Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Dream of the Officer הַסְכָּמָתוֹ שֶׁל רַב משֶׁה פַיינְשְׁטֵיין Source: https://ajew.org/reader/yisroel-saba/1/39 Segment 1 HE: אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לִשְׁמֹר הַזְּמַן מְאֹד! EN: Last night I had a dream. The dream was in Teveriah, and Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner came to me from Chevron to Teveriah. There was a great uproar throughout all of Eretz Yisroel: "Yisroel Ber has become a Breslover — and this is a danger to the whole world! He and Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner must be killed!" EN: Suddenly a great officer came into my room — and he had many officers under him. This great officer came to me, pointed his finger at me, and said with great arrogance: "Give me the Petek!" EN: I said to him: "Why — what is there, what is so terrible? What do you fear so much from the Petek?" EN: "What do you ask — give the Petek!" EN: I said to him: "Why do you want the Petek — what is in the Petek?" EN: Then he said to me: "You ask what there is to fear?! You do not know what this is — you do not know what the Petek can do. It will drive mad all of Bnei Brak and all the world. First it will drive mad all of Bnei Brak — and afterwards it will drive mad all the world! It will drive mad the entire world, it will kill the entire world and Bnei Brak!" EN: Bnei Brak was the great city of all Eretz Yisroel, and all of Bnei Brak were opponents against Breslov — the whole world was opposed. I said to him: "I do not know — I do not remember where I put it." EN: Then he said to me: "Ahh! You do not remember? I have enough soldiers — they will search until they find it. We will search in every place!" EN: Then I was afraid — perhaps they would take the Petek. I had great fear, great pain. What could I do? "G-d forbid — who knows, perhaps they will find it…" Segment 10 HE: "יֵשׁ עִנְיָן שֶׁנִּתְהַפֵּךְ הַכֹּל לְטוֹבָה.." EN: Then I remembered that one of the Chassidim had come to me at the beginning of the night and asked me to have pity on him and give him the Petek for the night. He wanted to strengthen himself and be joyful: "Rabbi Yisroel — give me just for the night to read and see the Petek." So I gave him the Petek for one night and he went. So, blessed be Hashem, I had some respite: the Petek was not in Bnei Brak and not here. It was by the Chassid in his house — and no one knew of this but me. If so — let them search. EN: Nu, nu — I was strong. I was confident they would not find it. The officer did not know at all about the Chassid who had asked for the Petek. I said to myself: "The Chassid took the Petek and they do not know. Now he can search everywhere." So many officers went with many soldiers to search for the Petek. EN: Ho — when I remembered that the Petek was by the Chassid in his house, I had great joy. Let them search and search — so let them search… Segment 13 HE: אֲהָהּ! EN: And the Petek — it is all a wonder beyond any grasp. If one sees a photograph of the Petek, one feels that this is not simple. It was stored in the bookcase — and then passed through such great dangers… It was in Poland, before the Second World War. They heard of it there — so they asked me to send it to them so they could see the Petek. But these Poles — if something did not appear right to them, they would tear it up and call me: "Do not be foolish — you are desecrating G-d's Name! How in these generations is it possible that there be such miracles, in these generations, in this darkness?" EN: Blessed be Hashem — we must thank Hashem that they returned it and I received it back by mail. It was a miracle — a miracle. They received it. Had they not — they would have torn it up. Yes — they were people of truth. And now I feel — I see — that I made such a mistake… It was truly madness: how did I send this by mail to Poland? But I could not refuse such friends — so I sent it. And it was a miracle that I received it back and it is alive — it exists in the world. At that time there was not even a photograph — as if it did not exist at all in the world. Had I, G-d forbid, not received it back… it would not exist — as if it had never been in the world at all! Now — even G-d forbid if the original does not endure, in any case there are photographs. The photograph is the same thing — one sees the very letters as written in the Petek. EN: The photograph is like the original! EN: Now, blessed be Hashem, the world already knows that there is a letter, there is a photograph, people speak of it. One must take an airplane to fly throughout the entire world and show to all the world the Petek and its holder! EN: The Petek is entirely new. I see wonders that before I did not merit to see — what this is. But every new day that comes, I feel Hashem shows me what this is. Oy vey vey… EN: What a pity — we know nothing at all! If we knew even a drop from the sea of Rabbenu — we would devote ourselves at every moment not to remove our eyes and head from Rabbenu's words. We must be fluent in them. This is miracles and wonders — every word, every matter, every Torah teaching of Rabbenu. EN: Every word of Rabbenu is above nature: the Sipuray Maasiyos, the Torah teachings, the conversations, and Chayay Moharan. We must guard every moment we are alive — to put all our strength, mind, and heart into Likutay Halachos, into Likutay Aytzos, so this is embedded in every limb, in the entire mind, in the heart — for the service of Hashem! Not for… EN: And in sum — the essential to take from this is that we must give our very souls to be cleaved to the holy words of Rabbenu — but with emunah. One can study and be blind, seeing nothing. If one studies for pride — "I am a Breslover, I am fluent in Likutay Moharan" — that is great honor. But one must study not for honor — only to serve Hashem, to fulfill his words. The essential is to study in order to know how to fight — battle tactics: how to fight and conquer, how to subdue the evil. Segment 21 HE: נָפַלְתָּ! EN: There are still wondrous hidden matters — not yet revealed in the world. Blessed be Hashem — today each person, everyone who wishes to study, can read in every synagogue. These are signs of the redemption. We are fortunate — we already have all the repairs and healings and salvations we need, each and every one — through Rabbenu Nachman. Only Rabbenu Nachman! EN: Oy — we hear such words! So we must give our very souls to bring Rabbenu's holy words into our hearts — his Torah teachings and prayers and laws. There is the book Likutay Moharan, Likutay Halachos, Likutay Aytzos… EN: We must study in the book Likutay Moharan. Our holy Rabbenu said one must be so fluent in it as to be able to recite it forward and backward — even backward! Such fluency is needed. For this is all our life-force — every word is all our life-force! His every word — even a single word! EN: Happy are we, happy are we without measure. How did Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner come to be as he was, and how did all the people of our community come to be — all the people of Rabbenu and the people of Rav Noson who were such holy ones, such people of truth? Only through Likutay Tfilos and Likutay Moharan and the conversations they had. Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner merited only through Likutay Tfilos and Likutay Moharan and Likutay Halachos! EN: There was not yet in the world the Likutay Halachos and Likutay Aytzos and Chayay Moharan. Not yet. We are privileged — everything is ready: Chayay Moharan and Alim LiTerufa. There were letters from Alim LiTerufa — but they were by Rav Yitzchak, Rav Noson's son, in manuscript. Nu — and we already have Alim LiTerufa and Chayay Moharan and Ymay Moharanat [The Days of Rav Noson — his diary] and more. Yes — what we have… EN: I remember from eighty years ago — Rav Shlomo Wexler. He had such words about Rabbenu — but they were not revealed. And there were still many other manuscripts that we did not merit. I saw — there were springs, yes. In the time of Rav Shlomo Wexler, before the Second World War, some were by Rav Shmu'el Horvitz — there were manuscripts from Rav Noson. Some went and were lost… EN: I had a Likutay Tfilos in the handwriting of Rav Noson, and also many manuscripts that could have made a commotion in all the world today. There was one Chassid who was a ritual slaughterer in America — over sixty years ago — and with him there were several young married scholars and Chassidim from Poland. He came to me and told me he wanted to see me. EN: Fine — they traveled to me at Meron and asked me to give them the manuscripts for spiritual awakening. And I, Yisroel Ber, thought: "A Breslov Chassid asks for manuscripts for awakening in divine service — shall I not give him?" So I gave him the manuscripts and they did not return them to me. I lent to you — why do you not return them? EN: It was a manuscript of Rav Naftali — a friend of Rav Noson — written like a Chayay Moharan by Rav Naftali. But there were such awesome secrets in it as have not been revealed in the world. Had it been found today they would print it. Everything Rav Noson brought in Chayay Moharan — these are secrets that could be revealed to the world. But in these manuscripts there were secrets that cannot be revealed to the world — such great secrets that could have shaken the whole world… And they vanished! EN: They had a car accident — and the manuscript was with them. They were saved by a miracle — and the manuscript disappeared… EN: I also had manuscripts in the handwriting of Rav Noson — writings about what the people of our community suffered, the persecutions they endured. I remember one story: before Chag HaPesach in some year, many soldiers came to Breslov — several brigades. And then the city was required to house all the Russian soldiers in the homes of the Jews, wealthy and poor alike — in every house: soldiers. EN: The opponents found something good against Breslov Chassidim — they bribed the general and the great men, so that soldiers should be placed specifically in Rav Noson's house. And this was close to Pesach — one must make Pesach, clean the house of chametz. EN: Fine — the opponents did what they did: to place many soldiers specifically in Rav Noson's house. And Rav Noson's house suffered from this — Pesach was approaching and they had to make the Pesach holiday but how? There were soldiers — it was impossible to do anything. The opponents gave a bribe. In Russia the essential is bribery. EN: Hashem in His great kindness, for the sake of our holy Rabbenu, performed a miracle. Suddenly the soldiers received orders to leave Breslov. So all the soldiers left Breslov — not only from Rav Noson's house but from all of Breslov… EN: Also Rabbi Yisroel Kardoner printed — and what beautiful printing Rabbi Yisroel had! Such a binding, such paper — one does not see such beauty. I went to the shop with a few small coins and gave them to the seller. Blessed be Hashem — I paid him and he gave me the book Likutay Tfilos and said: "When you have the money — bring it." So it was — he gave it to me. EN: How Hashem had mercy on me that I found such a book from the printing of Rabbi Yisroel — such beauty, such a binding… And the seller gave it to me. He understood that I desperately needed this book. He had a strong inner struggle: if he sells me the book — there is no other. He could have profited greatly because it was unobtainable. In those days they did not print Breslov books — no one bought them. Likutay Tfilos — who would recite Likutay Tfilos? EN: I also had Likutay Tfilos from several printings from abroad — what beautiful printing they were! Such beauty, such grace, such awakening… EN: I had several books — two or three books — but I bought and gave and nothing remained for me. I gave as gifts to people of our community: for a bar mitzvah, for a groom, and for other occasions. I gave gifts and remained without any. I loved the people of our community: "What — he has a bar mitzvah and I will not give him a gift?" I have no money — so I took a Likutay Tfilos and gave it… EN: There is one spring — such a sweet spring. I was there with Rabbi Yisroel, and the water was so good — the water is like water from the Garden of Eden. And it also gives such fruits — so tasty that there are none in the world so good and sweet as these. They have all the flavors of the world. I walked there, and afterwards I passed through Wadi Amud and I lost the book Meshivas Nefesh [Restoring the Soul] there. At Wadi Amud there are many springs. EN: My pain… impossible to describe. If it was lost — there was nothing to buy; they did not print. The book had vanished from me in a place of springs and water. In any case I wept so before Hashem — and Hashem helped me: I found it in the water. The book was on some stone with water around it. I had already despaired… and Hashem helped me — I found it. EN: Oy — who can tell, who can describe the joy I had when I merited to find the book Meshivas Nefesh… EN: When I was a yeshiva student I had a friend who took all my books — the books of Rabbenu and Rav Noson, Likutay Halachos and other books — and put them in some box and placed the box in a very high window near the ceiling. I had great pain — I did not know where the books were. I only knew I did not have them. And Hashem had mercy on me — he revealed to me what had been done. He took a large ladder, brought down the books, and returned the box with the books to me. He asked forgiveness for doing this and for causing me pain. EN: He should not have done this — for I had great pain. I need Rabbenu's books every day. He saw with his own eyes that I was alone against the entire yeshiva and I was very strong. And he loved me greatly. We were all friends — but they were opponents against Breslov. Even so there was friendship and love between us. EN: But we must guard our time greatly! EN: It is important at every moment not to lose, not to let even a moment go to waste. To always be immersed — in the mind, in the heart, in the words we need as we need breath. Every word. We do not know — we have no grasp whatsoever of what Hashem gives us. We must guard every moment. Every day and every moment to be cleaved to Hashem and to the tzadik. EN: We must pray much more — more and more with mesiras nefesh! EN: To serve Hashem and pray in tears with all one's heart and all one's strength: "Have mercy on me, have mercy on me. There is such a Likutay Tfilos in the world — what will become of me? Why am I so distant…" EN: And also we do not guard our time, we do not guard the Torah — this is the essential reason we are far from Rabbenu. Because we do not consider it important, we do not place in our hearts all the words of the Likutay Moharan and Likutay Halachos and all the other holy words of Rabbenu. If we had merited this — we would be holy tzadikim. We would study much Talmud and understand it — the Talmud would illuminate within us. Not as now — knowing nothing, not knowing Talmud. They think themselves geniuses and say G-d forbid about Breslov all manner of things. Nu, nu — the time will come… EN: Blessed be Hashem — we sit in this world and speak such words that the whole world is completely far from. But the time will come when the whole world will know of this and will tell and speak of it. There will be many yeshivas that will study — not for honor, only for the sake of Hashem and the glory of Hashem: "Who is this King of glory? The L-rd of hosts — He is the King of glory!" EN: There will be yeshivas for nothing but the study of Rabbenu's books! EN: There is Likutay Moharan — blessed be Hashem, happy are we! There is Likutay Tfilos — happy are we! And there is Sichos HaRan [Conversations of Rabbenu] and there is Likutay Aytzos — happy are we! Everything — happy are we! Our holy Rabbenu left everything. From our perspective this too is miracles. Great miracles — what we still have…
