EN: At that time I sustained myself through two things. First, it came about that I prevailed upon one of the veteran members of our fellowship—a poor man, etc.—to come and eat with me every sacred Shabbos: pashtida [kugel] and the hot dish kept warm, called cholent. I prevailed upon my wife to agree to this, and it brought me great joy because of the greatness of the mitzvah (for great is the power of the mitzvah of tzedakah, especially tzedakah on Shabbos). It also frequently resulted that through this we recited Bircas HaMazon with a zimun [the formal invitation to Grace after Meals] over a cup of blessing, for he joined me and my son, enabling us to recite zimun. EN: Second, it came about that I agreed with my friend Yaakov Zev HaKohen that I would study fixed lessons every day, free of charge, with his firstborn son, a boy of thirteen—especially for several hours on the sacred Shabbos. I began by studying together with my own son and his son the works of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and by illuminating within them the vitality that comes from drawing close to Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and from serving Hashem, etc. I long to illuminate these matters within friends and students, as stated in Likutay Moharan: every person is obligated to illuminate his own daas [holy awareness] within his friends and students. This is a great joy to me, and I drew much spiritual vitality from it. EN: Through this I also prevailed upon my friend Yaakov Zev to permit me to provide the wine for Havdalah in our beis midrash. He had generally brought his own cup of wine, but on many occasions the Havdalah had been omitted through him because he did not bring it. Segment 4 HE: ואני מעת שראיתי בכתבי האר״י ז״ל: איך שהאר״י ז״ל השתדל לקנות המצוה זו אצל אחד שהיה לו זאת החזקה להביא יין לבית המדרש על הבדלה, והאר״י ז״ל השתדל והטריח הרבה אצלו לפעול כי הוא יביא יין שלו (היינו של האר״י ז״ל) בשביל להבדיל בבית המדרש, והיה האר״י ז״ל משלם לו כל שבוע ד׳ אדומים עבור זה (מלבד הכסף שהיה קונה היין.), EN: Ever since I saw in the writings of the Arizal how the Arizal sought to acquire this mitzvah from a certain man who possessed the established privilege of bringing wine to the beis midrash for Havdalah, and how the Arizal exerted himself greatly with him so that he himself could bring his own wine—that is, the Arizal’s wine—for Havdalah in the beis midrash, while the Arizal would pay him four adumim [coins] each week for this (apart from the money with which he purchased the wine). EN: From the moment I saw this I yearned for it greatly. I economized on the wine used for Kiddush in my home so that I might bring wine to the beis midrash. Yet I did not succeed, for my friend would not permit me. I tried perhaps to do this in our beis midrash outside the city, but that too did not succeed, because someone there possessed this established privilege and likewise refused to relinquish it. I also discussed the matter with the gabbai here in Batei Machaseh, but he too told me that someone held the established privilege of providing wine for Havdalah. From the time I began studying with my friend’s son, however, my friend has yielded to me the bringing of wine for Havdalah in our beis midrash. EN: Then the bar mitzvah of the son of my friend Yaakov Zev—the boy with whom I was studying, as stated above—drew near. My friend Yaakov Zev asked me to give him the bar-mitzvah discourse I had prepared from Likutay Halachos for my own son, may his lamp shine, so that his son could deliver it at the meal, in addition to delivering the pilpul discourse, etc. I did so and handed it to him. I also searched in the Zohar Chadash and found there an account of the greatness of a bar mitzvah: on the day a youth becomes thirteen he is given a new neshama. It also records the account of Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit protect us, and his bar mitzvah, etc. I gave this to my friend so that he could study it with his son, enabling the boy to know it and be awakened by it. EN: Then came the Shabbos preceding the bar mitzvah, and the boy was given Maftir, as is customary. On Sunday they already began the preparations. My wife, may she live, purchased the fish outside the city and brought them into the city. She also helped greatly during the day with the cooking, preparation, and baking, and likewise at night. She did so because, when the bar-mitzvah boy had been dangerously ill—Heaven forbid—with typhus, she had said that she would help in this way. They had taken him to the hospital, where he lay for several weeks in grave danger; at that time I pleaded very, very much with Hashem for his recovery, with tears. EN: In particular, at the time of the bris of my younger son, may his lamp shine, when my wife was in Hadassah after giving birth, I held a Sholom Zachor on that Shabbos, as is customary, and the wife of my friend Yaakov Zev prepared the pashtida and distributed it, as is customary. At the bris as well, my friend Yaakov Zev urged me to pray for the boy, and I pleaded for abundant mercy on his behalf. My wife too said that, with Hashem’s help, she would assist the boy’s mother in preparing, baking, and cooking for the bar mitzvah; and she fulfilled this. (It was a source of joy and gladness to me that my wife, who had previously opposed my speaking with my friend Yaakov Zev—and this had been one of her principal conditions—now that we were neighbors, lived in peace and love with her neighbor, the wife of my friend Yaakov Zev, and helped her like a sister.) EN: Thus they continued their preparations until Tuesday, the day of the bar mitzvah. That night, at midnight, his father took him to the Western Wall; on the preceding day he had gone to Shimon HaTzaddik, etc. In the morning his father prayed vasikin at Batei Machaseh. He then brought his son to our beis midrash and helped him don Tefillin. I too went there for his sake. They distributed lekach [cake] and schnapps, etc., danced, and afterward everyone went home. EN: My friend Yaakov Zev asked me to come to his home, remain with the boy for most of the day, and study with him. But when I arrived there (I also brought him as a gift all the books I had published—namely, the finest edition of Likutay Moharan, Sichos VeSipurim [Conversations and Stories], etc.), I saw that the house was filled with female relatives who had come, and I immediately left. In the afternoon, however, I went to pray Minchah at the Western Wall. I already saw there many members of our fellowship from outside the city who had come; they had prayed Minchah at the Western Wall, as had Rabbi Avraham, may his lamp shine, and had already gone to the bar-mitzvah home. EN: I was delayed at the Western Wall. Meanwhile some of the newer members of our fellowship, who had only recently drawn close, came from the Shaarei Chesed neighborhood—especially my friend Yom Tov, may his lamp shine, who is bound to me with bonds of love (about whom I have much to relate). We prayed Minchah, and I urged him to come to the bar mitzvah as well, for it was worthwhile to see all the members of our fellowship gathered together, with the joy and dancing, etc. I went with him. When we reached the house, it was filled with people: other residents of Batei Machaseh and the rabbis; the boy’s friends and his teacher; and members of our fellowship from both outside and inside the city. EN: We sat at one table with members of our fellowship who were our friends, washed for the meal, and ate. (The eating itself quite literally revived me, because for several days neither I, my wife, nor the children had eaten any cooked food or anything hot; even bread we had only in the most meager measure because of our straits. Prices had risen, we were already burdened with earlier debts, and we could no longer obtain loans, etc.) Meanwhile the bar-mitzvah boy delivered his pilpul discourse, and his cheder classmates sang repeatedly. Then we danced. Toward evening other newer adherents and other people came for the meal and prayed Minchah there. We recited Bircas HaMazon and returned home, while they remained until night. EN: Meanwhile my elder son, may his lamp shine, also came from the Talmud Torah, as did my second son, may his lamp shine; they too went to the meal. Although my wife, may she live, always prevented them from eating and deriving enjoyment at other people’s tables at any feast whatsoever, she did not now prevent them, because of her great pity for them: for several days they had tasted no food because of our straits, and at home they had nothing for the evening meal. Therefore she did not prevent them. EN: But her heart roared within her and her eyes filled with tears over this. Even beforehand our circumstances had been straitened, for we had virtually no livelihood. The children were tender and needed to be strengthened and brought to health, especially the little one. His birth had left me in debt (apart from the earlier debts). My wife, may she live, was weak and ill and had no milk with which to nurse him, so we had to sustain him with milk and other costly foods, as such a child requires. Thus even previously our income was certainly insufficient. All the more so with the outbreak of the war, when prices rose enormously and continued climbing to more than double; even at those prices goods could not be found. Nearly everyone had laid in provisions for themselves, but I could not prepare anything at all because of my monetary debts, nor could I press people to sell to me as others did, etc. EN: Besides all this, neither I nor my wife intended to make preparations at all, because we wished to share in the suffering of Yisrael. Such things were passing over the Jews in Poland—and should we provision ourselves?! At least we would feel, Heaven forbid, the suffering of Yisrael by experiencing the high prices and scarcity. Moreover, mercy was needed for us collectively, lest we, Heaven forbid, come to be like Poland (for everyone then thought that immediately after Germany finished with Poland it would do the same in Eretz Yisrael). “He Who gives life gives sustenance.” Our sorrow concerned only the present—that now we had nothing to eat—and not the future, etc.
