EN: When the prayer service had concluded, they set the table as on the preceding night. I recited Kiddush and washed my hands in order to eat. I went outside to my wife to bring the Shabbos foods, and learned from her that the small child was suffering from a stomach ailment. It was astonishing: on the preceding night he had been in perfect health, rejoicing and playing until midnight, whereas by morning he had already fallen ill; now he was gravely ill—may the Merciful One save us—with an illness of the stomach. This caused me very great anguish and suffering. Nevertheless, for the honor of Shabbos I strengthened myself greatly, so as not to draw excessive anguish and suffering upon myself. I likewise told my wife, may she live, to strengthen herself and that we should believe that, in the merit of holy Shabbos and of this holy tzadik, this divine Tanna, nothing evil would occur, Heaven forbid; with the help of Hashem, blessed be He, there would only be good. EN: In truth, however, my heart was so broken and crushed that, because of the intensity of my brokenheartedness and dejection of spirit, I could not even weep. I understood in retrospect why I had wept so greatly the preceding night and why my heart had pounded during the Haftarah at the words ‘Heal me,’ and so forth: I now needed that prayer. In general, I did not know what to do, and I did not wish to create an uproar over the matter amid so many people and in such a wilderness, and so forth. EN: My wife likewise did not wish to create an uproar. We therefore agreed together not to tell anyone whatsoever about it, but only to plead quietly for mercy from Hashem, blessed be He, and, beside the holy tziyun, to arouse mercy so that the holy tzadik would intercede favorably on our behalf, and so forth. We likewise prayed that this should not bring about a desecration of Hashem’s Name, Heaven forbid, through everyone speaking about us for having brought a weak child with us, and so forth. EN: In sum, I pleaded in my thoughts and heart, and with my mouth as well I spoke extensively before the holy tziyun, asking that the tzadik arouse his great merit for the honor of His great Name, so that it should not be desecrated, Heaven forbid. I pleaded that the words ‘O Hashem, I am oppressed; be my guarantor’ be fulfilled—that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, should be our guarantor, just as he had been guarantor for Rabbi Yitzchak, who had already drawn near to death, with the Angel of Death standing beside him. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, undertook responsibility for him as guarantor, and he remained alive until the day of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s passing, may his merit shield us, Amen. (He lies buried there in the courtyard.) I likewise advanced many arguments and petitions in my heart; with my mouth, however, I could not do so, for I was already so confused that it cannot be described. Nevertheless, I strengthened myself to eat the Shabbos meal with joy. EN: Thus a great multitude of us sat down to eat together, and we ate joyfully as on the preceding night. We sang the zemer ‘Asader Liseudasa’ and ate the fish. Afterward they further sang ‘Baruch Hashem Yom Yom’ and ‘Baruch Kel Elyon,’ and so forth; we ate the pashtida, and so forth, and the other Shabbos foods. We sang and danced extensively as on the preceding night. We likewise lingered at the table for several hours, and during the meal they studied from the books of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Afterward we recited Birkas HaMazon over a cup of wine with a minyan. Following Birkas HaMazon, many lay down to rest and sleep for a short while, for ‘sleep on Shabbos is a delight’; many rejoiced and danced, while many recited Tehillim and engaged in the service of Hashem, and so forth. EN: I, however, could neither rest nor be still. I repeatedly went out to see how the child was faring, but he did not improve. Every discharge from his bowels was unhealthy, until he had soiled all the garments she had brought with her and the cloths as well. The soiled material had to be covered so that words of sanctity could be recited, for throughout that entire time some of the people were praying and others were reciting Tehillim beside the tziyun of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, and so forth. This caused her great suffering. EN: Nevertheless, we told no one whatsoever about it. We merely did our part by pleading for mercy beside the holy tziyun. I recited Tehillim there according to my regular order, but could not remain long enough to complete all of Tehillim. I went outside and found the child lying in actual mortal danger, purging and vomiting, and lying as though in his death throes, Heaven forbid. The other children, may they live—one was weeping and another running outside, and so forth—and my wife was absent. I sat beside the child, and my heart was bitterer than death. EN: Meanwhile my wife returned. I asked why she had left the dangerously ill child and gone out. She told me that she had been beside the tziyun of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, and had wept out her heart, pleading for pity and mercy upon her: that no fire should remain burning within her, Heaven forbid, on account of having journeyed to him, of blessed memory; that just as she had brought a living child, so should she return home with a living child; that the world should not say that we had killed a child with our own hands and speak against the journey to him; and that Hashem, blessed be He, should act for the sake of His blessed Name, so that it be sanctified, and so forth. There she wept out her heart thoroughly and begged for mercy, supplications, compassion, and grace, for the sake of His blessed honor, so that His blessed Name should not be desecrated, Heaven forbid—for what would the world say? EN: She could not prolong her prayer greatly, for her heart was filled to overflowing. Nor could she linger, because she had to see what was happening with the child. In her eyes the child already appeared to be in his death throes, as though dead. She considered summoning Menachem Klein (a member of the Chevra Kadisha), who was there and understood such matters, so that he might feel the child’s pulse and determine whether he was alive and whether he was still close to life. Yet she restrained herself with all her strength and relied upon the power of the holy tzadik. She did not wish to admit any evil thought concerning the child into her mind, Heaven forbid, nor did she wish to create an uproar over it there amid all the people. EN: I likewise did not wish, Heaven forbid, to admit any evil thought into my mind, nor did I wish to create an uproar among the people so that everyone would know about it. Rather, discreetly and between ourselves, we lifted our eyes to heaven at every moment and wept. Our hearts were so bitter and hard that we could not even utter a sound. EN: Only in thought did we plead, and in our hearts we cried intensely to Hashem, blessed be He, that He have pity, mercy, and compassion—for the sake of His great Name, for His blessed honor, and for the honor of the holy and awesome tzadik—so that it should not be desecrated, Heaven forbid; and for the honor of the holy Shabbos and the day of the holy hillula, so that the rejoicing should not be disturbed and thrown into confusion, Heaven forbid; and that the child should not die before our eyes, Heaven forbid, thereby utterly confounding our rejoicing, Heaven forbid. Thus, quietly and without speech, we cried from our hearts to Hashem, blessed be He, that He have pity, mercy, and compassion.
