EN: One young man who had traveled with us returned to Jerusalem early on the morning of the eve of Rosh Hashanah. I weighed in my mind what I should do—whether to remain or to return to Jerusalem as I had promised at home, as stated above. Yet I feared: how could one leave a gathering of members of our fellowship beside the tzadik Rashbi—may his merit protect us—and travel away? EN: There was especially the strain of traveling on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. The entire eve of Rosh Hashanah would pass without the service of Hashem, amid nothing but confusion from the exertion of the journey. Who knew what obstacles and confusions the Adversary might prepare for me along the road? Furthermore, R. Avraham, may his light shine, would be filled with anger and resentment against me for leaving them on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and traveling away, and so forth. EN: I also considered that, in truth, because of my weakness and illness it was much more comfortable for me specifically to remain in Meron for Rosh Hashanah. In Jerusalem it was exceedingly difficult for me to pray the long Rosh Hashanah services, and so forth. In Meron everything was near: the mikveh, the holy tomb, and the place where we prayed, ate, and slept. EN: For all these reasons I resolved to remain in Meron for Rosh Hashanah. If I returned and the sufferings mentioned above overwhelmed me, I would certainly regret it and bite my own flesh, asking why I had not remained in Meron. EN: In sum, I remained. We visited the holy places mentioned above, and on the eve of Rosh Hashanah I experienced joy and spiritual vitality and was pleased that I had stayed. After the services described above I ate a small meal. In accordance with our custom, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah we fast until after midday; I then ate a piece of bread and a piece of fish that I had received from R. Yisrael Dov. EN: I afterward prepared myself by putting on my Yom Tov garments and shtreimel, and performed my service beside the holy tomb of Rashbi—may his merit protect us. Once again I recited the Tikkun HaKlali with weeping and the pouring out of my conversation; the prayer concerning Rashbi from Likutay Tefillos; the prayers for the general pidyon; and the pidyon itself. I also gave several members of our fellowship money so that they would perform a pidyon on my behalf, as Sichos HaRan states that it is fitting to give money for a pidyon on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Several members of our fellowship likewise asked me to perform a pidyon for them. I recited other prayers for Rosh Hashanah and poured out my conversation and my heart in hisbodedus. EN: R. Avraham urged everyone to hasten so that we could pray Minchah while the day was still well advanced but before evening. This was the custom in Uman, where the Minchah of the eve of Rosh Hashanah was prayed while much of the day remained. Several hours were spent over that Minchah, with abundant spiritual awakening and weeping; whatever one had not completed throughout the day was completed then, and so forth. As Rabbainu, of blessed memory, said, “The world would wish for a Rosh Hashanah like the eve of Rosh Hashanah among us.” EN: There is certainly great spiritual awakening on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, especially during the final Minchah of the year—the Minchah of the eve of Rosh Hashanah. At that time the past year joins the beginning of the coming year. The entire preceding year is rectified on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, for it is the final day of that year, and one day within a year is accounted as a year. EN: Rosh Hashanah itself is the head of the entire coming year, and the head is the principal thing. The entire year follows the manner in which one sanctifies its head and beginning; therefore, every first portion is holy to Hashem, and so forth. We would certainly have prayed Minchah much earlier on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. People, however, were unaccustomed to this, and R. Avraham Baruch in particular opposed it, wishing us to pray as on every eve of Shabbos and eve of Yom Tov—close to evening. R. Avraham nevertheless paid no heed to them and urged us to hasten. Although we did not begin quite as early as he desired, we nevertheless stood to pray two hours before evening. EN: The other men—R. Avraham Baruch and R. Asher Zelig—were compelled to set aside their opinion before ours, for we constituted the majority and they would otherwise have remained without any minyan. They therefore prayed early together with us. EN: We began Minchah amid immense spiritual awakening. We commenced by reciting the Ketores with great intent; every section was recited with awakening and occupied some time. R. Avraham, may his light shine, led the prayers with great awakening, following the customary Uman rite and melody, with awakening and intent. The recitation of the offerings alone lasted a considerable time, accompanied by clapping, intent, and great awakening from the congregation, while tears streamed from the eyes of many present. EN: The prayer leader then began “Ashrei” with awakening and intent. The congregation recited the entire psalm of Ashrei word by word, with strength, intent, awakening, clapping, and streaming tears. Its recitation continued for a considerable time. The leader then began, “Righteous is Hashem in all His ways,” and so forth, in melody and with great intent and awakening. Nearly everyone shed tears with awakening until he concluded, “Hallelujah.” EN: He recited Kaddish with great awakening and with the melody described above. The people responded “Amen” and “Amen, yehei Shemei rabba” with great intent and awakening, accompanied by clapping, and so forth. They then began the silent Shemoneh Esrei with intent, awakening, and exertion. Each person clapped amid great noise and awakening. The silent Shemoneh Esrei lasted a long time amid spiritual awakening, abundant clapping, weeping, streaming tears, and an arousal to teshuvah, until we completed it. EN: The prayer leader began the repetition of the Shemoneh Esrei in the Uman melody, with a tearful voice that awakened the mind and with powerful inspiration that aroused teshuvah and tears. Whenever he concluded a blessing, such as “Shield of Avraham,” the congregation clapped thunderously, tears surged, and the people could be heard completing the words together with him. So it was at the beginning and conclusion of every blessing until the Shemoneh Esrei ended. EN: Kaddish was likewise recited with intense awakening, and the responses of “Amen” and “Amen, yehei Shemei rabba” were made amid noise, awakening, and great intent. The entire congregation then recited the psalm “By David: Hashem is my light,” word by word, together, amid noise, great awakening, intent, and weeping, so that its recitation lasted some time. The leader concluded it with the awakening described above; Kaddish was recited with the same intent and awakening; Aleinu was said amid noise and awakening; and the final Kaddish was recited with intent and awakening, and so forth. In sum, the Minchah service extended for several hours amid awakening, teshuvah, and weeping, and so forth. EN: The entire congregation afterward recited the short prayer “Achos Ketanah,” which is said after Minchah on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, amid noise, awakening, and weeping. Every stanza concluded, “May the year and its curses come to an end.” This was especially so with the final stanza, “Be strong and rejoice, for devastation has ended,” whose conclusion is, “May the year and its blessings begin.” It was recited amid noise and awakening and brought the weeping of the eve of Rosh Hashanah to its conclusion. EN: I derived immense satisfaction from my eve of Rosh Hashanah. Apart from the congregation’s awakening described above, I personally spent almost the entire day in spiritual awakening, weeping, the service of Hashem, verbal confession, contemplation, spiritual vitality, and joy. Only during Minchah did the awakening take the form of weeping, with tears streaming from my eyes in remorse and yearning. Whenever I attempted to console myself and halt the tears, they intensified still further. EN: In sum, during those hours of the Minchah service I wept out my heart until my mind and heart were eased from all that had accumulated over the entire period. Each time, the weeping grew stronger, and so forth. During the short prayer “Achos Ketanah,” mentioned above, my heart was still filled with tears. EN: The time had already arrived to welcome the holy day of Rosh Hashanah with joy, and so forth. I therefore prolonged this prayer and wept out my heart there, seeking to bring the weeping to its conclusion and ease my mind. I remained there at length in prayer and tears. At last I was compelled to stop weeping, for I saw that however long I continued I would not succeed in easing my mind completely, and so forth. I then accepted and prepared myself to welcome the holy Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah with joy. EN: Each person recited what he desired beside the holy tomb. I once again recited the Tikkun HaKlali there, binding myself to holy Rabbainu, and so forth; the prayers for the pidyon; the prayer concerning Rashbi—may his merit protect us—which is recited on Lag BaOmer and which we customarily recite every day and whenever we are with Rashbi, may his merit protect us; prayers for Rosh Hashanah, and so forth; hisbodedus; and heartfelt petitions. The Yom Tov lights were kindled, as were many candles upon the holy tomb—mostly tallow candles and a few lamps of olive oil. We began preparing for the Rosh Hashanah Maariv service.
