EN: The sacred days of Chanukah then arrived. Rabbi Avraham, a grandson of Moharnat, of blessed memory, traveled to Bnei Brak for Shabbos Chanukah, to the gathering of the members of our fellowship. They had invited him for the ceremonial commencement of the writing of the Torah scroll for our synagogue there, which took place on Sunday with a wondrous celebration and ceremony. They likewise invited Rabbi Elchanan Spektor, may his lamp shine, and other men. I, however, merited spending Shabbos Chanukah in Jerusalem, the Holy City, together with the gathering in Jerusalem, the Holy City. This was one of the three occasions on which people would travel to our holy Rabbainu; Rabbainu, of blessed memory, delivered a Torah teaching at that time, as is known. EN: On the eve of Chanukah I prepared myself in the service of Hashem at the Western Wall and in my hisbodedus room. We prayed Maariv at the Western Wall. There they lit, with a blessing, a single Chanukah light in a cup of oil, and sang HaNeiros Halalu, as customary, and Maoz Tzur Yeshuasi, etc. I then went immediately home to light the lamps, so that I might at least light within the half-hour prescribed lechatchilah [as the preferred observance]. That is, the Shulchan Aruch records a dispute: some authorities hold that the primary time begins immediately at sunset and ends at the emergence of the stars. This is the view of the Gemara and the majority of the poskim. The Perushim in Jerusalem follow this view and are exceedingly scrupulous concerning it, etc. There is, however, a lenient opinion in this matter, and the Chassidim follow it, lighting after Maariv. EN: Had I not been embarrassed, I would have followed the practice of the Perushim and lit at sunset before Maariv. Because of the embarrassment, however, and because I could not alter the practice to which I had been accustomed from my youth - lighting after Maariv - I at least wished to hasten so that my lighting would take place before the emergence of the stars, that is, before half past twelve according to Arab timekeeping (for sunset was at twelve). I would pray Minchah at the Western Wall. After Minchah, the lamps were lit in the Sephardic shamash's menorah, with a blessing and hymns, as customary. (Each night a different one of us was honored with the lighting.) EN: Afterward I would run at once to pray Maariv with the Chassidim in Batei Machaseh, for they prayed Maariv early, hastening on account of the Chanukah lighting. The Perushim, by contrast, delayed Maariv and prayed it late. Immediately after the Barechu recited before Aleinu, I would run home with great haste. Everything there was already prepared, for all the preparations had been made at home. I would recite the leshem yichud found in the work Avodas HaKodesh by Azulai, which is also included in the siddur of Rabbi Yaakov Emden, of blessed memory. I would then light immediately and sing the aforementioned hymns. EN: At my home, too, the mitzvah was fulfilled in an enhanced manner. I followed the practice I had seen with my father, may his lamp shine: every one of us lit Chanukah lights. Even a young child, provided that he knew how to speak and could be guided through the blessing, had his own Chanukah menorah. I followed this practice as well. EN: Consequently, Baruch Hashem, there were four Chanukah menorahs in my household. I lit in the courtyard, outside the doorway of my home, for pirsumei nisa [publicizing the miracle], in accordance with the primary law of the Gemara and the practice of the Perushim here in Jerusalem, may it be built and established. My eldest son, may his lamp shine, lit his menorah at the doorway of the inner room within the house. The two of us lit at the aforementioned time, with great haste after Maariv, as stated above. My son Aharon, may his lamp shine, and my youngest son, may his lamp shine, lit inside the house at the window; they lit earlier, at sunset, in accordance with the practice of the Perushim. EN: Thus the sacred days of Chanukah passed over me, each day occupied with the customary divine service and with hisbodedus. Members of our fellowship from Shaarei Chesed would also come to study together with me in my hisbodedus room, and we danced as well. EN: We also had a wedding at that time, of one of the members of our fellowship. A festive meal was held in the Old City, in our bais midrash. Because of the wartime conditions, the meal was held during the day. There was a large gathering: many members of our fellowship came from outside the city, together with all those from within the city. We sat together for several hours at the meal and danced. The groom also recited a composition in rhymed verse of the kind called gramen, and they studied the passage in Likutay Moharan that speaks of Chanukah. EN: Thus we remained there from midday onward until the time for lighting the Chanukah lamps. We then recited Birkas HaMazon together with the Sheva Berachos for the bridegroom and bride, prayed Maariv, and went to light the Chanukah lamps. EN: On the eve of Rosh Chodesh Teves we likewise traveled to Rachel's Tomb with self-sacrifice. The holy tziyun was still closed and locked, as it had been for several years, as is known. During that period we had been there only twice, with tremendous self-sacrifice: on 11 Cheshvan, the day of the passing of our Matriarch Rachel, peace be upon her, and on the eve of Rosh Chodesh Kislev. We were ten men together; we hired automobiles, paid the shamash as well, and he traveled with us. EN: Other members of our fellowship, however, traveled in Arab automobiles that went to Bethlehem at low cost. They paid the shamash nothing at all. He therefore refused to admit them, and a quarrel arose between them. We asked him to allow them to enter, and he did so. There was a large congregation, comprising several minyanim, and there was great spiritual arousal. We remained there for an hour, returned to the city, and went to the Western Wall. There too we experienced great spiritual arousal, etc. Thus, Baruch Hashem, the days of Chanukah, including Shabbos Chanukah, passed over us amid spiritual arousal and joy. EN: After Chanukah, on Thursday night, an awakening arose among the younger members of our fellowship to remain throughout the night at Rachel's Tomb - that is, to travel there late Thursday afternoon and remain until after the morning prayers. They did so, and a minyan of men committed themselves to it. I did not join them: first, because of my weakness, and second, because of the extreme gravity of the danger. For several years no man had dared to travel there even by day, apart from the few aforementioned occasions on which we, a select few, had traveled there. How much more dangerous was it to travel at night in the Arab automobiles of Bethlehem and remain there throughout the night, when all the Arabs knew that people were lodging there, at a wilderness site midway along the road, without any guard. I therefore did not travel with them on that occasion. EN: They lodged there throughout the night and occupied themselves with the service of Hashem and Torah, studying Mishnayos and Zohar. They recited the entire Book of Psalms together as a congregation and sounded the shofar. Afterward, when they returned safely, I too felt a desire to do this; nevertheless, I could not summon the courage to undertake it.
