EN: When my friend Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh, may his lamp shine, fell ill and attributed the illness to his stays in the aforementioned hisbodedus room, since it was narrow and had harmed his health, he abandoned the room entirely. I then found courage within myself and spoke with the owner of that room, pleading with him extensively to turn it over to me for the service of Hashem. Much time passed before I succeeded in obtaining this from him. Meanwhile, I searched throughout the Batei Machaseh neighborhood in the hope of finding some room to rent. I found a large room adjoining the Batei Machaseh synagogue, near my home, and entirely private. One could enter it discreetly without anyone becoming aware of it, and it was near the route to the Western Wall. EN: In sum, I saw this house through the cracks and observed that no one lived there. It possessed all the advantages stated above. My soul, body, and spirit were consumed by longing for it, and I began asking people to whom the house belonged (I asked shrewdly as well, so that they would not understand that I wanted the house, etc.). I learned that the house belonged entirely to the elderly Rabbi Mordechai Hozdorf. He had two rooms: this room and another above it. He lived in the upper room during the summer and in the aforementioned room during the winter. The two rooms belonged entirely to him and were his property. EN: When I heard this, I almost despaired entirely of this good thing—particularly because it was then the end of the summer, in the month of Av, and he himself would need it in winter. Yet I knew Rabbainu’s teaching, of blessed memory, that there is no despair in the world at all: “Keyn yeyush iz gor nit farhandn; se tuen zikh af der velt azoyne zakhn vos mir veysn gor nit, etc.” [There is no despair at all; things occur in this world of which we know nothing.] One must therefore not despair of anything indispensable to the service of Hashem, for ultimately, through longing and desire, petition and supplication, one can merit everything one requires. EN: I therefore did not entirely cease yearning and longing for it. My soul thirsted and pined for it: when would I merit it? The matter touched me to the very soul. I said: nevertheless, I shall do my part by speaking with him and learning whether I have something for which to continue yearning or not; otherwise I shall abandon the matter entirely. My soul was consumed with longing for it, and I could not bear the wasting away of my soul over it and the intensity of the yearning. EN: No opportunity arose for me to speak with him. I did not wish to go to his home to speak with him, because I was exceedingly embarrassed and likewise greatly afraid that he would dissuade me from it entirely (Er vet mir poyser-kholem zayn; er vet mir opzogn dem gantzn posuk [he would interpret my dream for me; he would reject the entire proposition]). Nor did I wish to speak with him about it in the synagogue among other people. I therefore sought an opportunity to meet him in the street and speak with him. EN: Several times even such an opportunity passed me by: I met him in the street but did not manage to speak with him. Meanwhile I longed exceedingly, my soul yearned for it, and I pleaded extensively with Hashem concerning it, for this room appeared to me highly favorable in every respect, as stated above. EN: At last, on Erev Shabbos, I found him standing at the gate of Batei Machaseh and began speaking with him about it. In my heart I regarded it as exceedingly unlikely that he would do this for me; I merely wished to bring the matter to a conclusion, to know where I stood and not delude myself without cause. I saw that he had no desire to agree, and I pressed him and spoke to him at length, arguing that the matter would be a merit for his soul, etc. EN: In sum, he answered that he would do this for me, but only for a single month. I was to understand that the moment he asked for it back, I would return it immediately without any claim or reply; I was not to regard it as my possession, but would restore it to him in full as soon as he wished. He required me to promise this, and I promised him with a full mouth and a whole heart. He told me that he would give me the key, but that it was not then in his possession. He also wished first to clean the house somewhat, for it was filled with dust and earth from the entire summer during which he had not been there, and to arrange some of his papers and belongings. EN: I left him with a joyous heart, filled with joy. I already experienced a Shabbos of joy, because I had merited hearing what I desired, and before long I would merit such a private room for the service of Hashem. Perhaps from then onward I would begin serving Hashem properly; perhaps I would now merit that which one must merit. Yet I still feared greatly that he might regret the matter and not give it to me, for I had seen that he had no desire to do so. He was also afraid that I might wish to take the house permanently and that he would then have to contend with me. At any rate, some additional time passed, and I had still not attained it, because I had not found him in the street to speak with him about this once again; and when I found him, he put me off, because he had not yet arranged his affairs and belongings. This caused me anguish and suffering. EN: Several weeks thus passed, until shortly before Rosh Chodesh Elul. Throughout that time my soul pined for this with exceeding yearning and longing, until at long last I found him in the street, spoke with him about it, and entreated him greatly. I said: “You want [it] only for a month; if you do not hasten in this matter, the month will pass, and so forth.” He then told me that in a few hours I should come to his home and he would give me the key, even though [the place] was not clean. I told him that I would hire someone to clean it. EN: And so it was. On Erev Shabbos, shortly before Rosh Chodesh Elul, I entered his home, took the key from him, and went in to see the room. My heart and soul rejoiced at what I saw: there were two rooms, arranged like one room within another, with two large windows facing the road to the Western Wall. From them one could see all of Silwan, with its fields full of green grass that delighted the eye. One could even see the tombs of the kings of the House of David, all of the Mount of Olives, and the beginning of the site of the Holy Temple, and so forth. EN: Moreover, in the room adjoining the entrance there was a projection of wall that served like an amud [prayer stand]. It was directly aligned with the synagogue and very close to it; no impure or filthy object intervened, nor was there any non-Jew in between. One could answer even Amen, Kedushah, and Barechu, and could pray together with the congregation if one heard their voices clearly. It also faced the site of the Holy of Holies. EN: The entire room had also been whitewashed with lime in a manner whose appearance awakened the heart. In sum, I left there filled with satisfaction and delight. Yet dust and dirt lay everywhere in great abundance, and cobwebs stretched from side to side, and so forth. I saw that a great deal of work would be required to clean it, and I therefore postponed this until after the holy Shabbos. Nevertheless, already on that Shabbos I was exceedingly happy; I had a Shabbos of great joy and delight, for I had merited to see that for which I had yearned and for which my soul had pined for days and years. EN: Immediately after the holy Shabbos I entered once again and examined what the house required. I then returned with my son, may his light shine. I cleared away all the cobwebs, opened the windows, and we began cleaning the dust from the house. We remained there for many hours, until we had gathered up the dust, and so forth. That day I still did not begin my service of Hashem, because when I left I could not recover my breath from the dust and dirt that had entered my mouth and chest. EN: On the following day I brought my books—nearly all of the books of Rabbainu, of blessed memory—as well as the other books I required for the service of Hashem. I also brought a kerosene lamp and a bottle of water, and so forth. I had two tables there, as well as chairs, and so forth. I began my service of Hashem, my study with my son, may his light shine, and my hitbodedus [secluded personal prayer]. I felt there a great awakening and vitality—truly a taste of Gan Eden, almost the same taste that I feel at the tziyun [holy gravesite] of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, when I experience an awakening. Yet when I left there, I could not recover my breath because of the dust and dirt that had entered my mouth, as stated above. EN: This continued throughout the week, until I hired the synagogue attendant to wash the place thoroughly with water. He did so, and this made matters somewhat easier. All the windows were also kept open day and night. Nevertheless, the air still remained somewhat saturated with dust, and so forth. I thought that perhaps it would help to whitewash the entire house anew, but this would entail greater expense; perhaps in only a few weeks I would be compelled to return the house to him, and the expense would have been in vain. I therefore left it as it was, although I cleaned it thoroughly every day.
