Segment 1
HE:
וכן הלכנו בסדר הזה עד שבאנו סמוך למערת המכפלה והגוים רואים אותנו ואין פוצה פה ומצפצף כמובן, וכשבאנו סמוך למערת המכפלה דיבר הקצין הגבוה עם האנגלי המדבר עברית, והוא תירגם לנו כי הוא שואל כמה זמן נתאחר במערת המכפלה, והשבנו על כל פנים שעה והשיב כי הוא לא יכול רק רבע שעה, והשבנו כי זה לא יכול להיות וגם דברו עם מר קיסילוב בירושלים איזה שעות.

We proceeded in this formation until we drew near the Cave of Machpelah. The gentiles saw us, and naturally no one opened his mouth or uttered a sound. והשיב כי בירושלים הוא יש לו הדיעה ופה אצלינו הדיעה וכן אין להם זמן להתעכב הרבה וכו׳, והשבנו לו בבקשה ובתחנונים הלא אנחנו מוכרחים גם לבקש עבור הממשלה ולעשות הנותן תשועה, וצריך לשהות איזה זמן לבקש רחמים ותחנונים על הכל.

He replied, "In Jerusalem, he has the say; here, we have the say, and we do not have time to remain for long, etc." We answered him with requests and supplications: we were also obliged to pray on behalf of the government and to recite Hanosen Teshuah [Who Grants Salvation], and we needed time to beseech mercy and offer supplications on behalf of everyone.

והשיב כי חצי שעה יחכה אתנו שם והסכמנו על זה, וכן הלכנו הלאה עד שהגענו למערת המכפלה ודברו הם עם השיכים עד כמה מדרגות רשאים היהודים לילך, והשיבו עד שבעה כנהוג וכן עלינו עד שבעה המדרגות, ואמרנו תיקון הכללי ותפילה של ל״ג בעומר המוזכר שם מישיני מכפלה וכו׳ ותפלות של פדיון וגם התבודדות ובקשת רחמים עבור הכלל והפרט. והכלל שנתעכבנו שם סמוך לשעה, ועשינו הנותן תשועה עבור המלך מאנגליה בקול רם וענו הכל אמן על זה, ונשקנו האבנים ויצאנו חוץ כסדר הנ״ל, וגם השמש דמערת המכפלה הלך אתנו וביקש מאתנו שילך להראות לנו מקומות הקדושים, וענינו שאנחנו לא צריכים לו ולא רצה להפרד מאתנו ריקם ונתנו לו איזה גרוש ונפרד מאתנו.

He replied that he would wait there with us for half an hour, and we agreed. We proceeded until we reached the Cave of Machpelah, where the officers spoke with the sheikhs concerning how many steps Jews were permitted to ascend. We therefore ascended the seven steps and recited the Tikkun Haklali and the prayer for Lag BaOmer in which the "sleepers of Machpelah" are mentioned, etc., as well as prayers of pidyon [redemption], hisbodedus, and pleas for mercy on behalf of the community and the individual. In sum, we remained there for nearly an hour. We recited Hanosen Teshuah on behalf of the King of England in a loud voice, and everyone answered Amen. We kissed the stones and went outside in the same formation as before. The shamash of the Cave of Machpelah accompanied us and asked to go with us in order to show us the holy places. We answered that we did not require his services, but he did not wish to part from us empty-handed; we therefore gave him several grush, and he left us.

ואנחנו הלכנו הלאה עד שנכנסנו לחצר אבנר בן נר ששם הציון הקדוש של אבנר בן נר בתוך בית והמפתח אצל ערבי שגר שם בבית השני, ונכנסנו כלנו לחצר ודיברו עם הערבי שיתן המפתח וביקש גרוש מכל אחד ולא רצינו ליתן, ואמר לי המדבר עברית הנ״ל כי יקח מאתנו חצי גרוש לכל אחד, אבל אני יעצתי אותם כי זה גם כן כמה שילינג ואינו כדאי למסור לערל הזה בשביל מעט ליכנס ושנבקש פה בחוץ בקשתינו, וכן עשינו והלכנו משם חזרה עד חוץ להעיר על בית הקברות.

EN:
We continued until we entered the courtyard of Avner ben Ner. The holy tziyun of Avner ben Ner is inside a house there, and its key was held by an Arab who lived in the neighboring house. We all entered the courtyard and spoke with the Arab, asking him to provide the key. He demanded one grush from each person, and we refused to pay it. The aforementioned Englishman who spoke Hebrew told me that the man would take half a grush from each person. I advised the others that even this would total several shillings and that it was not worthwhile to hand the money to this arel [uncircumcised gentile] merely to enter for a brief time; we could offer our petitions outside. We did so, and then returned from there and proceeded outside the city to the cemetery.

וכן נגשנו לקבר הראשית חכמה ושדי חמד ואזולאי ז״ל ואמרנו תהלים ותפלות ובקשות, ומשם עלינו על הקברות החדש של הרוגי קדושי חברון שנהרגו בפוגרומים האחרונים ונכנסנו לשם והם חיכו בחוץ(, והאנגלי המדבר עברית נתן להבין להקצין הגבוה מהו הקברים האלו וכו׳), ואמרנו אב הרחמים ואל מלא רחמים ובקשנו שבזכותם יושיע השי״ת אותנו בכל הישועות.

EN:
We approached the graves of the Reishis Chochmah, the Sdei Chemed, and Azulai, of blessed memory, and recited Psalms, prayers, and supplications. From there we ascended to the new cemetery containing the graves of the holy martyrs of Hebron who had been killed in the recent pogroms. We entered, while our escorts waited outside (and the Englishman who spoke Hebrew explained to the senior officer what these graves were, etc.). We recited Av Harachamim and El Malei Rachamim and asked that, in their merit, Hashem grant us every salvation.

וגם היה לנו עגמת נפש רב לראות קברי הקדושים האלו שנהרגו ונטבחו על קידוש השם, אשר ממש פחד וזעזוע לראות את זאת ה׳ ינקום דמם.

We also experienced profound anguish upon seeing the graves of these holy martyrs, who had been killed and slaughtered al kiddush Hashem [for the sanctification of God's Name]. The sight truly inspired fear and trembling. May Hashem avenge their blood.

Segment 7
HE:
והנה הם שאלו אותנו אם רוצים לילך על עוד איזה מקום ואמרנו שיש עוד קבר ישי אבי דוד, אבל לא ידוע לנו ואין לנו מי שיראה לנו ועל כן מוכרחים לחזור, וחזרנו עמהם העירה חברון והם נפרדו מאתנו בפרישת שלום ואהבה ורעות.

EN:
They asked us whether we wished to visit any other place. We replied that there was also the tomb of Jesse, the father of David, but we did not know its location and had no one to show it to us; we were therefore compelled to return. We returned with them into the city of Hebron, where they took leave of us with greetings, affection, and goodwill.

Segment 8
HE:
והאטו כבר חיכה עלינו ונסע אתנו עד בית הממשלה, ועלו עליו איזה שוטרים אנגלים גבוהים מחברון ונסעו אתנו וישבו אצל הפתח, ואנחנו נסענו כל הדרך בשמחה וזמרנו כל מיני זמירות ושירים בהמחאת כף וריקודין, עד שבאנו לבריכת שלמה שהיא על הדרך ועמד האוטו ואנחנו ירדנו ונגשנו לראות את הבריכה והמים שבשם, ואחדים מאתנו ירדו איזה מדרגות ורצו לטבול שם אבל אנחנו לא הנחנום כי יתאחר הזמן.

The bus was already waiting for us and traveled with us as far as the Government House. Several high-ranking English policemen from Hebron boarded it, traveled with us, and sat at the entrance. Throughout the journey we traveled joyfully, singing all kinds of melodies and songs with clapping and dancing, until we reached Solomon's Pool along the road. The bus stopped, and we alighted and approached to look at the pool and the water there. Several of us descended a few steps and wished to immerse there, but we did not permit them to do so, lest we be delayed.

Segment 9

וכן שבנו על האוטו ונסענו עד שבאנו לקבר רחל ושם כבר היה מלא אנשים בפנים(, כי השמש כבר לקח רשיון על יום ערב ראש חודש), ועמדו שם על הדרך כמה שוטרים אנגלים ושמרו על האנשים שבאו לקבר רחל, וירדנו שם ונכנסנו לקבר רחל ואמרנו תיקון הכללי ועוד בקשות וכן שהינו שם עד ערך חצי שעה.

We returned to the bus and traveled until we reached Rachel's Tomb. By then it was already filled with people inside (for the shamash had obtained permission for Erev Rosh Chodesh). Several English policemen stood on the road there and guarded those who had come to Rachel's Tomb. We alighted, entered Rachel's Tomb, recited the Tikkun Haklali and additional supplications, and remained there for approximately half an hour.

Segment 10

All of us were compelled to return on that same bus. Nearly all of us would have been prepared to remain for several hours at Rachel's Tomb and return on another bus; but because the English policemen who had traveled with us had assumed full responsibility to bring us back to Jerusalem, we were all compelled to return and sit on the bus. Several men among us insisted somewhat, wishing to remain longer, but we did not permit them to do so, for they would thereby burden the policemen with waiting a long time for us.

Segment 11

ובכן חזרנו כלנו על האוטו עם השוטרים שחיכו עלינו(, מלבד ר׳ משה שנשאר אצל קבר רחל מפני שלא נסע אתנו יחד מירושלים, ורק מקבר רחל רדף אחרינו באוטו ערבים שנסע לחברון, ועל כן לא היה עליו אחריות להביאו חזרה לירושלים ומפני זה היה יכול להשאר אצל קבר רחל), ונסענו הלאה בשמחה וריקודין כנ״ל עד שבאנו לירושלים למקום תחנותם של האוטובוסים הערבים היינו אצל שער יפו.

We therefore all returned to the bus together with the policemen who had waited for us (apart from Rabbi Moshe, who remained at Rachel's Tomb because he had not traveled with us from Jerusalem; rather, from Rachel's Tomb he had pursued us in an Arab bus traveling to Hebron. The policemen therefore bore no responsibility to return him to Jerusalem, and for that reason he was able to remain at Rachel's Tomb). We traveled onward with joy and dancing, as stated above, until we reached the terminal of the Arab buses in Jerusalem, at Jaffa Gate.

Segment 12

ורצה הנהג הערבי להורידנו שם ולהפטר מאתנו אבל השוטרים האנגלים לא הניחו אותו בשום אופן, ואף על פי שהוא התעקש וטען כי יעלה לו בנסיעתו הלאה עד הממשלה ולחזור הנה יעלה לו עוד בנזין, אבל הם הכריחו אותו בעל כרחו להשיבנו לבית הממשלה (משרד התנועה) למקום שלקח אותנו משם, כי הם יש להם אחריות מלאה להשיב כלנו דוקא למקום שלקחו אותנו משם במספר וחשבון כנ״ל.

EN:
The Arab driver wished to let us off there and be rid of us, but the English policemen would not permit him to do so under any circumstances. Although he protested and argued that continuing to the government building and then returning there would cost him additional petrol, they compelled him against his will to return us to the government building - the Traffic Office - from which he had taken us. They bore full responsibility to return every one of us precisely to the place from which they had taken us, with every person accounted for, as stated above.

Segment 13

וכן היה שנסע אתנו עד משרד התנועה ושם ירדו השוטרים האנגלים ומסרו שהביאו אותנו כשלימות כמו שלקחו אותנו, וירדו שם האנשים שרצו לילך לשכונות שחוץ לעיר, ואותם האנשים שרצו לחזור להעיר העתיקה ישבו שם על האוטו ונסעו עם הנהג חזרה עד שער יפו וכו׳, ואנחנו נפרדנו מאת השוטרים שירדו בידידות ואהבה וכן מאת השוטרים שחיכו אותנו וקבלו פנינו שם, בידידות ורעות והכרת תודה על הגדולות והחסדים שעשו עמנו.

Thus he drove us to the Traffic Office. There the English policemen alighted and reported that they had returned the entire party, exactly as they had received us. Those who wished to go to neighborhoods outside the city alighted there, while those who wished to return to the Old City remained seated on the bus and traveled back with the driver as far as Jaffa Gate, etc. We took leave of the policemen who had alighted, parting from them with friendship and affection; likewise, we took leave of the policemen who had waited for us and received us there, with goodwill and heartfelt gratitude for the great deeds and acts of kindness they had shown us.

Segment 14

והנה כל השוטרים היהודים שהיו שם תמהו מאד ולא ידעו מה זאת, ושאלו אותנו מה זאת היה אתנו ואיפה היינו עם השוטרים, וספרנו להם שהיינו בחברון על קבר אבות וכו׳ ותמהו מאוד על המראה הזה, וכן כל האנשים שאצל קבר רחל תמהו מאד בראותם אותנו באים כנ״ל, ובפרט בחברון עצמו היה חידוש נפלא אצל כל הערבים והשוטרים בעצמם, כי עדיין לא היה כזאת שיוליכו יהודים במשמר כזה של גדולי גדולי הממשלה מסובבים מכל צד וצד ובכבוד ובנימוס כזה.

All the Jewish policemen who were present were exceedingly astonished and did not understand what had happened. They asked what had taken place with us and where we had been with the policemen. We told them that we had been in Hebron at the graves of the Patriarchs, etc., and they marveled greatly at the spectacle. All the people at Rachel's Tomb had likewise been exceedingly astonished when they saw us arrive as described above. In Hebron itself, in particular, it was an extraordinary and unprecedented sight to all the Arabs and to the policemen themselves, for nothing like this had ever occurred: Jews were escorted under such a guard, surrounded on every side by the highest government officials and treated with such honor and courtesy.

ואנחנו בעצמינו תמהנו על זה ומביטים זה על זה בתמהון מה זאת היה אתנו ממש כבוד מלכים, הלא נתקיים בנו כל ישראל בני מלכים הם, והיו מלכים אומניך וכו׳ המובא בישעיה.

EN:
We ourselves also marveled at it and looked at one another in astonishment, wondering what had happened to us. It was literally royal honor. Indeed, the words, "All Israel are children of kings," had been fulfilled in us, together with the verse in Isaiah, "Kings shall be your foster fathers," etc.

Segment 16
HE:
והנה בני הנעורים שלנו נתנו עבור כלנו תודה וברכה לממשלה בירושלים ובפרטיות לקצין המחוז מר קיסילוב, וכן תודה וברכה להממשלה שבחברון על גודל חסדם וטובם עמנו שאין לשער, והדפיסו את התודה וברכה על העתונים.

EN:
The younger members of our fellowship, on behalf of us all, offered thanks and blessing to the government in Jerusalem, and especially to the district officer, Mr. Kisilov. They likewise offered thanks and blessing to the government in Hebron for the immeasurable greatness of its kindness and goodness toward us, and they printed this expression of thanks and blessing in the newspapers.

והנה גודל הקידוש השם שהיה מנסיעתנו אין לשער ולהעריך, ממש מי ששומע זאת לא יכול להאמין כזאת, וכל מי שראה אותי אחר כך ברחוב וכו׳ שאלו אותי האם אתה גם כן היית בחברון ואיך היה המעשה והוכרחתי לספר וכו׳, וזמן רב אחר כך ותהום כל העיר על זאת.

The magnitude of the kiddush Hashem that resulted from our journey is beyond estimation or appraisal. Whoever heard of it could not believe such a thing.
