EN: I hastened to our synagogue to see what would be decided concerning removal of the first Torah scroll. I had spoken with the gabbai and asked to purchase the privilege of removing the first scroll on the eve of Yom Kippur. The holy Zohar, and especially the writings of the Arizal, state that this is a complete rectification for vows; the Arizal instructed his disciple to purchase the scroll for whatever sum was demanded; it is also a rectification of the Covenant and is equivalent to the 233 fasts he would otherwise have had to observe; and it prevents the Adversary from provoking him. Other sacred works, as well as teachings of R. Aharon the Great of Karlin, describe the greatness of purchasing the first scroll. I asked the gabbai how much he desired for it. EN: He answered that he was compelled to auction it publicly before the entire congregation and that the highest bidder would merit it. Even this could be done only after he obtained the consent of R. Avraham and the other members of our fellowship, for perhaps R. Naftali Kohen, of blessed memory, or R. Shlomo Wexler possessed an established right to remove the Torah scroll, in which case it would not be sold under any circumstances. I longed intensely to merit this mitzvah and felt deeply embarrassed to plead with him so insistently. Nevertheless, I strengthened myself and had asked him even before the eve of Yom Kippur. He promised to speak with R. Avraham and the elders; if they permitted him, he would auction it in the synagogue on the eve of Yom Kippur. EN: During our Shacharis service in the little prayer room in Batei Machseh on the morning of the eve of Yom Kippur—I also gave a small sum to our prayer leader, R. David, who had been injured in Tel Aviv before Rosh Hashanah when his home was destroyed and a bomb fragment scratched his forehead during the enemy aircraft’s bombardment, and who had come to live temporarily in Jerusalem in poverty and total want—the gabbai told me that he had not yet asked or spoken with anyone. Moreover, this was not the place to conduct the auction, and not all the members of our fellowship who customarily came from outside the city to pray Yom Kippur with us were present. He would therefore ask R. Shlomo and R. Naftali that evening, when everyone came to the synagogue for Kol Nidrei, whether they waived their established right, and so forth, and would then conduct the auction. EN: I nearly despaired of the matter. Who would possess the mind or heart for buying and selling at that time, when everyone was filled with the dread and fear of the Day of Judgment and was hurrying to prepare for Kol Nidrei? Moreover, who knew whether R. Shlomo and R. Naftali would agree to it? I nearly despaired of this mitzvah entirely. EN: My longing, however, was exceedingly great. The more the obstacle intensifies, the more intensely desire grows, for the obstacle exists for the sake of the yearning, as explained in Likutay Moharan, Lesson 66, on “a double portion of your spirit.” One must not discharge oneself with the mere “as though”: he contemplated in the darkness performing the mitzvah, was prevented by circumstances, and is credited as though he fulfilled it. A Jew must instead possess so intense a yearning for every holy matter that he ultimately merits to perform it, rather than contenting himself with the “as though.” The principal thing is yearning and desire. If a person possesses the great desire appropriate to the holy act he wishes to perform, he will certainly merit to accomplish it. In sum, my longing for this sanctity grew exceedingly intense. EN: Immediately after the concluding meal I hastened away, walking to the synagogue without shoes, in my stockings alone. When I arrived, I kindled my olive-oil lamp, sat in my place, and recited Tefillah Zakkah with awakening, followed by the Tikkun HaKlali with awakening, intent, and weeping, and so forth. People arrived gradually and began preparing the Lux lamp for kindling. It was also the eve of Shabbos, the sun was close to setting, there was scarcely more than a minyan, and the gabbai had not yet arrived. I nearly despaired: how could he possibly conduct an auction now, and so forth? EN: R. Avraham, may his light shine, arrived and said that Kol Nidrei had to be recited while the sun was still above the horizon. Since a minyan was already present, he would wait for no one. He instructed me to open the Ark. I immediately went forward with great awakening and joy, for I had now attained that which I had desired and for which I had yearned so very intensely. I opened the Ark, removed the first Torah scroll, embraced it, and kissed it. R. Noson, a grandson of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, took the second scroll. Meanwhile R. Naftali, of blessed memory, arrived and took another Torah scroll, and afterward R. Shlomo arrived and likewise took a scroll. EN: I stood to the prayer leader’s right with the Torah scroll in my arms, while R. Noson stood to his left holding his scroll. Several times we recited aloud “Light is sown for the righteous,” and so forth, with weeping and awakening. We then recited the passage from the Tikkunim beginning “R. Shimon arose,” with awakening, intent, and weeping. Meanwhile all the people arrived and embraced and kissed the Torah scrolls in our hands. Embracing and kissing the Torah scrolls at that time constitutes a great rectification and reconciliation—through remorse and teshuvah—for having sinned against the holy Torah, and so forth. EN: The prayer leader, the rabbi R. Avraham, began by reciting three times, as prescribed, “In the heavenly court and in the earthly court, we permit prayer with the transgressors.” He then chanted Kol Nidrei in its familiar melody and with awakening, while we recited it together with him. The second recitation was in a stronger voice, and the third in a still louder voice, with awakening and weeping. This continued until close to nightfall. We afterward recited, “It shall be forgiven to the entire congregation,” followed by, “Hashem said: I have forgiven in accordance with your word.” Rabbainu’s words in Likutay Moharan teach that corresponding to the forgiveness secured on Yom Kippur, one has Chanukah—the dedication of the house, meaning the mochin. We then recited Kabbalas Shabbos and the blessing Shehecheyanu, followed by “A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day,” and returned the Torah scrolls to the Holy Ark. EN: I was exceedingly satisfied that Hashem had helped me fulfill that for which I had yearned so long. In a wondrous manner, after I had completely despaired, Hashem helped me merit it.
