EN: I had already begun to rack my brain over this, for I did not have even the cost of the single ticket for myself, much less the cost for everyone. I began seeking means of obtaining loans, and so forth, but nothing became available until the final moment. At that time my son brought his yeshivah stipend: from the entire preceding half-year he brought one pound. Through great exertion, we ultimately succeeded in borrowing the remainder of the money, and so forth. Yet until the final moment I greatly racked my brain to devise counsel concerning this. EN: There were also many deliberations and ideas concerning the journey itself and how its arrangements should be made. My wife, may she live, held firmly that we should take a taxi together with several other people and travel directly from our home to Meron, to the courtyard of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen. We would thereby be spared a week of wandering and troubles, as well as improper sights and thoughts along the way. We could not do this, however, for we did not even have companions with whom to make such an arrangement. The principal consideration was that some members of our fellowship, together with some other Chassidim, said that they would arrange a special large bus that would travel to all the holy sites. We would thus not have to endure wandering and suffering by alighting from one bus, boarding another, waiting at Egged, and also being exposed to improper sights, and so forth, and other forms of suffering. EN: The expense would also be less than that of other transportation, and the journey would be joyful: they would sing, dance, eat, and drink along the way, and live a good life. They would also visit the holy sites in each and every city. When one travels independently, it is exceedingly difficult to visit the holy sites, particularly with one’s wife and children; afterward one must search for a place to lodge and then stand crowded in a queue in order to obtain a place on a bus. This is especially so on the return journey after Lag BaOmer, for several days may pass before one secures a place on a bus, and one may have to pay more than the ordinary fare. If, however, we traveled in one large bus chartered for us for both the outward and return journeys, we would be spared all the aforementioned troubles. We therefore concluded that there was no better arrangement than this. EN: This had already been settled in our minds, and all the members of our fellowship said that we would travel together. Nesanel undertook to arrange several buses for all of us—and he would thereby earn some money—and registered all those who wished to travel with him; they paid him an adrif [an advance payment], and so forth. I likewise registered us with him. I also stipulated that the bus should come to the gate of Batei Machseh to collect us together with our belongings and should bring us back to that same gate. The arrangement was that everyone would be collected from his home and returned to his home. EN: The matter was so firmly settled among us that it was as clear to us as the sun that we would travel together in such a bus. We therefore had no need to consider any other manner of traveling. I racked my brain only over obtaining the money for it, and also over dispelling the ideas, thoughts, and anxieties that beset me—both concerning the fears, for every day we heard how near the danger was, and concerning the wanderings that we would undergo there, as stated above. EN: Thus the two Shabbosos—Parashas Emor and Parashas Behar—together with the intervening days, passed over us. Every day we spoke extensively at home about the journey, about how everything would be arranged, and about where we would spend the Shabbos preceding Lag BaOmer, since Lag BaOmer would fall on Sunday. I thought that she would remain with the children in Tzfas for Shabbos and, after Shabbos, would travel with them to Meron and witness the hadlakah [ceremonial bonfire]; alternatively, she would come on Sunday morning, and we would perform the haircut known as the chalakah. EN: She—my wife, may she live—was adamant, however, that she would not remove her hand from mine: wherever I would be, all of us would be together. In any event, she argued, if she was traveling, was she not to be present at the hadlakah? Nor did she wish to remain by herself with my relatives in Tzfas. To be with Rabbi Shimon was better than anything else; it was only to Rabbi Shimon that she was traveling, and therefore she would not move from there from beginning to end. We made no investigation whatever into how we would travel, for there was no need: it had already been agreed that we would travel together, as stated above. EN: After the Shabbos of Parashas Behar, when the days were already very near, we still did not know how or when we would travel. We considered traveling on Wednesday or Thursday. Some spoke of traveling on Erev Shabbos: in the meantime we would prepare everything for Shabbos during Thursday, cook everything on the night preceding Friday, and set out on Friday morning with everything ready. We would then have no need to take cooking utensils, and so forth, and so forth. We were already prepared to do this. EN: The entire matter, however, proved vain and void, for it had all been mere imagination. On Wednesday we learned that our hopes had been false: no bus could be obtained in accordance with their wishes, and each person would have to travel independently as he desired. EN: The circumstances were as follows. They negotiated with Egged, but Egged was unwilling to provide a special bus, particularly at a reduced price. They therefore negotiated with Arab wagoners—that is, drivers—to provide us with special buses inexpensively. It was discussed that they would travel by the new road through the Jewish settlements, rather than by the old road through Shechem and Jenin; that the money would not be given to them until we returned, but would be deposited with the police until they brought us back, at which point the driver would receive it; and that the driver would also provide the police with a bond and guarantee on our behalf that he would do us no harm, and so forth. EN: Throughout this time they continued negotiating with Egged, in the hope that Egged might agree to provide them with a special bus, and so forth, as stated above. Their principal efforts, however, were directed toward all the Arab garages, to determine who would charge the least and agree to these conditions. Much time passed until, after the Shabbos of Parashas Behar, they secured Arab drivers willing to undertake the journey. Egged’s management, however, bestirred itself and prevailed upon the government not to permit the Arab drivers to travel in their vehicles by the Jewish road. Since they had no permission to travel by the old road, and so forth, the government now stated, after all the aforementioned efforts, that the Arabs had no permission to travel by the new road. They endeavored to have this decision rescinded, but without success. EN: Meanwhile, time continued to pass, and we still had no clear information. They said that perhaps they would be able to prevail upon Egged to provide us with a special bus together with all the aforementioned conveniences. Some also said that they would hire Arab automobiles and travel with them by the old road, provided that an arrangement would be made through the government requiring them to furnish a bond and guarantee, as stated above. EN: I was exceedingly far from accepting this, for I was afraid of them. Even in order to travel by the Jewish road we had wanted to arrange bonds and guarantees through the police, as stated above; how, then, could I place my own life and the lives of all of us together—my wife and the children, one and all—in danger, Heaven forbid? There was therefore no question of speaking or even thinking about this. Meanwhile we became exceedingly confused and did not know what to do or how to travel, particularly because we still believed that we would obtain a bus from Egged and travel together. EN: Thus even Wednesday passed, and we still did not know the outcome of the matter. Thursday was already the final time at which we could travel, for we could not leave it until Friday, amid the crowding of thousands of people; who knew where we might be compelled to spend Shabbos, and so forth? There was also the possibility that they would afterward refuse to permit travel, as in the preceding year, when those who had delayed until the eve of Lag BaOmer were not permitted by the government to travel from Haifa and Tiberias and were compelled to return. EN: We therefore had to travel at once, for there was no alternative. Yet we still did not know how to travel. We very greatly desired that many members of our fellowship should travel together, so that we would thereby be spared the extensive wanderings on the road; but in the end the matter had still not been settled, and we had to wait further. EN: I did not wish to wait any longer. If there would be a bus on Thursday morning in which we could travel together, well and good; if not, we would be compelled to travel by ourselves. (It was a miracle that we did not rely upon them and wait until Friday, for ultimately nothing at all remained of the plan, and on Friday each person was compelled to travel independently. Yet in respect of the exertion involved, the danger of being overtaken by Shabbos, and securing one’s place in Meron in advance, there is a great difference between traveling earlier and traveling on Friday, and so forth; the journey would certainly have been far more difficult for us, and so forth.) Meanwhile, the entire arrangement for traveling together with some of the members of our fellowship fell apart. We all became entangled and confused with one another—this one with that one and that one with this one—and no one knew how to tell another what he intended to do.
