EN: When I heard this, the proposal found favor in my heart, for I saw that I would in no other manner succeed, as stated above. Having no alternative, I was certainly very satisfied with it, for all of them would merit such true and eternal happiness and riches, the like of which scarcely exists in the world. (Even at any point during what subsequently transpired, as will be explained below, I did not regret our journey, and so forth.) None of them had yet merited even once to be in Meron on Lag BaOmer. EN: Beyond my faith in the greatness and significance of a person’s meriting to be in Meron on Lag BaOmer, the day of the hillula—when Rabbi Shimon, of righteous and blessed memory, certainly labors for that person’s rectification and attends to his welfare, and one can accomplish whatever one needs—beyond this, I greatly desired, yearned, and longed to fulfill what is brought in the writings of the Ari, of blessed memory, and in Mishnas Chassidim: to travel with the entire household as though to a wedding. EN: The Arizal did likewise: he traveled with his entire household and remained there for three days in feasting and joy, and so forth. I had never yet merited this on any occasion, and who knew whether I would ever merit it again? This was especially so because I had seen that for several years no person had been able to merit being in Meron, on account of the pogroms and particularly the fears that then passed over us. This was the time when we heard that Hitler—may his name be blotted out—had conquered France and was boasting concerning Eretz Yisrael as well. Therefore, when there was now an opportune time in which it was possible to travel, this was certainly the time to seize such true and eternal happiness and riches, so that all of us would be in Meron on Lag BaOmer. In particular, I then felt very strongly the greatness, power, and sweetness of this matter, because for several years we had been entirely prevented from it and had already utterly despaired of ever again meriting it and the joy that we had always merited. EN: Accordingly, the desire and yearning certainly intensified more and more. All the more—and all the more so—was this the case because everyone was already frightened by the events of the time and the dangers, and each individual certainly required great mercies. Thus, I certainly had no counsel other than that all of us should specifically appear before the master, the divine Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, on the day of his hillula, so that he would plead for mercy on our behalf, and so forth. EN: Beyond all the above, I intensely yearned and longed that, quite simply, they should all be awakened: they would behold such a holy and awesome matter as they had never seen, and hearing is not comparable to seeing; a person is moved and awakened through seeing. The awakening, tears, repentance, joy, and so forth would certainly remain in their memory for all the days of their lives. Now was the proper time for this, because at present there was no alternative and everyone agreed and desired it wholeheartedly (whereas at another time she would never agree to it). EN: Thus, from every perspective I saw that now was the time to seize it. In particular, our own heart told us (unzer harts hot unz gezogt [our heart told us]) that judgments were intensifying upon us—may the Merciful One save us—and our mazal [spiritual fortune] foresaw that we needed to hide and take shelter beneath the shadow of the wings of the tzadik who guides the entire world. (As is brought in the holy Zohar, Rabbi Shimon is in the grave and guides the world, and so forth.) It was for this very reason that my wife agreed to the journey. EN: She likewise refused under any circumstances to remain anywhere in Tzfas or Tiberias, and so forth, but only with Rabbi Shimon. In truth, this was our miracle: we hid ourselves beneath the shadow of the tzadik’s wings and took for ourselves such a guarantor, that he would stand surety for us. EN: Were it not for the merit of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, who knows what would have happened to the child? As could tangibly be seen, at that time everyone argued against me that he had become ill because of the journey. Hashem, blessed be He, helped, and before everyone’s eyes he remained alive through great miracles, so that we nearly witnessed the resurrection of the dead with our own eyes. In this year, however, owing to our many sins, there was no basis for the argument that the girl, of blessed memory, had become ill because of a journey, for they had not traveled at all. Even during her illness she had been far closer to life than the aforementioned child; nevertheless, in the end, owing to our many sins, she passed away—may Hashem protect us henceforth. In particular, I heard that many other members of our fellowship were likewise prepared to take their entire households with them, and so forth. EN: In sum, we resolved that, with the help of Hashem, blessed be He, all of us would certainly travel together to Meron and all remain there—even with self-sacrifice, whatever might be. Although in the eyes of the world it was great foolishness to undertake such a journey at such a time, when no one knew what the day might bring in connection with the war, and particularly since it was then reported that the danger was great and heavenly mercy was required—what greater foolishness could there be than for all of us to travel together, when all roads are presumed dangerous? EN: Nevertheless, we resolved that, with the help of Hashem, blessed be He, we would travel, whatever might be. We said only that we would not set out far in advance of Lag BaOmer, but would wait until the final days before Lag BaOmer; if it were at all possible and they permitted travel, we would journey, with Hashem’s help. EN: This was our decision. Although my heart was afraid and anxious—how could I place my wife and the children in danger? As for myself, this was not the first time I had endangered myself for the service of Hashem, but how could one endanger everyone together?—nevertheless, the intensity of the yearning and longing, the strength of my faith in the tzadik, whose merit is great and exalted, and the principle that Rabbi Shimon is worthy to be relied upon in a time of exigency brought all this about in my heart, even though, from one perspective, I remained worried and afraid. EN: Once we had firmly resolved that, with Hashem’s help, we would travel together, it still distressed me to think how we could endure such extensive wanderings for several days with small children. Every year it was exceedingly difficult for me alone and entailed self-sacrifice; moreover, because of the burden they would place upon me, I certainly would not be able to spend my time there solely at the holy tziyun in divine service, as stated above. Nevertheless, I was ready and prepared for it, whatever might pass over me. EN: Yet in my heart I was greatly anxious and wished that we had already passed through it and that it were already behind us. Throughout, I kept thinking that I wished Lag BaOmer were already over and that we were already on the return journey. I began thinking and speaking about how to bring the matter from potential into actuality and into practice. The essential thing, however, was lacking: from where could we obtain such a sum so that all of us could travel? We needed, at the very least, the cost of three tickets—one for me, one for my wife, and one for my eldest son, may he live—while the small children would travel with us free of charge.
