EN: On Wednesday night, the eve of Thursday, we heard that some members of our fellowship would travel together by train. We, however, still did not know what to do, and our hearts inclined now in one direction and now in another. This night too passed over us in confusion of mind. Nevertheless, during the night we prepared and packed everything: the belongings and cooking utensils in sacks; our Shabbos garments and the children’s clothing; the challos, the loaves of bread that we had purchased, and the other foods; and also many oranges and grapefruits, and so forth. We packed everything into sacks, and had several sacks filled with burdens to carry. EN: In the morning we arose during the predawn watch and prepared everything. We also prayed the vasikin prayer early, and immediately after the prayer sat down together to eat the morning meal. We discussed how to travel and concluded that we were compelled to travel directly by Egged. Even though we would have to transfer in Tel Aviv and Haifa, at least each transfer would be made on the spot, and we would not have to walk far and carry the belongings—a matter exceedingly difficult for us—together with the children, and so forth. Moreover, when we arrived in Haifa by Egged, we would immediately be in position to board the Egged bus traveling to Meron. EN: If we traveled by train, we would have to haul ourselves and our belongings to the railway station and transfer at Lod in haste, amid the crowding of people running together, and so forth. In Haifa we would arrive in the Arab market and would be compelled to search for a wagon or porter to carry the belongings as far as the Egged station. The train would also arrive several hours later than the Egged bus. (On the return journey as well there would be considerable exertion, for one would be compelled to be delayed on the road for nearly an entire twenty-four-hour period, and so forth.) We would therefore certainly miss the bus that traveled to Meron at a fixed hour. EN: For me, every moment by which I might arrive earlier in Meron was exceedingly important, so that I could secure a good place for myself and a place for my household, and so forth. Particularly when the train arrived, there would be great crowding and confusion, and I would no longer find a place in which to rest. It was therefore exceedingly worthwhile for me to arrive, in the expression, ‘an hour sooner is better.’ For all these reasons, my wife, may she live, and I concluded that we should set out at once, early in the morning, on a bus departing from Egged. My eldest son, may his light shine, however, stubbornly insisted that we travel specifically by train together with other members of our fellowship, whereas we did not wish to do so, having reached the decision stated above. There was also the possibility that we would have to consign the belongings separately on the train, together with the parcels in the bagazh [baggage compartment], and that they would not permit us to board with the bundles in our hands; what would we do then, and so forth? EN: In sum, he insisted specifically upon the train, whereas we insisted specifically upon the bus, until he cried over the matter. Nor could we come to an agreement concerning the carrying of the sacks, and so forth. (This was not a good sign.) Nevertheless, we compelled him against his will to travel at once. My wife went to seek a porter who would carry the sacks and found a non-Jew; we agreed with him that he would carry them as far as Egged, for it was still too early for a bus from the Old City to the Egged station. He then went back on his word and was unwilling to carry everything; indeed, he was unable to do so. We too were therefore compelled to carry burdens, in addition to the children, may they live. I also purchased, for three grush, a thick, long, handsome, and decorated tallow candle for the young ‘groom’ of the chalakah, so that he would carry the candle while they danced with him; but we forgot it at home. EN: We left the house to begin the journey while we were angry with our son, who was dissatisfied, as stated above. In the meantime we realized that we had forgotten something at home that we needed very greatly. We did not wish to enter the house again to take it, however, because doing so is dangerous, as is brought in the Testament of Rabbi Yehudah HeChasid: when people set out on a journey, they should not return to take something they have forgotten, but should instruct another person to bring it outside to them, and so forth. EN: The non-Jew had gone ahead hurriedly with the belongings, while we did not wish to reenter the house. We asked our neighbor to go inside, but she was unwilling and delayed through indolence. In the meantime my wife, may she live, entered the house herself and took the object. This was displeasing in my eyes, but we placed our trust in Hashem that no evil would befall us, in the merit of Rabbi Shimon. I also made a pledge at the mezuzah that, with the help of Hashem, blessed be He, when we returned safely I would recite Nishmas beside the mezuzah, as this segulah [spiritual remedy] is brought in the sacred books. EN: We set out in alarm and haste and walked on foot to Egged, each of us carrying belongings, with the children at our side. My son walked with the non-Jew who was carrying the remaining belongings. Repeatedly he wished to cast the belongings down in the middle of the way so that we would give him more money, and so forth. At the Jaffa Gate he likewise said that we had hired him only as far as that point and no farther, and he wished to leave the belongings there. We suffered anguish from him and were compelled to promise him additional money until we reached Egged. (Along the way my wife purchased fish for Shabbos and held them in her hand throughout the entire journey until we reached Meron.) EN: When we reached the Egged station, I suffered somewhat in purchasing the tickets, for the attendant also wished to charge a half-fare ticket for my son Aharon, may his light shine. We stood our ground firmly and maintained that he was six years old, until we succeeded in not having to pay for him and in purchasing only three tickets: one for me, one for my wife, may she live, and one for my son Moshe, may his light shine. We purchased round-trip tickets. Afterward there was the matter of arranging the seats properly. Although I suffered somewhat in arranging them so that I would be at ease and spared both distress and blemish to the eyes, it was nevertheless not exceedingly difficult. The belongings were tied above, on the roof, among the other baggage. EN: The departure was not delayed, and the bus began to travel. I sat together with my son Moshe, may his light shine, while opposite me sat my wife with the other children. We recited Tefillas HaDerech [the Traveler’s Prayer], and I also recited the Tikun Haklali, other prayers, and hitbodedus. Throughout the journey my heart and mind were filled with yearning and longing, and also with anxieties concerning our wanderings: that we should have a good place, a place in which to rest, and that we should pass through everything safely. EN: I repeatedly thought: would that I had already merited to be on the return journey; I would already be happier—volt mir shoyn haltn tsurik-vegs [would that we were already on the way back]. I did not then know, however, that on my return I would be thousands of times sadder and more anxious than I was on this outward journey. I would then look back with envy at how good our circumstances had been during this journey, when all of us were healthy and joyful, and it had never entered our minds that on our return we would endure suffering without parallel, and so forth.
