EN: It was not many days before a new matter arose. The righteous Mrs. Gittel, may she live—the widow of Rabbi Yisrael Kardoner, of blessed memory, and the wife of Rabbi Nosson Baitelmacher—came to me and told me that I should give her the key to Rabbi Mordechai’s house. The house was needed for a certain righteous young German woman, a friend of the aforementioned Gittel. She went every day to the Western Wall and was righteous to a wondrous degree in her service of Hashem and in her good character traits. EN: For her livelihood she worked for Rabbi Yonasan Binyamin Horowitz, the proprietor of the entire Batei Machaseh quarter, and paid lodging money to a woman in whose home she slept. The aforementioned rabbi had said that she should move into the aforementioned house of Rabbi Mordechai; he sent word to Rabbi Mordechai, who agreed and sent them to take the key from me. When I heard this, I was appalled and immeasurably distressed, for they wished to take away all my vitality entirely. In great anguish and confusion of mind, I told her that I could not hand over the key without a note from Rabbi Mordechai, and that I did not begrudge her the mitzvah she wished to perform or the share she would have in it. EN: All that night I lay in very great anguish. I felt that they wished to deprive me of the service of Hashem that I had merited in those days, the like of which I had not had for several years. For how many years had I longed for this; how much labor and exertion had it cost me; and with how much yearning and longing had I finally merited it—only for them now to wish to rob me of it. I was in very great anguish over this, but I had no recourse. I took the key and brought it to Mrs. Gittel, may she live, and said to her: “I am ready and prepared to give her the key to the house.” Yet I explained the entire matter to her: how this touched my very soul, and how my life would be no life if I lost this opportunity to have a place set apart for the service of Hashem, and so forth. EN: I told her that I could neither describe nor portray to her the magnitude of my anguish in this matter, which reached to my very soul; that, having no alternative, I would be compelled to forfeit it if this young woman wished to move in; but that she should explain to her how much harm she would thereby cause me. Moreover, the air there was in any event not good for her: it was stifling with dust and ash. Even I, when there for only a few hours, could not breathe, although all the windows were kept open day and night, summer and winter. How much more, then, would she be unable to endure sleeping and residing there day and night, summer and winter, and so forth. I therefore advised her to abandon the matter altogether. EN: Mrs. Gittel, may she live, promised me that she would speak with her, explain all this to her, and advise her to decline the house. She would reply to Rabbi Horowitz that the house was unsuitable for her. I left the key with her and once more entreated her greatly to have pity and compassion upon me and to do everything within her power so that I might remain in my house of hitbodedus as before; then I left. Several days passed. I could not conduct hitbodedus as before, and throughout those days I went about gloomy and anxious, fearing that I might no longer have a house of hitbodedus. EN: But only a few days had passed when Mrs. Gittel, may she live, brought me the keys. She told me that when she went with the young woman to inspect the house, she explained to her that the air there was not good for her and that she would needlessly deprive me of the vitality I derived from the place, and so forth. Since the young woman was righteous and pious, she agreed. She told Gittel that she looked to Hashem to provide her with a better place, so that she would not deprive me, and so forth. She also told Rabbi Horowitz that the house was unsuitable for her, so that he would not take offense at me over the matter. EN: This was glad tidings for me, and I rejoiced over it as over all wealth, for I could begin anew to make use of the place for hitbodedus, which I had already ceased for several days. Moreover, precisely through the hindrances—through their wish to take it from me and through my having seen that I was already prevented from being in this special house and from engaging in hitbodedus and the service of Hashem as before, in which I had experienced such great vitality—a taste of Gan Eden—my desire intensified more and more. As is known, while a person has this vitality and possesses the thing he desires, he does not feel so keenly the vitality he derives from it. Only when it is taken from him and withheld does he begin to sense how precious and delightful is the treasure of which he has been deprived. This is discussed in several places in Likutay Moharan, and especially in teaching 66, “Pee Shnayim BiRoochacha” [“A Double Portion of Your Spirit”], and so forth. EN: I therefore began to experience ever more strongly the delight, vitality, desire, and yearning involved in this, and I felt an even greater savor than before. I understood that I now had to guard the time and increase my service of Hashem there more and more, for sooner or later they would prevail and take this house from me. In any event, while I still had the opportunity to gain from it, I had to set my mind to seize whatever could be seized. I also had to devise and seek means of obtaining another room for hitbodedus and the service of Hashem, one that would not possess all the deficiencies of this room—in which the neighbors’ voices could be heard and thereby disturbed the service, and so forth—as stated above.
