EN: Thus the weeks of the month of Elul passed amid thoughts and deliberations. At that time we prayed every day in the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah. Two years earlier, because of the disturbances and fear in the city, as well as the special nighttime conditions—the curfew—we had been unable to pray in our own beis midrash. We had therefore begun praying in the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah, since it was closer to Batei Machseh. EN: During the days of Selichos we specifically prayed in the second building of the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah. I argued with them repeatedly and spoke at length, maintaining that the building was small and not as attractive as the yeshivah itself, and so forth. They persisted in their view: the yeshivah had no women’s section; its lavatory was inadequate, and so forth; and, above all, people would not come from all the cities of the Land of Israel because the roads were dangerous, and so forth, so that even this building would be large enough for the prayer service. EN: Thank God, however, I succeeded in having the Days of Awe prayers held specifically in the yeshivah itself, for representations of all the holy places and the graves of tzadikim were painted there. Rabbainu, of blessed memory, explains in Likutay Moharan II, Lesson 1, that Hashem fills the entire world and that place does not apply to Him; nevertheless, He constricted His Shechinah into the Temple because beautiful things were present there—the designs of the Mishkan corresponding to the design of the work of Creation. What things could be more beautiful than the holy places of the Land of Israel and the graves of its tzadikim? All our welfare and spiritual vitality depend upon them, and during these days all our reliance rests upon them, and so forth. EN: The yeshivah itself was also spacious, good, and attractive. The building mentioned above, by contrast, was narrow and had different levels, so that some people were compelled to stand above and others below. In sum, I prevailed, and throughout all the Days of Awe we prayed specifically in the yeshivah. On Rosh Hashanah many members of our fellowship came with self-sacrifice even from Tel Aviv, together with all the members of our fellowship in Jerusalem, and the entire yeshivah was filled from wall to wall—ben porat Yosef. There was some distress because the few women had to remain near the entrance, as no women’s section existed. My wife, may she live, prayed in a nearby house from which the entire service could be heard. EN: On Yom Kippur, too, the yeshivah was filled from wall to wall, for all the members of our fellowship throughout Jerusalem came to pray together. We likewise prayed in the yeshivah during Sukkos. On Hoshana Rabbah the disturbances occurred: the Arabs laid siege to the city from every side, and gunfire poured upon us from every direction, and so forth. Hashem later helped, quiet was restored, and we were able to return to our own beis midrash. EN: A division of opinion then arose. Some members of our fellowship held that we should now continue praying in the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah, since it was near; what need had we of our own beis midrash, which was surrounded by brazen, uncircumcised forces of impurity, and so forth? Other, older members of our fellowship said that we must not abandon our beis midrash, for it possessed several important advantages. If we abandoned it, others would take it and we would be left bald on both sides: the yeshivah did not belong to us at all and its proprietors could expel us whenever they wished, while others would seize our beis midrash if we ceased praying there, and so forth. EN: The members of our fellowship in the city consequently divided. On Shabbos the elders among them prayed in our beis midrash, while the younger and newly drawn men prayed with R. Avraham in the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah, for they did not wish to abandon the yeshivah entirely. This continued for a considerable period. Many times those on one side wished to go here and those on the other wished to go there, and they moved back and forth from one place to the other, until a compromise was reached: on weekdays they would pray in the yeshivah, and on Shabbos and Yom Tov in our beis midrash. For Rosh Hashanah they intended to pray in the yeshivah, as in the previous year. EN: I warned R.G., one of the members of our fellowship, that the place would be too confined. Together with R.G. I went to the home of R. Michel Tukachinsky. The walk caused me distress, because identity papers were being inspected along the road and I did not have my identity card with me; it was at home. It was already the eve of Rosh Hashanah, and I feared that they might detain me and thereby cause me anguish on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. EN: Nevertheless, I paid no heed to this and went with R.G. to the Etz Chaim neighborhood. Thank God, we were not detained along the way. When we arrived at R. Michel’s home, they refused to allow us to enter because he lay gravely ill upon his sickbed. We insisted that we had to see him personally concerning an urgent matter, and at last we prevailed and were admitted. We told him that we desired permission to conduct the holy Rosh Hashanah prayers in the Etz Chaim Yeshivah in the courtyard of the Churvas Rabbi Yehudah HeChasid in the Old City, as we had done two years earlier and before that. He refused to consent, and we nearly departed from him in dejection. EN: Nevertheless, we pleaded with him and said that in the merit of granting this permission he would be healed, and so forth. With great difficulty we prevailed upon him to agree on the following condition: several members of our fellowship who studied in the Etz Chaim Yeshivah were to give him a written undertaking accepting responsibility for all the yeshivah’s property, so that nothing would be missing or damaged, and promising that the key would be returned after Rosh Hashanah. If we supplied this, he would permit us to pray there, and so forth. We answered that this was satisfactory, blessed him with a favorable inscription and a complete recovery, and left him joyfully. EN: He then called us back and said, “Why should I trouble you to come to me yet again?” He wrote us a note instructing the person who held the key to give us the yeshivah key so that we could pray there on Rosh Hashanah, subject to the condition that he receive from us the written undertaking mentioned above. We joyfully accepted the note, thanked him, and traversed the road home safely. EN: Thank God, the congregation was large on Rosh Hashanah, and we prayed there throughout Rosh Hashanah. On Yom Kippur we prayed in our beis midrash. Thus, on Shabbos and Yom Tov we prayed in our beis midrash, while on weekdays and on the evenings of Shabbos and Yom Tov we prayed in the Shaarei Shamayim Yeshivah mentioned above. During that year we likewise prayed there throughout Elul. This year, too, although I thought that I might be in Meron, I nevertheless exerted myself so that the Rosh Hashanah prayers could again be held in the Etz Chaim Yeshivah as in the previous year, on the same condition that they accept responsibility, and so forth.
