# Chapter Eight: Opposition to the Books of Rabbenu

## Segment 1

אַחַר-כָּךְ הוּא הָיָה בַּלָּשׁ. אֲנִי יָשַׁבְתִּי בֶּחָצֵר שֶׁלּוֹ וְהָיָה לִי מִטְבָּח קָטָן, בַּעַל-הַמִּטְבָּח רָצָה לְהַשְׂכִּיר אֶת הַמִּטְבָּח וְלֹא הָיָה לוֹ אַף אֶחָד, אָז אֲנִי בָּאתִי אֵלָיו: "כַּמָּה אַתָּה רוֹצֶה לְהַשְׂכִּיר לִי עַל הַמִּטְבָּח?"

There was a very important man in Teveriah — he was well known and a Torah scholar. I was neighbors with him in the yeshiva, and he was like an Admor among the Chassidim. They would come to him in Teveriah each time. He had a great name and great renown. I entered to him — there were some Chassidim present — and I called him by his name, not calling him "Rebbi," and I said to him: "What will become of you — in the end you will be in Breslov! Study Likutay Halachos and then you will know what Breslov is."

אָז הוּא אָמַר לִי אֵיזֶה סְכוּם קָטָן. טוֹב, אֲנִי לָקַחְתִּי, אֲבָל אֵין לִי גַּם אֶת הַסְּכוּם הַקָּטָן. אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: "אַל תִּדְאַג, אֲנִי אֲשַׁלֵּם לְךָ".

He loved Breslov as his own soul — he envied me. And I said to him: "Nu — when will you be in Breslov?" And they already knew that he loved Breslov.


## Segment 3

וַאֲנִי מָצָאתִי מֵהַסּוֹחֲרִים אֵיזֶה תֵּבָה שְׁבוּרָה וְלָקַחְתִּי בְּתוֹךְ הַמִּטְבָּח וְהָיָה לִי אֵיזֶה תֵּבָה בִּשְׁבִיל שֻׁלְחָן. אֲנִי בְּעַצְמִי יָשַׁבְתִּי עַל הָרִצְפָּה וְנָתַתִּי אֵיזֶה סְמַרְטוּטִים עַל הָרִצְפָּה וְאָמַרְתִּי 'לִקּוּטֵי תְּפִלּוֹת', תְּהִלִּים. הַדַּיָּן רָאָה אֶת הַ'דִּירָה' שֶׁלִּי, אֶת הַמִּטְבָּח, וְאֵיךְ אֲנִי עוֹסֵק בְּ'לִקּוּטֵי תְּפִלּוֹת' וְאֵין לִי לֶחֶם לֶאֱכֹל וְהָאִשָּׁה בִּצְפָת אֵצֶל הַהוֹרִים שֶׁלָּהּ וַאֲנִי שָׂמֵחַ, "מַה זֶּה, אֵיזֶה חַיִּים זֶה, מַה זֶּה?" אָז הוּא לֹא הֵבִין אֶת זֶה מֵהֵיכָן אֲנִי לוֹקֵחַ אֶת זֶה.

So he began to weep: "What will become of me? Why am I not strong — I want to be strong like you!"


## Segment 4

עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ רִחֵם עָלַי וְהַשָּׁכֵן שֶׁל בַּעַל-הַמִּטְבָּח שֶׁהָיָה גָּר עַל-יַד הַדַּיָּן יָצָא לְדִירָה אַחֶרֶת, אָז הַדַּיָּן יָדַע שֶׁאֲנִי אֵין לִי דִּירָה וְאֵין לִי אִשָּׁה וְאֵין לִי כְּלוּם, אָז הוּא שָׂכַר בִּשְׁבִילִי אֶת הַדִּירָה מִבַּעַל-הַמִּטְבָּח שֶׁהָיָה בַּעַל-הַבַּיִת שֶׁל כָּל הֶחָצֵר וְהוּא בָּא אֵלַי וְאָמַר לִי שֶׁהוּא שָׂכַר לִי דִּירָה, "תִּכְתֹּב לְאִשְׁתְּךָ שֶׁתָּבוֹא".

He said: "It is not only the money — I want to study Torah." He was respected, and if he had been a Breslover they would have driven him out. He was great in Torah and was a Chassid of their group and was against them [i.e., that Chassidic group was itself in opposition to Breslov], and he said: "No, no — only Breslov!"


## Segment 5

אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: "טוֹב, דִּירָה יֵשׁ קִירוֹת, אֲבָל אֵין שֻׁלְחָן אֵין לִי כִּסֵּא אֵין לִי שׁוּם דָּבָר. וּמַה, אֵיךְ אֲנִי אֶכְתֹּב לָהּ שֶׁתָּבוֹא?"

Once he saw what I was suffering. He envied me, so he took a book of Likutay Moharan from me and went into his room in the yeshiva and studied from the Likutay Moharan. Afterwards he sat at the entrance of the synagogue and studied. Then a great commotion arose in the yeshiva: "He is studying from Likutay Moharan!"


## Segment 6

אָז הוּא הִכָּה אוֹתִי וְאָמַר לִי: "זֶה לֹא עִסְקְךָ, אֲנִי אֶתֵּן לְךָ דִּירָה וְרָהִיטִים. יִהְיֶה לְךָ כִּסְאוֹת וְיִהְיֶה לְךָ שֻׁלְחָן וּמִטָּה. תִּכְתֹּב שֶׁתָּבוֹא!"

They said to him: "What are you doing?!"


## Segment 7

וְכָכָה הָיָה. בִּטְבֶרְיָה הָיָה נַגָּר מְצֻיָּן וַאֲנִי לֹא יָדַעְתִּי שֶׁהוּא בְּרֶסְלֶב, הוּא נִתְקָרֵב לְרַבֵּנוּ הַקָּדוֹשׁ וַאֲנִי לֹא יָדַעְתִּי. הוּא שָׁמַע שֶׁאֲנִי סוֹבֵל אָז הוּא הָיָה מִתְקָרֵב אֵלַי, וְהוּא הָיָה גִּבּוֹר וְחָכָם, אָז אֲנִי חָשַׁבְתִּי שֶׁהוּא מַתְחִיל לְהִתְלוֹצֵץ מִמֶּנִּי וְשֶׁאֶצְלוֹ הָיָה חֲסִידוּת מִן צְחוֹק. אֲבָל הוּא סִפֵּר לִי אֵיךְ שֶׁהוּא נִתְקָרֵב: "אֲנִי בְּרֶסְלֶב. אֲנִי רָאִיתִי זוּג שֶׁבָּאוּ מֵרוּסְיָה וְהֵם קָמוּ בַּחֲצוֹת לַיְלָה וְאָמְרוּ חֲצוֹת וְהֵם קֵרְבוּ אוֹתִי לִבְרֶסְלֶב".

"I want to study only Breslov books — whatever may come!"


## Segment 8

אָז הַדַּיָּן הֵבִיא אֶת זֶה הַנַּגָּר שֶׁהָיָה מֻמְחֶה גָּדוֹל בְּנַגָּרוּת, וְהָיָה לוֹ בַּמַּחְסָן כַּמָּה כִּסְאוֹת שְׁבוּרִים וְהוּא עָשָׂה לִי כִּסְאוֹת וְשֻׁלְחָן. זֶה רָהִיטִים הָיָה חִדּוּשׁ בִּטְבֶרְיָה, וַאֲנִי הָיָה לִי כִּסְאוֹת וְשֻׁלְחָן.

They informed the rav and the gabba'im of the yeshiva, and they said to him: "Fine — you want to be in Breslov, you can be. Only know that you will receive a salary like Yisroel Ber. Ask him how much he receives — he receives two lirot a month. You will receive two lirot a month like Yisroel Ber."

הַבָּנוֹת שֶׁל הַדַּיָּן, הֵם רָאוּ שֶׁהוּא מִשְׁתַּעֲשֵׁעַ אִתִּי וְהוּא אָהַב אוֹתִי אַף-עַל-פִּי שֶׁאֲנִי הָיִיתִי פָּשׁוּט, וְגַם-כֵּן הוּא בְּעַצְמוֹ לֹא יָדַע מַה זֶּה, מַדּוּעַ הוּא אוֹהֵב אוֹתִי. וְהַבָּנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ הֵם בָּאוּ וַאֲנִי הֵבֵאתִי אֶת אִשְׁתִּי, לֹא הָיָה לָהּ בֶּגֶד לְשַׁבָּת, לֹא הָיָה לָהּ שִׂמְלָה, אָז אָמְרוּ לוֹ הַבָּנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ: "הֵבֵאתָ אֶת הָאִשָּׁה, אֵין לָהּ נַעֲלַיִם וְאֵין לָהּ שִׂמְלָה וְאֵין לָהּ כְּלוּם. צְרִיכִים לַעֲשׂוֹת. בָּאָה הָאִשָּׁה בְּלִי בֶּגֶד בְּלִי נַעֲלַיִם". אָז נוֹדַע לוֹ שֶׁאֵין לָהּ כְּלוּם.

So he said to me: "How is it possible to survive — I even receive twenty lirot a month and it is not enough for me. What will I do with two lirot? So it is impossible." And every time he saw me he would say: "I envy you — I could not stand the test."


## Segment 10

בִּטְבֶרְיָה הַמֻּכְתָּר שֶׁל הָעִיר הָיָה שְׁמוֹ יַעֲקֹב. יַעֲקֹב הוּא הָיָה סַנְדְּלָר מֻמְחֶה, כְּמוֹ הַנַגָּר הָיָה בְּנַגָּרוּת - הוּא הָיָה בַּנַּעֲלַיִם. וְעָמְדוּ בַּתּוֹר אֶצְלוֹ, הוּא לֹא מְקַבֵּל כָּל אֶחָד, הָיָה הַרְבֵּה כֶּסֶף. הוּא עָבַד כָּל-כָּךְ עַל כָּל נַעַל וְהַנַּעַל הָיָה חָזָק וְיָפֶה, שְׁנֵיהֶם. אָז הַדַּיָּן שָׁלַח לִי לְיַעֲקֹב, הוּא הַנַּגָּר הֲכִי מֻבְחָר שֶׁבִּטְבֶרְיָה. נוּ, אָז לֹא הָיָה חֲנֻיּוֹת וְלֹא הָיָה מוּכָן, כְּשֶׁצְּרִיכִים נַעֲלַיִם הָיוּ צְרִיכִים לַעֲמֹד בַּתּוֹר וְלִיקַח מִדָּה וְלַעֲשׂוֹת לְפִי הַמִּדָּה, הָיוּ צְרִיכִים לְחַכּוֹת שְׁבוּעַיִם-שְׁלשָׁה בַּתּוֹר. אֲנִי הָלַכְתִּי, וְאִשְׁתִּי אֵין לָהּ נַעֲלַיִם, זֶה צְרִיכִים תּוֹר, צְרִיכִים כַּמָּה שָׁבוּעוֹת, מַה יִּהְיֶה?

And I had two lirot a month — and I danced all night, and traveled to Meron and to Yerushalayim, and had a good life…


## Segment 11

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

אָז אֲנִי בָּאתִי אֵלָיו וְאָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: "הַדַּיָּן אָמַר שֶׁתִּתֵּן לִי זוּג נַעֲלַיִם, הַמִּסְפָּר זֶה וְזֶה". אָז הוּא אָמַר: "יֵשׁ לִי הַמִּסְפָּר שֶׁלָּהּ מוּכָן, לֹא צְרִיכִים לְחַכּוֹת". אָז הוּא נָתַן לִי הַנַּעֲלַיִם וְהָיָה יָפִים וְטוֹבִים מְאֹד לְפִי הַמִּדָּה שֶׁלָּהּ, אָז בְּשַׁבַּת הַשֵּׁנִי אִשְׁתִּי הָיָה לָהּ כְּבָר בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם נַעֲלַיִם.

His brother was ill. I went to visit him, and said to him: "If G-d forbid there is any defect within you, any opposition against Rabbenu — cast it off!"


## Segment 12

עַל-כָּל-פָּנִים בָּאוּ הַבָּנוֹת שֶׁל הַדַּיָּן וְאָמְרוּ לוֹ: "אֵין לָהּ שִׂמְלָה עַל שַׁבַּת, צְרִיכִים לַעֲשׂוֹת לָהּ שִׂמְלָה". אָז הַדַּיָּן שָׁלַח אוֹתִי לְאֵיזֶה סוֹחֵר שֶׁל שְׁאֵרִיּוֹת בַד וְהַסּוֹחֵר בָּחַר חֲתִיכוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מַסְפִּיק בַּד בִּשְׁבִיל לְהָכִין שִׂמְלָה. וְאִשְׁתִּי הָיְתָה תּוֹפֶרֶת וְהִיא תָּפְּרָה וְהָיָה לָהּ גַּם שִׂמְלָה עַל שַׁבַּת.

And I brought him three books: Likutay Tfilos, the letters Alim LiTrufa [the collected letters of Rav Noson of Breslov], and Likutay Halachos. I said to him: "If you will occupy yourself with these three books, the illness will leave and you will live many years."


## Segment 13

הַדַּיָּן, הוּא שָׁמַע אֶת הַ'שָּׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם' שֶׁלִּי וְ'אֵשֶׁת-חַיִל' וַ'אֲזַמֵּר בִּשְׁבָחִין'.. אָז הוּא נִתְבַּטֵּל לְגַמְרֵי! הוּא אָמַר: "מַה זֶּה, יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער הוּא לֹא לַמְדָּן וְלֹא יוֹדֵעַ מַה זֶּה שַׁבָּת, לֹא יוֹדֵעַ כְּלוּם, אֵיךְ זֶה יָכוֹל לִהְיוֹת?"

And his wife was sitting at the table and heard. His wife said to him: "Do what Yisroel Ber says — that you will no longer be opposed to Breslov."


## Segment 14

הוּא סִפֵּר אֶת הַלֵּב שֶׁלּוֹ לְהַבָּנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ: "יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער, יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער, יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער!"

He said to me: "Fine — I will do as you told me. I will be very careful to study every day in these three books — only that I should live."


## Segment 15

הוּא הָיָה מִתְנַגֵּד גָּדוֹל, אֲבָל אַף-עַל-פִּי-כֵן הוּא אָהַב אוֹתִי, גַם הַבָּנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ הֵם הֶעֱרִיכוּ אֶת הַדַּיָּן וְיָדְעוּ שֶׁהוּא לַמְדָּן גָּדוֹל בַּעַל-מֹחַ גָּדוֹל, אֲבָל הוּא אָמַר לָהֶם: "אֲנִי מִתְבַּיֵּשׁ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער, אֲנִי רוֹאֶה אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת שֶׁלּוֹ אֵיךְ הוּא שָׂמֵחַ וּבְקשִׁי יֵשׁ לוֹ אֹכֶל לְשַׁבָּת, אֲנִי לֹא יוֹדֵעַ אֵיךְ הוּא חַי".

And so it was. He was a great scholar — he had a fine mind, a great mind. And he told me that this was healing, that it was giving him life. He studied every day much in the three books, and he found vitality every single day, and he saw that he was receiving healing — he was alive and well, healthy, completely healthy!

הָיָה הַצָּגָה נוֹרָא, הַבָּנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ הֵם שָׁמְעוּ אֶת הַהִתְנַגְּדוּת שֶׁלּוֹ, וְהֵם שָׁמְעוּ אֶת הַשַּׁבָּתִים שֶׁלִי, הַזְּמִירוֹת וְהַשִּׂמְחָה, וְהֵם רָאוּ שֶׁאֵין לִי כְּלוּם, אָז הֵם עָשׂוּ לוֹ צָרוֹת לַדַּיָּן, "מַה זֶּה, מַדּוּעַ בְּרֶסְלֶב לֹא מָצָא חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ? אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים שֶׁהוּא עוֹבֵד הַשֵּׁם כָּזֶה, הוּא תָּמִיד שָׂמֵחַ, מַה זֶּה? אֵיךְ מִתְנַגְּדִים עַל יְהוּדִי כָּזֶה שֶׁהוּא אוֹמֵר 'אֵשֶׁת-חַיִל' כָּזֶה. אֶפְשָׁר לִהְיוֹת מִתְנַגֵּד?!"

Afterwards his third brother came to visit him and saw the three Breslov books in his home in the cabinet. He knew that I was treating him, so he said: "Ho — what is this? He has gone mad — he has become a Breslover? I will show him — I will take the books." So he took the books. And the sick man lived one more day… and passed away! In his heart he harbored opposition and he was unable to overcome it — so he had a heart attack and passed away that very day. This matter was known to the entire family and to the whole city. And the third brother wept all his days: "What have I done, what have I done!"


## Segment 17

הוּא הָיָה מִתְנַגֵּד גָּדוֹל, וְהוּא הָיָה כָּל-כָּךְ מְשֻׁקָּע בַּהִתְנַגְּדוּת.. נוֹרָא. וַאֲנִי כְּנֶגְדּוֹ כְּלוּם, יַתּוּשׁ, כְּלוּם לְגַמְרֵי. הוּא הָיָה מְבֻלְבָּל, הוּא רוֹאֶה בָּעֵינַיִם זֶה הַשַּׁבָּת שֶׁלִּי וְהַשַּׁבָּת שֶׁלּוֹ וְאֵיךְ אֶפְשָׁר לִהְיוֹת מִתְנַגֵּד? הָיָה לוֹ צָרוֹת, אֲנִי עָשִׂיתִי לוֹ מַחֲלַת-לֵב...

For several years I said to the brother who had taken the books: "Give me the three books — give me the books." And he did not want to — he did not give them to me…


## Segment 18

הָיָה חֲסִידִים שֶׁהֵם הָיוּ מִתְנַגְּדִים הֲכִי גְּדוֹלִים, וַאֲנִי עָשִׂיתִי לָהֶם צָרוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה.. וְהָיָה לַיְשִׁיבָה שֶׁלָּהֶם שֵׁם יוֹתֵר מִכָּל הַיְשִׁיבוֹת אֲפִלּוּ שֶׁל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם. וְהֵם נָתְנוּ לִי שְׁתֵּי לִירוֹת לְחֹדֶשׁ בִּמְקוֹם עֲשָׂרָה, שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה, חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה לִירוֹת, הֵם נָתְנוּ לִי שְׁתֵּי לִירוֹת. אָז הֵם אָמְרוּ שֶׁהֵם נוֹתְנִים לִי רַק בִּשְׁבִיל "רַחֲמָנוּת שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ יְלָדִים קְטַנִּים וְהוּא צָרִיךְ לְפַרְנֵס. אֲבָל הוּא לֹא בֶּן-יְשִׁיבָה, הוּא לֹא לוֹמֵד גְּמָרָא. הוּא לוֹמֵד 'לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן', 'לִקּוּטֵי תְּפִלּוֹת' וּתְהִלִּים, זֶה בֶּן-יְשִׁיבָה?"

Once I remember that I wanted to work, and I was on the road in the wilderness. I was walking and there was a large pit, and there in it was a very large and thick snake. I said to myself: "Perhaps that is a rope — it cannot be such a large snake."


## Segment 19

אֲבָל הַ'לִּקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן' וְהַ'לִּקּוּטֵי תְּפִלּוֹת' וְהַתְּהִלִּים זֶה עָשָׂה לָהֶם צָרוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת...

I went down — and beside the pit there was a snake!


## Segment 20

<div dir="rtl" lang="he">

וְהַבַּת שֶׁל הַדַּיָּן שָׂרָה, מַה שֶּׁהִיא רָאֲתָה מַה שֶּׁהַדַּיָּן אוֹמֵר: "אֲנִי מִתְבַּטֵּל לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער. אֲנִי רוֹאֶה אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת שֶׁלּוֹ, אֶת הַזְּמִירוֹת, הַשִּׂמְחָה שֶׁל שַׁבָּת, וַאֲנִי יֵשׁ לִי פַּרְנָסָה, יֵשׁ לִי כָּל טוּב, וְאֵין לִי שִׂמְחָה. אָז יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּער צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת הָרַבִּי שֶׁלִּי!"

Blessed be Hashem, I came out and was saved and left from there. And the snake — I do not know what became of it. I think… such a thick one needs to eat.


## Segment 21

הַיְלָדִים שֶׁלּוֹ יוֹדְעִים אֶת זֶה שֶׁהוּא אָמַר: "רַק בְּרֶסְלֶב, בְּרֶסְלֶב, בְּרֶסְלֶב".

He [the brother who took the books] also passed away — like the snake…
