EN: Now (from Pesach onward, the matter of Lag BaOmer and of our being in Meron at the holy tziyun [holy gravesite], and so forth, already begins to burn within our minds; we already yearn and long for it with all heart and soul and prepare ourselves for it in body and soul, and so forth), the matter of Lag BaOmer began to burn in our minds more and more intensely, together with the question of how matters would unfold. For several years we had not merited to be in Meron on Lag BaOmer, save for a few hours during the day together with the government authorities. EN: At present we were hoping to merit being there both for Shabbos and for Lag BaOmer. Presumably there would be very many people. Although, on the one hand, I was glad that there would be more people—for the joy, awakening, and holiness are correspondingly greater, since “In a multitude of people is the glory of the King,” and the few who perform a mitzvah are not comparable to the many; certainly, the more people there are, the more there is in which to delight, to see, and from which to receive vitality—on the other hand, the wanderings are more difficult. EN: In particular, I felt that I was lacking in physical strength, while I was accustomed to spend all the days of my stay in Meron at the holy tziyun, by day and by night. There were my eating and drinking, my sleeping, my Torah study, and my prayer—all there. I left it only for my needs and also to go to the mikveh, and so forth. EN: In general, it is exceedingly difficult then to go out and come in, because the crowding is very great and there are also disturbances from people. Although for me everything is worthwhile, one literally sees there the phenomenon of “the little containing the much,” for—“Ben Poras Yosef” [“Yosef is a fruitful son,” a conventional invocation against the evil eye]—many thousands of men, women, and children—“Ben Poras Yosef”—dwell there for several days and nights; yet no person ever said, “The place is too narrow for me to lodge there,” and so forth. EN: Yet before one merits to enter into the holiness—and likewise regarding every Yom Tov, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur—I am anxious, and it is difficult for my mind to encompass how I will merit to receive these holy days, to attain through them what can be attained, and to break the obstacles: both obstacles of mind and heart and obstacles arising from bodily weakness. For such is the way of the baal davar [Adversary], who makes matters burdensome for a person at the beginning of a service. This is the meaning of the great importance of the beginning of every matter: the beginning is the essential thing, for it is exceedingly difficult; afterward the matter becomes easy, and Hashem, blessed be He, helps. EN: Particularly when I remembered that the journey to Meron for Lag BaOmer was approaching, the weight of the matter was beyond description. I worried whether I would be able to merit it, in accordance with the greatness of the matter and the magnitude of the toil and wandering. It touched my very soul: who knew whether I would readily be able to secure a place near the holy tziyun without disturbance? And concerning bodily weakness, what if, Heaven forbid, I would repeatedly need to go out for my needs, which is exceedingly difficult there amid such a multitude? Who knew whether I would have an awakening of the heart for the service of Hashem, without hindrances, or whether my heart might be hard as stone? EN: As Rabbainu, of blessed memory, brings in Likutay Moharan: after one has already broken all the obstacles preventing him from coming to the tzadik and has merited to come, there may yet be obstacles of mind and heart, so that his mind and heart remain distant. Similarly, after he breaks all the obstacles to prayer and has merited to pray, obstacles of the heart may then intensify, leaving him without desire, fervor, or heart for divine service and prayer. These obstacles are the most difficult of all, and so forth. EN: Therefore, until I actually merit to perform the service (then I am already joyful, and especially after I have performed it I rejoice all the more that I have already merited to seize it), I am distressed and anxious: who knows, who knows, whether I will merit this and pass through the service safely, both physically and spiritually? This is especially so when the Days of Awe approach, and most especially when Lag BaOmer approaches, and so forth. It was all the more so because this year I had to make peyos for my son, may his light shine, in what is called a chalakah [first haircut]. This was the first time that I sought to merit making his peyos in Meron, at the holy tziyun, on Lag BaOmer. EN: My eldest son, may his light shine, had not been under my authority, for at that time I was separated from my wife, and they made his peyos at Shimon HaTzadik in Jerusalem. With my son Aharon, may his light shine, I likewise did not merit it, because at that time it was exceedingly dangerous to travel on account of fear of the Arabs, who were shooting even within the city itself, and certainly on the roads. I was therefore compelled to make his peyos here in our bais midrash. EN: Thus, at least with this child, I was certainly now obligated to fulfill this mitzvah brought in the writings of the Ari, of blessed memory, and in Mishnas Chassidim: it is a mitzvah to bring children to Meron, shave their hair there and make their peyos, and rejoice there with great joy, and so forth. This was all the more imperative—and all the more so—because I had made a vow concerning it, both while awake and in a dream, for we had suffered greatly in raising this child and from his weakness. (Before this child, we had suffered bitterly—may Hashem protect us henceforth—for she had miscarried once, and two souls were lost one after the other—a daughter and a son.) EN: This child suffered very, very greatly from his weakness and was in no way able to develop in health and stature as children ordinarily do. (Hashem, blessed be He, placed it in the heart of the benefactor to exert himself very greatly in assisting with the raising of this child.) In sum, much passed over us in this regard, and our hearts were greatly afraid; I therefore vowed to make his peyos in Meron, and so forth. EN: On one occasion I dreamed that the child was, may the Merciful One save us, in danger, and I suffered anguish. In the dream I vowed that I would make his peyos in Meron on Lag BaOmer. It is brought in the Shulchan Aruch that a vow made in a dream is more difficult to annul than a vow made while awake, for it requires ten Torah scholars, and so forth. Particularly regarding one who vows in a time of distress, some authorities hold that annulment is ineffective, and so forth. There was therefore certainly no doubt that I was compelled to take my son, may his light shine, with me to Meron. Yet how would I be able to endure all the wanderings there with him throughout the entire time, and so forth? This matter continually bored into my mind, especially now that the time was so near. I also knew that it would be very difficult for me to prevail upon my wife, may she live, to entrust the child to me, and so forth. EN: In sum, I began to bring the matter from potential into actuality—from thought into speech. The moment I began to speak of it at home with my wife, may she live, she answered with an absolute refusal: I was not even to think of it, much less speak of it, for it would not happen under any circumstances; rather, I too would remain here and make his peyos here in Jerusalem. I replied that this could not be under any circumstances, whatever might be, for I was compelled to fulfill my vow, as stated above. EN: After several days had passed in arguments between us over this, and when she saw that it was in no way within her power to prevent me—neither by persuasion nor by coercion, neither with my consent nor against my will—she began saying that there was no solution except for her to travel with the children as well. She would under no circumstances allow me to travel with the child; rather, she herself would have to travel. There was nowhere in Jerusalem to leave the remaining children, so all of us would have to travel.
