EN: Between Shacharis and Mussaf we went to the Western Wall and recited the Tikkun HaKlali, Yom Kippur prayers, and other hisbodedus and petitions with awakening. Several members of our fellowship remained to pray Mussaf and recite the Avodah at the Western Wall with its regular minyan. There was also—ben porat Yosef—a very large congregation from other batei midrash, for it was customary to go to the Western Wall between Shacharis and Mussaf. EN: Nearly all the members of our fellowship returned to our beis midrash. Yizkor was begun, and those of us whose father and mother were living remained outside, as customary. When the emissary of the congregation began Av HaRachamim, we entered and recited it with awakening and great intent. EN: The prayer leader, the rabbi R. Avraham, may his light shine, began Ashrei, which we recited with weeping, intent, and great and immense awakening. When we finished, he began “Righteous is Hashem in all His ways” in the Uman Rosh Hashanah melody and movements, with weeping and powerful awakening. The congregation hummed after him word by word in a whisper, with weeping and awakening: “Hashem is near,” “the desire of those who fear Him,” “Hashem guards,” “the praise of Hashem,” and so forth, in a melody and movements of awakening beyond estimation. He then recited “They shall praise,” and so forth, and the Torah scrolls were returned to the Holy Ark. EN: The leader then stood before the amud and began, in a tearful voice and with the Uman melody and movements, the prayer “Behold, I am poor in deeds.” I sat and whispered every word after him with weeping and an awakening beyond estimation: “Although I am unworthy,” “do not condemn them for my sins,” and so forth. He prolonged it greatly, with movements, melody, and weeping that profoundly awakened and broke the heart beyond estimation or appraisal, until he completed the entire prayer preceding Mussaf. Kaddish followed in a tearful melody that awakened and broke the heart without measure. EN: We stood for the silent Mussaf service with awakening throughout the congregation, each person individually praying with spiritual arousal, clapping, awe, trembling, and tears. I too prayed with awakening and abundant weeping, especially during “Because of our sins,” “the additional offering of Yom Kippur,” and afterward the confessions Ashamnu and Al Chet; “For all of them, God of forgiveness, forgive us”; “For the sins”; and “My God, before I was formed,” all with remorse, teshuvah from the depths of the heart, weeping, and awakening, until we completed the silent Mussaf prayer. EN: The leader began the repetition and the liturgical poems with awakening. This was especially so when he reached “Unesaneh Tokef,” with its familiar melody and awakening. First the entire congregation recited it together with intense awakening and weeping. The leader then returned to its beginning and chanted “Unesaneh Tokef” in his melody and movements that profoundly awaken and break the heart. We whispered every word with him amid weeping and heartfelt awakening: “On Rosh Hashanah they shall be inscribed,” and so forth. EN: The entire congregation then proclaimed together, in a voice like thunder, “But teshuvah, prayer, and tzedakah,” and so forth, continuing through “For as Your Name.” The leader repeated this in a joyful melody, then chanted, “Man’s origin is from dust and his end is dust; at the hazard of his life he earns his bread; he is likened to a shattered shard,” and so forth, with melody and movements that profoundly broke the heart, abundant weeping, and great awakening. He then continued joyfully, “But You are the living King,” “There is no limit,” and so forth, through the Kedushah of Kesser, which both congregation and leader recited through its conclusion. EN: There followed “From generation to generation,” “You are holy,” “And therefore the righteous,” all with the powerful awakening of Rosh Hashanah, and Aleinu, and so forth. Especially stirring was the alphabetic poem beginning “He Who holds the attribute of judgment,” with its refrain “and all believe,” instituted by Ezra the Scribe. It greatly arouses the heart. The congregation recited each stanza with awakening and weeping, and the leader repeated it in his melody and heart-breaking movements. So they proceeded with the second stanza and onward through the poem’s conclusion, everything amid awakening and tears. EN: The leader afterward chanted “Because of our sins” with weeping and awakening. When the Yom Kippur Avodah began with “You established,” the congregation recited it together with awakening, heartfelt yearning, anguish of soul, and tears; the leader repeated it with awakening, weeping, and its familiar melody and movements. So the sequence continued with “Thus he would say,” “Thus he would count,” “And the Kohanim,” and so forth. At each appointed place everyone fell upon his knees and prostrated himself before Hashem, and afterward the leader likewise knelt, all with awakening and weeping. This recurred throughout the service, followed by the Kohen Gadol’s prayer that the coming year should be, and so forth. EN: The leader then chanted the poem “Like a tent stretched forth ... was the appearance of the Kohen” in its familiar melody and with movements that awakened and broke the heart, stirring tears, anguish, and longing. There followed the prayers “At the mere hearing our soul grieves,” “Fortunate,” and the subsequent prayers concerning the passing afflictions, extending over several pages. The whole congregation recited them with intense weeping, awakening, and anguish. Then came the account of the Ten Martyrs, “These I recall,” with immeasurable heartbreak, weeping from the depths of heart and soul, and total self-effacement beyond estimation or appraisal. EN: There followed the Selichos “Remember Your mercy” and “Hear our voice,” and the confessions Ashamnu, Al Chet, and “For the sins,” all with the familiar deep remorse, teshuvah, anguish, and weeping. In sum, at the conclusion of the Selichos came “Your righteous anointed one,” “Do not fear, My servant Yaakov,” and “Return, wayward children,” recited with intense awakening and weeping. So Mussaf, which lasted many hours, came to its conclusion amid powerful awakening and exceedingly abundant tears. EN: After Mussaf ended and the immense weeping and bitter emotion at its conclusion had subsided, an interval of one hour was announced. Many went to the Western Wall to recite Tehillim and prayers, while the others recited them in the synagogue, and some rested briefly, and so forth.
