EN: Thus, thank God, the night following Yom Kippur likewise passed in joy and service of Hashem. At midnight we recited Tikkun Leah alone, for Tachanun is no longer said throughout the remainder of the month. Early the following morning we completed the Shacharis service of the day after Yom Kippur. That day is called “Got Namen,” meaning “the Name of Hashem”; explanations for this designation are cited in the name of the righteous R. Pinchas of Koretz. EN: Rabbainu, of blessed memory, explains in Likutay Moharan that all the forgiveness of Yom Kippur comes because His Name is joined with our name. If, God forbid, punishment for sin is imposed upon Yisrael, it touches His blessed Name. Therefore, as it were, Hashem forgives our transgressions and annuls all decrees and punishments for the sake of the sanctity of His Name; His blessed Name then becomes complete. Consequently, after Yom Kippur, when our transgressions have been forgiven and His blessed Name is complete, these days are called “the Name of Hashem.” EN: On that day of “the Name of Hashem”—the day following Yom Kippur—even those who do not ordinarily pray at vasikin rise early, for it is one of the special occasions of early rising. In Poland, all Yisrael experienced a great awakening on the eve of Yom Kippur for Kol Nidrei: everyone came to the synagogue to pray, even the greatest transgressor, and the crowding in the synagogues was immense. In Russia, the great awakening, gathering, and crowding took place after Yom Kippur—on “the Name of Hashem.” EN: We completed the morning service and I ate a little. I immediately went out into the courtyard with my son, may his light shine, to build the sukkah. My wife, may she live, and I decided to build it directly beside our home. Although the place was exceedingly cramped and narrow, and space had to be left for the neighbors to pass, so that its width could be only seven handbreadths—the minimum measure recognized by the Shulchan Aruch in pressing circumstances—its length could be greater. EN: I could not build the sukkah in the other, broad courtyard because of the blackout, for how could I provide light in the sukkah there? If it were built beside the house, however, we could leave the doorway of the house open; the light would remain inside the house and would also illuminate the sukkah. In retrospect I was pleased, because the sukkah in the broad courtyard always faced the idolatrous object [the cross mentioned above], whereas beside the house it was clean. EN: We brought up from the storeroom the wooden walls, the door, and everything else required, and began building beside our home, as stated above. Although the neighbors were displeased because they would have to squeeze past, they could make no objection, for no one could say that we did not need to build it there because of the blackout. As long as the work was not finished, they continued passing through the site of the sukkah. We therefore labored by the sweat of our brow, erecting the walls along its length, while leaving the width open and unfinished so that people could still pass through the sukkah. EN: I also went outside the city to investigate the matter of esrogim. My brother-in-law, R. David Shapira, had begun engaging in the esrog trade, and I took several esrogim from him. They were expensive and not choice, however, and on the following day I sent them back, as my wife had instructed me to do. I purchased a beautiful, ungrafted esrog in Machaneh Yehudah, and another ungrafted esrog from R. Shlomo Bloch. Here in Jerusalem our custom is to purchase only an ungrafted esrog, even if it lacks a pitom. Our principal concern is that it be ungrafted and kosher, without any deficiency; only afterward come considerations of beauty and superior adornment, and so forth. I likewise acquired several additional esrogim for the children. EN: There I also obtained an exceptionally beautiful lulav from Transjordan, straight, stately, and thick. This was truly remarkable, for afterward no beautiful lulavim could be obtained: there was a shortage of lulavim, and I had not yet received any hadassim.
