EN: Thus I began anew to strengthen myself in the service of Hashem in this room, with yearning and longing, to turn Torah into prayer and to engage in hitbodedus. Meanwhile, the seventh of Adar drew near, and my soul desired to travel to Meron. I faced many hindrances and also lacked money, but the intensity of my yearning and desire caused me to break through all the hindrances. With great difficulty I succeeded in obtaining from one of the aforementioned members of our fellowship a loan sufficient for the journey. I also arranged with my friend Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh that we would travel together on Friday. EN: At home they accordingly prepared challahs and pieces of fish and meat for me, and so forth. I also took my Shabbos clothes and my shtreimel and departed from my home. I told my wife that I was traveling to Tel Aviv, but I was afraid to tell her that I was going to Meron. I left my home, entered Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh’s house, and waited for him. We went together to the bus, while my son, may his light shine, followed me carrying my bundle. We traveled by Egged bus, changing buses repeatedly, until we reached Meron. We found many members of our fellowship already there—amounting to several minyanim in all—as well as Rabbi Nosson Bresky, a grandson of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Rabbi Avraham, however, remained in Tzfas for Shabbos. EN: We then had a joyous Shabbos. I carried out my service of Hashem with vitality and awakening. Some provisions were also purchased in Tzfas for Shabbos, and people went into Tzfas and brought a Sefer Torah from there. The people of Tzfas did not wish to petition the governor for permission to conduct a hadlakah [ceremonial bonfire] on the night of the seventh of Adar, and so forth. They said it was better to reserve such efforts for Lag BaOmer and not trouble the authorities excessively. They were also afraid to go out without adequate government protection, and so forth. Several people said that they would come after the holy Shabbos, but they did not. EN: After the holy Shabbos, which was the night of the seventh of Adar, we debated whether or not to conduct a hadlakah. Our entire presence there was without the government’s knowledge, and the people of Tzfas had also wanted to restrain us through the government. Nevertheless, the view in favor prevailed. We went up to the roof and prepared the fire from pieces of olive wood, together with an old, thick blanket. We took olive oil, kindled the hadlakah, and danced. EN: Suddenly we saw a light in the distance moving toward us. We saw a taxi approaching the beis midrash and thought that perhaps it carried people coming from Tzfas. But when we saw that it was the police, we went inside the beis midrash. They knocked on the door, but we did not come out, for we feared that they would impose a penalty upon us, and so forth. EN: Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh, however, mustered his courage and opened the door for them. He saw that they were English policemen. They asked, “What are you doing here?” He answered, “Today is the seventh of Adar, when a hadlakah is held,” and so forth. They replied that they knew this, but had not known that we were in the beis midrash. When they saw the fire burning from afar, they had feared that Arabs might have set the beis midrash on fire, and had therefore come to investigate. They encouraged us not to fear anything and to remain there without fear, and so forth. We rejoiced that our fear had been groundless. EN: The night thus passed for us in joy, with songs and dancing in the beis midrash. In the morning we prayed. Afterward people came from Tzfas and held the hadlakah during the day, and Rabbi Avraham also came for several hours. Thus the seventh of Adar passed. I remained until the following day, Monday, but by then I was already suffering pain in my abdomen and stomach. They asked me to remain for the second Shabbos as well, which was Parashas Zachor, but I could not. They agreed among themselves to remain, but ultimately did not, for they changed their minds. EN: Nesanel Tefilinsky also set out to travel immediately after me, and we journeyed together by Egged bus. When we reached Haifa, we met the aforementioned Rabbi Nosson, and together we traveled to the Cave of Eliyahu, of blessed memory. We walked a considerable distance until we reached it and entered; each of us gave one grush, and we remained there for about an hour. (Before entering the cave, Nesanel and I first immersed in the sea near the cave.) Afterward we returned to Egged, and Nesanel and I traveled to Jerusalem. On the way I suffered greatly from having to sit near women, and so forth. EN: When I came home, my wife reprimanded me for having concealed from her that I had traveled to Meron and had not told her the truth. She said that she had learned it from someone, and so forth. No matter how much I spoke to her, it did not help, for Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh’s daughter had herself told her that she had seen me traveling with her father to Meron, and so forth. I told her that only on this occasion had I traveled to Meron as well, because it was the seventh of Adar, the hillula of Moshe Rabbainu, peace be upon him; but that Meron had not been the primary purpose of my journey. She then calmed down.
