Segment 1
HE:
והנה מפני כל זה ישבנו שם בתחנת אגד וחיכינו בכליון עיניים על האוטו למירון, ומפני שתקנו אז התקרה והכותלים של התחנה על כן ישבנו בחוץ, והחום היה גדול מאד והשמש בוער כאש(, וגם העפר שהיה מוטל שם והחמר שהיה שם לתיקון הבנין מזיק מאד לבריאות הגוף), ועם ילדים קטנים וחלושים להיות מוטל כל כך זמן בחום כזה בוודאי קשה לבריאות.

EN:
Because of all this, we remained seated at the Egged station, waiting with consuming expectation for the bus to Meron. Since the station’s ceiling and walls were then being repaired, we sat outside. The heat was exceedingly great and the sun burned like fire. (The dust that lay there, together with the mortar being used to repair the building, was also very harmful to bodily health.) Remaining there so long in such heat with small, weak children was certainly injurious to health.

Segment 2
HE:
ואפשר היינו הולכים למערת אליהו הנביא אבל מפני שקשה לילך במהירות ובאמצע היום בתוקף החום עם ילדים ובין כך נאחר את האוטו למירון, ובפרט שבאגד אמרו שיתנו עוד מעט אוטו בשביל האנשים, ועל כן ישבנו שם כיתד תקוע לבלי לזוז משם עד שניסע, וכן ישבנו איזה שעות רצופים בחום כזה עם הילדים והחפצים בחוץ, והילדים זה מרקד וזה מפזז בין עשרות אוטומובילים הנוסעים שמה והיה לנו עבודה קשה לרוץ ולתפוש כל פעם ילד מחמת האוטומובילים וכו׳.

EN:
We might have gone to the Cave of Eliyahu the Prophet, but it would have been difficult to walk quickly in the middle of the day, in the intense heat, with the children; in the meantime we might have missed the bus to Meron. In particular, Egged had said that they would shortly provide another bus for the people. We therefore sat there like a peg driven firmly in place, unwilling to move until we could travel. Thus we sat outside for several consecutive hours in such heat, with the children and the belongings. One child danced and another skipped among the dozens of automobiles moving about there, and we had the difficult task of repeatedly running after and catching a child because of the automobiles, and so forth.

Segment 3
HE:
והכלל שישבנו בכליון עיניים וכל רגע היה לנו לזמן רב, ונדידותינו זאת היה קשה לנו יותר מכל נדידותינו עד עכשיו שהיינו כבר עייפים ויגעים, והיינו מצפים כבר שנזכה לישב כבר על האוטו, ובין כך עבר גוי עם שק אשכוליות וקנינו איזה סך אשכוליות גדולים והנחנו בשק של האוכל ונעשה המשא יותר כבדה.

EN:
In sum, we sat there with consuming expectation, and every moment seemed to us a long time. This wandering was more difficult for us than all the wandering we had endured until then, for we were already tired and weary. We waited in hope that we would finally merit sitting aboard the bus. Meanwhile a non-Jew passed carrying a sack of grapefruits. We purchased a quantity of large grapefruits and placed them in the sack of food, making the burden still heavier.

Segment 4
HE:
ובין כך התחילו האנשים לעמוד בתור ובסדר בשורה על פי צו של אגד, והיה לנו עבודה קשה מאד ממש עבודת פרך להעמיד את עצמנו בתור עם מעט חפצים, ושאר החפצים היו מונחים מרחוק ועינינו צריך להביט לשם שלא יגנבו וכו׳, ועם הילדים היינו עומדים בתור על השמש הבוער כאש ואני על ידי בני הקטן נפתלי אשר הוא פחות משנה וחלש כנ״ל ובידי האחת שק חפצים וכו׳.

EN:
Meanwhile, at Egged’s direction, the people began to stand in an orderly line. It was exceedingly difficult work—truly backbreaking labor—to place ourselves in the queue with some of our belongings, while the rest lay at a distance and our eyes had to watch them lest they be stolen, and so forth. We stood in the queue with the children under the sun, which burned like fire. I stood there with my little son Naftali, who was less than a year old and weak, as stated above, and with a sack of belongings in one hand, and so forth.

Segment 5
HE:
ומלבד העמידה בשמש ובחום היה גם דחיפות ומריבות ומחלוקת בין העומדים ודוחקים את עצמם מאד, וכך עמדנו בערך שתי שעות רצופים (אשר אין לשער הכח ברזל הנצרך לזה), ואני יראתי מאד מהתינוק שלא יסתכן חס וחלילה מזה.

EN:
Besides standing in the sun and heat, there was also pushing, quarreling, and strife among those standing there, and they pressed themselves together greatly. Thus we stood for approximately two consecutive hours (an iron strength beyond description was required for this). I was exceedingly afraid that the infant might be endangered by this, Heaven forbid.

Segment 6
HE:
וגם הרבה אנשים ונשים צעקו אלי שלא אהיה עומד עם התינוק והוכרחתי לצאת חוץ וכבר ראיתי שהילד אינו כמקודם ומה לעשות (ובוודאי הוא מסירת נפש כל הנסיעה הלזו).

EN:
Many men and women also shouted at me that I must not stand there with the infant. I was compelled to leave the line, and I already saw that the child was no longer as he had been. What was I to do? (This entire journey was certainly an act of self-sacrifice.)

Segment 7
HE:
והדוחק בין האנשים היה גדול והצעקות והקובלנא על אגד היה עד לב השמים, והרבה אנשים קללו אותם בקללות נמרצות שהיתכן כזאת שמרויחים כל כך הרבה כסף ומניחים את העולם לדחוק ולעמוד בשורה כמה שעות רצופים ממש במסירת נפש על עוצם תוקף חום השמש כזה ולא יכולים ליתן כמה אוטומובילים שיהיה די בשביל האנשים, ולא די זאת אלא שעומדים כמה שעות ולא נתנו אוטו אחת, וממש היה סכנה שלא יהיה נרמסים איזה אנשים מלבד סכנת השמש וכו׳.

EN:
The crowding among the people was severe, and the cries and complaints against Egged rose to the very heavens. Many people cursed them with vehement curses: how was it possible that they earned so much money, yet allowed the public to crowd and stand in line for several consecutive hours—literally with self-sacrifice—in the extreme force of such scorching sunlight, and could not provide enough buses for the people? Not only that: the people had stood for hours and Egged had not supplied even a single bus. There was a real danger that some people might be trampled, apart from the danger of the sun, and so forth.

Segment 8
HE:
ואחר כך אחר שבירת כל הגוף והעצמות בעמידת השעות הנ״ל על מקום מבלי לזוז כל שהוא שלא יתפוס חברו המקום, ומדחיקה ויגיעה ממש עד כלות הנפש וכליון עיניים בכל רגע ורגע שכעת יבוא האוטו וכו׳, סוף כל סוף אחר שתי שעות העמידה הנ״ל בכליון עינים בא האוטו מצפת והוריד האנשים מצפת ובוודאי נעשה הדחיקה יותר ויותר ממש איש על איש.

EN:
After my entire body and bones had been shattered by standing for those hours in one place, without moving in the slightest lest another person seize my place, and after the crowding and exertion almost to the point of expiration, while every moment I waited with consuming expectation that the bus would now arrive, and so forth—at long last, after those two hours of standing and waiting, the bus from Tzfas arrived and discharged its passengers. Naturally the crowding became still greater, literally person upon person.

Segment 9
HE:
והאוטו לא נגש ישר להתור (האנשים העומדים בשורה) רק לצד אחר ואז נדחקו ועלו דווקא האנשים האחרונים שלא עמדו בתור, ונעשה דחיקה מכל האנשים העומדים בתור ונדחקו זה על זה כבר בלא סדר כולם ביחד שאין לשער ואני והילד על זרועי גם כן, ונסים שלא דחקו מעי ולא רמסו אותי עם הילד, ונשארתי מחוץ לאוטו בתוך דחיקת שאר האנשים.

EN:
The bus did not pull up directly alongside the queue (the people standing in line), but rather to another side. Consequently, it was specifically the last people—those who had not stood in the queue—who pressed forward and boarded. All the people who had been standing in line surged forward; order was lost, and everyone crushed against everyone else in a manner beyond description. I too was there with the child in my arms. It was miraculous that they did not crush my abdomen or trample me together with the child. I remained outside the bus amid the crush of the other people.

Segment 10
HE:
והיה צעקות על אגד שעושים כך ואני גם כן צעקתי מאד על האיש מאגד המסדר האוטומובילים איך שהתינוק הרך הזה כבר חלש ומסוכן רחמנא ליצלן ואין לדבר סוף כי מה יהיה מזה ואינני יכול לדחוק בין האנשים כי בנפשי הוא וכו׳.

EN:
There were cries against Egged for conducting matters in this manner. I too cried out vehemently to the Egged official who was directing the buses: this tender infant was already weak and dangerously ill—may the Merciful One save us—and there was no end to the matter; what would become of him? I could not force myself into the crowd, for this concerned my very life, and so forth.

Segment 11
HE:
ואשה ספרדית בכתה ואמרה וצעקה שהתינוק כבר ימות חס וחלילה כאשר מת ילד שלה רחמנא ליצלן, ומובן ממילא צערי ויסורי שאין לשער, ובין כך העמידו עוד אוטו והתחילו לעלות עליו האנשים העומדים בתור גם כן בדחיקה נוראה, וזה האיש המסדר האוטו הנ״ל אחז בידי והעלני עם הילד על האוטו בעל כרחם שלא בטובת האנשים העומדים בתור, וברוך השם שכבר ראיתי את עצמי עם התינוק על האוטו ויכולים כבר לפוש על הצל, ובין כך דחקה את עצמה זוגתי עם שאר הילדים ועלו על האוטו והיה לנו שמחה גדולה על שכולנו כבר עלינו על האוטו.

EN:
A Sephardi woman wept and said, crying aloud, that the infant would die, Heaven forbid, just as her own child had died—may the Merciful One save us. It is self-evident that my distress and suffering were beyond measure. Meanwhile they brought another bus, and the people standing in the queue began to board it, likewise amid terrible crowding. The aforementioned official directing the buses took hold of my hand and brought me and the child onto the bus against the will and displeasure of the people standing in the queue. Blessed be Hashem, I now saw myself aboard the bus with the infant, able at last to rest in the shade. Meanwhile my wife pressed her way aboard with the other children, and we experienced great joy that all of us had now boarded the bus.

Segment 12
HE:
אבל היינו דואגים עוד על החפצים של ישארו חס וחלילה, ואז אחר שנתמלא כבר האוטו והתור עמד רחוק ממנו ירד בני מעל האוטו ולאט לאט הביא החפצים אצל האוטו והושיט להעומד על הגג לקשרם שם ואחר כך עלה על האוטו לישב עמנו.

EN:
We were still anxious, however, lest the belongings be left behind, Heaven forbid. Once the bus was already full and the queue stood some distance away from it, my son alighted from the bus and, little by little, brought the belongings over to it. He passed them up to the man standing on the roof so that he could tie them there, and afterward boarded the bus to sit with us.

Segment 13
HE:
ובתוך שאנו יושבים על האוטו ראינו איך שהגיעו האנשים שנסעו עם הרכבת ונעשה דחיקה ותור יותר גדול וכו׳, וגם ראיתי אנשי שלומינו שרצים להתור (שבאו מהרכבת), וכן ישבנו מעט על האוטו עד שהתחיל לנסוע.

EN:
While we were sitting on the bus, we saw the people who had traveled by train arrive, and the crowding and the queue became still greater, and so forth. I also saw members of our fellowship who had arrived by train running toward the line. We remained seated on the bus for a short while, until it began to move.
