EN: Immediately after the festival of Pesach, R. Avraham began to speak of the fact that the sense of spiritual vitality in Meron, at the tomb of Rashbi—may his merit protect us—is exceedingly great; that the place lies outside settled habitation and is very conducive to the service of Hashem; and that Rabbainu’s works describe the great importance of being with, and journeying to, a true tzadik on Rosh Hashanah. Since it was impossible to travel to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, he maintained that no place was as good and choice in every respect as Meron, and so forth. EN: This idea entered his mind deeply, and he began discussing it with the young men of our fellowship in the Old City and arousing them to it. He also spoke to me about it and urged me toward it. After all, I, R. Yisrael Dov, R. Alter Ben-Tzion, and R. Yaakov Zev had been together in Meron for Rosh Hashanah several times at the beginning of my drawing near; R. Yisrael of Kardan, of blessed memory, had in his final years always been in Meron, even for Rosh Hashanah; and R. Alter Ben-Tzion had traveled to Meron for Rosh Hashanah even when the large gathering in Jerusalem had already been established, and so forth. EN: In sum, he demonstrated the matter before my eyes and proved to me with arguments that nothing could surpass it. I answered him that, notwithstanding all this, it was not proper to divide the gathering and create a separation of hearts, so that the other members of our fellowship would say that we were separating ourselves from them, and so forth. When we had been in Meron for Rosh Hashanah, there had not yet been such a gathering in Jerusalem; from then until now I had been scrupulous in this respect—to be among the gathering in Jerusalem on Rosh Hashanah, almost as one would be in Uman on Rosh Hashanah, and so forth. EN: I attempted to remove the idea from his mind, but he turned to the young men mentioned above, aroused them to travel to Meron for Rosh Hashanah, and showed them several passages in the words of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and in the words of Moharnat in Likutay Halachos concerning the greatness of Rosh Hashanah in the presence of true tzadikim, and so forth. EN: His words began to influence the young men, whose desire was to practice hisbodedus in places outside settled habitation, and all the more so to be in Meron for the Days of Awe. R. Yisrael Dov also related that he had heard from R. Yisrael of Kardan, of blessed memory, that since it was impossible to travel to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, it was clear to him that one ought to be in Meron for Rosh Hashanah. The elders, however, opposed this, as did all the other members of our fellowship, with the exception of those young men. They were unanimously of the view that it was not proper to disturb the Rosh Hashanah arrangement: for several years people had assembled in Jerusalem for Rosh Hashanah from throughout the Land of Israel, and, ben porat Yosef, the multitude was very large. It was not proper to separate from them. They also brought proofs that one must travel to the largest gathering, and so forth. EN: In sum, arguments began among the members of our fellowship: one said thus and another said otherwise. I myself remained evenly balanced in my judgment; at one moment one view entered my mind, and at another moment its opposite, for there were reasoned arguments on both sides. One could truthfully say that on Rosh Hashanah one must be with the members of our fellowship. Rabbainu, of blessed memory, said: “Rosh Hashanah is mine. Hashem gave it to me as a gift; it did not come to me as an inheritance from my fathers, and it is an entirely new thing,” and so forth. Accordingly, one must certainly be with Rabbainu alone on Rosh Hashanah; and when that is impossible, one should at least be together with members of our fellowship who cleave to Rabbainu, believing that Rabbainu is together with them. Moreover, there are Jerusalem, the Temple, and the Western Wall, from which the Shechinah has never departed; “all who are inscribed for life in Jerusalem”; and the whole prayer of Rosh Hashanah concerns Jerusalem and the sovereignty of Hashem, and so forth. EN: Conversely, one could say that when it is impossible to be in Uman, one should at least be in Meron with Rashbi—may his merit protect us—for he is the true tzadik, the aspect of Shabbos, who radiates toward the Temple, and so forth. All the more so is this indicated in the lesson “Chadi R. Shimon,” in which Rabbainu, of blessed memory, discusses traveling to tzadikim on Rosh Hashanah. They are the encompassing intellect, the Holy of Holies, and the Foundation Stone, and through them all constrictions and judgments are sweetened, and so forth. There Rabbainu specifically cites the Idra Rabba of R. Shimon on the statement “Chadi R. Shimon,” and explains that this is the matter of R. Shimon and his companions, who constituted the rectification of the disciples of R. Akiva; R. Shimon said, “We depend upon love,” and so forth. This lesson thus proves that it is a great matter to be with R. Shimon on Rosh Hashanah. EN: On the other hand, the Zohar indicates that on Rosh Hashanah it is more fitting to be among a large congregation. It cites the Shunammite woman, who drew Elisha near and prepared a chamber for him, and so forth. Elisha asked whether she required anything, saying to her, “Would you have a word spoken for you to the king?” The Zohar explains that this was Rosh Hashanah—for wherever Scripture says, “And it came to pass on the day,” it refers to Rosh Hashanah—when the entire world is judged, and so forth. Elisha asked whether she wished him to speak on her behalf to the King, the King of the universe, and to advocate favorably for her. She answered him, “I dwell among my own people”: she did not wish him to mention her name individually, for that would be a great danger to her, but only to remain “among my people,” amid the multitude, for “God is mighty and does not despise.” If her name were mentioned individually, who knew what might become of her? EN: If she preferred to remain among the multitude and not have even so great a prophet as Elisha—one of the greatest prophets—mention her name, it follows that it is better to be among the many, and so forth. In sum, there were proofs in both directions, and I could not arrive at a clear halakhic determination for myself as to where the truth lay. I thought that there was not yet any practical ruling to make, because it was highly probable that the members of our fellowship would persuade R. Avraham to remain in Jerusalem for Rosh Hashanah; and even if they did not persuade him, if he had no minyan he would be compelled to remain in Jerusalem. EN: In sum, the members of our fellowship took action in this matter and appealed to R. Avraham. Some also said that they would make peace between him and R.Y.M., and so forth. They likewise spoke at length with the young men who desired this journey and argued extensively with them. In sum, there were many disputes over the matter: those on this side argued and advanced reasons in one direction, while those on the other side argued and advanced contrary reasons. Many stood undecided and could not weigh the matter in their minds, and so forth. EN: In sum, there was discussion and disputation over this by day and by night, and so forth. There was only one consolation: much time remained until Rosh Hashanah; perhaps they would yet reconsider and stay in Jerusalem. Throughout this period, however, both sides exerted themselves to prevail. R. Avraham, may his light shine, endeavored to prove to several people that they specifically ought to travel; indeed, all the members of our fellowship should travel, just as people traveled on Lag BaOmer and as they had traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, leaving their households and everything else and going entirely away from home, and so forth. EN: The opposing side, however, proved the contrary: this was exceedingly difficult, for some people were weak and could not break their frail bodies by wandering about during such awesome days, all the more so in a desolate wilderness; in Uman, by contrast, there had been lodgings, and so forth. Moreover, there was no obligation whatsoever to travel to Meron for Rosh Hashanah. R. Shimon had not commanded people to journey to him; R. Shimon’s special occasion was Lag BaOmer, as R. Shimon, of blessed memory, himself had said that Lag BaOmer was his day, the day of his rejoicing and his own hillula, and so forth. EN: The writings of the Arizal, of blessed memory, state that it is a mitzvah to travel to R. Shimon on Lag BaOmer, but nowhere is it stated that one should travel to Meron on Rosh Hashanah. In Rabbainu’s works, the principal meaning of traveling to the tzadik is traveling to Rabbainu, for this matter belongs to him, and so forth. Indeed, by traveling to Meron they would create the impression that the same rectifications are effected there as in Uman. People would cease to feel the absence of Uman and the journey there, and even if it again became possible to travel, they might discharge themselves through this substitute, and so forth. EN: In sum, major divisions of opinion arose among the members of our fellowship concerning this matter, and almost all of them spoke about it. Only the young men, the newly drawn adherents, seized upon the proposal of traveling to Meron for Rosh Hashanah as one who finds great spoil, for the place was convenient for their service of Hashem, as stated above.
