EN: During these days I occupied myself more extensively with cleaning the house and preparing for Pesach, and so forth. At that time I also studied the subject of Pesach in the books of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Bedikas chametz then arrived on Sunday evening, with Monday being Erev Pesach. I did everything as always with regard to burning the chametz on the open lot. We also borrowed large earthenware water vessels of the kind in which wine is kept, and brought another such vessel from the storeroom that we had in Batei Ungarin. We likewise prepared water from the cistern so that we would have water for the entire festival of Pesach. We cleaned the cooking room (called the kikh [kitchen]) and placed there everything required for Pesach, such as the matzos, and so forth, and the water. Afterward we cleaned the house, while we continued eating until Erev Pesach in the small vestibule room. EN: Thus we continued in this manner through Shabbos HaGadol, until bedikas chametz. By the time of bedikas chametz, everything already had to be clean and kashered for Pesach. We therefore ate the evening meal in the courtyard after bedikas chametz. I found the search difficult, for it takes me several hours before I complete it; afterward we ate, as stated above. Yet I no longer had any pleasure in eating in this manner, since I had to watch that the crumbs did not fall upon the garments and to clean the children so that they would not bring chametz in with them; moreover, there is generally a cold wind. EN: That is also the time to arouse oneself to repentance, to search the holes and cracks for spiritual chametz as well, and to cleanse oneself of it, and so forth. In the morning we prayed early, as customary. I already ate nothing at all, for I did not deem it worthwhile to soil myself with crumbs of chametz, and so forth. EN: Afterward I still had work to do, for I had not managed to clean all the books in which we had studied throughout the year, or the siddurim in which there were crumbs; likewise, the garments and the pockets in them had to be beaten out. Several hours passed in this manner. Then came the matter of burning the chametz and thoughts of repentance, to eradicate the leaven from within oneself, and so forth. Afterward I went to have my hair cut, and to the bathhouse and mikveh in honor of Yom Tov. EN: Immediately thereafter, at midday, I went to pray Minchah at the Western Wall and to recite Seder Korban Pesach [the order of the Pesach offering]. I spent several hours in this, in reciting Tehillim, the prayers for Pesach, and the Tikkun Haklali, in hitbodedus, and in preparation for so holy a night, in which mochin de-gadlus and mochin de-katnus [expanded and constricted states of consciousness] come together, and for so holy a festival—the beginning of Israel’s drawing near to their Father in Heaven. EN: Afterward I returned home to help arrange the tables and beds in honor of the Seder, to clean the lettuce for maror and inspect it for worms, and so forth, and to purchase fine red wine. They also brought me the three matzos that Netanel had baked in his oven on Erev Pesach. We were also at Rabbi Avraham’s, may his light shine, to hear from him stories and conversations concerning Pesach, and so forth. Thus Erev Pesach passed. Afterward we went to pray Maariv in our bais midrash. Rabbi Avraham prayed with awakening and sweetness; Hallel was then recited with great awakening and wondrous fervor. Following the prayer, we engaged in dancing to Pesach melodies and to the melody “Kareiv,” and so forth. EN: We went home in joyous states of mind and gave nuts to the small children so that they would not fall asleep, as brought in the Shulchan Aruch. We arranged the chairs and tables so that we could recline upon the bed in accordance with law and ordinance. My little son, may his light shine, aged two and a half, reclined beside me, and he properly asked the “four questions” of Mah Nishtanah, which his teacher had taught him. We made Kiddush with awakening and elevation of mind. EN: We likewise recited the Haggadah in a loud voice, with intention and arousal of the heart, as brought in the words of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Nearly all of them held out until the end of the Seder, which lasted until after midnight. In particular, my son Aharon, may his light shine, recited the entire Haggadah and translated all of it into zhargon (Yiddish), with awakening. Thus, thank God, we completed the Seder with awakening, fervor, and joy of heart. EN: Some members of our fellowship went to see the Seder at Rabbi Avraham’s. Although I wished to do so, I could not, for my Seder had lasted so long and I was already tired and weary. Thus, thank God, the night passed in joy and gladness of heart, in awakening, repentance, and longing for the service of Hashem. In the morning we prayed Shacharis at vasikin in the bais midrash of Batei Machaseh. I also performed gelilah and hagbah for the Torah scroll (for I had purchased these honors there for half a year for a few grush; later, however, by Rosh Hashanah, I no longer merited to purchase them, from then until this very day). EN: We were in our bais midrash, and went together to pray Musaf at the Western Wall; Tefillas Tal was recited with sweetness. From there we ascended to the roof of our bais midrash to view the pavement of the Temple Mount. We recited “Umipnei Chata’einu” and “Melech Rachaman,” and so forth, and prayed for the rebuilding of the Temple. Afterward we went to eat the Yom Tov meal with joy and arousal of the heart. After sleeping a little, I sat with my son and also with the son of my friend Yaakov Zev, and we studied the laws of Sefirah in the Shulchan Aruch. Afterward we went to our bais midrash and prayed Minchah. EN: Afterward we ate nuts and almonds and drank wine. We engaged in dancing, melodies, and songs—particularly the very stirring melodies of Pesach, as well as the refrains from the Haggadah: “Az Rov Nissim,” “Chasal Siddur Pesach,” “Vehi Sheamdah,” “Kareiv Yom,” “Chad Gadya,” “Echad Mi Yodea,” “Adir Bimeluchah,” and so forth—with fine and beautiful melodies and songs that arouse the heart. EN: Rabbi Avraham also taught concerning Pesach and Sefirah. We remained for some time into the night, after which we prayed Maariv with awakening. We then recited the blessing over the Counting with great awakening and with yearning and longing for the service of Hashem, in the aspect of preparing for Shavuos through repentance by means of shame and recognition of one’s own lowliness, as this is discussed extensively in Likutay Halachos, and so forth. Afterward we danced to a melody for the psalm “Lamnatzeiach Binginos,” which is recited after the Counting—a melody that greatly arouses the heart. We yearned and longed intensely for Lag BaOmer—the hillula of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen—and for Shavuos, the receiving of the Torah, which is the completion of Pesach. For Pesach is the beginning; in the interval are the days of the Counting, which are like Chol HaMoed; and afterward comes Shavuos, the completion of the Yom Tov of Pesach, and so forth.
