EN: In sum, I entered the guesthouse with them. It pleased them greatly, and they too agreed to lodge there. We prayed Maariv there, and afterward went to the home of the Sephardic shamash from Meron. We sat there for some time and spoke with him about the journey to Meron. He promised to travel with us early the following morning, but on condition that each of us give him ten grush as a fee for his trouble; he would then lodge there with us. EN: He told us that not long before, several Breslover Chassidim had been there and had lodged there. In the middle of the night, however, non-Jews had pounded upon the door (they had been seeking the shamash in order to speak with him, but he was in their village). The Chassidim became so frightened that they did not know where to hide, until they resolved to conceal themselves in the cistern in the beis midrash. When we heard this, it certainly caused us distress and fear - particularly because all beginnings are difficult, and for us this was the first time. EN: We were filled with fear. Nevertheless, we accepted the undertaking upon ourselves and resolved that we would do it, whatever might happen. Yet there was also the severe cold there: all the windows and doors, together with their frames, were broken; the wind blew in from every side; and there was nothing upon which to sleep. During the disturbances the Arabs had taken everything - even the doors and windows, etc. We therefore asked him to bring a mat with him to spread upon the ground so that we could sleep upon it. EN: We returned from him to the guesthouse. Nearby lived a man who owned many cows and goats, etc. He asked whether we wanted milk, cream, or cheese, etc. They bought cream and soft cheese from him to eat. I did not wish to do so, because, I said, I had no money for it; but they pressed me. I was compelled to buy one grush's worth of soft cheese, so that I would have something to eat then and during the time I would be in Meron. Two hard cheeses were also brought. I took one, for ten grush, to bring home, and the other man took the second for himself. EN: We sat together to eat, sang the hymn Bar Yochai, and danced there. I also saw for the first time a book that had been compiled, gathering all the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai from all the Gemaras and Midrashim into one work. I was supposed to sleep in another room, but had no desire to do so; I wanted all of us to be together. In sum, we labored and brought the third bed from the other room into this one. We slept until Chatzos; at Chatzos we arose and recited Tikkun Chatzos and Psalms, and afterward slept a little more. EN: I rose at daybreak and went to a cold mikvah. From there I went to the synagogue of the Arizal to pray. I received an aliyah and also gelilah. From there I hastened to the grave of the Arizal. I recited the ten Psalms of the Tikkun HaKlali, its accompanying prayer, and several additional prayers and supplications. From there I wished to continue onward to the grave of Rabbi Shimon, the gabbai of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and to the grave of the Yenuka, etc. I was afraid and frightened to go there alone. Nevertheless, I emboldened myself and went. I did not remain there long because of my fear and also because I saw non-Jews walking there. EN: When I returned from there to the guesthouse, they had not yet returned from prayer. I waited for them until they came, then urged them to hurry, for time was being lost. A major dispute had arisen among them over how long to remain in Meron. I desired and yearned to remain there at least until Thursday (which was then the first day of Chanukah). The second man likewise wished to spend several days there. The third, however, refused under any circumstances, because he was a melamed and could suffer a great loss if he delayed there. He therefore wanted to lodge there for only one night and return immediately. We proposed that he travel back while we remained for some time longer, but he would not agree under any circumstances: the second man must travel back with him immediately in the morning. I could not remain there alone, and was therefore compelled to return together with them. EN: When I heard this, my heart burned within me: why could I not remain for several days? The expenses were great, and I could not merit such a journey whenever I wished. I therefore devised a plan and went in search of a certain Sephardic man who was almost one of the members of our fellowship. He had been in Uman at the holy tziyun; he served Hashem and spent much time at the graves of tzaddikim, especially in Meron whenever he was there. He was then living in the courtyard beside the synagogue at the grave of Rabbi Benaah the Amora. A few days each month he worked in construction, earning a little money from which he could subsist for the entire month on bread and salt and occupy himself with the service of Hashem. In sum, he was a rare individual. EN: I went in search of him, thinking that perhaps he would be willing to remain with me in Meron for several days. I sought him in his room but did not find him. They told me that he might be in one of the aforementioned synagogues, or at a construction site, for he had a small job. I went to seek him in the synagogue of the Arizal, may his merit protect us, amen, but did not find him, because it was locked. I then went to the synagogue of “the White Tzaddik” - namely, the aforementioned Rabbi Benaah the Amora - and found him there. I recited several Psalms and a supplication at the holy tziyun, and afterward spoke with the Sephardic man about staying in Meron. He answered that he had no time at present, because he had a small job; even this small amount of work would occupy him for more than a week. No matter how much I pleaded with him, it was of no avail. EN: I considered establishing an arrangement with him whereby I would come another time and he would travel there with me. He told me that he could not afford the expense of traveling from Safed to Meron, since a special taxi for the outward and return journey required a great deal of money. Then, when one wished to return, one again had to summon a special taxi to bring one back. When he traveled by himself he went on foot or rode upon a donkey, etc. EN: In sum, I saw that there was nothing to discuss. I returned to them crestfallen and urged them to hurry, but they were still making preparations. At any rate, we ate the morning meal, and they also took some bread with them, etc. The third man still wished to visit the cemetery and the grave of the Arizal, may his merit protect us, amen. He wanted me to go with him, but I refused, for I had already been there, as stated above. According to the Arizal, of blessed memory, it is dangerous to go to the same grave twice in one day. Moreover, I was weary and exhausted and did not wish to exert myself further in this, because then I would have no strength to engage in the service of Hashem in Meron. EN: He went alone. Meanwhile, I went once more to the mikvah, because I knew that there was no mikvah in Meron; going to the Megiddo River was frightening, and when people return from the cemetery they customarily go to the mikvah again. EN: When I returned from the mikvah I was delayed somewhat, and the other man likewise returned from the cemetery. We took our belongings and went to the Sephardic shamash mentioned above, so that he might travel with us. He was not at home, however, for he had gone about his affairs and business. The members of his household told us that he also had to eat the midday meal with the son of the sheikh of Meron (the son was himself now the sheikh) there in their home, and therefore could not travel until after noon. This delay caused us distress. At any rate, we remained in his house and waited for him. EN: We sent one of our party to hire a taxi. He searched until he found one and agreed with the driver upon a fare of ninety grush: he would take us to Meron, return the following day to collect us, and travel with us as far as Tiberias. Our companion did not give the driver an advance payment, however, because he feared that we might not yet be ready to travel. He returned to us, and we all waited for some time, until the Sephardic shamash returned home and ate. Afterward he went with us to the taxi. EN: We could no longer find that taxi, however, for it had departed. We were compelled to travel by a taxi that would take us only as far as Meron and, on the following day, only as far as Safed. Thus, with Hashem's help, we traveled to Meron and arrived there at noon. We agreed with the taxi driver that on the following day, at seven o'clock, he would come for us and bring us to Safed. I insisted that we remain there, at any rate, throughout the following day as well; they insisted that we return immediately in the morning. We finally agreed that on the following day we would see how Hashem's providence would unfold: whenever the driver came for us, we would travel with him.
