EN: I shall now begin, with Hashem's help, to record all the events that befall us for the good, month by month. I shall begin after Simchas Torah of this year, the year 5700 [1939-1940]. EN: After, Baruch Hashem, the festival of Sukkos and the present Shemini Atzeres had passed over us in joy and goodness, I also merited being called to the Torah in our beis midrash in the Old City, as is customary. So did my eldest son, may he live, and my second son, who was six or seven years old. He recited the Torah blessing properly and correctly, to such a degree that the members of our fellowship (anshei shlomeinu) marveled. Rabbi Yitzchak Mendel immediately said to me: "You must make a kiddush and a fitting festive meal, for you have merited - after coming from Russia, from the valley of the shadow of death - to have such a son, who at this age [six years old] can read from the Torah and recite the blessings so excellently and beautifully." This brought me joy and satisfaction, Baruch Hashem. My son who was nearly two years old also went up to the Torah together with all the children, and I recited the blessings with him properly, word by word. Even the youngest, may he live, who was four months old, likewise merited this and kissed the Torah scroll, etc. EN: I also drew spiritual vitality from having purchased, for a few grushim, the honors of taking out and returning the Torah scroll, hagbah [lifting the scroll], and gelilah [rolling and dressing it]. I yearn greatly to fulfill these mitzvos, in view of what I saw in the writings of the Arizal concerning the greatness of their significance, and in accordance with how I myself sense the greatness and vitality of every mitzvah, which is eternal happiness, etc. EN: Baruch Hashem, nearly two years have passed since I came to live in the Old City. I observed in our beis midrash that on Rosh Chodesh Adar they sold the honors of hagbah and gelilah for one grush, and likewise the opening of the Ark and the taking out and returning of the Torah scroll for one grush. I thought that this was only for a single Shabbos. I asked the people, and they told me that the purchase was for two months (and that it could also be bought jointly with another person). I was astounded to hear this, and intense yearning and longing seized me - especially since, for a single grush, I could merit fulfilling hagbah and gelilah for two months: on Shabbos morning and at Minchah, on Mondays and Thursdays, on Rosh Chodesh, etc. EN: The Gemara states that the one who rolls the Torah scroll is accorded a status equivalent to all those who were called to the Torah, and receives reward equal to all of theirs. The writings of the Arizal likewise speak of the great significance of lifting the Torah scroll and displaying its script to the congregation: a great light is drawn upon anyone who gazes at the writing until he is able to read it, etc. I therefore yearned with all my heart and soul to merit these mitzvos. Yet it was already too late, for they had already been sold. No one had purchased them, however; the gabbai himself had bought them and would confer the honor at one time upon this person and at another time upon that person, etc. EN: I waited with longing eyes until those two months had passed. Then, on Rosh Chodesh Iyar, I merited purchasing hagbah and gelilah for one and a half grushim (because, as is customary, I raised the bid). I rejoiced over this as though I had gained a fortune, for my son and I had begun to merit this mitzvah: I performed hagbah, and my son performed gelilah (because one person cannot do both). On Shavuos, when two Torah scrolls were read, my son and I performed these honors as above for one scroll. For the second scroll, I accorded the honors to a rabbi from among our fellowship in Poland, a friend of mine, and to my friend Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh from Russia. EN: Books state that the mitzvah a person longs to perform is a sign that the root of his neshama has an affinity with that mitzvah, and that he must exert himself to fulfill it, etc. I therefore thought that, as long as I am able to seize the mitzvah and purchase it, I will do so. EN: This continued for me until Tishray. Afterward it became somewhat difficult for me to purchase the honors, because it was then the Days of Awe and the festivals, and each festival was sold separately. Yet on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan I purchased them again. This continued for half a year, until Rosh Chodesh Nissan, when it had already become difficult because competitors raised the price. I therefore devised the solution of taking the honors jointly with them. EN: That summer I went through all the writings of the Arizal, and I then saw the greatness of the spiritual rectifications effected through opening the Ark, etc. From then on I also developed a longing for this honor. This was especially so because the Shulchan Aruch and other works state that, when a woman enters the ninth month of pregnancy, her husband should purchase the opening of the Ark until after she gives birth, as a segulah for a delivery without difficult labor. This was another reason for me at that time, and I purchased that honor jointly as well. EN: On Sukkos I likewise purchased hagbah jointly, while on this Simchas Torah I purchased it myself. My son and I performed some of the honors ourselves, while I accorded some to others. I also derived vitality, joy, and gladness from the Simchas Torah hakafos, which we conducted with great joy. My sons and I merited, for the most part, to hold the Torah scroll during most of the seven hakafos. EN: After the Torah reading, when Yizkor was recited, we left the beis midrash, as is customary for those whose father and mother are living. When they reached Av HaRachamim, we returned. They then recited E-l Malei Rachamim for all those who had been killed amid the destruction in Poland, etc., with profound fervor and hot tears. Our hearts were deeply broken within us over the devastation and ruin wrought in Poland - the principal body of Klal Yisrael - and particularly over the members of our fellowship, of whom we knew nothing whatsoever. EN: I in particular - how my innards churned and my heart broke within me! I had personally known the entire country, its people, and all the members of our fellowship face to face. There had been great closeness and an intense love between us, and they continually stood before my eyes. What had now become of them? EN: Thus all the Days of Awe certainly passed for me amid immense and burning weeping, with torrents of tears whenever I remembered this - especially on Yom Kippur, and particularly during the recitation of the Ten Martyrs, etc., and the plea for vengeance upon our enemies, with tremendous fervor. EN: Afterward we went to the Western Wall to pray Mussaf together and to make the customary festival pilgrimage. There too we prayed with intense fervor and deep bitterness over our not meriting to enter within and perform the service in the Beis HaMikdash, and particularly over the recent destructions mentioned above. I therefore remained at the Wall for a long time in prayer, supplication, and an awakening from the depths of the heart. EN: My son was also there and prayed Mussaf, as did the other members of our fellowship. They finished quickly, however, and went to the kiddush celebrations for the chassanim - namely, the Chassan Torah and Chassan Bereishis. I remained behind with several other members of our fellowship, and we prolonged our prayers, yearnings, hisbodedus [secluded personal prayer], and spiritual fervor, etc. Afterward I began walking back, climbing upward on foot. I intended to join the members of our fellowship at their kiddush celebrations and rejoice together with them. EN: On the way, I thought to myself: Baruch Hashem, the Days of Awe and the sacred seasons have already passed, and a new year is beginning. I considered how to renew myself in the service of Hashem, with an established order (for during the Days of Awe and the holy festivals one departs from the personal order of service one has established, since one generally serves together with the congregation, etc.; whereas I very much love the service I perform by myself, without disturbances and confusions from others, etc.), and with fresh vitality and joy. EN: I was as filled with joy as one who had won a war. Baruch Hashem, those holy days had passed, and we had seized in them whatever we had seized. While they had not yet passed, one worries: Who knows whether we will merit to seize what we should, conduct ourselves through them as required, and pray with spiritual fervor, etc.? But once, Baruch Hashem, they had passed and we had seized in them whatever we had seized, one rejoices greatly over having merited it. In my mind I was preparing an order of divine service for the new year, with vitality and joy, and considering how to spend the winter nights as one should. EN: After the Yom Tov meal I went with my son to the Western Wall. We prayed Minchah and recited Psalms and prayers. In the meantime I learned that the Sephardic sages at Yeshivas Porat Yosef would conduct hakafos once again toward evening, with great joy. I spoke with several members of our fellowship about going to rejoice with them, and so we did. We came there, prayed Maariv, and afterward they recited Havdalah. They then honored us with taking out the Torah scrolls, which were housed in their silver cases. EN: We conducted the hakafos with great joy and danced to Sephardic dances and melodies, Ashkenazic dances and melodies, and every kind of song and tune. We even turned ourselves over, in what was called "iber-kallin," engaged in comic merriment, and exchanged garments: they put on our shtreimels, while we put on their kashketlach [cloth caps]. In sum, we entered genuinely into joy and song for four or five uninterrupted hours, until I had quite literally gone beyond my normal bounds and felt no embarrassment at dancing in every possible manner. We continued in this way until midnight.
