EN: Rabbi Tzvi the shamash removed his shoes, climbed upon the tomb-marker, and placed objects, garments, and so forth, atop the stone basin that projected from within the tomb-marker (this is what is called the hadlakah). He poured in a great quantity of oil. They sold the privilege of kindling the hadlakah for money. The purchaser likewise ascended without shoes, as stated above, and kindled the hadlakah. They recited Mi Shebeirach blessings for the people abroad and the people of Eretz Yisrael, as well as individual Mi Shebeirach blessings for the sick and others in need, and so forth. EN: We then made our petitions, each person presenting his own requests and needs; I in particular offered abundant prayer for the aforementioned child. We took additional olive oil, and each person removed his shoes, climbed up as stated above, poured it into the fire, and assisted with the hadlakah, and so forth. They began to play the melodies ‘Amar Rabbi Akiva,’ and so forth, and ‘Bar Yochai,’ and so forth. We recited chapters of Tehillim beside the holy tziyun. They began walking back, while I recited the Tikun Haklali and other petitions. We returned to the holy courtyard of the divine Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen. There the rejoicing was in all its fullness and completeness: the musicians were singing and playing, and all manner of dancing and chinga [festive celebration] filled the place. EN: Above, beside the hadlakah, they were likewise playing music and dancing, and so forth. I entered the holy bais midrash beside the holy tziyun. There a great spiritual awakening prevailed, as men and women broke their hearts in prayers and supplications. Especially within, in the chamber, great was the awakening of the people standing beside the holy tziyun, through their recitation of the holy Idra and of the Lag BaOmer prayers of Moharnat, of blessed memory, which were affixed to the walls. The lamps were burning, and the people stood pouring out their hearts like water. The awakening was immeasurable and beyond estimation, as stated above. EN: There was nothing comparable to this at any time—not on Yom Kippur at Kol Nidrei or Neilah, and so forth, and certainly not at any other time whatsoever. When one gazes upon the holy tziyun, one is literally so greatly awakened to repentance and so ashamed of oneself. As Rabbainu, of blessed memory, brings: when one beholds the face of the tzadik, one sees oneself as in a mirror—how one’s own countenance is immersed in darkness, and so forth—and becomes exceedingly ashamed, and so forth. Precisely this was fulfilled beside the tziyun of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen—especially on the night of Lag BaOmer, when the awesome awakening experienced while gazing upon the holy tziyun cannot be measured or estimated by any comparison whatsoever, and so forth. EN: I spent some time there beside the holy tziyun in hitbodedus and personal speech, but immediately went out to fulfill my word—to rejoice and dance, as stated above—particularly because the principal matter then is joy and dancing, as at a hillula and chinga, in which the principal matter is joy. EN: When I went out, behold, the aforementioned man from Tiberias was standing in the courtyard among the musicians. Many other people were there, including many members of our fellowship, and they were dancing all manner of dances. I too joined the dancing and danced with all my strength and heart, especially together with the aforementioned man. The musicians played a beautiful melody, and we danced several kinds of dances—sometimes one person at a time and sometimes all together. EN: At times all of us would sit together on the ground in a circle, while one person—or the aforementioned man—danced alone with his staff, performing various ingenious feats (called kontsen [tricks]). The musicians would pause; the aforementioned man would pay them their fee, and they would play further. We engaged in every kind of dancing and rejoicing, our hearts burning with love for the holy tzadik, and we declared aloud, ‘In honor of the divine Tanna Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, may his merit shield us, Amen,’ and so forth. Each time they likewise collected a little money from the dancers and from those standing and looking on, and paid the musicians to play further. EN: In sum, we spent most of the night in melodies and dances, and so forth, our hearts filled with joy and awakening born of love for the holy and awesome tzadik, may his merit shield us, Amen, with every manner of melody, song, and dance, and so forth. Afterward I reentered beside the holy tziyun. The awakening there overflowed all bounds, as stated above. From midnight onward, a vast multitude already stood there, reciting Tehillim together as a congregation with very great awakening, and so forth. I too recited some with them, and also spent time beside the holy tziyun reciting a little of the Idra, prayers, and so forth, and Tikun Leah. EN: I also ate a little something in honor of the Melaveh Malkah meal. Thus I remained there amid the multitude until close to daybreak. I went outside with several other members of our fellowship, and we walked to the mikveh at the Magido (while in the courtyard the musicians were still playing and the people were still dancing). The way was somewhat long; by the time we reached it, immersed, and returned, the day had already dawned. EN: We hurried so as to be in time for the vasikin prayer and obtain a place amid the press of the great congregation. When we returned to the courtyard, many men and women were standing by the water to wash their hands, and so forth. The musicians had already begun anew to play and sing in honor of the young ‘grooms’ at the ‘bar mitzvah’ of their peyos [their first-haircut ceremonies]. We immediately entered the bais midrash, and I urged my wife, may she live, to prepare everything for the chalakah—the making of the peyos of my son, may his light shine—immediately after the prayer.
