(On the 17th of Tammuz Reb Yisroel ate before the prayer. When did you eat? Before dawn? After dawn?) It was already day — already the time of the prayer! (Now — since Reb Yisroel was accustomed to fasting from the age of six — the eve of Rosh Chodesh, Mondays and Thursdays — then you entered strong depression for five days?) Friday, Shabbos, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. And on Wednesday evening — the thought entered me to open the bookcase and open some book. I wept before H"Y that He should heal me, that He should take the depression from me. (But what did it look like? What did your depression look like?) Yes. I lay like a dead man! (Five days?) Yes. (And you did not pray?) I only prayed. (Without eating?) I did not eat, did not speak, and did not want to be seen by anyone — like a dead man! (How many days?) In the Yeshivah I was on Sunday, and at home I was Friday and Shabbos. I went to the Yeshivah Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday — those are two days — making six days! Yes.

So I prayed to H"Y and wept that He should heal me — that there should be no desecration of H"Y's Name. Then a firm thought entered me — like someone entering my head and saying to me: "Enter your room... enter your room and open the bookcase, and place your hand on whatever book it may be, and open it... and open it wherever you open it — and there you will find healing for your soul!" I did so — I entered the room, opened the bookcase, took out a book, opened the book — and there it was! The Petek. And I did not pay attention — I saw a piece of paper — I did not pay attention! רציתי... וקראתי — רק בהתורה, במקום שפתחתי. ובוודאי החייתי את נפשי... (איפה פתחת?) באורח חיים [ליקוטי הלכות] חלק א', דף כ"ה [בדפוס הראשון של "ליקוטי הלכות" של רבי נתן, הסדר אחר]. ואחר כך ראיתי שאין תקוה, שאין לי שום תקוה לרפואה — כי עשיתי כך וכך, עשיתי הכל ולא... ולא מצאתי. רק חתיכת נייר! לא היה כלום!... זה עזר לי — התורה עזר לי, על המקום. אבל תיכף כשגמרתי לקרוא — חזרתי למחלה! אז נתייאשתי. רציתי לקחת הספר ולסגור ולהחזירו למקום ולסגור הארון! טרם שחזרתי את הספר, טרם שסגרתי את הספר — הבחנתי וראיתי שיש שורות על הנייר! התחלתי לקרוא — ותיכף ראיתי מה שזה! שזה פלא כזה שלא היה מעולם! בכל מילה שקראתי — נכנס בי רפואה! חיות! שמחה! הכל! הרגשתי וראיתי פלאות כאלה שאי אפשר לספר! ומכל דיבור ודיבור היה נכנס לי שמחה כזו שאין בעולם!
I wanted... and I read — only the Torah teaching, at the place where I opened. And certainly I revived my soul... (Where did you open?) In Orach Chaim [Likutay Halachos] Part 1, page 25 [in the first printing of Likutay Halachos of Reb Noson, the order is different]. And afterwards I saw that there is no hope — that I have no hope for healing — because I had done this and that, I had done everything, and not... and not found anything. Only a piece of paper! Nothing was there!... This helped me — the Torah helped me, on the spot. But immediately when I finished reading — I returned to the illness! So I despaired. So I read and read until I finished this Petek — and I entered into such joy as was not of this world! I tasted a taste of the Garden of Eden that I had never experienced! I began to sing and dance — and everyone in the Yeshivah... the room was close to the Yeshivah, and everyone heard that I had become joyful! So they said: "Yisroel Ber? He is already... he is fine — completely fine? He — after such depression?! Such joy?! So he has already gone crazy for all his life's days! No hospital will help him, no medicine..."

He said: "The Torah is not in the heavens!"

The Rav of Berdichev — they came to the Rav of Berdichev: they were Shabbos desecrators, he could not accept them, he could not speak with them, there was no connection. If there had been no opposition against Rabbainu — Rabbainu would already have been revealed in the world! And what would have been would already have been... And the world fell into such darkness as we see.

I received from Reb Shlomo [Wexler] — I received and saw wonders from the words of Reb Shlomo — which he himself did not know... I saw our people — Reb Gedalia, Reb Gedalia Berger — our people...
