EN: Some among us already had to travel to their work and therefore hurried down to the road in order to secure a place on a bus to Haifa. R. Yisrael Dov, may his light shine, likewise prepared to leave. I urged him to approach R. Avraham Baruch and ask his forgiveness, while we would intervene and make peace between them. He was displeased with the proposal, but R. Avraham also entreated him to do it, and we virtually pushed him forward. In sum, we made peace between them. R. Avraham himself told R. Yisrael Dov that he regretted our failure to exercise patience and avoid quarreling, and so forth. Peace was restored among all of us, and, thank God, we departed in peace. EN: The second minyan then began its prayers. Several other men and I joined them because they lacked a complete minyan. They prayed with intent from the Morning Blessings through the conclusion of the Shemoneh Esrei, and then recited the Selichos for the Fast of Gedaliah, which occupied a long time. Meanwhile I remained beside the holy tomb wearing Rabbainu Tam tefillin and recited the Tikkun HaKlali, the prayers for the pidyon, the prayers for Lag BaOmer and Yom Kippur, and so forth. EN: I engaged in hisbodedus beside the holy tomb and poured out my conversation, petitions, prayers, and supplications. They read “Vayechal” from the Torah and completed their service. I concluded my petitions beside the holy tomb with words of farewell—what is called gezegenen zich. I kissed the holy tomb; we danced to “Bar Yochai,” and so forth; then kissed the holy tomb once more and went out carrying our bundles. Those who were remaining came to escort us. EN: We approached the tomb of the divine Tanna R. Elazar, of blessed memory, recited several psalms and our heartfelt petitions there, each person as he desired, and kissed the holy tomb. We then went to the tomb of Rashbi located there, kissed it, and took leave with intense heartfelt longing and yearning. We crossed the courtyard to the grave of R. Yitzchak beside the doorway, recited several psalms and heartfelt petitions, kissed the holy tomb, and departed joyfully, setting out upon our journey with our bundles. EN: We walked down the entire mountain to the road. There we found several of the people who had hurried away in the middle of the service to secure seats on a bus traveling from Tzefas to Haifa. They had been unable to board because the buses were full. On Sunday, and especially after Yom Tov, buses from Tzefas to Haifa were crowded: many people traveled to Tzefas for Shabbos and Yom Tov and returned to their work on Sunday. The crowding around the buses in Tzefas was therefore severe, and it was certainly difficult to find vacant seats by the time they reached Meron. Several men had traveled to Tzefas in the hope of finding places there. EN: We sat upon stones beside the road and spoke joyfully and contentedly of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. R. Avraham related his return journeys from Uman after Rosh Hashanah together with the Rav of Tcherin: how joyful the Rav had been along the road, and how in every village and city they had held celebratory meals because they had merited to spend Rosh Hashanah in Uman. R. Avraham likewise told us that he himself now rejoiced exactly as he had after Rosh Hashanah in Uman, and so forth. After we had sat there for some time, an Egged bus arrived. With difficulty we secured places aboard for R. Avraham and his wife, because they were elderly and could not endure the exertions of the road; in this manner they might still reach their home in Jerusalem that day. So it was: they boarded the bus and departed. EN: We remained beside the road for a long time, until after midday. An Arab bus then passed and we traveled on it to Haifa. By the time we arrived, no bus remained for Jerusalem. We went to the Arab bus station and boarded a bus to Jaffa, arriving after nightfall. We prayed Minchah aboard the bus. We wished to alight in Tel Aviv, but the driver did not stop until he had nearly reached Jaffa. We got off on the road to Jaffa and were compelled to walk back with our bundles until we reached Tel Aviv, by which time it was already night. I personally was distressed as to where I would sleep. I was therefore glad to be traveling with other members of our fellowship who knew the roads and could find lodging with friends or in an inn, and I thanked Hashem that I had not traveled alone. EN: We walked until we reached the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv. Minyanim were praying Maariv in the courtyard, while classes were being taught inside. We prayed Maariv with one minyan and afterward walked to the home of an elderly man who had come to the Jerusalem gathering for Shavuos in fulfillment of the pilgrimage and had prayed in our beis midrash. We possessed bread and ate it. He gave us several cups of tea with sugar and provided a place in a narrow little room where we could lie and rest upon a pillow and bench. It was almost dark because of the blackout, for this was during the Second World War. We arose at midnight and performed Tikkun Chatzos, and so forth. EN: During the morning watch we went to the Great Synagogue and recited Selichos there with a minyan. We also prayed Shacharis there early. I put on Rabbainu Tam tefillin, and we studied Shulchan Aruch and our other fixed studies. I recited the Tikkun HaKlali, Tehillim, and so forth. We then returned to the home where we had lodged. The elderly man’s wife had already been searching for us, wishing us to eat breakfast. We did so and ate there, after which we traveled home to Jerusalem. Thank God, we arrived safely at our home on Monday. EN: My wife related that throughout the entire eve of Rosh Hashanah the household had waited for me to arrive for Rosh Hashanah. I had told her that in all likelihood I would return to Jerusalem immediately after the prayer service on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. My intention had been to fulfill both opinions: to spend the eve of Rosh Hashanah at the tomb of the true tzadik Rashbi—may his merit protect us—in accordance with R. Avraham’s view, and to spend Rosh Hashanah itself with the great gathering in Jerusalem in accordance with the opinion of the other members of our fellowship. EN: When I was in Meron on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, however, I had no desire to do this. First, there was the strain of the journey: I would spend the eve of Rosh Hashanah alone upon the roads rather than in the service of Hashem. Who knew what obstacles might confront me along the road, or what anguish I might suffer in guarding my eyes aboard the buses? Moreover, my departure would greatly humiliate R. Avraham and the members of our fellowship who had traveled to Meron. I would already be present and then turn back, which would be worse than not having traveled at all. I therefore remained in Meron for Rosh Hashanah. EN: I derived immense satisfaction from that Rosh Hashanah. Thank God, I spent those days in Torah and pure prayer, without turning at all toward this world, and so forth. I also poured out my entire conversation and heart before Hashem. That Rosh Hashanah was truly filled with joy, weeping, awakening, and gladness. I derived immense satisfaction from it, and its savor remained in my heart throughout the ensuing period. My wife and children, may they live, prayed with the gathering in Jerusalem. I had thus fulfilled both views: I was with this gathering beside the tzadik Rashbi—may his merit protect us—while my entire household was with the gathering of the members of our fellowship in Jerusalem, and so forth.
