־זָכָר, גַּם בָּא לִידֵי כַּעַס, גַּם לִפְעָמִים אֵין אִשָּׁה מִתְעַבֶּרֶת מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהִיא מְקַשֶּׁטֶת וְהִיא בַּעֲלַת־גַּאֲוָה. EN: 2. Through arrogance, one comes to homosexual desires, also one comes to anger. Also, sometimes a woman cannot conceive because she (overly) adorns herself and is arrogant. Segment 3 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה בָּא רָעָב לָעוֹלָם. EN: 3. Through arrogance, famine comes to the world. Segment 4 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה בָּא לְשִׁכְרוּת וְהוּא הַדִּין לְהֵפֶךְ. EN: 4. Through arrogance, one comes to drunkenness and vice-versa. Segment 5 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה בָּא לְפַחַד. EN: 5. Through arrogance, one comes to be frightened. Segment 6 HE: סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל גַּאֲוָה, לִתֵּן צְדָקָה. EN: 6. A segulah (auspicious) to annul arrogance, is to give charity. Segment 7 HE: מִי שֶׁנּוֹהֵג רַבָּנוּת בְּעַל־כָּרְחָם בְּגַאֲוָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ־ בָּרוּךְ־הוּא מְעוֹרֵר עָלָיו שׂוֹנְאִים. EN: 7. One who arrogantly imposes rabbinical authority, God arouses enemies against him. Segment 8 HE: מִי שֶׁלִּבּוֹ רָם עָלָיו, יֵדַע שֶׁהַשָּׁעָה מַצְלַחַת עָלָיו. EN: 8. One who experiences an uplifted heart, should know that the hour (time) is successful for him. Segment 9 HE: מִי שֶׁמּוֹשִׁיעַ לַעֲנִיִּים, יֵשׁ בּוֹ כֹּחַ בְּהִסְתַּכְּלוּת עַל בַּעֲלֵי־גַאֲוָה לְהַשְׁפִּיל אוֹתָם. EN: 9. One who saves poor people has power in his gaze on arrogant people to humble them. Segment 10 HE: מִי שֶׁהוֹלֵךְ בַּשּׁוּק וְנוֹפֵל, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁהוּא גַּדְלָן. EN: 10. One who walks in a public marketplace and falls, for certain he has a large ego. Segment 11 HE: סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל גַּאֲוָה, שֶׁיִּשְׁתַּתֵּף בְּצָרָתָן שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל. EN: 11. Conducive to overcoming arrogance: to take part in the suffering of the Jews . Segment 12 HE: עָנִי – שֶׁהָרָשָׁע רוֹדֵף אוֹתוֹ תֵּדַע שֶׁהֶעָנִי הוּא בַּעַל־גַּאֲוָה. EN: 12. A poor man who is pursued by a wicked man; know that the poor man is haughty. Segment 13 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה נוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָתוֹ. EN: 13. Pride causes a loss of faith. Segment 14 HE: עַל־יְדֵי גַּאֲוָה נִסְגָּר הַלֵּב וְעֵינֵי הָאָדָם מִלְּהַבִּיט בִּפְלָאוֹת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, לְיִרְאָה מִלְּפָנָיו. EN: 14. Pride blocks one’s heart and eyes from perceiving the Blessed God’s wonders and from experiencing awe before Him. Segment 15 HE: אֵין לְהִתְגָּאוֹת בְּהַשָּׂגוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת אוֹ בְּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים, כִּי הַכֹּל עַל־יְדֵי הַצַּדִּיק שֶׁבַּדּוֹר, וְהוּא אֵצֶל הַצַּדִּיק כְּעֵט אֵצֶל סוֹפֵר. EN: 15. One should not find cause to be haughty due to brilliant perceptions or good deeds, for it all comes by way of the tzadik of the generation and one is merely by the tzadik like a pen by a scribe. Segment 16 HE: אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה מֵבִיא לְגַאֲוָה. EN: 16. Eating and drinking bring to arrogance. Segment 17 HE: תִּקּוּן לְגַאֲוָה – שֶׁיִּתְעַנֶּה. EN: 17. A rectification for arrogance is that one should fast. Segment 18 HE: סְגֻלָּה לְגַאֲוָה – שֶׁיִּסְתַּכֵּל עַל הַשָּׁמַיִם. EN: 18. Conducive to (overcoming) arrogance; to look at the sky. Segment 19 HE: מַבְהִילִין אֶת הָאָדָם בַּחֲלוֹמוֹת, כְּדֵי לְהָסִיר מִמֶּנּוּ גַּאֲוָה שְׁקוּעָה, שֶׁהִיא מְכֻסָּה מִמֶּנּוּ, שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַכִּיר בָּהּ. EN: 19. A person is spooked by nightmares in order to remove embedded arrogance, which is concealed from him, which he doesn't discern. Segment 20 HE: כָּל הַמִּתְיַהֵר – חָכְמָתוֹ וּנְבוּאָתוֹ מִסְתַּלֶּקֶת. EN: 20. Anyone who is conceited; his wisdom and prophecy (possibly: intuition) depart. Segment 21 HE: דַּל גֵּאֶה – אֵין הַדַּעַת סוֹבְלוֹ. גַּם הוּא בְּעַצְמוֹ מִתְחָרֵט לְאַחַר זְמַן וְנִבְזֶה בְּעֵינֵי עַצְמוֹ. EN: 21. An arrogant pauper is unbearable (to the intellect). He, too, eventually has regret and is despised in his own eyes. Segment 22 HE: אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְגֵאֶה לְהַשְׁפִּיל דַּעְתּוֹ וּבָא לִידֵי שִׁכְחָה. EN: 22. An egotist [alternate text: someone beautiful] is unable to humble his self-regard and will come to forgetfulness. Segment 23 HE: יָהִיר – בַּעַל־מוּם הוּא. EN: 23. A conceited person is (considered physically) handicapped. Segment 24 HE: לְפִי צֹרֶךְ הָעִנְיָן יֵשׁ הֶתֵּר בַּדָּבָר לַעֲשׂוֹת דָּבָר, הַנִּרְאֶה כְּאִלּוּ מִתְגָּאֶה. EN: 24. Depending upon the necessity of the matter, it may be permissible to act in a way which appears arrogant. Segment 25 HE: כְּעוֹבֵד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה; וּכְאִלּוּ כּוֹפֵר בָּעִקָּר; וּכְאִלּוּ בָּא עַל עֲרָיוֹת כֻּלָּם; וּכְאִלּוּ בָּנָה בָּמָה; וּמִתְמַעֵט מֵחֲשִׁיבוּתוֹ וְאֵינֶנּוּ; וְרָאוּי לְגַדְּעוֹ כַּאֲשֵׁרָה; גַּם אֵין עֲפָרוֹ נִנְעֶרֶת; וּשְׁכִינָה מְיַלֶּלֶת עָלָיו. EN: 25. An arrogant person will eventually commit adultery. He is like an idolater, like one who denies the essentials of faith, like one who committed all forms of incest, and like one who built an alter for idolatry. His importance diminishes to nothing, he deserves to be chopped down like the idolatrous Asherah tree. His remains will not be stirred for the resurrection and the Shechinah wails over him. Segment 26 HE: הַכּוֹבַע שֶׁל צַדִּיק – סְגֻלָּה לְהָסִיר הַגַּאֲוָה. EN: 26. A Tzaddik’s hat is conducive to removing arrogance. Segment 27 HE: עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה יִהְיֶה לְךָ כֹּחַ לְשַׁבֵּר אֶת עַצְמְךָ מִגַּאֲוָה, וְתִמְשֹׁל עַל מִדַּת גַּאֲוָה. EN: 27. Through faith, you will be able to break yourself from pride, and rule over the vice of arrogance. Segment 28 HE: בַּעַל־גַּאֲוָה – מַחְשְׁבוֹתָיו אֵין מַצְלִיחִין. EN: 28. An arrogant person, his thoughts (plans) are unsuccessful. Segment 29 HE: כְּשֶׁנִּזְדַּמֵּן לְךָ עֲבֵרָה בְּלִי דַּעַת – בְּוַדַּאי יֵשׁ לְךָ גַּאֲוָה, וּבָזֶה מַרְאִין לְךָ, שֶׁעֲדַיִן אֵין אַתָּה צַדִּיק. EN: 29. When you happen upon a transgression without awareness, it is certain that you have arrogance, and through this (accidental sin, Heaven) is showing you that you are not yet a Tzaddik. Segment 30 HE: כְּשֶׁבָּא לְךָ אֵיזֶה גַּדְלוּת, תִּדְאַג מִפֻּרְעָנוּת. EN: 30. When any conceit comes to you, be concerned from calamity (befalling you). Segment 31 HE: עָנִי שֶׁהוּא שְׁפַל־רוּחַ, אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁאֵינוֹ נוֹתֵן צְדָקָה, הוּא טוֹב מֵעָשִׁיר בַּעַל־גַּאֲוָה, אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁנּוֹתֵן צְדָקָה. EN: 31. A poor man of humble spirit, even though he doesn't give charity, he is better than a prideful rich man, even though he gives charity. Segment 32 HE: כְּשֶׁנּוֹפֵל לְךָ גַּדְלוּת, תְּצַיֵּר לְפָנֶיךָ דְּמוּת אָבִיךָ. EN: 32. When pride falls upon you, visualize before you your father’s image. Segment 33 HE: גַּאֲוָה הוּא סִימָן עַל שֶׁבֶר, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם. EN: 33. Arrogance is a sign of (or for) downfall, God forbid. Segment 34 HE: גַּאֲוָה בָּא עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁלֹּא תִּקַּנְתָּ חַטַּאת נְעוּרִים. EN: 34. Arrogance is a result of your not having rectified the sins of youth. Segment 35 HE: מִי שֶׁיֵּינוֹ מַחְמִיץ, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁהוּא בַּעַל־גַּאֲוָה. EN: 35. One who's wine sours, it is certain that he is haughty. Segment 36 HE: מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ גַּאֲוָה, מְדוֹרוֹ אֵינוֹ מִתְקַיֵּם. EN: 36. One who is haughty, his dwelling place will not endure. Segment 37 HE: מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ גַּאֲוָה, אֵין אֲנִי וָהוּא יְכוֹלִין לָדוּר בָּעוֹלָם. EN: 37. One who has arrogance, I (God) and he cannot dwell (together) in the world. Even a slight breeze troubles him. His prayer goes unheeded. He does not have healing. He becomes impoverished in Torah, and his wife denigrates him. Segment 38 HE: וַאֲפִלּוּ רוּחַ קִמְעָא עוֹכַרְתּוֹ; וְאֵין תְּפִלָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת; וְאֵין לוֹ רְפוּאָה; וּבָא לִידֵי עֲנִיּוּת שֶׁל תּוֹרָה; וְאִשְׁתּוֹ מְבַזָּה אוֹתוֹ. EN: 38. One who dons the garb of a Torah scholar and he is not a Torah scholar, will not be brought into God’s partition. Segment 39 HE: מִי שֶׁמַּלְבִּישׁ אֶת עַצְמוֹ בְּמַלְבּוּשׁ שֶׁל תַּלְמִיד־חָכָם וְהוּא אֵינוֹ תַּלְמִיד־חָכָם, אֵין מַכְנִיסִין אוֹתוֹ בְּמְחִצָּתוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא. EN: 39. Pride holds back (the coming of) Messiah, and confounds a person from the world. Segment 40 HE: גַּאֲוָה מְעַכֶּבֶת אֶת מָשִׁיחַ וּמַטְרִיד אֶת הָאָדָם מִן הָעוֹלָם. EN: 40. The verse (Job 20:6): “If his height rises to the sky, and his head reaches the cloud(s) [he will be eternally destroyed like dung, those that look upon him will say, where is he?]”. And the verse (Proverbs 27:24): “For refuge is not forever, and is the crown (of wealth) lasting for generations?” are conducive to breaking haughtiness. Segment 41 HE: הַפָּסוּק: "אִם יַעֲלֶה לַשָּׁמַיִם שִׂיאוֹ" (איוב כ, ו) וְהַפָּסוּק – "כִּי לֹא לְעוֹלָם חֹסֶן" (משלי כז, כד), הֵם מְסֻגָּלִים לְשַׁבֵּר אֶת הַגַּאֲוָה. EN: 41. Has to be translated
