One who guards himself from anger, those who hate him have no dominion over him. Segment 2 HE: גַּם יִשְׁכֹּן בְּבֵיתוֹ, לֹא יָדוּרוּ אֲחֵרִים בִּמְקוֹמוֹ. EN: 2. Also, he will dwell in his house, and others will not lodge in his place. Segment 3 HE: עַל־יְדֵי הַכַּעַס נִתְבַּזֶה. EN: 3. Through anger, one is humiliated. Segment 4 HE: לֹא תִּרְתַּח וְלֹא תֶּחֱטָא. EN: 4. Do not lose your temper and you will not sin. Segment 5 HE: כָּל הַכּוֹעֵס – חָכְמָתוֹ וּנְבוּאָתוֹ מִסְתַּלֶקֶת, וַאֲפִלּוּ פּוֹסְקִין לוֹ גְּדֻלָּה מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם, מוֹרִידִין אוֹתוֹ מִגְּדֻלָּתוֹ. EN: 5. Anyone who becomes angry; his wisdom and prophetic ability departs. And even if greatness has been decreed for him in Heaven, he is brought down from his greatness. Segment 6 HE: הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא אוֹהֵב לְמִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ כּוֹעֵס וּלְמִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַעֲמִיד עַל מִדּוֹתָיו. EN: 6. The Holy One Blessed be He loves one who does not become angry and one who does not harbor resentment. Segment 7 HE: הָרַתְחָן – חַיָּיו אֵינָם חַיִּים. EN: 7. A hot-tempered person's life is not worth living. Segment 8 HE: גַּם כָּל מִינֵי גֵיהִנֹּם שׁוֹלְטוֹת בּוֹ. EN: 8. Also, all sorts of hell reign over (or afflict) him. Segment 9 HE: וְתַחְתּוֹנִיּוּת שׁוֹלֶטֶת בּוֹ. EN: 9. And is overcome with hemorrhoids (in the shape of figs). Segment 10 HE: שְׁכִינָה אֵינָהּ חֲשׁוּבָה כְּנֶגְדּוֹ. EN: 10. The Divine Presence is not important to him. Segment 11 HE: וּמְשַׁכֵּחַ תַּלְמוּדוֹ. EN: 11. And he forgets his learning. Segment 12 HE: וּמוֹסִיף טִפְּשׁוּת. EN: 12. And increases stupidity. Segment 13 HE: וּבְיָדוּעַ שֶׁעֲווֹנוֹתָיו מְרֻבִּים מִזְּכֻיּוֹתָיו. EN: 13. And it is certain that his sins are more than his merits. Segment 14 HE: כַּעַס אַחַר אֲכִילָה מַזִּיק מְאֹד. EN: 14. Anger after eating is very damaging. Segment 15 HE: כַּעַס שֶׁל אִשָּׁה מַחֲרִיב אֶת הַבַּיִת. EN: 15. The anger of a woman destroys the house. Segment 16 HE: עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס בְּשָׂרוֹ נִכְחָשׁ. EN: 16. Through anger one's flesh becomes emaciated. Segment 17 HE: סְגֻלָּה לְכַעַס שֶׁיֹּאכַל פַּת שַׁחֲרִית. EN: 17. It is conducive for [avoiding (or possibly: calming)] anger, to eat bread in the morning. Segment 18 HE: אָדָם שֶׁאֵין מִתְלוֹנֵן עַל הַבְּרִיּוֹת, יֵהֵא יָקָר בְּעֵינֵי הַבְּרִיּוֹת. EN: 18. One who does not complain about people will be esteemed in peoples' eyes. Segment 19 HE: עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁקֶר בָּא כַּעַס. EN: 19. Through falsehood comes anger. Segment 20 HE: מִי שֶׁהוּא כַּעֲסָן, יִדֹּר נֶדֶר וִישַׁלֵּם תֵּכֶף, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה יְבֻטַּל מִמֶּנּוּ הַכַּעַס. EN: 20. One with a bad temper should make a pledge and pay it immediately. Through this the anger will be annulled from him. Segment 21 HE: מִי שֶׁמִּסְתַּכֵּל בִּפְנֵי שַׁקְרָן, בָּא לִידֵי כַּעַס. EN: 21. One who gazes at the face of a liar comes to anger. Segment 22 HE: עַל־יְדֵי קִנְאָה בָּא לְכַעַס. EN: 22. Through jealousy one comes to anger. Segment 23 HE: עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס מְגָרֶה עַל עַצְמוֹ דִּינִים. EN: 23. Through anger one incites upon oneself harsh judgments. Segment 24 HE: עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס מוֹלִיד בָּנִים שׁוֹטִים. EN: 24. Through anger one sires foolish children. Segment 25 HE: עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס נִתְקַצְרוּ יָמָיו. EN: 25. Through anger, one's lifespan is shortened. Segment 26 HE: סְגֻלָּה לְכַעַס – שֶׁתַּשְׁפִּיל גֵּאִים. EN: 26. It is conducive to (dispelling or preventing) anger, that you lower the haughty. Segment 27 HE: כְּשֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה לְךָ כַּעַס, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה תּוּכַל בְּהִסְתַּכְּלוּתְךָ לְהַכְנִיעַ בַּעֲלֵי־גַּאֲוָה. EN: 27. When you don't have anger, through this you will be able, with your gaze, to humble the arrogant. Segment 28 HE: מִי שֶׁהוּא כַּעֲסָן, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁהוּא אוֹהֵב כָּבוֹד, וַאֲפִלּוּ כָּל הַמִּצְווֹת שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה, אֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבִיל כָּבוֹד. EN: 28. One who has a bad temper, it is certain that he loves honor, and even all the commandments (good deeds) he does, he only does for honor. Segment 29 HE: הַכּוֹעֵס עַל עָנִי מְכֻבָּד, כְּאִלּוּ הִקְנִיט אֶת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ. EN: 29. One who is angry at an honorable pauper, it is as if he taunted G-d. Segment 30 HE: גַּם נִתְאַלֵּם. EN: 30. Also, he becomes mute. Segment 31 HE: וְנַעֲשָׂה מְצֹרָע. EN: 31. And becomes a leper. Segment 32 HE: מִי שֶׁמְּשַׁבֵּר אֶת מִדַּת הַכַּעַס, יִזְכֶּה לְשֵׁם טוֹב. EN: 32. One who breaks the vice of anger will merit a good name. Segment 33 HE: לִפְעָמִים בָּא כַּעַס עַל־יְדֵי מַשָּׂא כְּבֵדָה. EN: 33. Sometimes anger comes through (bearing) a heavy burden. Segment 34 HE: עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס בָּא עַצְבוּת. EN: 34. Through anger comes depression. Segment 35 HE: כַּעַס בָּא עַל־יְדֵי הִתְבּוֹדְדוּת שֶׁאֵינוֹ כָּרָאוּי. EN: 35. Anger comes through hisbodidus (seclusion) not carried out appropriately. Segment 36 HE: עַל־יְדֵי הַקְפָּדָה אֵין שָׁלוֹם. EN: 36. Through choler, there is no peace. Segment 37 HE: עַל־יְדֵי אֲכִילָה נִסְתַּלֵּק הַכַּעַס. EN: 37. Through eating, anger departs. Segment 38 HE: תִּשְׁמֹר אֶת עַצְמְךָ מִכַּעַס, בְּיוֹם שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה לְךָ יְשׁוּעָה. EN: 38. Guard yourself from anger on a day in which you had a salvation. Segment 39 HE: עַל־יְדֵי צְדָקָה נִתְבַּטֵּל הַכַּעַס. EN: 39. Through (giving) charity, anger is annulled. Segment 40 HE: עַל־יְדֵי הַכַּעַס אִשָּׁה מְקַשָּׁה לֵילֵד. EN: 40. Through anger, a woman has difficulty in childbirth (or having children). Segment 41 HE: הַכַּעַס מַפְחִיד אֶת הָאָדָם. EN: 41. Anger frightens a person. Segment 42 HE: הַכַּעַס מַזִּיק לְהָרְאוּת. EN: 42. Anger damages eyesight.
