EN: I yearned and longed exceedingly to be in Meron during this month, at the tziyun of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, amen, because my birthday falls in this month, on the sixteenth of Shevat. It is certainly auspicious and beneficial for me to be there on that day and to increase my service of Hashem. EN: In particular, the fourteenth of Shevat is Erev Rosh Hashanah LaIlanos [the New Year for Trees] (for man is a tree of the field); the fifteenth is Rosh Hashanah, and the sixteenth is my own Rosh Hashanah. It is known that being at home is in no way comparable to making a journey to a holy place, for there the entire matter is different: one bears no yoke other than Torah and divine service. This is especially so in Meron, which is literally an aspect of the World to Come and an aspect of complete self-nullification from the vanities of this world. One sees no person and hears nothing concerning the affairs of this world, but only matters of the service of Hashem. From afar one sees the lofty and beautiful mountains, filled with grace and especially conducive to hisbodedus. In sum, nowhere in this entire world is there a place so conducive to the service of Hashem as holy and awe-inspiring Meron. As for the vitality I experience there in the service of Hashem whenever I come, would that in the World to Come, at least, I might possess no less vitality and delight than I have there. EN: Especially when I merit more there, the vitality and delight that I experience in the service of Hashem are beyond estimation or appraisal. It is certainly worthwhile to break every hindrance in the world for the sake of a single moment there, for it is literally Gan Eden. This is particularly so in light of what we have seen recently: it had been impossible under any circumstances to be there, for during several years it was closed and sealed because of the pogroms. Even on Lag BaOmer, after all the trouble and exertion, everyone came there together with the government authorities for only a few hours. EN: Then we saw how holy and auspicious this place is, and we yearned and longed: how could we merit it? Since it was so exceedingly difficult and utterly impossible to reach there with ease, it was surely worthwhile - exceedingly worthwhile - to exert every power to be there. On the contrary, now it would be even better, for there one can attain an aspect of genuine hisbodedus, seeing only heaven and earth. When it was impossible to travel there, we would think that now we ought already to have enough sense: whenever Hashem helps and a time comes in which travel there is possible, we must gird all our strength to be there many times. EN: This was especially so during the days of Shovavim, which are auspicious for repentance; especially on the fifteenth of Shevat, which is Rosh Hashanah as stated above; especially because it was close to my birthday; and especially because the members of our fellowship had already merited being there several times during this period. Although I had merited being there before Chanukah, I had then remained for only one night. EN: Therefore, how greatly my soul pined to merit being there! I yearned and longed exceedingly to merit this. Apart from the financial hindrances, however, one cannot travel alone, for several people must travel together so that the shamash from Safed will agree to accompany them. I therefore began looking for someone with whom to travel who would leave my mind at ease and would not disturb my service there. I spoke about this with one of the newly drawn members of our fellowship, and he told me that his birthday too was on the nineteenth of Shevat. He was therefore certainly prepared to travel and be there at that time. Several weeks passed during which we yearned and longed for this, but the hindrance was lack of money. EN: Although we had resolved between ourselves to keep the matter secret even from all the members of our fellowship, because we had to secure money for the expenses we were compelled to reveal it to the man who had previously lent me money, as stated above. I asked him to provide me with the expenses on this occasion as he had then. Several days passed before the idea began to enter his mind - that he himself also wished to travel with us, even though he had been there not long before, and in the end he promised to provide me with the expenses. EN: Consequently, the matter became known among the other members of our fellowship, and several others among them were then aroused to travel as well. Although they did not have money for the expenses, they nevertheless yearned and longed for this and sought counsel as to how they might obtain the money to travel. Throughout this entire period I spoke with him every day and urged him to see to the money for me as well. That week arrived, and I pressed him still more. Thus the time passed until Tuesday of Parashas Yisro. EN: We all traveled together and came to Egged. He bought for me as well a round-trip ticket as far as Haifa, while the others bought their own tickets. We sat together on the large Egged bus traveling to Tel Aviv and chose a suitable place where we would not be seated among women. We recited Tefillas HaDerech; I also recited the Tikkun Haklali and Psalms; and we spoke about the service of Hashem. EN: One of the members of our fellowship traveling with us, R.M., urged us not to interrupt our thought of the original purpose for which we were traveling. It is the way of the Baal Davar [Adversary] to interfere in the midst of one's yearnings and longings and to preoccupy the mind with other things seen along the road, so that thought is diverted from the innermost point in the heart that longs for the holy undertaking one wishes to perform. Then, even when one comes to perform that holy undertaking, one's fervor and longing have already cooled; and even if one performs it, one does so without vitality, merely from compulsion. One must therefore be exceedingly careful throughout the entire time to confine the mind solely to the holy undertaking one wishes to perform and to keep it so confined that it does not stray to other matters. EN: Baruch Hashem, we had a good and pleasant journey. Throughout the entire way from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv we spoke only about the service of Hashem and rejoiced greatly. We sang the song Bar Yochai and danced, and sang other melodies and songs. All the people traveling on the bus were greatly impressed, and many of them purchased copies of the Tikkun Haklali. EN: We also spoke extensively with the people about the service of Hashem and the ultimate purpose: nothing remains of a person except what he manages to seize in the service of Hashem. Even in this world, which is filled with suffering and pain for every individual, there is nothing at all with which to sustain oneself except the service of Hashem; through it one feels great vitality even in this world, and one loses nothing in this transitory world by conducting oneself with proper observance. Particularly today, everyone sees this tangibly. As expressed in Yiddish: "Hot men nit vos tzu loyfn; afilu der grester gevir, der grester olam-hazehnik, bein yom uvein laylah avad, rachmana litzlan" (even in pursuing this world there is nothing to run after; even the wealthiest man, even the one who most intensely pursues the desires of this world, as we see, can be lost between day and night - may the Merciful One save us). EN: There is no true fortitude except through emunah: if one has emunah, one has the strength to endure all that passes over him, to accept it joyfully, and to pass through everything, and Hashem helps him. If, however, one does not conduct oneself properly, what does one gain from it? Apart from the fact that when the day of death arrives everything is forgotten and one does not take the pleasures and vanities of this world with him to the grave, it is, on the contrary, exceedingly bitter and difficult for him to leave this world and its pleasures and go to the grave, where all of it ends and is lost to him. His entire body, which he had stuffed, becomes putrid and foul; worms crawl through it and consume it - and that is all. EN: This would be so even if all his days passed filled with pleasures, without any pain or suffering. Yet it is altogether impossible that there should have been any such person in the world from the day of Creation - one who possessed every pleasure of this world without any pain or suffering. Only the great tzaddikim, whose entire vitality is the service of Hashem, experience, on the contrary, wondrous delight from all the suffering and pain that passes over them. EN: Even ordinary upright people who observe the Torah and possess emunah - although troubles pass over them as well - at least believe in Hashem and have something with which to sustain themselves even in the midst of pain, for they believe that everything is for their benefit. They also have the counsel of crying out and praying to Hashem, thereby diverting the pain from their hearts. In truth, Hashem helps and delivers one from distress, and there is fulfilled: "From distress, may He bring them redemption and relief." EN: Particularly in these days, we see with our own eyes that many wealthy and honored magnates became, in a single moment, what they became - may Hashem preserve us. There is therefore surely nothing to lose by observing the Torah. In particular, the matter is not difficult, nor is it in heaven; rather, it is exceedingly near. The Torah was not given to ministering angels, and the Holy One, blessed be He, does not deal tyrannically with His creatures. The Torah is a matter suited equally to every person; and if a person is ill, there are already other laws. EN: What does it cost a person to recite a blessing over what he eats, to observe Shabbos and the other mitzvos, etc.? We spoke such words concerning the service of Hashem, and the people traveling then derived great pleasure from them. Thus this entire journey passed over us amid joy, songs, and words concerning the service of Hashem. EN: We arrived in Tel Aviv and immediately transferred to the bus traveling to Haifa. On that bus as well we did not remain quiet: we sang melodies and songs and spoke extensively about the service of Hashem. We saw that we would not reach the bus from Haifa to Safed, because it departed at two o'clock. One of us therefore alighted at Hadera and telephoned Egged in Haifa, saying that there were passengers who wished to travel to Safed and asking that the bus be delayed and wait for us. EN: This bus route from Haifa to Safed by way of Acre and Meron had been reopened only recently, after having been closed and sealed for several years because of fear of the Arabs and the incidents that had occurred on that road - may Hashem preserve us. EN: Even before Chanukah, when I had been in Meron as stated above, I had been compelled to travel by way of Tiberias, because the aforementioned route had not yet been reopened. At that time there was not yet an Egged station in Safed either; rather, private individuals transported their passengers in their own automobiles and competed with Egged on the route from Safed to Haifa. By now, however, Egged had reached an arrangement with these people, taken them and their buses into the company, and established an Egged station in Safed as well. Buses now traveled regularly each day from Safed to Tiberias; in particular, they had reopened this route for daily travel from Safed to Haifa by way of Meron and Acre, and likewise from Haifa to Safed.
