## Segment 1

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁלֹּא תִּקֵּן חַטַּאת נְעוּרִים, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּאִים לוֹ דְּאָגוֹת.

1. One who has not rectified the sins of his youth, through this worries come upon him.


## Segment 2

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

לָרֹב בָּא הַצַּעַר לָאָדָם עַל־יְדֵי דִּבּוּרוֹ.

</div>

2. For the most part, suffering comes to a man through his speech.


## Segment 3

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ צַעַר, תְּדַבֵּר מִזֶּה הַצַּעַר.

</div>

3. When you are suffering, speak about this suffering.


## Segment 4

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי דְּאָגָה בַּלֵּב נוֹפֵל עַל הָאָדָם אֵימַת מָוֶת.

</div>

4. Through worries of the heart, there falls upon the person fear of death.


## Segment 5

עַל־יְדֵי הַכְנָעָה נִתְבַּטֵּל רָעָה וְיָגוֹן.

</div>

5. Through submission, evil and sorrow are annulled.


## Segment 6

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עַצְבוּת, יִסְתַּכֵּל עַל הַצַּדִּיקִים, וְיָבֹא לוֹ שִׂמְחָה בְּלִבּוֹ.

6. One who is depressed should gaze upon the Tzaddikim, and joy will come to his heart.


## Segment 7

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁאַתָּה נִכְנָס בְּבֵית נָכְרִי, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּא עַצְבוּת.

7. When you enter the house of a non-Jew, through this depression comes [upon you].


## Segment 8

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת אָדָם נֶחֱלָשׁ.

</div>

8. Through depression one becomes weakened.


## Segment 9

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי לֵב רָע הַפָּנִים נִשְׁתַּנֶּה.

</div>

9. Through an evil heart, one's face is transformed.


## Segment 10

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ צַעַר בְּיוֹם שִׂמְחָה, וְכָל שִׂמְחָתְךָ נִשְׁבָּת, תֵּדַע שֶׁתַּמָּה זְכוּת אֲבוֹתֶיךָ.

10. When you have anguish on a day of joy, and all your happiness is dispelled, know that your ancestral merit has been exhausted.


## Segment 11

מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עַצְבוּת, יִתֵּן מַתָּנָה לַצַּדִּיק תָּדִיר.

11. One who is depressed should continually give a gift to a Tzaddik.


## Segment 12

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת בָּא שְׂרֵפָה.

</div>

12. Through depression come fires (burnings).


## Segment 13

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַצְבוּת סִימָן לְאֵיזֶה חֹלָאַת, שֶׁמְּמַשְׁמֵשׁ לָבוֹא.

</div>

13. Depression is a sign that some disease is about to manifest.


## Segment 14

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא אֵין עִמּוֹ.

14. Due to depression, the Holy One, Blessed be He, is not with him.


## Segment 15

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת רוֹאֶה קֶרִי.

</div>

15. Through depression, one has (lit. sees) a wanton seminal emission.


## Segment 16

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַצְבוּת בָּא עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס.

</div>

16. Depression comes through anger.


## Segment 17

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת אֵינוֹ מַשִּׂיג תּוֹחַלְתּוֹ.

</div>

17. Through depression, a person does not reach his aspiration.


## Segment 18

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת נִתְבַּזֶּה.

</div>

18. Due to depression, one is degraded.


## Segment 19

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי בְּכִיָּה אֵין אָדָם יָכוֹל לֶאֱכֹל.

</div>

19. Due to weeping, a person is unable to eat.


## Segment 20

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ עַצְבוּת וְהוּא תָּמִיד בְּשִׂמְחָה, בְּוַדַּאי יִתְנַשֵּׂא.

20. One who is not depressed, but is always joyful, will certainly be raised up.


## Segment 21

עַל־יְדֵי עַצְבוּת בָּא בִּזָּיוֹן.

</div>

21. Through depression comes degradation.


## Segment 22

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

בְּכִיָּה הוּא סִימָן טוֹב לְחוֹלֶה.

</div>

22. Crying is a positive sign for a sick person.


## Segment 23

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי יָגוֹן אוֹיְבָיו נִתְרוֹמְמִים.

</div>

23. Through anguish, one's enemies are highly elevated.


## Segment 24

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי יָגוֹן בָּא כְּאֵב לֵב.

</div>

24. Through anguish comes heart pain.


## Segment 25

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁהוּא מָהִיר, הוּא עַצְבָן.

</div>

25. One who is hasty is gloomy (sad/annoyed/irritated).


## Segment 26

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

קִרְבַת הַצַּדִּיקִים מְשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת הַלֵּב.

</div>

26. Drawing close to Tzaddikim makes the heart joyous .


## Segment 27

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

סְגֻלָּה לְהָסִיר עַצְבוּת, שֶׁיִּשְׁמַע אֶת צַדִּיק נִכְבָּד, כְּשֶׁהוּא מְזַמֵּר.

27. A segulah for removing depression is to listen to an honored Tzaddik when he sings.


## Segment 28

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁאֵין מִתְוַדֶּה עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו, אֲנָחָה וּדְאָגוֹת בָּאִים עָלָיו.

28. One who does not confess his sins has sighing and worries come upon him.


## Segment 29

כְּשֶׁאָדָם מִתְאַוֶּה לִדְבָרִים שֶׁהֵם נֶגְדִּיִּים לַקָּדוֹשׁ־ בָּרוּךְ־הוּא, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּא לוֹ אֲנָחָה.

29. When a person lusts after things that are against [the Will of] the Holy One, Blessed be He, through this anguish (sighing) comes upon him.


## Segment 30

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

הָעֶצֶב עַל חֲלוֹם רָע מְבַטֵּל אֶת הַחֲלוֹם, שֶּׁלֹּא יִתְקַיֵּם.

30. Sadness due to a bad dream annuls [the influence of] the dream, preventing it from coming to pass.


## Segment 31

קוֹל וּמַרְאֶה וְרֵיחַ מְשִׁיבִין דַּעְתּוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם.

31. Voice, appearance, and scent restore a person's wellbeing (lit. knowledge/awareness).


## Segment 32

עַל־יְדֵי הַצְּעָקָה נִתְבַּטֵּל הַצַּעַר.

</div>

32. Through screaming, one's pain is annulled.


## Segment 33

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עַצְבוּת, מֵבִיא עַל עַצְמוֹ יִסּוּרִין.

</div>

33. One who is depressed brings suffering upon himself.


## Segment 34

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כָּל הַנִּמְשָׁךְ אַחַר צַעֲרוֹ יוֹתֵר מִדַּי, הַצַּעַר נִמְשָׁךְ אַחֲרָיו.

34. One who draws too far after his own suffering, suffering draws towards him.


## Segment 35

תְּמָרִים מְבַטְּלִין דְּאָגָה.

</div>

35. Dates annul worry.


## Segment 36

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

אַגָּדָה מְשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת הָאָדָם.

</div>

36. Aggadah (Talmudic legends) brings joy to a man.


## Segment 37

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַצְבוּת שֶׁבְּלֵב הָאָדָם, כְּשֶׁמַּרְגִּישׁ בְּרָעָתוֹ, כִּי הַלֵּב הוּא הַמֵּסֵב לְכָל זֶה; כִּי הַלֵּב הוּא הַגּוֹרֵם לְכָל דָּבָר הֵן לְטוֹב הֵן לְהֵפֶךְ.

</div>

1. Depression [fills] the heart of a man when he becomes aware of his own evil (bad fortune). For the heart causes all of this, because the heart is the cause of everything; for good or for bad (lit. the opposite).


## Segment 38

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

צָרִיךְ לִשְׁמֹר אֶת עַצְמוֹ מֵעַצְבוּת, כְּדֵי שֶּׁלֹּא יָבוֹא, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, לִידֵי אֲבֵלוּת.

2. One must guard himself from depression in order that he not come to mourning, G-d forbid.


## Segment 39

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי הַצַּעַר וְהָעַצְבוּת בָּא מְרִיבָה בָּעוֹלָם, וְעַל־יְדֵי הַשִּׂמְחָה בָּא שָׁלוֹם בָּעוֹלָם.

3. Through suffering and sadness, conflict comes into the world. Conversely, through joy, peace comes to the world.


## Segment 40

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי קִלְקוּל הַשִּׂמְחָה בָּא חֳלָאִים עָלָיו.

4. Through the spoiling of one's joy, sicknesses come upon him.


## Segment 41

סְגֻלָּה לְהָסִיר הָעַצְבוּת עַל־יְדֵי הָרַחֲמָנוּת.

</div>

5. It is a segulah to remove depression through mercy.


## Segment 42

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

הַנְּדָרִים וְהַנְּדָבוֹת מְבִיאִין שִׂמְחָה.

</div>

6. Vows and pledges bring happiness.
