EN: In sum, I entrusted the child to her and entered beside the holy tziyun to carry out my service. Meanwhile they prayed the Minchah prayer of holy Shabbos; I was called to the Torah, and we completed the Minchah prayer. Throughout that time I was entreating and pleading in my thoughts before Hashem, blessed be He, and laying my plea before the tzadik: that he should perform miracles for us, save us from our troubles, and have pity and mercy upon us. The words that issued from my mouth were: ‘Heal me, O Hashem, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved’; likewise the words, ‘O Hashem, I am oppressed; be my guarantor!’—that He should wrest and seize the soul from the Angel of Death against his will; ‘be my guarantor’—that He should provide me with a guarantor! Just as Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, peace be upon him, had been guarantor for his disciple Rabbi Yitzchak, whom the Angel of Death pursued, and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai became his guarantor and saved him from death, so should Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, peace be upon him, be guarantor for this child and save him from the straits of this illness. I advanced further arguments and petitions of this kind: that this should not set our hearts aflame, Heaven forbid, against his hillula; for if, Heaven forbid, evil should result from this journey, our hearts would forever be embittered at the name ‘Meron’ and the day ‘Lag BaOmer’ whenever we remembered them. I advanced still other arguments of this kind. EN: After Minchah, my friend Yaakov Zev, several other members of our fellowship, other people, and I sat down to eat the third meal beside the holy tziyun. Rabbi Avraham ate in the Moshav Zekeinim, while the other members of our fellowship ate in their respective places. Only we, who always sat beside the holy tziyun, ate there as usual. We sang the zemer ‘Bnei Heichala,’ and so forth, together with other zemiros; they also studied a little Torah from Likutay Moharan, and so forth. No one knew the anguish and bitterness of my heart except Hashem, blessed be He, Himself and the true tzadik. EN: I sat within the congregation in my customary place beside the holy tziyun, my eyes watching and gazing toward the holy tziyun and pleading in supplication for compassion, mercy, and grace. Meanwhile, the members of our fellowship with whom we had sat together at the third meal wished to recite Birkas HaMazon and pray Maariv, as did the other members of our fellowship and the other people. But I was aroused in my heart: why should this Shabbos differ from our usual practice, when beside the holy tziyun we engage in much dancing and many melodies with great joy? Now they had not yet performed even one dance and already wished to conclude quickly, as stated above. EN: I roused my friend Yaakov Zev, and we went out to dance; we sang melodies and danced. As a result, all the members of our fellowship and everyone who had eaten with us came out to dance. They formed an exceedingly great dance that continued for a long time—several hours. Meanwhile, other members of our fellowship who had already prayed Maariv entered and joined the dance, as did other people and Sephardim. There was great rejoicing in dancing and melodies. EN: Then, amid the dance, my heart was bitter within me and cried out from its depths: ‘Please, Hashem, have pity; please, have mercy; heal me,’ and so forth; ‘O Hashem, I am oppressed,’ and so forth, as stated above. Amid this great dance I wept out my entire heart with copious tears before Hashem, pleading that He have pity upon me through the power and merit of holy Shabbos at Minchah, which is raava deraavin [the Favor of Favors], the great time of Divine favor; through the power and merit of Lag BaOmer, the hillula, which likewise is a great time of Divine favor; and through the power and merit of the tzadik, who is Shabbos dekulay yoma [the Shabbos of all days], Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen, and so forth. EN: In sum, I multiplied appeals for mercy and supplications beyond measure, silently, without anyone sensing it. I only roused my friend Yaakov Zev that he too should plead for mercy. Rabbi Nosson, a grandson of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, then entered and poured out his speech and his heart before the holy tziyun. I asked him to plead for mercy for the child, and so forth, and I likewise asked several other people. I myself wept greatly with copious tears amid the dance and the darkness, without anyone sensing it. EN: I also vowed that if Hashem, blessed be He, would help me and the child’s condition improved, I would spend the entire night in joy and dancing and would arouse still other people to joy and dancing, and so forth. Afterward, following that great dance, we sang still other zemiros. We then washed our hands for mayim acharonim and recited Birkas HaMazon with a zimun. They honored me to lead, and I led over a cup of wine with a minyan. Afterward we prayed Maariv there with a minyan and a very large congregation, with great concentration, as we always pray on the night of Lag BaOmer—with exceedingly great spiritual awakening and fitting concentration, our hearts filled with thoughts of repentance and yearnings for Hashem, blessed be He. Thus we prayed word by word, with great spiritual awakening and genuine vitality. EN: In particular, we counted the Omer with an awakening beyond measure, in accordance with our constant practice on the night of Lag BaOmer: to count the Omer there beside the holy tziyun with an awakening that cannot be measured at all. It is impossible to relate or describe to one who has not seen it with his own eyes the magnitude of the awakening, yearnings, and longing for Hashem, blessed be He, and the genuine thoughts of repentance that each person then experiences, all beyond measure and estimation. By then a large Lux lamp was shining; the entire holy tziyun was already filled with tallow candles and olive-oil lamps beyond measure, and it was so filled with people that one could not approach, for there was no room. EN: The awakening was great, abundant, and mighty—especially for one who gazed upon the holy tziyun; it was altogether beyond measure. It was as though someone were speaking—‘Un reyst di poles, tut teshuvah,’ and so forth [‘And tugging at the coattails: Repent!’]—and were pulling you by the corners of your garment, saying, ‘Return in repentance!’ Especially when they said, ‘Today is thirty-three days,’ the magnitude of the awakening and the yearnings of the heart were beyond measure. The heart was filled with love, affection, and weeping, and the sound of everyone together was heard like a peal of thunder. This cannot be described to one who has not seen it with his own eyes, and so forth. EN: Thus we counted the Omer with great and mighty spiritual awakening. The recitation of ‘Lishaim Yichud’ before the Counting continued for a long time, with hearts filled with shame and thoughts of repentance. Afterward came the chazzan’s recitation of the blessing and the Counting of the Omer, followed by the entire congregation’s recitation of the blessing together—especially the count, ‘Today is thirty-three days’—with a thunderous voice and great tumult, as stated above. EN: Afterward we recited, ‘May the Merciful One restore to us the service of the Temple,’ with hearts filled with awakening and yearning; then ‘Lamnatzeiach Binginos,’ followed by ‘Ana Bekoach.’ In particular, we recited, ‘Master of the Universe, You commanded us to count the Counting of the Omer,’ and so forth, ‘in order to purify us from our kelipos,’ and so forth. The magnitude and depth of the petition, the awakening from the depths of the heart, the repentance, and the shame, and so forth, were beyond measure or estimation—especially during the words, ‘Whatever I have blemished in the Sefirah,’ and so forth. It took a long time until they completed the prayer. Afterward they sang the psalm ‘Lamnatzeiach Binginos’ to the familiar melody and danced to it. EN: Afterward we danced to the melody of ‘Bar Yochai’ with an awakening beyond measure. The entire congregation likewise danced together in a great dance to the songs ‘Bar Yochai’ and ‘Amar Rabbi Akiva: Ashreichem,’ and so forth; the refrain ‘Vaamartem Koh Lechai’; ‘Ashreinu, Mah Tov Chelkeinu BeHillula DeBar Yochai,’ and so forth; and ‘Pitchu Li Shaarei Tzedek,’ and so forth. This continued for a long time. Afterward we made Havdalah amid the assembled congregation, sang ‘HaMavdil,’ and recited ‘Veyiten Lecha,’ and so forth, as on every Motzaei Shabbos.
