Segment 1
HE:
והנה כן סבלנו באלו הימים מכאב עיניה, וכן ביום ראשון הלכה גם כן בעצמה בכובד וקושי גדול להד״ר טיכו והוא משח לה את עיניה וכו׳, וכן חזרה אחר כך בגודל צערה וכאבה, וממש היה צער גדול לראותה בהליכתה, וכמה אנשים רצו לסייעה להוליכה אבל לא רצתה מטעם הנ״ל, כי יותר טוב עבורה שתלך בעצמה ותהיה מוכרחת לפקוח עיניה, אבל באתה בהכאב והצער וחולי העיניים, יותר מקודם, וסבילת הצער ונדידת השינה לרחוץ העניים ביום ובלילה.

Thus we continued to suffer during those days from the pain in her eyes. On Sunday, too, she walked by herself, with immense heaviness and difficulty, to Dr. Ticho, who applied ointment to her eyes, and so forth. She afterward returned amid her severe distress and pain. It was truly agonizing to watch her walk. Several people wished to assist by leading her, but she refused for the reason stated above: it was better for her to walk by herself, so that she would be compelled to open her eyes. Yet she returned with still greater pain, anguish, and eye disease than before; and we endured the suffering and loss of sleep required to bathe her eyes by day and by night.

וכן ביום השני פרשת תצא הלכ גם כן להד״ר טיכו, בקושי גדול שהלכה עד שם, ובנסים שהאטומובילים לא דרסוה, וכמה זמן שבלתה שם עד שמשח לה את עיניה, ואחר כך חזרה ביסוריה וכאביה, ולא הועיל לה כלל כי לא הוטבו עיניה כלל מזה.

EN:
On Monday of Parshas Ki Saitzai she likewise went to Dr. Ticho. It was with great difficulty that she walked all the way there, and only by miracles did the automobiles not run her over. She remained there a considerable time until he applied ointment to her eyes, and then returned amid her suffering and pain. It did not benefit her at all, for her eyes did not improve in the slightest as a result.

Segment 3
HE:
ואין לשער ולהעריך גודל צערינו מההתאוננות ובכיות שלה, כי היא ח״ו כבר נחלטה כך בעיניה, ואמרה שלנו יותר קשה מלה כי לשמש אשה עורת בוודאי קשה, והיתה מאוננות ובוכה עלינו יומם ולילה, מלבד הצער והטרחה לשמש עבורה ואת כל הבית.

EN:
The magnitude of our anguish at her lamenting and weeping cannot be estimated or appraised. She believed that the condition of her eyes had already become permanent, God forbid, and said that our lot was more difficult than hers, since it would certainly be difficult to tend a blind woman. She lamented and wept over us day and night, apart from the anguish and labor of tending her and the entire household.

Segment 4

בפרט בימים הקדושים כאלו שצריך להרבות בעבודת השם ובהליכה על מקומות הקדושים, ובפרט כי קרוב לימי ראש השנה הקדושים ובדעתי מתנוצץ אולי לנסוע על ראש השנה למירון, ומפני זה בוודאי לא אוכל לנסוע.

EN:
This was especially painful during such holy days, when one must increase the service of Hashem and visits to the holy places. Moreover, the sacred days of Rosh Hashanah were approaching, and the possibility of traveling to Meron for Rosh Hashanah would flash through my mind; because of this illness, however, I would certainly be unable to travel.

Segment 5
HE:
וביום המחרת הלכה עוד הפעם בקושי וצער להד״ר טיכו ומשח עיניה, וביקשה ממנו שיתן לה משחה להבית כדי למשוח עיניה, כי קשה לה מאד לילך כל יום למשוח עיניה וכו׳, וכן הוה שנתן לה טפות להטיף בבית, וכן עבר אלו הימים ולא הוטב לה העיניים כלל אדרבא סבלה באלו הימים יותר ויותר.

EN:
On the following day she again went to Dr. Ticho with difficulty and anguish, and he applied ointment to her eyes. She asked him to give her an ointment to take home so that she could treat her eyes there, since it was exceedingly difficult for her to walk to him each day to have the ointment applied, and so forth. He did so and gave her drops to instill at home. These days passed, yet her eyes did not improve at all; on the contrary, she suffered increasingly from day to day.

Segment 6

ולא ידענו מה לעשות, עד שהיתה אחותה אצלה לבקרה ודיברה אליה אולי תעזוב את תרופות ומשחות ד״ר טיכו, ותעשה תרופת הטיפות השחורות שאביה הלא הוא חותני ז״ל נתן לו רופא גדול מלפני שנים רבות התרופה הזאת, וקורין זאת "דאס שווארצע וואסעריל", ואמר שיועיל לכל מיני עיניים ואינו מזיק, ומאז היו זורקים אלו הטיפות בכל מיני עיניים רעים לגדולים וקטנים והועיל להם.

We did not know what to do. Then her sister came to visit and suggested that perhaps she should discontinue Dr. Ticho’s medicines and ointments and instead use the remedy of the black drops. Many years earlier, a distinguished physician had given this remedy to her father—my father-in-law, of blessed memory. It was called “the little black water.” The physician had said that it would benefit every kind of eye ailment and could do no harm. From that time onward they had placed these drops into every sort of diseased eye, whether of adults or children, and the drops had helped them.

Segment 7

והכלל שהלכה עם אחותה לאביה ודברו ביחד אולי ליקח אלו הטיפות, וכן עשו ולקחו בבית מרקחת אלו הטיפות, והביאה לבית והתחלנו להטיף הטיפות בעיניה, ועברו איזה ימים והתחיל להטיב יותר והכאב ירד תיכף, והעיניים התחילו להטיב מעט מעט, אבל עדיין לא ראתה על העיניים, וכבר גמרה אצלה בדעתה כי לא תראה עוד על העיניים ח״ו, אבל אני אמרתי לה כי מצפה אני להשי״ת כי ירפא אותה לגמרי, וכי תראה עוד על העיניים כמקודם, והיא היתה מתאוננת ובוכה וקובלת על זה וכו׳.

In sum, she went with her sister to their father, and they discussed whether she should take these drops. They did so: they obtained the drops from a pharmacy, she brought them home, and we began instilling them in her eyes. After several days her condition began to improve. The pain subsided immediately, and the eyes gradually grew somewhat better. She still could not see with them, however, and had already concluded in her own mind that she would never see again, God forbid. I told her that I looked to Hashem to heal her completely and that she would yet see with her eyes as she had before. She continued lamenting, weeping, and complaining over this, and so forth.
