EN: How greatly we suffered from the children’s eye disease, as stated above! For a long period we went to Dr. Ticho twice every day at considerable expense, in addition to the anguish and suffering and the sleep that fled from our eyes as we forcibly washed the children’s eyes every ten minutes. We then prevailed upon the doctor to prepare a prescription for us to use at home, so that we would administer the drops ourselves and take the children to the doctor only once every two days. EN: We then merited to reach the holy Shabbos of Parshas Reeh, on which Rosh Chodesh Elul was blessed. I naturally conducted myself as I did on every Shabbos Mevarchim, and we went to the Western Wall to pray Mussaf. There was certainly a large congregation, as on every Shabbos Mevarchim, and especially on the Shabbos on which Rosh Chodesh Elul is blessed. At that time the entire world is aroused—men, women, and children—and they go to the holy places to prepare themselves for the sacred and awesome days that are approaching, and so forth. EN: I certainly did everything within my ability to prepare myself for the holy month of Elul. I studied Rabbainu’s works and the matter of the kavanos of Elul, and so forth, as well as the other prescribed studies customarily learned during Elul, such as Tikkunay Zohar, Tanach, and the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. EN: On Monday of Parshas Shoftim, the eve of Rosh Chodesh Elul, people spoke of traveling to Hebron, to the Cave of Machpelah. On the eve of Rosh Chodesh Sivan I had seen people traveling to Hebron, but I had been unable to go because of my son’s illness and had been compelled to go to the hospital to be with him. I had then vowed that when he recovered I would travel to Hebron. My wife had likewise vowed to travel to Hebron, to the tombs of the Patriarchs, but throughout the intervening period we had been unable to fulfill our vows. EN: The eve of Rosh Chodesh Elul is a time when everyone gathers, and very many people travel then. Especially in such a period, when there was fear and danger from the enemy, people would certainly raise a great outcry in prayer at the holy places. It was announced that guards would be posted both along the road and at the site. I resolved to travel, and my wife likewise said that she would go. Although the children were suffering from their eyes and required supervision and treatment, she nevertheless strengthened herself to fulfill our vows, for “if not now, when?” During the rest of the year travel was difficult, since scarcely anyone made the journey. EN: After the prayer service we hastened to set out. We took our son Aharon, may his light shine, with us, and left my eldest son, may his light shine, at home to watch over the children. We promised him that we would hurry as much as possible to return home. My wife took a bottle of olive oil to kindle at Rachel’s Tomb, as she had undertaken in her vow. EN: We arrived at Jaffa Gate, where the buses stood. We were the first people wishing to travel to Hebron and found no Jews who would travel with us, so we boarded an Arab bus bound for Hebron. Later a Jewish woman from Tel Aviv and several men also arrived, and we traveled on the bus among all the other non-Jews, and so forth. My wife had brought food with her and gave some to our son Aharon, may his light shine. We also recited Tefillas HaDerech. Our hearts were somewhat afraid to travel alone, but we knew that before long many Jews would certainly arrive, and so forth. EN: We wished to alight at Rachel’s Tomb along the way and pray there briefly, but the driver refused to stop and said that we would alight at Rachel’s Tomb on the return journey. We therefore continued to Hebron. When we arrived, the vermin threw stones at us. We then walked to the Cave of Machpelah through the narrow, dark alleyways, greatly afraid that the non-Jews might harm us. EN: We nevertheless walked swiftly and energetically, so that they would have no time to take counsel, and so forth. Thank God, we traversed the road to the Cave of Machpelah safely, though in fear. When we arrived, the non-Jews would not permit us to enter the courtyard until we paid them. We gave them half a grush for each person, and they allowed us to enter. We entered the courtyard, ascended the few steps that visitors were permitted to climb, and stood beside the wall. There is a deep aperture there into which written petitions are placed, and so forth. EN: Their vile fellows, however, did not allow us to say anything, for they harassed us severely—especially our son Aharon, may his light shine, and most particularly my wife, may she live. They inflicted great suffering upon us, threw stones, and tugged at our clothing. We endured much anguish and severe suffering. Nevertheless, we did what was incumbent upon us: we recited Tehillim and offered heartfelt petitions at the Cave of Machpelah, with weeping and supplication. EN: They continued doing what they did, afflicting us with anguish and suffering that penetrated to the soul. My wife in particular was tormented, and they cast a snake at her feet. She paid no attention to any of it and continued doing her part in supplication and petition. When the woman from Tel Aviv saw our distress and suffering, she feared for her life and pleaded with us to leave. We were unwilling, because it would have been a loss to depart so quickly after coming there, and we refused to go. The woman mentioned above became terribly frightened; she paid an Arab guide to conduct her to the bus so that she could return to Jerusalem. I remained there alone with my wife and our son Aharon, may his light shine. EN: The intensity of the anguish and suffering inflicted upon us by those vile people cannot be estimated. They subjected us to every kind of distress and did not permit us to say anything. I stood against them and would not yield. The bottle of olive oil that we had taken for Rachel’s Tomb was also broken. Nevertheless, amid anguish and suffering we did what was ours to do and did not abandon it. On the contrary, we strengthened and fortified ourselves in prayer, weeping, and supplication, with force and courage, while they continually interfered with us, provoked us, and afflicted us to the very soul.
