Chapter Twelve: The Honor of the Tzadik כְּבוֹד הַצַּדִּיק Source: https://ajew.org/reader/yisroel-saba/1/12 Segment 1 HE: הוּא אָמַר לָהֶם: "אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לִהְיוֹת בְּרֶסְלֵב.." EN: Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner and I were in Tzfas and suffered greatly. There was great danger from the opponents of Breslov who wanted to kill and destroy. They took a large knife and said: "We will slaughter all the Breslov Chassidim!" Segment 2 HE: בִּזְמַן שֶׁנִּתְקָרֵב רַב צְבִי רוֹזְנְטַל לְרַבֵּנוּ אָז הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ סִבֵּב שֶׁכָּכָה הָיָה הַשְׁגָּחָה, הוּא יָצָא מִבֵּיתוֹ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וָתִיקִין בְּיוֹם שִׁשִׁי וְלֹא חָזַר כָּל הַיּוֹם. הוּא רָאָה שֶׁהוּא בְּסַכָּנָה, אָז הוּא לָקַח אֶת הַטַּלִּית וְהַתְּפִלִּין וְהָלַךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל, אַחֲרֵי הַתְּפִלָּה הוּא הָיָה רָגִיל לָבוֹא חֲזָרָה הַבַּיְתָה, לֶאֱכֹל, לִשְׁתּוֹת, אָז הַפַּעַם הוּא לֹא חָזַר הַבַּיְתָה. EN: Blessed be Hashem — Hashem saved us from the hand of the gentiles, from the Jews, and we remained alive. Rabbi Yisroel and I — every single day we had different miracles. We lived through miracles, not through the natural order. It is a miracle that I am alive; it is a miracle that I am sitting here… Segment 3 HE: נוּ, כָּל הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה הָיוּ מְחַכִּים בְּכָל רֶגַע, "עַתָּה יָבוֹא, עַתָּה יָבוֹא. אֵיךְ אֶפְשָׁר, הוֹלְכִים לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וְלֹא חוֹזְרִים?" הוּא הִשְׁאִיר אֶת חוֹתְנוֹ וְאֶת אִשְׁתּוֹ וְגַם-כֵּן הָיָה לוֹ יְלָדִים קְטַנִּים, וְהוּא הָלַךְ לִירוּשָׁלַיִם... EN: My father-in-law wanted to kill me and Rabbi Yisroel for our becoming Breslovers. He intended to slaughter Rabbi Yisroel. Segment 4 HE: הַכְּלָל, בָּאוּ כָּל הָעִיר אֵלַי שֶׁאֲנִי אֲסַפֵּר לָהֶם אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי. אֲנִי אַגִּיד שֶׁהוּא הָלַךְ לִירוּשָׁלַיִם? אָז אָמַרְתִּי: "אֵינֶנִּי יוֹדֵעַ". EN: The gentiles — murderers of Israel. And my father-in-law had two Arab friends. They bought animals together and he had a connection with them — and they were capable of killing many Jews. Rabbi Yisroel always walked by day and by night through the fields in hisbodidus toward Rabbi Shimon in Meron. My father-in-law told him that he would kill him. My father-in-law gave the Arabs money and told them to kill Rabbi Yisroel — they would find him on the road and kill him and no one would know of it. I am not saying this without cause. But the gentiles were afraid — they were unable to do anything to him, and he was saved. Segment 5 HE: שׁוֹאֲלִים בְּהַמִּשְׁטָרָה: "אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי?" וְהַמִּשְׁטָרָה לֹא יוֹדְעִים. אִשְׁתּוֹ חִפְּשָׂה בְּכָל הַבָּתֵּי-כְּנֶסֶת וְהוּא אֵינֶנּוּ, בָּאָה הַשַּׁבָּת וְהוּא אֵינֶנּוּ... EN: Once, Rabbi Yisroel entered some house and my father-in-law was there, sitting on a heavy iron chair. Rabbi Yisroel entered the house, and my father-in-law rose and took the chair — he was strong; he wanted to bring the iron chair down on Rabbi Yisroel's head. But Hashem had mercy and there was a miracle: the owner of the house managed to seize the chair, and Rabbi Yisroel remained alive. The owner of the house did not want it — he said: "Not in my house." And he held the chair back so that my father-in-law should not strike Rabbi Yisroel. But my father-in-law struck Rabbi Yisroel to force him to leave me. He said he would kill him if I did not leave his daughter: "He who rises to kill you — rise earlier to kill him. You are killing my daughter — I will kill you!" Segment 6 HE: נוּ, נוּ.. הָיָה רַעַשׁ בְּכָל הָעִיר, "רַב צְבִי רוֹזְנְטַל הָלַךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וְלֹא חָזַר, מַה שֶּׁעוֹשִׂים הַבְּרֶסְלֶבִים. בְּיוֹם שִׁשִׁי עֶרֶב שַׁבָּת לָקְחוּ אֶת רַב צְבִי, יֵשׁ לוֹ אִשָּׁה וִילָדִים קְטַנִּים, וְהוּא נֶעֱלַם. מִי יוֹדֵעַ אֵיפֹה הוּא". EN: Rabbi Yisroel was in great danger. My father-in-law grabbed Rabbi Yisroel by the beard — he did not want to let go of the beard — and he tore out half his beard. This caused Rabbi Yisroel very great pain. But upon my father-in-law fell a terrible punishment — that very instant he passed away! Segment 7 HE: כַּמָּה אֲנָשִׁים אָמְרוּ שֶׁהַבְּרֶסְלֵבִים שָׁלְחוּ אוֹתוֹ לְאוּמַן, כִּי עִיקָּר אֶצְלָם אוּמַן, "הוּא כְּבָר חֲסִיד בְּרֶסְלֵב", אֲחָדִים אָמְרוּ: "אוּלַי הוּא בִּצְפָת, אוּלַי בִּירוּשָׁלַיִם". עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים לֹא יָדְעוּ הֵיכָן הוּא, אֲבָל זֶה יָדוּעַ - שֶׁרַב הִירְשׁ נֶאֱבַד נֶעֱלַם וְאֵינֶנּוּ. EN: I was with my father-in-law — he had been suffering. On Wednesday or Thursday he tore Rabbi Yisroel's beard. On Thursday evening and the night of Friday he became ill and said he was not feeling well. And on holy Shabbos morning he breathed his last and passed away. I remember his funeral on Motza'ai Shabbos [the night after Shabbos]. His wife remained a young widow with ten children — large and small. Blessed be Hashem, I helped them with whatever was possible. He died and left orphans… Segment 8 HE: הֵם שָׁלְחוּ עֶרֶב שַׁבָּת שֶׁהוּא יוֹם שִׁשִּׁי סָמוּךְ לְהַדְלָקַת נֵרוֹת, גִּבּוֹר אֶחָד מִגִּבּוֹרֵי טְבֶרְיָה שֶׁיּוֹדֵעַ לִרְכֹּב עַל סוּס כְּמוֹ אֲוִירוֹן, הוּא נָסַע לִצְפָת, יֵשׁ לְרַב צְבִי מִשְׁפָּחָה שָׁמָּה, אָז הֵם חָשְׁבוּ שֶׁאוּלַי בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁהָיָה מַחֲלֹקֶת בַּבַּיִת אָז הוּא הָלַךְ לִצְפָת. הֵם שָׁלְחוּ אֶת הַגִּבּוֹר לִצְפָת וְהוּא נָסַע וְהִסְפִּיק לַחֲזֹר לִטְבֶרְיָה וּלְהוֹדִיעַ שֶׁהוּא בִּקֵּר בְּכָל הָאֵזוֹר וְאֵצֶל הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה, וְרַב צְבִי אֵינֶנּוּ... EN: And this… I saw it — the man died and left ten small orphans, and they worked for nothing by the wealthy. Small children suffered without end on account of their father who had humiliated Rabbi Yisroel. He suffered — he and the children and the orphans — the entire family suffered from this. What they suffered — who can estimate… Segment 9 HE: נוּ, נוּ.. הָיָה כָּל הָעִיר רַעַשׁ כָּזֶה, "הַבְּרֶסְלֵבִים, הַבְּרֶסְלֶבִים שֶׁלָּקְחוּ אֶת רַב הִירְשׁ מֵהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה בְּיוֹם שִׁשִׁי, הוּא הָלַךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וְאֵינֶנּוּ". עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים הֵם הִדְלִיקוּ נֵרוֹת לִכְבוֹד שַׁבָּת וְרַב צְבִי אֵינֶנּוּ, אֵינֶנּוּ וְאֵינֶנּוּ. הָיָה בּוֹכִים הַיְלָדִים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה, "אֵיזֶה שַׁבָּת זֶה, אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי?" EN: He did not know that it was so severe. He was a great opponent of Breslov and he humiliated and caused great pain to Rabbi Yisroel — so he suffered great troubles because of it. I saw the end of my father-in-law. And this damaged the entire building, all the houses — Rachmana litzlan [may the Merciful One protect us] — such curses… Segment 10 HE: וְאִשְׁתּוֹ וְהָאִמָּא שֶׁלִּי וְאִשְׁתּי גַּם-כֵּן, הֵם הָלְכוּ לְבֵית רַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל קָרְדוֹנֶר וְזָרְקוּ אֲבָנִים, "אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי, אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי!" EN: Oy vey, oy vey, ay yay yay… What I saw with my own eyes — what it means to bring shame upon the honor of the Tzadik. Hashem pays immediately — He pays well. With my own eyes I saw what one suffers when one does harm to the Tzadik. When one brings shame and causes pain to the Tzadik — ho… Rachmana litzlan — it is worse than all the transgressions in the Torah, worse than everything! Segment 11 HE: הָיָה לוֹ שַׁבָּת לְרַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל.. שָׁבְרוּ אֶת כָּל הַכֵּלִים שֶׁלּוֹ, לֹא הִשְׁגִּיחוּ עַל חִלּוּל שַׁבָּת. שָׁבְרוּ אֶת הַכַּד שֶׁל מַיִם שֶׁנִּכְנַס בּוֹ שְׁלשָׁה-אַרְבַּע פַּחִים מַיִם - שָׁבְרוּ. כָּל הָאֲבָנִים שֶׁל טְבֶרְיָה זָרְקוּ לְעֵבֶר רַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל. נוּ, בַּלַּיְלָה מֻכְרָחִים לִישֹׁן, אָז הֵם עָשׂוּ הַפְסָקָה וְהָלְכוּ לִישֹׁן, אֲבָל בַּבֹּקֶר הַשְׁכֵּם כֻּלָּם קָמוּ וְהָלְכוּ בִּבְכִיּוֹת: "אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי, מַה זֶּה, הַבְּרֶסְלֵבִים עוֹשִׂים צָרוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁיְּכוֹלִים לָמוּת. מַה זֶּה!" EN: There is nothing worse than opposition to the Tzadik. Rachmana litzlan — one suffers from this in this world; in the World to Come — forever! Segment 12 HE: עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים הֵם כְּבָר בְּיוֹם שִׁשִּׁי הָלְכוּ לַמֻּכְתָּר, וְהַמֻּכְתָּר הוּא חִפֵּשׂ דְּבָרִים כָּאֵלֶּה כִּי הוּא אוֹהֵב כֶּסֶף, הוּא יוּכַל לָקַחַת מֵהַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹת שֶׁל רַב צְבִי וְיִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער כֶּסֶף, אָז יִהְיֶה מִזֶּה מִסְחָר טוֹב. אָז הוּא אָמַר לְאִשְׁתּוֹ: "עַל הַבְּרֶסְלֵבִים הַכֹּל לְהַאֲמִין. אֲנִי חוֹשֵׁב שֶׁהֵם שָׁלְחוּ אוֹתוֹ לְאוּמַן. הוּא לֹא בִּירוּשָׁלַיִם, הוּא לֹא בִּצְפָת, הֵם שָׁלְחוּ אוֹתוֹ לְאוּמַן". הָאַנְגְּלִים הָיָה בַּמִּלְחָמָה עִם תּוּרְכִּיָּה: "נוּ, זֶה רִגּוּל. אֵצֶל הַבְּרֶסְלֵבִים לֹא שַׁיָּךְ מִלְחָמָה". EN: I thought perhaps my father-in-law would do teshuvah [repentance] — but I should not have been silent. I should only have quarreled and demanded a divorce. I did not do so. For what my father-in-law did I was silent — and because of this I suffer greatly. The honor of the Tzadik — Hashem is exceedingly particular about this above all else! Even if done unintentionally! Segment 13 HE: עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים הָאִמָּא שֶׁלִּי וְאִשְׁתִּי וְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה הֵם בָּאוּ לְבֵית-הַסֹּהַר וְרָאוּ אוֹתִי דֶּרֶךְ הַחֲלוֹנוֹת, אָמְרוּ לִי: "מַה נִּשְׁמָע? אַתָּה יָצָאתָ בְּאֶמְצַע הַתְּפִלָּה". EN: The honor of the Tzadik — Hashem is exceedingly, exceedingly particular. Before Hashem this is greater than all the transgressions in the Torah — the honor of the Tzadik… Segment 14 HE: נוּ, עָבַר אֵיזֶה כַּמָּה שָׁעוֹת עַד שֶׁבָּא הַפָּקִיד הַגָּדוֹל הַמּוֹשֵׁל עַל הַשׂוֹטְרִים וְעַל הַכֹּל, וְהוּא כְּבָר יָדַע שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ חָבֵר טוֹב - זֶה הַמֻּכְתָּר, מַה שֶּׁהוּא אוֹמֵר לַמֻּכְתָּר הוּא עוֹשֶׂה. וְהוּא הַמָּסוּר - הַמֻּכְתָּר, הוּא כְּבָר יָדַע מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת. אָז הַמֻּכְתָּר בָּא וְהוֹצִיא אוֹתִי מִבֵּית-הַסֹּהַר לְהַקָּצִין הַגָּדוֹל, הָיֶּעדְנִרַאל, וְהוּא דִּבֵּר בְּתַקִּיפוּת, הוּא גֶּנֶרַל, הוּא אָמַר לִי: "תַּגִּיד אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי!" EN: I drew close to our holy Rabbenu before the wedding. And after the wedding my wife and I had no apartment — so we were at my father-in-law's, and he was associated with the great opponents; he had a rav who was a wicked man. So he was such an opponent. He said to me: "I do not want a Breslov son-in-law — I do not want this." Segment 15 HE: קֹדֶם הִשְׁכִּיבוּ אוֹתִי עַל הָרִצְפָּה וְהֵרִימוּ אֶת הָרַגְלַיִם לְמַעְלָה, וְלָקְחוּ חֶבֶל וְקָשְׁרוּ אֶת הַיָּדַיִם, הָיָה בַּרְזֵלִים חֲזָקִים. וְהָיָה שׁוֹטֵר אֶחָד מִצַּד זֶה, וְשׁוֹטֵר אֶחָד מִצַּד זֶה, וְהָרַגְלַיִם הָיוּ לְמַעְלָה, וְאָמְרוּ לִי: "אִם תַּגִּיד אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי - טוֹב. אִם לֹא.. אָז תָּמוּת! אֲנַחְנוּ נַכֶּה לְךָ מַכּוֹת רֶצַח!" EN: I said to him: "What business is it of yours? This does not belong to you. Whatever Chassidus I want — I will be in it." Segment 16 HE: וְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה שֶׁלִּי שׁוֹמְעִים אֵיךְ הוּא מְדַבֵּר אִתִּי, וְהֵם פָּחֲדוּ שֶׁאִם יַכּוּ אוֹתִי אָז אֲנִי אָמוּת. מָה, שׁוֹטְרִים עֲרָבִיִּים הֵם נוֹתְנִים מַכּוֹת רֶצַח. הָיָה בְּכִיּוֹת, הָאִמָּא שֶׁלִּי וְאִשְׁתִּי. הֵם קָשְׁרוּ אוֹתִי וְשָׁכַבְתִּי עִם הָרַגְלַיִם לְמַעְלָה וְהֵם הֶחֱזִיקוּ אֶת הַמַּקְלוֹת, וְהַקָּצִין אָמַר לִי: "תַּגִּיד אֵיפֹה רַב צְבִי!" EN: He said to me: "Yes — be. But Breslov: no!" Segment 17 HE: אָמַרְתִּי: "אֲנִי חוֹשֵׁב שֶׁהוּא הָלַךְ לִירוּשָׁלַיִם". EN: I had a handshake agreement with Rabbi Yisroel that every night and every day we must meet — once by day and once at night. Whether to study together or not — but we must meet. And how could this be — what would happen? It was forbidden for us to speak together, to be together, to study together. Segment 18 HE: אָז אָמַר לִי: "תֵּדַע, אֲנַחְנוּ יֵשׁ לָנוּ שָׁלִיחַ, חַיָּל, אִם לֹא יִמְצְאוּ אוֹתוֹ אָז נָמִית אוֹתְךָ, אַתָּה תָּמוּת. נַכֶּה אוֹתְךָ עַד הַמָּוֶת, תַּגִּיד אֱמֶת!" EN: Once my father-in-law locked the door on Lail Shabbos [Shabbos night] and did not let me go out. He did not know of the handshake — but he did not want me to go to Rabbi Yisroel. I thought: "Tonight I will not go to Rabbi Yisroel for Shabbos night." Segment 19 HE: אָז אָמַרְתִּי: "זֶהוּ אֱמֶת. זֶה הַשֵּׁם יוֹדֵעַ". EN: In any case at midnight he did not know — he thought Rabbi Yisroel was already sleeping and that I needed to sleep. So he opened the house and let me out. But he was watching over me and he saw that I was fleeing — so he understood that I was fleeing to Rabbi Yisroel. He went after me. And I saw Rabbi Yisroel, we met — and when I returned my father-in-law returned after me and struck me and brought me down upon dogs [i.e., dragged me in the dirt, utterly humiliated me]… Segment 20 HE: אָז עָזְבוּ אוֹתִי, וְשָׁלְחוּ בְּשַׁבָּת לְהַדֶּרֶךְ לִירוּשָׁלַיִם לְחַפֵּשׂ אֶת רַב צְבִי... EN: Who heard of such a thing, who saw such a thing — he and his wife struck my wife murderous blows so that she would accept a divorce: "What — Breslov should be for my daughter?! It is forbidden to take them, forbidden to see them. What is this — the world is lawless! Do you know what Breslov is?! Get divorced!" Segment 21 HE: אֲנִי וְרַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל קָרְדוֹנֶר הָיִינוּ בְּסַכָּנָה, הֵם אָמְרוּ עָלֵינוּ שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְרַגְּלִים. רוּסְיָה הָיָה בְּמִלְחָמָה עִם הַתּוּרְכִּים, וְהַתּוּרְכִּים אָמְרוּ שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ שָׁלַחְנוּ אֲנָשִׁים לְרוּסְיָה, אֲנַחְנוּ הָיִינוּ בְּסַכַּנַת מְרַגְּלִים. הָיָה נִסִּים מֵהַשָּׁמַיִם. עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים בְּמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת הֵם מָצְאוּ אֶת רַב צְבִי בַּעֲפוּלָה וְאָמְרוּ לוֹ: "תֵּדַע שֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער וְרַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵם בְּבֵית-הַסֹּהַר וְהֵם בְּסַכָּנָה גְּדוֹלָה. תַּחֲזֹר אִתָּנוּ, אֲנַחְנוּ נִקַּח אוֹתְךָ לָאוֹטוֹ". הוּא שָׁמַע שֶׁזֶּה סַכָּנָה, אָז הוּא חָזַר אִתָּם וְהֵם חָזְרוּ לִטְבֶרְיָה בְּמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת. אֲבָל הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה שֶׁלִּי רָצְתָה שֶׁיְּשַׁחְרְרוּ אוֹתִי מֵהַבֵּית-סֹהַר שֶׁאֵלֵךְ הַבַּיְתָה, וְהַחֹק הָיָה: "בַּלַּיְלָה לֹא נוֹתְנִים לְשׁוּם בֶּן-אָדָם לָצֵאת, אִם הוּא בְּבֵית-הַסֹּהַר הוּא מֻכְרָח לְחַכּוֹת עַד הַבֹּקֶר. בַּלַּיְלָה אֵין שִׁחְרוּרִים!" EN: And she said: "No — this is not so…"
