EN: R. Avraham immediately entered and urged us to pray. We began reciting the blessings, and he appointed one of the members of our fellowship to stand before the amud. The latter recited the Morning Blessings deliberately, followed by the Ketores and the other passages through Hodu. He then recited Hodu together with the congregation, as customary, with deliberation and intent; the additional Shabbos psalms, including “For the conductor: the heavens declare”; Baruch SheAmar and Pesukay DeZimrah; the Song at the Sea and Nishmas; the blessings of Kreyas Shima, Kreyas Shima itself, and the blessings that follow it. I too prayed the entire service deliberately, with intent and word by word. EN: We timed the Shemoneh Esrei for sunrise, like the vasikin, in accordance with my regular custom. We prayed the silent Shemoneh Esrei with intent and awakening and in the Rosh Hashanah rite, accompanied by clapping and audible cries of intent and fervor. When we completed the silent Shemoneh Esrei, those who had not prayed with us arrived, as on the preceding day. R. Avraham Baruch had already prepared himself. At the beginning of our service he had stood beside the holy tomb reciting Zohar and Tehillim, but had not yet wished to pray. Now they sought to delay us for several hours as on the day before, so that they could pray first. The members of our fellowship refused to wait. This was the eve of the holy Shabbos; how could we delay so long, when preparations had to be made for Shabbos? Therefore even those who never prayed early on other occasions prayed early that day in honor of Shabbos. EN: The young men were also angry with R. Avraham Baruch for having the insolence and audacity to speak derisively of a congregation of worthy men and of service of Hashem performed with awakening, and so forth. How could a large congregation—ben porat Yosef—be subjugated in every prayer and every matter to two or three opponents who mocked them? This harmed their service of Hashem: if they prayed early, they could prolong the prayers with greater intent and awakening, and so forth. Similarly, when we wished to spend the evening studying Rabbainu’s Torah and dancing in accordance with our custom, the others wished to hurry so that they could sleep, and we were compelled to cancel our practice before them, and so forth. The younger members of our fellowship therefore refused under any circumstances to delay and wait for several hours. EN: Moreover, once the awakening of prayer has already begun, if one interrupts it, it is difficult to labor anew and restore that awakening, and so forth. In sum, R. Avraham Baruch began disparaging, reviling, and cursing R. Avraham, his prayer service in general, and the members of our fellowship. He began extolling his own chasidim, saying that none of the members of our fellowship reached even their ankles, and so forth. In truth, I too was angered by his insolence and audacity; nevertheless, my judgment was that for the sake of peace it was worthwhile to yield. EN: This was especially so on such a fearful and awesome day and in so holy and awesome a place. It was worthwhile to yield greatly and not quarrel, God forbid, for how much anguish, as it were, does the Shechinah suffer from the quarrels of Israel! We all needed to secure a good year, and so forth. Moreover, I knew this man: if we remained at peace with him, it would always be to our benefit and he would remain our friend, as he was a friend to me and to the earlier members of our fellowship who had spent several years with him in Meron. He loved us and was our acquaintance. Conversely, if we quarreled with him, he would become our persecutor, God forbid; and, as the sage says, a thousand friends are preferable to one enemy. EN: The younger members of our fellowship, however, could not endure it and answered his disparagement with disparagement of their own. R. Yisrael Dov responded to him until he became enraged. Were it not that he stood in so holy a place on so holy a day, he would literally have smashed R. Yisrael Dov’s head. He also feared us, since we were the majority and would not permit him to strike, and so forth. He nevertheless reviled and cursed R. Yisrael Dov exceedingly and became his enemy. The fire of dispute literally blazed. Had there been any remedy, I would have employed it; but where could we go? It was Yom Tov, travel to Tzefas was forbidden because of the Sabbath boundaries, no other minyan existed, and we had to hear the shofar blasts and pray Mussaf specifically with a minyan, and so forth. EN: In sum, they recruited several members of our fellowship who had not yet prayed. These men did not wish to join them, but I appeased them and urged them not to perpetuate the dispute. They agreed and joined in order to provide the other group with a minyan for Shacharis. That minyan prayed Shacharis in the inner chamber of Rashbi’s tomb. We entered the large beis midrash between the tomb of Rashbi—may his merit protect us—and the tomb of his son R. Elazar—may his merit protect us. There our prayer leader repeated the Shemoneh Esrei, and we recited with intent and awakening the Shacharis liturgical poems of the second day, which are longer than those of the first day. My heart, however, was filled with anguish over the dispute and the separation of hearts between us and them. My heart was literally broken within me and embittered over it. Moreover, I had become accustomed to the inner chamber of the holy tomb, where one also feels greater awakening and fervor of heart. EN: I therefore recited the liturgical poems with a broken heart and spirit. Before the holy tomb I was terribly ashamed—like the shame of a thief—because of the division of hearts and the fire of strife on such a day and in such a place. How mighty was the power of the Other Side! Satan was dancing, and the evil inclination had emerged from the Holy of Holies like a fiery lion cub, as described in the Gemara. I recited the poems with a broken heart until we completed them and the leader’s repetition of the Shemoneh Esrei. We then read the Torah in that large beis midrash. All those who had purchased aliyos on the eve of Rosh Hashanah were called, as stated above, and we completed the Torah reading and the Haftarah.
