## Segment 1

בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁבָּא פַּחַד עַל רָשָׁע, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁבְּזֶה הַשָּׁעָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא נוֹתֵן לַצַּדִּיק תַּאֲוָתוֹ.

1. At the time that an evildoer becomes afraid, it is certain that, at this time, the Holy One Blessed be He grants the Tzadik his desire.


## Segment 2

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי פַּחַד בָּא מִכְשׁוֹל.

</div>

2. Through fear comes stumbling.


## Segment 3

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן תִּנָּצֵל מִפַּחַד.

</div>

3. Through trust [in G-d], you will be saved from fear.


## Segment 4

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד, לִזְכֹּר אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ.

4. A segulah (effective way) to nullify fear is to remember our father Avraham.


## Segment 5

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

בִּצְדָקָה תְּבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד.

</div>

5. With charity, you will nullify fear.


## Segment 6

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד, שֶׁתֹּאמַר ה' צְבָאוֹת.

6. An effective way to nullify fear is to say "Hashem Tzva-os" (t.n. This is probably a reference to the verses in Psalms 46:8, 84:13 which begin with these words. These verses are found together throughout the prayers and are known for their saving powers – see Jerusalem Talmud, Tractate Brachos 5:1).

עַל־יְדֵי הַפַּחַד נִתְבַּטֵּל הַגַּאֲוָה.

7. Through fear, arrogance is nullified.


## Segment 8

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

פַּחַד מַכְחִישׁ כֹּחוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם.

8. Fear saps a person's strength.


## Segment 9

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

בַּר־דַּעַת אֵין לוֹ לְהִתְפַּחֵד מִפְּנֵי קוֹל בְּעָלְמָא.

</div>

9. An intelligent person has nothing to fear from a mere noise.


## Segment 10

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מָאן דְּמִבְעַת, אַף־עַל־גַּב דְּאִיהוּ לָא חָזֵי מַזָלֵהּ חָזֵי, וְתַקָּנָתוֹ, יְדַלֵּג מִדֻּכְתֵּהּ אַרְבַּע גַּרְמִידֵי אוֹ לִיקְרֵי קְרִיאַת־שְׁמַע אוֹ יֹאמַר עִזֵּי דְּבֵי טַבָּחָא שְׁמִינָא מִינָאִי.

10. Someone who becomes frightened, even though he does not see, his mazal (fortune) sees. To remedy this, he should jump from his place a distance of four cubits, or recite the Shema, or say, "the goats in the butcher shop are fatter than I".

מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ פְּחָדִים, יְזַמֵּר זֶמֶר שֶׁל שִׂמְחָה.

11. Someone who has fears should sing a song of joy.


## Segment 12

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁתְּצַיֵּר שֵׁם אֱלֹקִים לְנֶגֶד עֵינֶיךָ, יֵלְכוּ הַפְּחָדִים מִמְּךָ.

12. By picturing the name Elokim before your eyes, fears will leave you.


## Segment 13

מִי שֶׁאוֹכֵל מָמוֹן יִשְׂרָאֵל, פְּחָדִים בָּאִין עָלָיו.

</div>

13. Someone who consumes Jewish money, fears come to him.


## Segment 14

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִזְהָר בְּבִרְכַּת הַנֶּהֱנִין תְּחִלָּה וָסוֹף, פְּחָדִים בָּאִים עָלָיו.

14. Someone who is not careful with the blessings at the beginning and end [of eating], fears come to him.


## Segment 15

עַל־יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ פַּחַד.

</div>

15. Through trust in [G-d], you will not have fear.


## Segment 16

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

הוֹשַׁעְנוֹת חֲבוּטִים מְסֻגָּלִים לְבַטֵּל הַפַּחַד.

</div>

16. Willow branches beaten [on Hoshana Rabba] are conducive (a segula) to nullifying fear.


## Segment 17

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁשּׁוֹמֵעַ וְאָצִית לְדִין תּוֹרָה, נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד.

17. One who listens to and obeys a Torah courts decision (Torah law) will be saved from fear.


## Segment 18

שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וָעֶשֶׂר טְבִילוֹת מְבַטְּלִין הַפַּחַד. גַּם יִתֵּן מַתָּנָה לַצַּדִּיק.

18. Three hundred and ten immersions [in a mikveh - ritual bath] nullify fear. One should also give a gift to a Tzadik.


## Segment 19

עַל־יְדֵי אֱמֶת הָאָדָם נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד בַּלֵּילוֹת.

19. Through truth, a person is saved from fear at night.


## Segment 20

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי עֲנָוָה לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ פַּחַד.

</div>

20. Through humility, you will not have fear.


## Segment 21

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

בַּיִת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ פַּחַד, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ חֵלֶק לַסִּטְרָא־אַחֲרָא.

21. A house in which there is fear, it is certain that the Other Side has a portion in it.


## Segment 22

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ אֵיזֶה פַּחַד, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ בָּא שְׂרֵפָה, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁיִּתְבַּטֵל הַפַּחַד.

22. When there is some fear and, afterwards, a fire (burning) comes, it is certain that the fear will be annulled.


## Segment 23

פַּחַד בָּא עַל־יְדֵי חֲנֻפָּה.

</div>

23. Fear comes through adulation.


## Segment 24

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל בְּאַחְדוּת, הָאֻמּוֹת מִתְפַּחֲדִין מֵהֶם.

</div>

24. When Israel is united, the nations fear them.


## Segment 25

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁשּׁוֹכְחִים אֶת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְאֵינָם נִשְׁעָנִים עָלָיו, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה מִתְפַּחֲדִים מֵאֻמּוֹת.

25. When they forget Hashem, may He be Blessed, and do not rely on him, through this, they fear the nations.


## Segment 26

עַל־יְדֵי דְּאָגָה בָּא פַּחַד.

</div>

26. Through worry comes fear.


## Segment 27

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי פַּחַד בָּא כְּזָבִים.

</div>

27. Through fear comes lies.


## Segment 28

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

אוֹר הַנֵּר – סְגֻלָּה לְפַחַד.

</div>

28. The light of a candle is a remedy (segulah) for fear.


## Segment 29

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי הִתְפָּאֲרוּת בַּעֲשִׁירוּת בָּא פַּחַד.

</div>

29. Through boasting of wealth, comes fear.


## Segment 30

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

פַּחַד בָּא עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס.

</div>

30. Fear comes through anger.


## Segment 31

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי דְּאָגָה וָפַחַד נַעֲשָׂה הַלֵּב אָטוּם.

</div>

31. Through worry and fear, the heart becomes sealed (insensitive).


## Segment 32

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

עַל־יְדֵי לִמּוּד תּוֹרָה עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן בִּשְׁעַת סְעוּדָה נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד.

32. By learning Torah at the table at mealtime, one is saved from fear.


## Segment 33

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ פַּחַד, הוּא סִימָן שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא הִסְתִּיר פָּנִים מִמֶּנּוּ, וְסִימָן שֶׁדִּינִין שׁוֹרִין עָלָיו.

33. Someone who has fear - this is a sign that the Holy One, Blessed be He, hides His Face from him, and a sign that judgments rest on him.


## Segment 34

מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִתְוַדֶּה עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו, מוֹרָא בָּא עָלָיו.

34. One who does not confess his sins - fear comes to him.


## Segment 35

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁבָּא פַּחַד עַל אָדָם, יֵדַע שֶׁבָּא בֶּן גִּילוֹ לְאֵיזֶהוּ צָרָה.

1. When fear comes to a person, he should know that someone who shares his mazal (fortune) has come into some trouble.


## Segment 36

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

לִפְעָמִים אָדָם מִתְפַּחֵד קֹדֶם שֶׁבָּא עָלָיו אֵיזֶהוּ טוֹב.

2. Sometimes a person becomes afraid before some good comes to him.


## Segment 37

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

מִי שֶׁבּוֹרֵחַ מִן הַצָּרָה, הוּא פִּקֵּחַ.

</div>

3. Someone who flees from trouble is smart.


## Segment 38

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

בְּלַיְלָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ פַּחַד בִּשְׁעַת שֵׁנָה, אַל תֵּלֵךְ בַּדֶּרֶךְ בַּיּוֹם.

4. On a night that you have fear while sleeping, do not go on the road in the day.


## Segment 39

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

כְּשֶׁאָדָם נוֹטֶה לָמוּת, אֲפִלּוּ כְּשֶׁעֲדַיִן בְּקַו־הַבְּרִיאָה וְאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁדִּינוֹ לְמִיתָה, אַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן הוּא מִתְפַּחֵד וְאוֹמֵר בְּפִיו שֶׁיָּמוּת.

5. When a person is on the verge of death, even if he is still healthy and does not know of his death sentence, nonetheless, he becomes afraid and says verbally that he will die.
