LETTER FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY-SIX
With the help of Hashem Yisborach  ·  Thursday, Parshas Vayechi — Uman  ·  Year 5604 (1843/44)
ToGreat peace — to my beloved son — my dear one — H.H. — the rabbinical scholar — and so forth — our Teacher the Rabbi Yitzchok — may he live — with all the members of his household — may they live.
He arrived here on Tuesday — the tenth of Teves past. And he found ruin in the roof of our Beis Midrash — for on the previous Thursday — Parshas Vayigash — the upper roof that is above my upper storey — and above the entire ceiling of the Beis Midrash — fell — due to the winds and the trembling. And there was a miracle — that no creature was killed or harmed. And the greatness of the pain and the commotion and the fear that Rabbi Naftali and his household had at the time it fell — he can imagine. They nearly departed this world. And the opponents rejoiced over us. And now the Beis Midrash stands without the upper roof — only the side roof remains. And the greatness of his pain and anguish of soul over this — you can understand yourselves.

But he hopes to Hashem Yisborach — Who until here helped him in His mercies to raise this holy building — through the great power of the holy elder — He will complete for them to fix also the roof — with additional improvements — and all will turn to good. Just now his mind is not clear at all — and it is impossible to explain in the open field what is in his heart in this. Just now — after many thoughts about the matter of his travels — in particular now — when such new things occurred — the counsel of Hashem will stand. And he strengthened himself in His salvation and hired today a cart to Tshehrin — to travel after Shabbas immediately — on Sunday — there. May Hashem Yisborach have mercy and lead him in peace — that he be able to arrive there one or two days before the holy Shabbas of Parshas Sh'mos. And to Hashem the salvation. And may Hashem Yisborach strengthen your heart and our hearts — that we merit to gladden our souls — and to convert all the sorrow and sighing to joy. That after all that passes over us — we are called by his holy name — and we are not joyful over the trouble of the falling of the roof from such a holy place — rather we are pained in his trouble — and we trust in Hashem Yisborach — that all will be rectified quickly — and all will turn to good.

And in truth — according to this way — and according to all that they spoke and wrote in this — one can convert all to joy. And it is a very very wondrous and awesome counsel. But even so — the adversary strengthens greatly in sadness and melancholy. But one must be a great stubborn one in this — to remember oneself every time — the truth in truth. For is it not true — that even so — Hashem Yisborach has helped us greatly — without measure. And all that he instills in his heart — weakness of spirit and sadness — from the multitude of the corruptions and blemishes and sins — even though all this is true — on the contrary — this is the strength of his joy — that even so — I too merit to be in the category of this holy gathering — called by the name of the flowing stream — the source of wisdom — and also the holy and divine one — and so forth. And the more he knows his transgressions — the more he must convert all to joy — that on the contrary — in this he rejoices more and more — that even so he merited to be in his portion. And Hashem saves in His mercies — until one merits to come to great joy through this — and combined with the other remaining counsels — and the essential through the words of foolishness and making oneself joyous. Blessed is our G-d — Who created us for His honor and set us apart from those who err — in many aspects. More than this there is no leisure to extend.

The words of your father — who is pained in your trouble — and awaits your salvation.

✦ To His Grandson Dovid Tzvi ✦

And peace to his son — his beloved grandson as his own soul — the young and wise one — our Teacher the Rabbi Dovid Tzvi — may he live.

He was in the home of his distinguished father-in-law — may his light shine — and spoke with him. And all his goal and desire is only that he continue diligently in his good learning — and walk in the way of good people — and pray with intention — and say Psalms with intention — and distance himself from a company of mockers — and from childish deeds. Only to rejoice in the joy of Israel — and to draw close to us with a whole heart. And prepare your heart to hear from us words of truth — to give life to your soul forever. In a way that it will be fulfilled in you: ben chakam y'sameach av. For it is good for a man that he bear a yoke in his youth — for youth and the beginning of life are vanity. And you already have free choice — blessed are you if you choose the life — the true and eternal good — which is Torah and prayer — for outside of this — all is vanity. Hear my son the instruction of your father — so that you be wise in your end.

The words of your grandfather.

✦ Added After Completing the Letter ✦

After completing the writing of his letter — he received via the postal — their letter from Tultchin — and from his son Rabbi Dovid Tzvi — who is now there.

My beloved son — my dear one — Dovid Tzvi — may he live. He already wrote to you before he was informed — the bad tiding about your son — of blessed memory — who passed away — in our many sins. And he rebuked you — that you not be in anger and rage and irritability at all. Now he received your letter about your heavy and difficult pain — and in all your trouble he is troubled. For he was my son — for grandchildren are like children. And what shall he say to you — my beloved son — to comfort you. It is known to all — that you are not the first — G-d forbid. For it is a measure that walks over all the earth. And as King David — peace be upon him — said: "and now why should I weep — he is going to him and so forth." And in particular — for also this one who passed away in our many sins — is for you a son in the World to Come — as our Sages said: that he takes out the person — that is his father — from the punishment of purgatory. And he argues: and was it for nothing that you blunted his teeth. Only the essential — that you set your heart from now — to settle yourself well — on what happens with you in this world. And what has passed has passed — for He is gracious and merciful — and greatly multiplies forgiveness. And from now — see to accept upon yourself — to throw off from yourself the deeds of youth and foolishness and rage and irritability — even in a place where injustice is done against you — overlook your attributes. All the more so and all the more so in a place where you were not in the right. Only fulfil: shaif v'ail shaif v'nafik — for a man is born to toil. And in particular since you were not born into wealth at all. And what you must have — he hopes to Hashem — that he will sustain you in His chesed Yisborach — but not with greatness — only with necessities. And if Hashem wills — he hopes in His chesed — that your wife will give birth quickly with ease — enduring offspring. And may the Omnipresent comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem — and benefit you from now on. Only be strong and bold — to fulfil his words — and to walk in the ways of our Master our Teacher and our Rebbe — of blessed memory — to learn greatly every day — and to force with all one's strength to pray with intention — and to say Psalms and prayers every day — and to express your conversation before Him Yisborach every day. Hope to Hashem and He will save you and comfort you doubly. And he hereby warns you and requests from you — my beloved son — that you obey his words immediately. That is — if you are still in the home of your brother Rabbi Yitzchok — that you return home immediately — at once — to your home. And do not linger in Tultchin at all. And spend your days in Torah — for this is our consolation in our poverty — and in conversation with our anshei sh'lomaynu — dear companion friends — may they live — whose majority of speech is about the eternal purpose — and in the words of his holy Torah — and to gladden our soul at every time. Hear my son my words — so that it go well with you — in this world and in the World to Come — forever. And because of the greatness of my pain and my great urgency just now — it is impossible to extend further — and this is enough for now. And if Hashem wills — when he returns here — he will write to you more in His salvation Yisborach — to comfort and to strengthen you — for the chasadim of Hashem are not exhausted.

The words of your father — who is pained in your trouble — and awaits your salvation.

Nussun as above.

And peace to my son the rabbinical scholar our Teacher the Rabbi Shakna — may his light shine. And extend peace to my wife — may she live — and to all my household — may they live. And request and warn your brother — he is my son Dovid Tzvi — may he live — that he beware — for Hashem's sake — and have mercy on himself and on me and on all the members of his household. And let him not be wrathful and angry and irritable at all. Rather — on the contrary — since his nature is to be irritable and to get angry — G-d forbid — let him overcome to convert this. And in anger — remember mercy — and convert the anger to compassion — and then it will be good for him in this world and in the World to Come. And also you fulfil all this — for anger and irritability harm very greatly — G-d protect us. And strengthen yourselves in the Torah of Hashem — to fix regular times for Torah in any case — and trust in Hashem and await His salvation at every time. For through anger nothing is accomplished — only one harms greatly — G-d protect us. For an angry one — all that he achieved was his anger. And all that one can accomplish — one accomplishes through gentle speech more and more. For the words of wise men in calm are hearkened to. And because of the great urgency it is impossible to extend at all.

The words of your father — who always seeks your peace with love — and who intercedes for you — and who urges and advises you for your benefit — in this world and in the World to Come — forever.

✦ From Uman — Motzo'ei Shabbas Parshas Sh'mos 5604 ✦

With the help of Hashem Yisborach — Motzo'ei Shabbas — the eve of Sunday — Parshas Sh'mos — 5604 — Uman.

Peace — to my beloved son — my dear one — the rabbinical scholar — and so forth — our Teacher the Rabbi Shakna — may his light shine — with all his descendants — may they live.

On the past Thursday he sent from here a letter via the postal to Tultchin — to the hand of his son Rabbi Yitzchok — may he live — and there he also extended the peace of their household. And there he informed him of his troubles that happened to them in these days — that on Thursday Parshas Vayigash the upper roof of our Kloyz fell — and was entirely destroyed. And there was a great commotion and fear for Rabbi Naftali and his household — as they can imagine. And the opponents who hate — had vengeance — and we became a mockery and a jest in their eyes — as is their way. And he arrived here on Tuesday — which is the tenth of Teves — and found suddenly this ruin — and they can imagine his pain. But his trust in Hashem Yisborach — Who until here helped him in His mercies — also now let Him not abandon him — and all will turn to good.

Just now there arose here another great commotion — that an edict went out to expel from here all those who are not registered here. And from yourself you will understand that our dear friend Rabbi Naftali — may his light shine — is one of them. And certainly he has great pain from this. Just now — however it is — he is compelled to get a permit. Therefore he is sending money to the hand of his daughter — may she live. And he requested from him to write to you — that you strive on his behalf — to toil with all your strength for his benefit. Both to see to receive immediately from the men of Nemirov — Zasliovtzin'ya — for they all promised him not to take any contribution from him — for his son Rabbi Ephraim pays on his behalf as befitting — more than his strength — greatly. And afterwards — to get a permit immediately — without great expense. And he trusts in you — that certainly you will strive in all that is possible — on his behalf and on his behalf — to urge greatly in this. As you will understand from yourself — that it is impossible for him just now to sit without a permit even for a short time. But he comes additionally to urge you — that you involve yourself in this — so that the permit reach him with alacrity — in all that is possible to hasten — and to Hashem the salvation. And also know — that he is making ready to travel in the morning — if Hashem wills — to Tshehrin. And in the meantime Hashem Yisborach arranged — that yesterday two men of our anshei sh'lomaynu from there came here — and brought for him a letter from his son-in-law and his daughter — may she live — attached here. And if Hashem wills — there in Tshehrin he will presumably seek the peace of their household for him. And because of his preoccupation he could not wait to respond to him before his departure. And also see to speak with our dear friend Rabbi Leib the Kohen — who is the Rabbi — and so forth — from Breslov — that he strive for his benefit — in the matter he promised him — in a way that he be able to pray in his home with permission. And his counsel was — that in the new year of theirs — when he must inform how many houses of prayer there are in our congregation — that he write also his home — that there is there a specific house of prayer for many years. And also now they pray in a specific house of prayer — as it truly is — for the Beis Midrash was in his home for many years. But it was disrupted for a time — and now returned to its place. Only he should write simply that there is another third Beis Midrash. And Rabbi Leib himself said to him that he would do so. But before his departure he wanted to speak again with him about this — to remind him not to forget — but the matter did not work out to meet with him face to face before his departure. Just now — see to speak with him about this — and extend peace to him with love on his behalf — and confer together secretly in counsel for the good — in a way that there be permission for this. And he trusts that they will certainly do to the greatest good — and to Hashem the salvation. And if they need any expenses for this — certainly he will repay them. But according to Rabbi Leib's words with him — no expenses are needed for this now. And there is no need to extend in this. And with them is the understanding to conduct themselves in this to the greatest good and in secret — as they will understand from themselves. And may the Good Hashem complete for them for good. And more than this there is no leisure to extend. And may Hashem Yisborach help you and sustain you with honor — and may you quickly be free from the servitude and the danger of the appointment as dratchman. For there is much benefit and salvation before Him Yisborach to sustain you without this — as all the world sustains themselves from what Hashem Yisborach arranges for them — without such fears — and many other great concerns that are in this — that touch the eternal purpose. For a simple upright person — such a livelihood is not at all appropriate for him — G-d forbid — as is known and understood by all. And much benefit and success is before Him Yisborach — that you leave this — and your livelihood will not be diminished at all. For all the livelihood of a person is fixed for him from Rosh Hashana. And in particular — soon before his departure — he heard that also your wife — may she live — does not agree at all that you be a dratchman — and cries and is pained greatly over this. And he had comfort from this — that she is an upright woman and understands that it is not at all appropriate for you — and to Hashem the salvation.

The words of your father — who always seeks your peace with love — and who intercedes for you — and urges and advises you for your benefit in this world and in the World to Come — forever.
