EN: Thank God, the week of Parshas Ki Saitzai passed and Parshas Ki Savoa arrived, and her eyes had improved: the pain had ceased, as had the heat and the discharge from her eyes. She treated them only with the black drops mentioned above. Her vision had still not improved; nevertheless, if I wished to travel to Meron for Rosh Hashanah, something that had been altogether impossible because of her eye disease, this obstacle had now diminished, since her eyes had improved. EN: Yet the mental obstacles and doubts I experienced regarding this matter were without measure. We still thought of conciliating R. Avraham, may his light shine, in the hope that he would consent not to travel to Meron and not break apart the Rosh Hashanah gathering in Jerusalem. I spoke with him at length, but to no avail. Members of our fellowship from Shaarei Chesed afterward spoke with him and promised him money for leading the prayer service, but that too was of no avail, and he did not promise them that he would refrain from traveling. Only the newly drawn young men fortified and encouraged him to travel, and so forth. EN: Nevertheless, throughout this period we thought that in the end R. Avraham would reconsider and not travel. We assumed that his insistence was merely a competitive maneuver intended to induce us to increase his remuneration for leading the prayers, but that in truth he would not go. He spoke with all the young men and sounded them out as to whether they would travel with him to Meron, and so forth. He also spoke with R. Yaakov Zev, asking whether he might travel, serve as the baal tokeia and lead Shacharis, for which he would be paid; but R. Yaakov Zev was unwilling, and so forth. EN: I myself said neither yes nor no, for I could not incline my judgment either affirmatively or negatively. I possessed arguments in one direction and arguments in the opposite direction; my judgment was evenly balanced, and I could decide neither way. I spoke at length with members of our fellowship, especially with each of those who had been in Uman and possessed a feeling for Rabbainu’s Rosh Hashanah. I attempted to incline their hearts toward making the journey, arguing that travel was good for several reasons: the isolation from the world, the influence of the place itself, and Rabbainu’s words concerning traveling to tzadikim on Rosh Hashanah, and so forth. EN: They held firmly to their position: Rosh Hashanah is Rabbainu’s distinctive matter, and one must travel only to him. It was given to him as a gift from Hashem and was not an inheritance from his fathers, and so forth, as recorded in Chayay Moharan. Rashbi’s distinctive occasion, by contrast, is Lag BaOmer. Moreover, the entire gathering was specifically in Jerusalem—“all who are inscribed for life in Jerusalem”—and so forth. EN: In sum, they were of one mind that one specifically ought not to travel, and so forth. The choicest course, they said, would be to spend the eve of Rosh Hashanah in Meron, prostrate oneself at the tomb of Rashbi—may his merit protect us—and then return to Jerusalem for Rosh Hashanah and join the gathering. Even if one specifically wished to spend sacred and awesome days with Rashbi—may his merit protect us—one could do so on Yom Kippur. In this manner one would gain both advantages: one would be together with the great gathering, with Rabbainu among us, as Rabbainu said, “When you are together, I shall be with you,” and so forth; and one would also merit to spend such a sacred and awesome day—Yom Kippur—in Meron with Rashbi, may his merit protect us. This was the position expressed to me by most members of our fellowship who had been in Uman and possessed a feeling for Rosh Hashanah, with whom I spoke and debated the matter. EN: For my own part, I still could not weigh the matter and decide one way or the other. Could this understanding alone of Rabbainu’s words concerning Rosh Hashanah outweigh all the service of Hashem I might gain there—the prayer with intent, and so forth? It was true that I could perform those things at another time rather than during the gathering; yet in practice I did not do so at another time, because of the obstacles posed by the strain of the journey and by being displaced while there. At present it would be easier, since there would be a group and companionship together, and so forth. EN: In sum, I then began arguing from the opposite side. I spoke with those who intended to travel, trying to persuade them not to go and debating with them, and so forth. They, however, held firmly that one specifically had to travel, and so forth. I remained bewildered in my judgment, my thoughts balanced this way and that, and so forth. I did not know what counsel to take within my soul or what to do, and so forth. Throughout all those days I went about bewildered, uncertain what course to follow. EN: For example, all the reasons proving that one ought to travel and that it would be exceedingly good to do so would enter my mind, and I would resolve to travel. The very next moment my judgment would reverse completely and I would decide specifically not to travel, and so forth; thereafter it would turn back once more. I had no repose of mind concerning the matter. Many other members of our fellowship likewise could not settle their minds, which moved back and forth, and so forth.
