EN: During the morning watch people began arriving to pray with the vasikin minyan. They began communally reciting Shir HaYichud and Shir HaKavod before the amud and singing Adon Olam, and so forth. I began preparing for Shacharis and remained there to pray the early-morning vasikin service, in accordance with my daily custom. EN: I began with the Morning Blessings and continued with the Akedah, “A person should always,” and the Kreyas Shima of the offerings, all with awakening and intent. I likewise recited the offerings, Hodu, the additional Shabbos psalms beginning “For the conductor,” Pesukay DeZimrah, the Song at the Sea, and Nishmas, all together with the congregation and with intent and awakening. EN: Alone, in accordance with our chasidic custom—though not the Ashkenazic custom of the Perushim—I recited “A song of ascents: From the depths” with awakening and weeping. Then came Barchu, the blessings of Kreyas Shima, and “Blessed is the Name” aloud and with intent, followed by the remaining paragraphs of Kreyas Shima with intent and awakening; the blessings after Kreyas Shima, Emes VeYatziv, Ezras, and so forth; the joining of redemption to prayer with “Rock of Israel”; and the silent Shemoneh Esrei with intent and awakening. This was especially so during the confessions Ashamnu and Al Chet; “Forgive us”; “For the sins”; and “My God, before I was formed,” all with intent, weeping, awakening, teshuvah, and complete remorse. The prayer continued so long that the leader had already recited several of the yotzeros and liturgical poems of Yom Kippur Shacharis. EN: When I completed the silent Shemoneh Esrei, I went to the Western Wall and recited the Tikkun HaKlali, Yom Kippur prayers, prayers of teshuvah, hisbodedus, and petitions to Hashem. I remained there for some time, then returned home and found that my sons, may they live, were already praying in our synagogue. EN: I went to our synagogue and found them in the middle of Shacharis, before Barchu. R. Yaakov Zev had led the beginning of the service through “HaMelech.” Upon reaching “HaMelech,” R. David—our regular prayer leader for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—approached the amud. There was great awakening when “HaMelech” was proclaimed: the entire congregation stood, clapped, and cried “The King!” aloud. He continued leading, and the congregation recited “A song of ascents: From the depths” verse by verse with him, with intent, awakening, and weeping, followed by Barchu. EN: I sat in my place beside R. Naftali Kohen and meanwhile recited prayers and engaged in hisbodedus with awakening. They prolonged the blessings of Kreyas Shima with awakening, then recited “Hear, O Israel” and “Blessed is the Name” aloud and with an awakening like thunder, as described above. They continued with all the paragraphs of Kreyas Shima, the blessings following it, and the silent Shemoneh Esrei with awakening and tears, until they completed the silent prayer. EN: The prayer leader then began the liturgical poems, one after another, which we recited with awakening. The poem “LeKel Orech Din” was said with awakening and abundant weeping. All the poems and the leader’s repetition of the Shemoneh Esrei were likewise accompanied by awakening and weeping, in accordance with R. David’s well-known, deeply stirring manner of leading prayer. Then came the Selichos “Remember Your mercy” and “Hear our voice”; the confessions Al Chet, which the congregation recited and the leader repeated; “Forgive us”; and “For the sins,” all with complete remorse, teshuvah, intent from the depths of the heart, and so forth. So the service continued through the conclusion of Shacharis, all with deep heartfelt intent. “By David: Hashem is my light” was recited with great intent and awakening. EN: The aliyos for the Torah readings were then auctioned for both the first and second prayer rooms, together with the opening of the Ark, hagbah, gelilah, and so forth, and likewise for the Minchah reading. I did not need to purchase an aliyah for myself because I was the only Levi in the first room. My son, may his light shine, was the Levi in the second room. I purchased hagbah. EN: They proceeded to the Torah reading. When the Ark was opened, we recited the prayer and Brich Shemei with awakening, followed by the Thirteen Attributes with intent and awakening. R. Yaakov Zev read with intent and awakening, especially the verse “After the death of the two sons of Aharon,” which elicited weeping and awakening from the congregation. We completed the readings, Maftir, and Haftarah. The Torah scrolls were then left covered upon the table, and an interval of one hour was announced.
