Chapter 6 פרק ו Source: https://ajew.org/reader/yimay-shmuel/1/6 Segment 1 HE: והנה הגיע ערב ראש חודש ועשו התעוררות איזה אנ״ש לנסוע לקבר רחל, ואחד מהם הוא המתעסק בזה לעורר ולקבץ האנשים לזה, וקיבץ עשרה אנשים אבל כל אחד צריך לשלם עשרה גרוש מפני שצריכים לשלם להשמש וגם להאוטומובילים, ורצה חברי יעקב זאב כ גם בנו יסע אבל לבסוף לא נסע (מפני פחד.), EN: Then came Erev Rosh Chodesh, and several members of our fellowship aroused themselves to travel to Rachel’s Tomb. One of them was the organizer, who occupied himself with arousing and gathering the people for this. He assembled ten men, but each had to pay ten grushim because the shamash and the automobiles had to be paid. My friend Yaakov Zev wanted his son to travel as well, but in the end he did not go (because of fear). EN: The organizer asked me to join, and I had an exceedingly great desire to do so. Rosh Chodesh Kislev possesses the aspect of Yom Kippur, as cited in Rashi Yashan, etc.; moreover, the days of Chanukah were approaching, and they constitute the culmination of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as is known. I told him, however, “I have no money” (for even a perutah was precious to me, since with it I could buy oranges for the children). He replied that he would pay for me, because he owed me for books he had taken from me long before, and I agreed to this. EN: And so we did. We assembled together in Hurvas Rabbi Yehudah HaChasid, walked to the Nesher automobile, and set out. Other members of our fellowship, however, had preceded us, traveling in Arab automobiles that went to Bethlehem for two grushim. They stood outside and waited for us to arrive and open the door. The shamash did not wish to admit them, asking why they should not share the expenses as we did; but we agreed that he should admit them, and he did. We entered and experienced great spiritual arousal. We recited the Tikkun Haklali, Chanukah prayers, and Psalms, with shofar blasts, weeping, and prayers for all of Klal Yisrael. We lingered there for more than an hour and returned. EN: At that time several younger members of our fellowship also initiated journeys to Meron. It is known that for several years no one had traveled to Meron except on Lag BaOmer, and then only for three hours: everyone together, accompanied by the government and heavy guard, in armored automobiles, etc., etc. Recently, however, as conditions had quieted, they sent a letter to the Sephardic shamash in Safed: “If we come to Safed, will you travel with us to Meron?” He replied, “Yes!” They went there, paid him, and he traveled with them. They remained there a night and a day. When they returned and told us, it appeared to us an act of immense self-sacrifice. Nevertheless, the desire for this burned within me. I could not bring it from potential into actuality, for I had no access whatsoever to money; one also needed companionship for it, etc. But the measure of my desire, my longing, and my yearning for it cannot be described. EN: During those days the little son of one of our fellowship, R. Sh. Sh., became ill. His mother went with the child to Dr. Wallach, but the doctor would not release the child to her, saying that he had a contagious disease; he placed him in quarantine, etc. We prayed greatly to Hashem to send him a complete recovery, and at Chatzos at night we would also mention him. Several weeks passed during which we multiplied prayer for him. In the end Hashem helped and granted him a complete recovery, and his father made Kiddush in the beis midrash on the sacred Shabbos. EN: Then came a sacred Shabbos on which a groom from among our fellowship (who lived with us in the city) was to be called to the Torah on the Shabbos preceding his wedding. Another groom from among our fellowship was likewise to be called to the Torah in Meah Shearim. I therefore longed to go to Meah Shearim: first, because I had long yearned to spend a sacred Shabbos together with the members of our fellowship in Meah Shearim, where there was a large gathering of our fellowship here in Jerusalem. It had been a very long time since I had been together with them, all the more so on the sacred Shabbos. Second, because two grooms from among our fellowship were being called to the Torah, so there would presumably be great spiritual arousal and joy. It was worthwhile to exert myself for this and walk outside the city, especially since the wedding families were members of our fellowship and my friends. EN: I therefore prayed vasikin on the sacred Shabbos morning in the synagogue at Batei Machaseh. I arranged with the avreich Nesanel [a young married Torah scholar], one of our fellowship, that we would go together and that he would come to my house to call for me. When the entire service ended, I went home, recited Kiddush, and we ate pashtida. The avreich came and waited until we finished; we also honored him with food. EN: Afterward all of us set out. I walked with the avreich and spoke with him about matters concerning Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Behind us walked my wife, may she live, carrying the little child in her arms. (She had now found a reason to go as well to her father and sister to see how they were, something she longed to do every Shabbos.) We sent our other two sons, may they live, with my elder son, may his lamp shine, to pray in our beis midrash inside the city. We took the entire old route that we had not used for several years because of fear—namely, Musrara Street. I walked in great fear, but they strengthened me, telling me not to be afraid, for they always went by this route. EN: When we came near our beis midrash, my wife turned toward her father’s home, while we entered our beis midrash. We found them already in the middle of the Torah reading, but they had not yet called the groom (for, as is known, the groom is called for Maftir). I was greatly amazed at the gathering of our fellowship here in Jerusalem (although the second groom was called in another beis midrash, and people had therefore gone to pray with him too). I sat there in the beis midrash. They called the groom for Maftir, and the women threw sweets upon him, as is customary. EN: Thus I waited until Mussaf. Afterward I went to my father-in-law’s home so that I could return, for I greatly yearned to return to the city and occupy myself with my fixed lessons. Indeed, whenever I go even a little way outside the city, my nature is immediately to yearn and long to return to the city, like a magnet that draws iron. Although the mechutan [a member of the wedding family] urged me strongly to go with him and make Kiddush, I did not consent. I nearly regretted having exerted myself and gone outside the city instead of praying Mussaf at the Western Wall, as I always did. I therefore went straight to my father-in-law’s house, but found the door locked. I went to my brother-in-law’s home, found my wife there, and she went with me once more to my father-in-law’s house. The door was still locked because he was in the synagogue; they had both a chazzan and a groom there, and the service therefore lasted a long time. EN: We stood outside awaiting him. I suffered from the thought that I was wasting the sacred Shabbos in this way, and regretted not having gone with the members of our fellowship to make Kiddush at the groom’s home. I therefore mustered courage within myself to walk back to the city alone, although I was still filled with fear of walking alone. Fear of the riots weighed upon me continually. Almost never during that entire period did I walk alone from my home to the Western Wall, or back from the Western Wall to my home; I went only with other people. This greatly hindered and disrupted my service of Hashem, for out of fear I often refrained from going there—until the Days of Awe. EN: During the Days of Awe I mustered the courage within myself to begin walking alone. From then until today I have walked by myself (only at night do I not walk alone to the Western Wall). Likewise, throughout that time I feared walking alone to Shimon HaTzaddik until recently; even today, when I go alone to Shimon HaTzaddik, I still go in fear. EN: Until then I likewise feared walking on foot outside the city even in the company of other people. Only recently did I begin walking back to the city together with others. (Now, however, I always walk alone outside the city without fear.) EN: I walked home filled with fear until I reached the house. By then my son, may his lamp shine, had already returned from the beis midrash. On my solitary return I did not take the old Musrara Street route we had used earlier, but went by way of Nachalas Shivah. To this day I still do not take that former route because of fear. EN: Not long afterward my wife, may she live, also came home. We ate the sacred Shabbos meal. Afterward I went to the Western Wall, recited Psalms there, and prayed Minchah there.
