EN: In sum, I began to carry out my service of Hashem there, and throughout that entire month of Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance I tasted Gan Eden. I studied teachings of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and recited the prayers based upon them; I engaged in much hitbodedus and fervor. I also had a fixed study session there every day after the prayers, studying the books of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, with my son. My friend Yom Tov likewise came to me every single day in this room. We studied the teaching “Kera es Yehoshua” [“Call Yehoshua”], which discusses the kavanos [spiritual intentions] of Elul, with awakening and fervor. Afterward we separated: I remained in the room beside the entrance, where my established place was by the wall that resembled an amud, as stated above, while he went into the second room. There we engaged in hitbodedus and prayer concerning the teaching we had studied. EN: In sum, I truly lived a good life there. No one knew of it or sensed anything, for the entrance was at the side and one could conduct oneself discreetly so that no one would notice. Thus nearly the entire period passed without anyone noticing either my entrance, my departure, or my presence there. Whenever I heard people walking near the entrance—for from there one could descend to the small gate set within the large gate and go out toward the Western Wall—I would carry out my service of Hashem and my hitbodedus in a whisper, so that they would not notice. EN: Nevertheless, I did experience some disturbance from the men and women who collected charity from the people going to the Western Wall, for they sat beneath the house near the aforementioned gate. I was also disturbed by the girls who came out to play there. Downstairs there lived a very old woman who was already, as the expression goes, “past and nullified”—utterly enfeebled—and she would weep and sing. All these things disturbed me. Even so, I sought means of dealing with them. EN: Meanwhile, the owner of the narrow room in which my friend Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh practiced hitbodedus sent me his answer: he was prepared to hand the room over to me. He gave me the key, but first drew up a written agreement with me stating that I could enter it every day, that he too retained the right to enter whenever he wished, and that whenever he desired, I would be obliged to return it entirely to his authority, without any claim or objection. And so we did. EN: I took the key to that room as well, because the aforementioned Rabbi Mordechai might decide to take his house back, as he had stipulated at the outset—only for one month, as stated above. It was also useful to me at times when I was unable to remain in the aforementioned house because of the disturbances. For example, in the morning and toward evening, when the girls were at home and playing there, I would enter this narrow room and carry out my service of Hashem there until I understood that they had already gone to school. I would then reenter the aforementioned house and occupy myself there with the service of Hashem throughout the day. I also gained relief from the elderly neighbor, for they took her to the hospital. I further thought that, with Hashem’s help, winter would bring me relief from the other female neighbors as well, who had a little time each day to stand there and converse, since in winter they would be unable to stand outdoors. EN: Despite all the aforementioned disturbances, I experienced such vitality in hitbodedus that, from the time I had been imprisoned in Moscow in a separate room for seventy-two days, I had scarcely enjoyed such seclusion and hitbodedus again, save on a few occasions in Meron, and so forth. Through this I had good Days of Awe, for I prepared myself through hitbodedus, and no one knew. EN: Yet I was very afraid, for the time had arrived to return the house. I spoke with the owner about this, and he told me that there was no need yet. He could not bear to live in that house because of the neighbor who lived above it: every day refuse was thrown from the window, and so forth, and it fell into the window of the house, causing him distress. The house had therefore become repugnant to him, and he would remain through the winter in the house above. I saw that this was particular Divine Providence from Heaven, whereby this Gan Eden would remain with me, and I rejoiced over it as over all wealth. Baruch Hashem, I continued my service of Hashem in its regular order; at night too I would go there to recite Chatzos and to study with my son. EN: My friend Yom Tov then became ill—for he was a very weak man—and could no longer come to me, so I carried out my service of Hashem by myself. At that time I returned to my friend Rabbi Avraham Moshe the key to his house—the first house, which was on Jewish Street, as stated above—because I no longer needed it, and throughout this entire period I had not gone there. EN: I kept only the key to the narrow room, and I retain it to this day, for two are better than one: if one of the two were taken back, the second would at least remain to me. Moreover, when I experienced disturbances as described above, I could occupy myself there with the service of Hashem. Thus almost the entire winter passed while I experienced great vitality there. One day I met the aforementioned Rabbi Mordechai in the courtyard. He asked whether I would carry his wardrobe to Rechavia, to Meir Hozdorf, the proprietor of a pharmacy, because he wished to stay there with him; Rabbi Mordechai wanted to be there because he could no longer remain alone. I immediately did this for him, and I was greatly pleased, for I now had no remaining doubt that I would continue to have my house of hitbodedus, which was dearer to me than all wealth. EN: I met him many times in Rechavia and greeted him with friendship and affection. But the baal davar [Adversary] lies in ambush on every side. People learned of this house and began speaking with him about turning it over to them for a yeshivah. Once I met him in Rechavia and spoke with him about the house. He asked me whether the house was still in my possession, for a certain man had married off his son and had asked him to give the house to his son as a dwelling. He had given him the key so that he might inspect the house and see whether it found favor in his eyes. Apparently, however, he found another dwelling, and through this he abandoned the matter of this house.
