EN: Thus that first week of Shovavim - Parashas Shemos - passed over me in repentance and the service of Hashem, as stated above. Thursday arrived, and arrangements were made for a minyan of members of our fellowship to remain awake throughout the night at Rachel’s Tomb, as in the preceding week. I longed and yearned for this exceedingly, especially because it was Shovavim, and wished to engage in the service of Hashem throughout the night. EN: Although this matter was exceedingly difficult for me, there was also the fear of spending such a long night in the season of Teves, in an open field outside the settled area and without any guard. All the gentiles knew of it, for we traveled with them both there and back. My heart surely melted within me throughout the day whenever I remembered the difficult thing I was preparing to do. EN: But I had already resolved specifically to do this and to remain there throughout the night, and had already promised them that I too would join them. Yet my heart pounded within me, and I was beset by great fears. I yearned for the night to have already passed and for Friday morning to have arrived, when we would return (shoyn ariber-shpringen [to have already leaped over it]). This was how I felt throughout that Thursday. I also feared lest there be among us some members of our fellowship who liked to shout and wail, which I could not bear and which would confuse all my service. Since those people were then in Meron, as stated above, however, only a few who remained would be with us, and they would be nullified within the majority of the other members of our fellowship, who did not conduct themselves in this manner, but rather with moderation and settled judgment. EN: Toward evening in particular, when we already had to depart, my mind grew dark, and the matter was exceedingly difficult and burdensome for me. Had they offered me any amount of money for it, I would not have accepted it and would not have done it. Yet I had already resolved to do it this time. I therefore acted through sheer stubbornness. I was at the Western Wall and prayed Minchah, and they urged me to make myself ready and go immediately to the gentile automobiles to travel with them. EN: I went home but was afraid to tell my wife the truth - that I was traveling to Rachel’s Tomb. I told her that, since it was now Shovavim, we were remaining awake all night outside the city, in Meah Shearim. I took with me my tallis and tefillin, Likutay Tefillos, and a little food - bread and oranges - because I was then fasting, as stated above. EN: I then went with several other men, and we sat in an automobile filled with gentiles. They all wondered where we were traveling along that road in the darkness of night, while “my knees knocked one against another” from fear. We came to Rachel’s Tomb and knocked on the door. The shamash opened it for us, for he had been there since before nightfall and was waiting for us. EN: I recited the Tikkun Haklali and engaged in hisbodedus and prayer, and the other men did likewise. We prayed Maariv with concentration. I then washed my hands for the meal and ate the aforementioned meal after the fast. The shamash made coffee and gave us some to drink, as well as a little brandy with which to say lechaim. After eating, we applied ourselves to our service of hisbodedus and prayer. EN: In the middle of the night someone knocked at the door, and we were frightened. We asked who it was. They answered us in Arabic; we opened, and there stood Keter (an attorney), whose mind was confused and who was called “the baal teshuvah.” Apparently he had learned that we were remaining awake there that night, and he too came alone in the middle of the night. He ate there and afterward joined in the study and prayer. He also related that during that week he had been alone in Hebron at the Cave of Machpelah. Later, while we were traveling back to the city, he also related that he was occupied with securing permission to travel to Uman, to the tziyun of our holy Rabbainu. EN: The gentiles also told us that during that week, when it had been their New Year (which they call “Naya Yar”), nighttime travel had been permitted (because the special emergency restrictions were not then in force on its account). Several people had come in the middle of the night, traveling to Rachel’s Tomb in a gentile automobile. They found the door closed and remained outside throughout the night, occupying themselves there with prayer. EN: Baruch Hashem, the night passed over us in Torah study and prayer, and I derived great vitality from it. As soon as we began the service of Hashem, I no longer felt any of the fear I had experienced beforehand. Before midnight several men lay down to sleep until Chatzos. EN: But several men and I sat and studied until Chatzos the Tikkun Kares printed in the Sephardic books: Mishnayos Kerisos; the tractates whose initial letters form Chaim - Chullin, Yoma, Yadayim, and Meilah; other such passages; and Zohar, etc. The order was that one person recited a chapter and the others listened; then a second person recited, and so did all of them, after which the cycle began again until we completed the order. At that time I felt ill with severe abdominal pain, to the point that I could not sit in any manner. I therefore chose a place near the holy tziyun and lay down there. I lay upon the bench with my eyes lifted toward the holy tziyun, amid prayer, hisbodedus, verbal confession, and cleaving to Godliness. EN: In sum, I did not fall asleep at all throughout the night. I occupied myself throughout the night only with hisbodedus, desire, longing, and yearning for Hashem, while lying on the bench because of the aforementioned abdominal pain. Although I experienced suffering and anguish from the pain and illness, all of it was worthwhile because of the vitality I had and because I had merited seizing such goodness.
